An experimental investigation of the effects of mouthpiece control on alto saxophone tone in the student player

Good tone is one of an alto saxophone player's greatest assets and consequently deserves high priority in training and pedagogy. The current pedagogical literature gives little attention to tone production on the saxophone. The mouthpiece is the link between the player and the saxophone. This study examined the effect of the normal mouthpiece pitch and the pitch range produced on the saxophone mouthpiece on alto saxophone tone quality . In this experimental study, recordings were made of forty-three student alto saxophone players who performed tasks consisting of three saxophone mouthpiece exercises and four short musical phrases on the saxophone. The tape recordings were used to provide a spectral analysis of the tone samples by Fast Fourier Transform Analysis, and to allow qualitative analysis by five expert judges. The judges used a saxophone listening profile to provide qualitative evaluation of the recordings. Cluster analysis produced three groups of subjects according to combinations of the mouthpiece pitch and range produced. The mean sustained mouthpiece pitch and mouthpiece range of the groups were: Cluster 1 - 790 Hz and 550 cents; Cluster 2 1023 Hz and 150 cents: and Cluster 3 - 820 Hz and 1203 cents. Analysis of variance was used to test for statistically significant differences between the clusters. Discriminant analysis was used to identify other variables which contributed to the formation of the three clusters. The quantitative analysis of both mouthpiece and saxophone tones provided no insight into the spectra of the student subjects. The qualitative analysis using bipolar descriptors provided valid criteria which could be applied consistently for the analysis of student saxophone tone. A Tonal Index was computed from the judges' ratings in order to test for differences in tone between the clusters. Analysis of variance tests showed significant differences in the tone produced by the clusters on both the mouthpiece and the saxophone. The tone produced by Cluster 3 was significantly different to that produced by Clusters 1 and 2 at the p < .05 level. Discriminant analysis identified the use of saxophone tone models (through comparative critical listening) and small group performance as significant predictor variables (at the p < .05 level) in the formation of the clusters. The results of this study suggest that tone production on the alto saxophone is improved through the development of control on the mouthpiece. It was concluded that routine practice with the mouthpiece can serve in the development of a flexible and responsive embouchure and oral cavity and that students need to develop a mental concept of saxophone tone as part of the development of tone production. Also, experience in small group performance needs to be sought and provided for saxophone students. Finally, this study focussed on an area of mouthpiece behaviour which can easily be included into any instructional design and monitored by teachers.

長久以來,漢語中詞彙的並列關係已經受到許多漢語學者的注意。本文以大約可被認為是秦代之前成書的十本史書及子書作為研究資料,對當時詞彙的並列使用作一些研究。本文共分為六章。第一章是動機、範圍、材料及內容簡述。第二章對於「並列結構」一詞的界定作一鑑別標準及說明,並將以前學者的研究意見作整理。另外,也簡單說明並列結構的基本詞數是兩個單音詞。第三章討論並列結構的語法功用,發現並列結構在動詞組合和名詞組合之間的語法功用是不同的。而趨向動詞並列結構也可由其特徵分作五類。第四章說明詞序的情形。並列結構中有百分之十有詞序顛倒的情形。第五章研究聲韻對詞序的影響。我們發現,除了聲調以外,聲母和韻母也對詞序有影響。第六章是結論。

Evaluation of tone mapping operators for use in real time environments

<p>As real time visualizations become more realistic it also becomes more important to simulate the perceptual effects of the human visual system. Such effects include the response to varying illumination, glare and differences between photopic and scotopic vision. This thesis evaluates several different tone mapping methods to allow a greater dynamic range to be used in real time visualisations. Several tone mapping methods have been implemented in the Avalanche Game Engine and evaluated using a small test group. To increase immersion in the visualization several filters aimed to simulate perceptual effects has also been implemented. The primary goal of these filters is to simulate scotopic vision. The tests showed that two tone mapping methods would be suitable for the environment used in the tests. The S-curve tone mapping method gave the best result while the Mean Value method gave good results while being the simplest to implement and the cheapest. The test subjects agreed that the simulation of scotopic vision enhanced the immersion in a visualization. The primary difficulties in this work has been lack of dynamic range in the input images and the challenges in coding real time graphics using a graphics processing unit.</p>

