The development of a personal growth programme to address the emotional needs of early childhood development practitioners in previously disadvantaged communities

Bokaba, Jacqueline Nomsa 29 October 2012 (has links)
This research was based on the development of a Personal Growth Programme to address the emotional needs of ECD practitioners dealing with vulnerable children in previously disadvantaged communities, mostly in Gauteng. Early childhood development practitioners placed emphasis on their emotional needs and the kind of interventions necessary to assist them in dealing effectively with the emotional needs of children in their care. A Personal Growth Programme was designed with the aim of stimulating and sustaining reflexive practices and emotional growth through self-exploration, role-play and sharing of experiences. Relying on semi-structured interviews, the practitioners’ evaluations of the Personal Growth Programme were presented. All agreed that the programme had benefited them as individuals and as practitioners. They reported that the most important skills they had learnt were self-knowledge and empathy with the children in their care, both of which improved their practice. Some cited how these skills had benefited not only their practice but their personal relationships with family. Some of the skills were thus cited as life-changing. Regarding the sustaining of support groups, only three groups managed to meet at least once after the personal growth programme, with the aim of discussing their work or other issues related to it. The programme therefore made a difference for individuals but its sustainability revealed less success, suggesting that sustainability needed more attention. Role pedagoga v problematice CAN / The role of the teacher in the issue of CAN

VOLKOVÁ, Andrea January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to monitor the school community's awareness about the issue Syndrome CAN and the ability and willingness of teachers to solve such situations. The theoretical part was focused on the characteristics of the CAN syndrome, its forms, manifestations and causes. This part was also given to the legislation and prevention. The research was attended by a total of 148 teachers of kindergartens and elementary schools situated in South Bohemia and Highland. Four hypotheses were defined for the research purposes, three of them: 1/"the educational community admits that the availability of information about the syndrome CAN should be improved",2/"if the teachers knew about incidents of violence, neglect or abuse of a child they would be willing to solve this situation and not 3/"the teachers are not fully confident that they could recognize the symptoms of the syndrome CAN", were confirmed. The hypothesis that the teachers know how to deal with the situation when the violence, neglect or child abuse is revealed wasn´t confirmed. According to the research the teachers are not convinced or do not know how to deal with the situation when they are confronted with abused or neglected child. The data were statistically processed and evaluated.

Exploring the use of animal-assisted therapy in educational psychology

Scholtz, Sune 10 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of Animal-Assisted Therapy in Educational Psychology. An empirical study of limited extent was undertaken, which was qualitative by nature and conducted from an interpretivist paradigm. I made use of a therapeutic case, which served as an in-depth case study. Visual data, creative expression, interviews, narrative expression and field notes were employed as data-gathering methods. Data were analysed by means of document analysis. A young boy of 14 years, with whom I have previously worked as a therapist, was the participant in the study. The findings of the study were, firstly that the use of AAT could enable the attainment of goals in therapy. Implementing AAT as a therapeutic tool provided motivation for participation in therapy from the participant. Secondly the use of an animal (dog) in the therapeutic process promoted the formation of a personal, caring, and emotional relationship with the primary participant. Thirdly, psychological benefits in the use of AAT were revealed by this study, namely the opportunity to promote socialisation, self-esteem, communication, interaction and participation in therapy. Fourthly AAT had a value in working with a socio-economically vulnerable child, addressing several of the needs identified in order to enhance the well-being of the child. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

The schooling experiences of secondary school learners from child- headed households in Thulamahashe Circuit, Bushbuckridge District, Mpumalanga Province, RSA

Chidziva, Verna Nyaradzo 28 March 2014 (has links)
school learnersChild-headed household is a phenomenon that is growing in South Africa. As such, it is imperative to uncover the realities of children in this situation. This study explores and describes the schooling experiences of secondary school learners from child-headed households. This qualitative study included a sample of 20 grade 10 and 11 learners from four secondary schools. Data were collected through structured interviews and document analysis. The Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze the data. The findings suggest that secondary school learners from child-headed households live in poverty and encounter experiences such as absenteeism, psychological trauma, gender-based discrimination, lack of adequate food and scholastic materials, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. These experiences impact negatively on their schooling. The study recommends that learners from child-headed households should get more care and support from educators and other stakeholders. / Science and Technology Education / M.A. (Socio-Education)

