The fit of the South African National Defence Force male combat trousers

Laba, Angelica 01 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech. (Fashion, Dept. of Visual Arts and Design)--Vaal University of Technology. / This study was contracted by the African Warrior Project of the South African National Defence Force (SAND F), which focuses on the needs of the future soldier. Fit problems cause the wearers of these combat trousers physical discomfort during routine physical training as the trousers restrict movement. The goals of the study were to investigate problems experienced by the male soldiers regarding the fit of the combat trousers, and to make recommendations regarding possible fit solutions. The objectives of this study were to determine the nature of the fit complaints in terms of the wearer characteristics and activities related to aesthetic and functional aspects; to analyse the design of the combat trousers in terms of size, key dimensions, proportion, balance and ease to determine the source of the fit the problems; and to analyse the f1t of the combat trousers against the subjective fit preferences of the wearers, and objective fit opinions of an expert. The target population of the study was the male SANDF members in the target age group of the African Warrior Project, namely 18 to 35 years. The first sample group consisted of 60 SANDF members between the ages of 24 to 45 years. The second sample of 24 subjects was selected from the first sample group, using height and body shape as parameters. The methods included biographic profiling, focus group interviews, one-to-one interviews, motor tests, body and garment measuring, photographs, somatographs and pattern analysis. The findings indicate the possibility of an inadequate garment design in relation to specific wearer characteristics such as ethnicity and body shape. The complicated size designation system used, compounded by the waist as the only key dimension provided, contributed to the distribution of the incorrectly sized combat trousers to the wearers. Analysis of the design indicated that it does not adequately accommodate the body characteristics and fit preferences of the subjects, to ensure optimum functionality as well as an acceptable aesthetic appearance. These problems need to be addressed. / ERGOTECH; VUT

Nilsson, Linda January 2016 (has links)
Breeches are a specific garment for equestrians and therefore it occur certain requirements which are not imposed in regular trousers. The background to this writing is that the company asked for a pair of breeches with good fit throughout the size range. A new pattern with good fit is therefore produced. The grading of the trousers was made in view of how the garment will be used and how the body changes in the various sizes. Today there is often no attention dedicated to this. The result is that the garment retains the same proportions in all sizes. To achieve a result has the patterns been made in Lectras software Modaris and the specifications are made in Illustrator and PISA. A good fit in base size is first achieved thru a number of fittings and pattern changes before the grading work started. To verify the grading fittings of selected sizes was performed. Finally will the base size be sewn at a factory and further two sizes will be sewn at Textilhögskolan. The result shows that relatively many changes must be performed on the basic pattern to achieve the desired fit. And that a grading that gives a longer back rise length is creating a better fit for equestrians when sitting in the saddle.

Toresson Grip, Linnea, Gatzwiller, Malin January 2020 (has links)
An existing problem in the clothing industry are garments discarded due to defects. These defects are usually examined in production and not as often after the garments have been worn. This study fills this gap partially by investigating the nature, placement and classification of defects on discarded working trousers. The compiled data showed that the most common critical defects were fabric holes at the front and abrasion at the crotch. After identifying the most common critical defects solutions were developed. Regarding the fabric holes two solutions were created, one was an information sheet on how to handle the garment and another one was a suggestion of change of fabric. Suggested solutions for critical abrasion at the crotch were two different gussets and adjustment of the back rise curve. A survey was conducted to validate and receive comments from the textile industry on the studies results. Regarding the fabric holes, the survey showed that change of fabric as a separate solution or in combination with information about the maintenance of the trousers were the most effective solutions. The survey also showed that gussets were the solutions that was considered the most effective in solving the problem of abrasion at the crotch.

Wheelchair Users Relationship to Clothing : A Study of Incorporating Adaptive Clothing in the Fashion Industry, with an Investigation of Adaptive Trousers and its Functional, Aesthetic and Socio-Psychological Qualities

Wallman, Kajsa, Enocson, Sarah January 2023 (has links)
This study investigates the functional and aesthetic needs in adaptive clothes, with emphasis on trousers for wheelchair users. A pair of trousers were provided by Design by Björk to be investigated and distinguish if the desired consumers' needs are met. It’s important to acknowledge the importance of aesthetic and functional attributes in clothing, to not separate standard and adaptive clothing design. In addition, the socio-psychological impact clothes have on wheelchair users was researched, to emphasize the need for an inclusive fashion industry. In the research process for the study it is acknowledged that previous studies encourage further focus on aesthetically pleasing elementents in adaptive clothing. The aim is to increase awareness of how important this aspect is for the consumer in interaction with functionality. A mixed method approach made with convergent parallel design was used to collect data, utilizing surveys and interviews. It is presented that wheelchair users value the functional, aesthetic and comfortable aspects in clothing equally, and that it is important to not compromise with any aspect in the design process. The study confirms that clothing can have a negative impact on the wheelchair users psychological and physical wellbeing, which is highly related to the lack of clothing in the market range that meets the wheelchair users needs. A sample sketch was developed with suggested improvements for a pair of trousers provided by Design by Björk. The result demonstrates that adding adjustable attributes to the trousers can contribute to increased comfort, aesthetic and functional needs of the consumers.

Suppression of the vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders with permeable meshes.