Flash Photography Enhancement via Intrinsic Relighting

We enhance photographs shot in dark environments by combining a picture taken with the available light and one taken with the flash. We preserve the ambiance of the original lighting and insert the sharpness from the flash image. We use the bilateral filter to decompose the images into detail and large scale. We reconstruct the image using the large scale of the available lighting and the detail of the flash. We detect and correct flash shadows. Focus and Tone

The information-structural category focus is usually marked by syntactic and morphological means in these languages, but sometimes also by intonation strategies. In intonation languages, focus is marked by pitch movements, which are also perceived as tone. The present article discusses prosodic focus marking in these two language types.

The puzzle of non verbal communication: Towards a new aspect of leadership

Communication is surrounding us. Leaders and followers are not an exception to that rule. Indeed, leadership actors are communicating with their co-workers, their boss, their employees, the media, and so forth. However, in the course of this paper and because of its importance, the focus on non verbal communication will be adopted. Basically, this form of communication is everything except the actual words that people pronounce. Body language, tone of the voice, cultural differences, deceit signals, all these components of non verbal communication and many others will be developed. The core of this work will be understanding the main concepts of non verbal communication and then applying them to leaders’ real life situations.   This thesis will also, among other things, aim to answer the following questions: What is the importance of non verbal communication in everyday life? How are leaders using non verbal communication to give sense? Do they use deceit signals? What influences the non verbal communication? What is the emotional intelligence concept? Can the non verbal communication be extrapolated and be seen as being inter-cultural?

Ethnic and Racial Differences in Emotion Perception

This study analyzed racial differences in the way African Americans and Caucasians perceive emotion from facial expressions and tone of voice. Participants were African American (n=25) and Caucasian (n=26) college students. The study utilizes 56 images of African American and Caucasian faces balanced for race and sex from the NimStim stimulus set (Tottenham, 2006). The study also utilized visual and auditory stimuli form the DANVA2. Participants were asked to judged emotion for each stimulus in the tasks. The BFRT, the WASI, and the Seashore Rhythm test were used as exclusionary criteria. In general the study found few differences in the way African Americans and Caucasians perceived emotion, though racial differences emerged as an interaction with other factors. The results of the study supported the theory of universality of emotion perception and expression though social influences, which may affect emotion perception, is also a possibility. Areas of future research were discussed.

