"Narrative dandyism" : the theology of creation in the French decadent-dandyist novel, 1845-1907Burton, Tara Isabella January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores how selected "decadent-dandyist" writers of late 19th century France at once exemplify and subvert the self's act of shaping and imprinting its own selfhood upon the world: a model in which an autonomous, discrete artist-self freely creates, and in which both reader/audience and artistic "subjects" are treated as raw canvas and denied agency of their own. Storytellers like Barbey D'Aurevilly, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, J.K. Huysmans, and Remy de Gourmont create not only hyper-artificial, cloistered, "auto-telic" (to use Charles Taylor's term) textual worlds (e.g. Huysmans' theïbade raffinée) but also hyper-artificial selves: presenting themselves and their often autobiographical protagonists as dandy-artists for whom artistic creation is an extension of self-creation. Central to this thesis is the 19th century figure of the dandy - he who, to quote D'Aurevilly, "[causes] surprise in others, and [has] the proud satisfaction of never showing any oneself." Appropriating the divine power of self-fashioning, the dandy transforms the chaos of existence into a clear narrative over which he alone exerts control, denying that he himself is subject to the control of the world. In my thesis, I first explore the cultural and economic roots of this understanding of the autonomous dandyist-artist in the light of wider tensions in 19th century Paris. I then explore selected "decadent-dandyist" texts through close reading, focusing on the theological implications of our authors' treatment of narrative, character, setting, and language: showing how our writers cast doubt on both the possibility and morality "autonomous" creation on theological grounds. Finally, I ask how constructive theologians might learn from our authors' condemnation of "dandyist" storytelling to create a new Christian aesthetics for the novel: proposing elements of an alternate, "kenotic" novel, in which self-projection gives way to "self-giving", a model based not on power and ego but rather on love.

Jürgen Moltmann as a biblical theologian : political hermeneutic of scripture as foundational for ecological theologyLee, Hyo-Dong January 1995 (has links)
This dissertation explores the way Jurgen Moltmann's biblical hermeneutic informs his salvation-historical approach to ecological theology. Coming from the post-Barthian camp of German Protestant theology, Moltmann has inherited Karl Barth's theological critique of the technological-scientific spirit of modernity. Moltmann differs from Barth, however, in the fact that his underlying preoccupation with the question of theodicy leads him to interpret Barth's theological critique of modernity from within the perspective of modernity's victims. This he accomplishes by retrieving the biblical tradition of eschatologia crucis. Moltmann's political hermeneutic of scripture, which he develops on the basis of the eschatologia crucis, vindicates his salvation-historical approach to nature by offering a substantial critique of the modern techno-scientific spirit. Furthermore, it enables Moltmann's ecological theology to put the crisis of modernity within the broader horizon of the problem of radical evil, thereby offering a profounder hope for the liberation of the suffering creation called for by the WCC theme "Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation."

Previous issue date: 2009-12-01 / This essay is an interdisciplinary reflection of the Theology of Creation. It aims to present a theological analysis of the origin of the universe as well as the prominent part played in it by the intelligent phenomenon, based on the relationship between Cosmology, specifically the Cosmological Anthropic Principle, and the narrative of Creation on as described in Gn1, 1-2.4a.
This study is justified by the necessity of bringing the cosmos back to the theological reflection, on the one hand, while, on the other, by the difficulty experienced by Theology as it deals with subjects related to Cosmology, specifically the origin of the universe.
The basic hypothesis is the unconditional relationship of interdependency that
exists between man and universe. Actually, it is only within the cosmos that the intelligent phenomenon can be fully realized. Therefore, if Theology understands God as the Creator, it follows that Theology has to make clear the proper mechanism that enable it to assert that God is the Creator of the universe.
The work adopts the methodological approach of conceptual parallelism, that is, the theological understanding of creation as it is read in the narrative of Gn 1, 1-2.4a, and the one defined by the Cosmological Anthropic intelligent Principle.
In the end, the present work leads to the following remarkable conclusions: the impossibility of using the cosmological discoveries and their conceptions to attest the existence of a Creator; the connection between man and universe; the strengthening of a theological view that realizes the intelligent phenomenon not as an efficient cause in the cosmos, but as the originator of a finality to it; a convergence of both theological and cosmological reflections to an ecological ethics as a way to respect the evolutive process of life, and, as a consequence, to care for it / A presente dissertação é uma reflexão interdisciplinar sobre a Teologia da Criação.
Somente no interior do cosmo é possível pensar a importância do fenômeno inteligente humano.