Communi-crate jako soubor komunikačních nástrojů a postupů pro práci s ohroženými dětmi a rodinami ve Velké Británii a v České republice / Community-crare as a set of communication tools and methods in working with vulnerable children and families in Great Britain and in the Czech Republic

Fořtová, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
This thesis constitutes an analysis and instructions for use of the Communi-crate resources, the 'communication crate' which is a set of specific practical tools used in working with vulnerable children and families as used in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and are being introduced in practice in the Czech Republic. The tools contained in this thesis are designed for use by special educators and social workers in direct work with vulnerable families, children, young persons, or even adults. All of these tools have actually been tested and proven in practice and some have been adapted from their original language versions for use in the Czech Republic. In this thesis, the resources contained in the Communi-crate are divided into logical groups and each of them is described structured into chapters accordingly. Each tool is described in more or less detail, including tips for use. Most resources are also illustrated. The case studies described have been collected from practice in the Czech Republic and in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This thesis has been compiled from materials gathered by the author during foreign study visits and in seminars conducted by foreign experts in the Czech Republic in 2009 through 2014. This thesis uses analytical...

"Får jag sitta i ditt knä?" : En essä om omsorgsbegreppet i förskolan

Jägstrand, Malin January 2017 (has links)
This scientific thesis is written in the form of an essay in which I will inquire into the concept of care. The thesis is written in form of an essay and has a hermeneutic onset. My essay takes a starting point in three stories taken from my professional life where I had been involved as a pedagogue. In these situations the dilemma becomes visible about how the care concept can be interpreted and translated into pre-school practice. The essay’s questions are: How can the concept of care be understood in the light of the fact that the relationship between children and pedagogue is asymmetrical? What factors can affect the perception of the pedagogues of the concept of care? and How can educators' perception of the concept of care be understood in relation to current discourses in preschool and society? In my reflection I use literature and my stories to set the questions in relation to contemporary discourses current to childcare, age, sex and gender. I will inquire into the concept of care from using Nel Noddings’ ethics of care. My conclusion is that pedagogue’s perceptions of care are closely linked to contemporary and pre-school discourses. From an ethics of care point of view, I consider that pedagogue’s responsibility for relationship and care in care situations is larger than it is spoken of in pre-school context today.

Min granne barndomen, hur var det nu igen? : Om barndomsdiskurser i Min granne Totoro

Fredriksson, Joel January 2022 (has links)
In this study, the Japanese animated film My Neighbor Totoro was analyzed with regards to what childhood discourses can be found in it, and why these discourses in particular appear. To do this, discourse theory was used as the main theoretical basis, and certain aspects of hermeneutics were also used, such as combining the hermeneutic spiral with basic film analysis as a method. The childhood discourses that are discussed are the natural child, adult children and child adults, the competent child, the vulnerable child, postmodern childhood, the lonely/psychological child, and gender discourses. First, the life context of Hayao Miyazaki was examined to see what childhood discourses that might have influenced him. The natural child seems to be the most prominent discourse throughout Miyazaki’s life and his previous work, and the discourse appears in My Neighbor Totoro as well. However, so do all the other discourses. The results are that the view of childhood expressed in the film is that children develop the best in proximity to nature and the divine. Children should aspire to become competent adults, but adults should also come closer to childhood and nature. Postmodernity is dismissed as bad for children, and the natural childhood is deemed to be in need of saving. Children are also according to the film beings capable of complex thoughts and feelings relating to fears, death and family relations. These difficult thoughts are dealt with by their imagination – an imagination that is non-separable from their reality. This could indicate another childhood discourse: the imaginative child. Apart from all this, ways to use films like this one in education are also briefly discussed through film pedagogy. /
Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2022-01-14