Oxygen free radicals : mediators of vascular tone

<i>In vivo</i> and <i>in vitro</i> studies on numerous types of blood vessels obtained from a variety of vascular beds and species have demonstrated that oxygen free radicals (OFRs) can evoke both vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Specific OFRs have been shown to elicit different and often times opposite effects on vascular smooth muscle. Therefore, this thesis attempts to define the vascular actions and mechanism of oxygen free radicals (OFRs) [superoxide anion (O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup>), hydrogen peroxide (HO<sub>2</sub>) and hydroxyl radical (OH)] on isolated rabbit aorta. This thesis will examine the role of OH in Ach- and nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced relaxation of isolated rabbit aorta. Superoxide anions generated by xanthine (X) plus xanthine oxidase (XO) produced concentration-dependent contractions of isolated rabbit aorta. The contractile response to O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> was completely abolished in preparations denuded of endothellum or pretreated with superoxide dismutase (SOD), a scavenger of O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup>. The contractile response was reduced by indomethacin (I), a cyclooxygenase inhibitor. These results suggest that O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> mediated by vasoconstrictor arachidonic acid metabolites. Hydrogen peroxide generated by glucose and glucose oxidase produced contraction (low concentrations) and relaxation followed by contraction (high concentrations) in isolated rabbit aorta. The contractile response was abolished in the presence of catalase, a scavenger of H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> however the relaxant effect was exaggerated. Indomethacin markedly reduced the H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-induced contraction. Relaxation was completely prevented by de-endothelialization or pretreatment with N<sup>G</sup>-monomethyl-L-arginine (LNMMA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthetase. These results suggest that H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> in large concentrations produces a biphasic response, relaxation followed by contraction. Relaxation is endothelium dependent and is mediated by endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF), nitric oxide (NO). The contractile response is endothelium independent and is mediated by vasoconstrictor arachidonic acid metabolites of smooth muscle. Hydroxyl radicals generated by dihydroxyfumarate (DHF), ferric chloride (FeCl<sub>3</sub>) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) (DHF/FeCl<sub>3</sub>-ADP) produced concentration dependent relaxations of NE-precontracted rabbit aorta. Mannitol (Ml) completely inhibited OH-induced relaxation. Relaxation was markedly reduced in aortic rings mechanically denuded of endothelium. The relaxant effect was reduced by an inhibitor of NO synthesis (LNMMA), by an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase (methylene blue), by an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (indomethacin) and by an inhibitor of an ATP-sensitive K<sup>+</sup> channel blocker (glyburide). These results indicate that OH produces relaxation that is endothelium-dependent and partially mediated by an endothelium-derived relaxing factor (NO), vasodilatory arachidonic acid metabolites and an ATP-sensitive K<sup>+</sup> channel. We hypothesized that Ach-induced vascular relaxation is mediated by OH derived from the interaction of NO and O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup>. To test this hypothesis we investigated the effect of Ach and NTG on NE-precontracted isolated rabbit aortic preparations in the absence or presence of scavengers of O<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> (SOD), and OH (dimethylthiourea (DMTU) or mannitol or Garlicin). The OFR scavengers (SOD, dimethylthiourea, mannitol, garlicin and histidine) alone or the combination of SOD and DMTU markedly reduced Ach- or NTG-induced relaxation. However, the combination of histidine, (a <sup>1</sup>O<sub>2</sub> scavenger) SOD and DMTU completely abolished Ach-induced relaxation.

Advanced Multi-Function Texture Unit Design

With the growing demand of embedded graphics applications, how to provide an efficient graphics hardware acceleration solution has drawn much attention. It is well known that computer graphics contains two major domains: two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) graphics. Each domain owns large amounts of applications, such that general embedded platforms will require both graphics acceleration supports. This thesis proposes an advanced texture unit architecture which can provide various 3D texture filtering functions including trilinear, anistrophics filtering etc , and 2D coloring, painting, and texturing functions. Our proposed design consists of a core computation unit, and a set of data registers. The equations for those supported functions are decomposed into a series of basic arithmetic operations such as multiply-add-accumulation, multiply, etc executed by the core computation unit. To evaluate those equations for each pixel may require some pre-computed parameters which will be computed outside our unit in advance by the system¡¦s micro-controller. The equations can be computed by our texture unit based on the selected finite-state machine sequences which is stored in the on-chip control table. By updating those sequences can change the functionality provided by our chip. The overall cost of the proposed unit is about 28.36k gates. In addition to various texturing functions, this thesis also proposes an implementation of texture function for high-dynamic range (HDR) textures. HDR textures can provide various color details according to the frame¡¦s global illumination environment. Therefore, the 3D rendering system has to incorporate a tone-mapping mechanism to map the HDR image into normal color range of output display system. To reduce the overall tone-mapping implementation cost, this thesis uses an extra accumulator between the standard per-fragment rendering pipeline stages to accumulate the global illumination intensity based on the depth comparison result of the incoming pixel. After all of the pixels have passed through the pipeline stages, every pixel of the stored rendering result will be fetched into a mapping unit which will generate its mapping color in the normal dynamic range. The overall cost of the additional hardware for the realization of HDR textures is about 6.98k gates.