De l'écologie à l'écosophie : l'intuition de Raimon Panikkar / From ecology to ecosophy : the Raimon Panikkar’s intuitionValverde Campos, Juan Carlos 07 October 2016 (has links)
The environmental crisis has disrupted the lives and activities of man. The ecological movement has proposed solutions to the problems we face, but it always uses the same Logos that got us into these difficulties. Theology, however has focused on this question only recently. It answered to criticisms with a renewed theology of creation. Our author of interest, Raimon Panikkar, proposes to complement this approach with a new Trinitarian theology. What he called the “cosmotheandric intuition” establishes a constitutive close relationship between God, man and the cosmos. This intuition means paying special attention to wisdom. It is therefore urgent that ecology walks hand in hand with ecosophy. To this end, mankind ought to cultivates the virtues that will allow it to reconnect with the others dimensions of reality. This new approach has two fondamental corollaries : an ecosophical ethics and a ecosophical political theology, that we intend to develop in order to prolong on Panikkar’s thought.

The Mystery of Creation, The Sacrament of Creation : Baptismal Theology in the Encounter between Tradition and SituationHammar, Anna Karin January 2009 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate theological understandings in conjunction with the baptism of children and to develop such of these understandings as can be seen to be “trovärdiga” (credible or trustworthy) in the contemporary context of Church of Sweden. The theoretical point of departure is taken in a hermeneutical theological method of correlation between interpretation of “Situation” and interpretation of “Tradition”. A trustworthy theology emerges in a critical and/or constructive encounter between the interpretation of Tradition and the interpretation of Situation. Such an encounter can be established within an area of problematics. Three problem areas are identified that are present in the Swedish context of baptizing children in Church of Sweden. A) The first problem area concerns the theological interpretation of the relationship between those baptized and those not in a pluralistic society. B) Theological interpretation of “destruction” and what the theological tradition names original sin. How can a trustworthy baptismal theology be developed that takes suffering, oppression, the ecological crisis, seriously in the present situation and at the same time handle or solve the problems related to the theological tradition of original sin? C) How can a trustworthy baptismal theology solve or handle the problems related to a dichotomous construct of the relationship between God and the world? Four types of material are analyzed: sociological and statistical material, ecumenical theological resources for interpreting baptism, two different orders of baptism at use in Church of Sweden and baptismal liturgies celebrated according to these orders of baptism, and primarily Oriental Orthodox traditions of the Baptism of Jesus. Several understandings are developed and among them three over-arching concepts found fruitful for solving or handling the problems concerned: the baptismal tradition connected to the Baptism of Jesus interpreted in the light of A Trinitarian Theology of Creation that understands baptism as an expression of The Mystery of Creation, The Sacrament of Creation .

Creation and Salvation : models of relationship between the God of Israel and the Nations in the book of Jonah, in Psalm 33 (MT and LXX) and the novel Joseph and Aseneth / Création et Salut : modèles de relation entre le Dieu d'Israël et les nations dans le Livre de Jonas, le Psaume 33 (TM et LXX) et le roman Joseph et AsénethScialabba, Daniela 30 November 2017 (has links)
The starting point of this study is the current debate on monotheism and religious pluralism. In recent decades, this debate has been strongly influenced by some authors such as Jan Assmann for whom the monotheism originating in the Old Testament is the root of the intolerance and violence of the three monotheistic religions. Rather than participating at this debate, the intention of this study is to answer the following questions: what about inclusive tendencies in Old Testament monotheism? Thus, this thesis is aimed at looking into the theological principles motivating and supporting the possibility of an approach by individuals and peoples to the God of Israel. With this aim, our objective is to analyse three texts where the relationship between YHWH, Israel and the non-Israelites is examined: the book of Jonah, Psalm 33 (MT and LXX), and the novel, Joseph and Aseneth. Although these three texts are different concerning their genre, period and provenance, they have the following ideas in common: the relationship between the God of Israel and non-Israelites as well as the concept of God as an universal creator who has pity of all his creatures.