Cicolin, Murilo Marangon 06 February 2015 (has links)
The phenomenon of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is particularly harmful to submarine structures such as risers used for oil extraction. The most usual way to attenuate the effects of VIV is the installation of suppressors, like strakes or fairings. Among them, All Brow Universal Components developed a VIV suppressor called Ventilated Trousers (VT), which consist of a permeable mesh made of a flexible net and tens of bobbins. Three different models of suppressors based on permeable meshes have been assembled with the objective to understand the hydrodynamic mechanism behind the suppression: one model identical to the VT and two meshes with different bobbin geometries and distribution. Tests were carried out with xed models and models free to oscillate in one degree of freedom varying the structural damping. Displacements, drag and lift forces were measured. Results showed that the VT suppressor reduced vibration amplitudes, lift and drag forces when compared to an oscillating circular cylinder. However, it increased drag force when compared to a fixed circular cylinder. The mesh geometry proved to be important to VIV suppression. Models that had an external disc on the bobbins avoided the appearance of a gap between the model and the cylinder. Three hypotheses were formulated to explain how the VT suppressor works. The first one says that the increase on hydrodynamic damping is responsible for suppression. In fact, tests showed that the VT increased hydrodynamic damping and, consequently, reduced the VIV response. However, this effect alone does not explain the suppression as a whole. The other two hypotheses related to two-dimensional and three-dimensional wake changes were evaluated, but it cannot be stated that any of them, on its own, is responsible for the whole of the suppression mechanism.

Urban kids- Funktionskläder för tuffa miljöer

Göth Nilsson, Annika January 2010 (has links)
AbstractUrban kids- Functional apparel for rough environmentsUrban kids is functional apparel for city children. The aim for this project is to develop functional clothes for the autumn and the winter season which provides a contrast to the designs presented today by outdoor and sports companies. The target group is fashion oriented city parents that do not hesitate to pay a little extra for a product representing their life style. This project provides a foundation of information to support the idea that it is possible to design technically functional outer wear for children without the sporty look.By using brainstorming and a mood board, a picture collage which gives the essence of the product, the concept “rocky playfulness” was developed. This concept is a contrast to the sporty expression.Throughout the whole project the design process has been the guide to reach the goal. This means that the project started with a primary research on materials, sustainable issues and eco-certificate, competitors, safety and guidelines for children’s wear and requirements from the user and the target group. The process continued by brainstorming and sketching in order to present three concepts. By evaluation using a function analysis one final concept was chosen for further processing. The result is a jacket and a pair of trousers as shell garments in order to use it a longer period of time during the season. The parts of the clothes mostly exposed, are enhanced with stronger, more hardwearing fabric. The choice of colors is black. This is due to the inspiration by a rocky attitude where black is often seen, but it is however not the only reason. Black is a more genderneutral color suitable for both boys and girls. It is also a practical color considering that dirt doesn´t appear as clearly as if the garment had a brighter color. One other important aspect of this project is to use material coherent with recycling and a sustainableway of thinking, focusing on finding functional material which supports this. During the research the material Eco Storm, from the Japanese manufacturer Teijin, was found. It is a polyestermembrane with an outer fabric made of recycled polyester. The conclusion of this project is that it is possible to produce/design functional wear with an urban feeling. This is in itself nothing new, it has been used in adult clothing, but the difference is that the technical function materials are excluded in the children’s wear. With Urban kids this is now also an option for the children.

Optimering av material för höftskyddsbyxor : Med hänsyn till motverkandet av fallskador / Optimisation of materials for hip protection trousers : Considering the prevention of fall injuries

Andersson, Felicia, Eriksson, Amanda January 2024 (has links)
Between 2008 and 2021, the number of osteoporosis fractures increased by 30%, mainly due to an increase in the number of elderly people. Osteoporosis is when bone tissue becomes less dense, which results in the bones becoming weaker. One of the most common and serious causes of osteoporosis is fractures of the hips, with between 15 000 and 16 000 fractures occurring each year. Hip protectors can be described as a pair of specially designed underwear with protective plates placed in the trousers bilaterally along the hip to cover the femur. When used correctly, a pair of hip protectors can reduce the risk of sustaining a hip fracture in a fall by up to 60%. Hip protectors are currently available on the market, yet some people choose not to wear them. The literature mentions that common reasons for not using hip protectors are dissatisfaction with aesthetics, comfort and elasticity. The literature also mentions that in order to kill microorganisms, it is important that the textile can be washed at high temperatures. The aim of the study is to investigate the possibility of producing textile materials intended for hip protection trousers without preparations that are comfortable, elastic and maintain their quality after repeated washing at 60°C. The materials selected for the study include different combinations of cellulose fibres, regenerated cellulose fibres and synthetic fibres. Six fabric samples were compared to see if the mechanical properties identified; elasticity, mechanical strength, visual appearance and comfort after washing, can potentially be optimised. Environmental aspects of fibre selection will also be discussed. One company has lent protective plates to the authors of the study. The results of the study support that synthetic fibre materials performed best in the material survey. The results showed that fabric sample two had the highest total value of all six fabric samples. Although the fabric sample had the highest value in the most measurements, the values were not to the extent expected. The results showed that although the fabric sample scored highest, it is unlikely to have the optimum properties for a pair of hip protectors that the study investigated. Overall, the results of this study can serve as a preliminary study for future studies in product development of hip protection trousers.
