The Role of Victims’ Self-Efficacy in Perceptions of Blanket Amnesty and Engagement in Transitional Justice Processes: : May 27 Massacre, 1977, and The Blank Amnesty in Angola

G.Pinto, Diana January 2021 (has links)
How do victims of violence perceive blanket amnesties as part of transitional justice mechanisms in war-torn societies? The amnesty law is critical for conflict resolutions and post-conflict reconciliation processes. Governments and third parties use amnesties as a transitional justice instrument to end the violence because it ensures that conflict leaders will accept to engage in peace talks. However, a blanket amnesty restrains the victims’ narratives of past atrocities in the transitional justice process in exchange for peace. The amnesty in Angola illustrates this policy. The attempt to balance past and future avoids the risks of too much truth-telling from breaking peace negotiations. In a situation where peace and justice compete, this paper considers the victims as agents in the process.  To this end, I enquire about the victims’ views about blanket amnesty. To find out, I explore the victims’ perceptions of the blanket amnesty in Angola and their engagement in transitional justice processes through their self-awareness. Specifically, how they apprehend their capabilities and social-political environment opportunities to change. For this purpose, I used Bandura’s self-efficacy theory of human agency to glean the victims’ consciousness of the political environment and capabilities. I argue that the victims’ self-efficacy level determines their perceptions of blanket amnesty and engagement as part of the transitional justice process that inflicts such an overwhelming impact on their lives. This study offers a micro-level interdisciplinary perspective to the transitional justice study field.

Documentary as a Medium to Advance a Public Apology to Comfort Women in a Transitional Justice Context

Wang, Jenny January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores how the documentary film The Apology (as a medium) and its filmmaker (as a carrier group) functions as connection points between cultural trauma and transitional justice reparations driving social change. Earlier approaches to bringing justice to comfort women have been based on legal frameworks which this thesis considers restrictive and instead examines justice and reparations from a victim-centred perspective. To dig for details about how the protagonists' and the filmmaker understand justice, this thesis conducted a narrative analysis of the documentary film The Apology and an interview with the film director. Connecting theories from cultural trauma and transitional justice, the findings show a lack of higher levels of participation of the comfort women in designing and implementing justice and reparation programmes. The documentary produced new master narratives that facilitated the comfort women’s identity shift from passive receivers to active seekers of justice and reparations. This thesis concludes that carrier groups are humane agents with the ability to create powerful influencing narratives to support collective identity shaping, awareness raising, and push for social change and government actions. Finally, an effective public apology must be victim-centred and truthful. Otherwise, it risks remaining as a nice-looking political gesture to deceive the public.

This doesn´t sound like safe care”;hospital nurses and home care nurses’ experiences of transitional care : A qualitative focus groups study

Lilljeqvist, Linda January 2021 (has links)
Background: Reduced number of inpatient care places and early discharges have led to more patients needing to continue care at home. Previous research shows that regional and municipal nurses experience that they work in different worlds without understanding each other and that shortcomings in communication and information transmission can lead to injuries, risk of readmission and even death. Aim: To describe hospital nurses and home care nurses experiences of transitional care of patients in need of surgical care. Design: A qualitative focus group study. Method: Semistructured focus groups interviews with seven hospital nurses and seven nurses from two municipalities in the middle of Sweden. Result: The study shows that there are large differences between inpatient care and municipal health care in terms of resources and conditions for caring for patients. Lack of communication and information transfer makes healthcare difficult to work in the municipalities that lack the access to patient records, materials and medicines. Conclusion: The nurses have a need for insight into each others work context and clear routines for patient transfers. Better teamwork for all involved professions with common goals and structured methods of communication. Access to short-term places would make care and transfers smoother and more secure.

Patienters erfarenheter av delaktighet vid palliativ vård : en litteraturöversikt / Patients´experiences of participation in palliative care : a literature review

Bergfelt, Andrea, Juhlin Fredriksson, Anna January 2024 (has links)
Background Palliative care aims to ease and prevent suffering, it is a form of care that focuses on improving and maintaining people’s quality of life. If people’s needs are recognized at an early stage, better quality of care can be provided. All people in need of palliative care must get access to it. Participation means that patients get a chance to promote their health, strengthen their autonomy and use their own resources to do it. It has been shown that active patient participation can be beneficial, therefore its relevant to gather more knowledge about patients experiences to then be able to use it from a health promoting perspective. Aim The aim of this study was to highlight patients’ experiences of participation in palliative care. Method The method of this study was a non-systematic literature review. 15 scientific articles with mixed method, qualitative and quantitative design were included. The databases used were CINAHL and PubMed. The articles have been quality reviewed based on Sophiahemmet University´s assessment tool for scientific classification and quality. To finally compile the results, an integrated data analysis was used. Results Two main categories were identified in the study results: Positive experiences of participation and Negative experiences of participation. Positive experiences of participation were divided into three subcategories which were good communication, increased well-being and trust and confidence. Negative experiences were also divided into three subcategories which were feeling overlooked, sense of meaninglessness and lack of information. Conclusions The result showed the importance of a person-centered approach of participation in palliative care. It emerged that increased participation led to improved quality of life for the patients. As a health care professional, it is important to work person-centered because every situation and every patient is unique. Shared decision-making generally increased the sense of participation in palliative care.

Influence of Mindfulness Practices on Feelings of Place Illusion in Virtual Reality

van Almkerk, Marc January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates how mindfulness influences feelingsof place illusion in Virtual Reality (VR) experiences, i.e. the feeling of being inside the mediated world that is displayed through the VR technology. To research the effects, a design called Mindsition was proposed that consist of two Virtual Environments (VEs) that transfers the user from the physicalworld to a task environment in VR and altering the user’s state of mind. In the first VE, a guided meditation exercise was introduced to bring the user to a more mindful state, changing how the mediated world was perceived. The user was then brought to the task environment to complete a task. The design was evaluated using a between-subjects experimental design in which half of the participants were exposed to the entire experience, while the other half only experienced the task environment. Results are inconclusive, but revealed tentative evidence that the Mindsition does increase feelings of place illusion, as participants felt more captivated by the environment and had a stronger overall feeling of ’being inside’ the VE. However, the results also show that Mindsition compromises reality judgement, i.e. how veritable the environment felt, as participants were more aware that the virtual world co-existed with the physical world. Overall, the study suggests that Mindfulness has the potential to make users more observant about various aspect of the VE and place less attention on the fact that the environment is perceived through a screen, making memories about the VR experience more vivid. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to place illusionas well as mindfulness, and directions are given for future research.