Creation and God as One, Creator, and Trinity in early theology through Augustine and its theological fruitfulness in the 21st centuryEllingwood, Jane January 2015 (has links)
My primary argument in this thesis is that creation theologies significantly influenced early developments in the doctrine of the Trinity, especially in Augustine of Hippo’s theology. Thus this is a work of historical theology, but I conclude with proposals for how Augustine’s theologies of creation and the Trinity can be read fruitfully with modern theology. I critically analyse developments in trinitarian theologies in light of ideas that were held about creation. These include the doctrine of creation ‘out of nothing’ and ideas about other creative acts (e.g., forming or fashioning things). Irenaeus and other early theologians posited roles for God (the Father), the Word / Son, the Spirit, or Wisdom in creative acts without working out formal views on economic trinitarian acts. During the fourth century trinitarian controversies, creation ‘out of nothing’ and ideas about ‘modes of origin’ influenced thinking on consubstantiality and relations within the Trinity. Basil of Caesarea and others also presented ideas about trinitarian acts of creation and the Trinity in hexaemeral works. I will argue that in Augustine’s views of trinitarian acts of creation, he attributes roles to God (the Father), the Word / Son, and the Spirit. In his mature theology, he attributes the giving of formless existence, differentiated existence, and perfected existence to the three Persons respectively, while depicting shared roles. He also attributes to the Spirit the giving of the capability of ‘dynamic abiding’ to creatures, which gives them agency in continuing their existence. Augustine’s theologies of creation and the Trinity were significantly influenced by his exegesis of Gen. 1, John 1. 1-3, Wisdom, and other scriptures, and his ideas resonate with the hexaemeral works of Basil and Philo of Alexandria. I argue that scholars should examine these sources and Augustine’s own hexaemeral commentaries to gain a deeper understanding of his trinitarian theology.

Charismen Entdecken: Eine praktisch-theologische Untersuchung in der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Baden / Discovering Chrismata : a practical theological inquiry in the United Lutheran Church of BadenBaumert, Manfred Otto Willi 03 1900 (has links)
Summary and key words in German and English / Every church faces the challenge of procuring capable workers for the multifaceted task of ministry. For
several decades now official denominational statements and the discipline of Practical Theology have
been calling for a new understanding of giftedness in ecclesial service. As yet little fundamental research
has been done in this area. This dissertation seeks to make a contribution both empirically and
theologically. It marks the first time in the German–speaking world of Practical Theology that the issue
of how one discovers charisms is addressed academically. The specific field of research is located in the
Protestant Regional Church of Baden in southwest Germany. Nevertheless the findings can be applied
more broadly since the research is based on thorough exegetical and systematic–theological analysis and
has been verified empirically.
There has been a quest for the charisms of the Spirit since the beginning of the twentieth century and
even more so now in the face of the societal challenges of postmodernity. In the discussion of the
different theological positionens arise as result that charisms have to be seen with an triune approach. In
addtion, besindes the fact that charisms have a habitual meaning, they first of all have a relational
dimension. The empirical research involved online–interviewings of pastors, plus interviews of church
members. One of the major findings was that the views of pastors on how church members receive gifts
is determined by their theological understanding of the charisms. Pastors discover gifts, not according to
Pauline criteria, but largely according to emotional aspects, as proved by this research. It became
apparent that protestant pastors are of the opinion that New Testament charisms are not first received at
baptism, but already at birth. Another interesting finding is that members of both protestant main stream
churches and pentacostal-charismatic churches hold the same believes about how to receive charisms.
The only difference is their repertoire of gifts. This dissertation focuses on developing guidelines for the
discovery of charisms within the congregation as the local body of the Church.
Practical Theology / Thesis (D. Th. (Practical Theology))
