Phase Locked Loop and Modulo Games, The Dogma Loops; and “Finding Ibrida”

<p>This dissertation consists of two independent musical compositions and an article detailing the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with particular emphasis on the carefully curated suite of embedded effects. </p><p>The first piece, 'Phase Locked Loop and Modulo Games' is scored for electric guitar and a single echo of equal volume less than a beat away. One could think of the piece as a 15 minute canon at the unison at the dotted eighth note (or at times the quarter or triplet-quarter), however the compositional motivation is more about weaving a composite texture between the guitar and its echo that is, while in theory extremely contrapuntal, in actuality is simply a single [superhuman] melodic line.</p><p>The second piece, 'The Dogma Loops' picks up a few compositional threads left by ‘Phase Locked Loop’ and weaves them into an entirely new tapestry. 'Phase Locked Loop' is motivated by the creation of a complex musical composite that is for the most part electronically transparent. 'The Dogma Loops' questions that same notion of composite electronic complexity by essentially asking a question: "what are the inputs to an interactive electronic system that create the most complex outputs via the simplest musical means possible?"</p><p>'The Dogma Loops' is scored for Electric Guitar (doubling on Ukulele), Violin and Violoncello. All of the principal instruments require an electronic pickup (except the Uke). The work is in three sections played attacca; [Automation Games], [Point of Origin] and [Cloning Vectors]. </p><p>The third and final component of the document is the article 'Finding Ibrida.' This article details the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with integrated effects, while also providing the deeper context (conceptual and technical) which motivated the efforts and informed the challenges to hybridize the various technologies (tubes, transistors, digital effects and a microcontroller subsystem). The project was motivated by a desire for rigorous technical and hands-on engagement with analog signal processing as applied to the electric guitar. ‘Finding Ibrida’ explores sound, some myths and lore of guitar tech and the history of electric guitar distortion and its culture of sonic exploration.</p> / Dissertation

Le Loup ou Bar Dicentrarchus labrax est une espèce euryhaline dont les femelles pondent généralement en eau de mer. Pendant son cycle de vie, des migrations vers les estuaires et les lagunes, peuvent exposer très tôt les jeunes stades à des variations de salinité. Les mécanismes de l'osmorégulation sont bien connus chez les prélarves, les larves et les adultes de D. labrax en eau de mer (EM, 38) et en eau de mer diluée (EMD, 5), cependant les possibilités d'osmorégulation et leurs mécanismes sont inconnus chez les embryons. Le but de cette étude a été d'évaluer la mise en place de la fonction osmorégulatrice chez les embryons de D. labrax.Tout d'abord le développement embryonnaire des différents sites osmorégulateurs a été décrit, en se focalisant sur le tube digestif, en incluant le pharynx et les premières fentes branchiales. La formation de ces structures débute au stade 12 somites (S) et a été décrite jusqu'à l'ouverture de la bouche, 5 jours après l'éclosion.En second lieu, le lieu et la cinétique d'apparition des premières cellules osmorégulatrices, les « ionocytes » ont été recherchés. Ces cellules ont été identifiées au stade 12S sur la membrane de la vésicule vitelline et au niveau des premières fentes branchiales et du tube digestif primitif au stade 14S. La fonctionnalité de ces cellules a été étudiée grâce à des immunomarquages des principales protéines transmembranaires impliqués dans l'osmorégulation [l'ATPase Na+/K+ (NKA), le cotransporteur Na+/K+/2Cl- (NKCC) et le canal à chlore (CFTR)], et avec une étude ultrastructurale. Des ionocytes potentiellement fonctionnels sont présents à partir du stade 25S au niveau de la membrane de la vésicule vitelline et du tube digestif primitif, mais les ionocytes des premières fentes branchiales ne sont pas totalement fonctionnels à l'éclosion. L'existence d'un phénomène de boisson passive qui permettrait la régulation hydrique chez D. labrax est envisagé.Finalement, l'osmorégulation embryonnaire existant en EM et en EMD a été étudiée. Des mesures nanoosmométriques des fluides embryonnaires indiquent une capacité à hyper- et hypo-osmoréguler. Cependant, en EMD, des analyses en qRT-PCR et des immunomarquages de NKA, NKCC et CFTR révèlent que les mécanismes de l'hyper-osmorégulation peuvent limiter les pertes ioniques mais ne sont pas suffisamment efficaces pour permettre une acclimatation totale à l'EMD à ce stade très précoce. / The European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax is a euryhaline species which usually spawns in seawater. Due to its life cycle that includes migrations to lagoon and estuaries, young stages can be exposed early to salinity variations. Osmoregulatory patterns are well known in prelarvae, larvae and adults D. labrax in seawater (SW, 38) and in dilute seawater (DSW, 5), but the possibility and mechanisms of embryonic osmoregulation are still unknown. The goal of this study was to investigate the occurence of the omoregulatory function in the embryos of D. Labrax.First, the embryonic development of the different osmoregulatory sites was described, focusing on the digestive system including the pharynx and the first gill slits. The formation of these structures is initialized at stage 12 somites (S) and was described throughout the opening of the mouth five days after hatching.Secondarily, the time and the location of the occurrence of the first osmoregulatory cells, the ionocytes were followed. These cells were identified at stage 12S on the yolk sac membrane and at stage 14S in the first gill slits and in the posterior primitive gut. The functionality of these cells was studied, using immunostaining of the main ionic transporters involved in osmoregulation [the Na+/K+ ATPase (NKA), the Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC) and the chloride channel (CFTR)], and through ultrastructural investigations. Potentially functional ionocytes are present from stage 25S in the yolk sac membrane and in the gut, but gill slits ionocytes are not fully functional at hatching. Passive drinking is suspected to regulate water balance in D. labrax.Finally, the embryonic osmoregulation in SW and DSW was investigated. Nanoosmometry measurements of the embryonic fluids demonstrated some capabilities of hyper- and hypo-osmoregulation. However, in DSW, qRT-PCR and imunostaining of NKA, NKCC and CFTR, reveal that hyper-osmoregulatory mechanisms can only limit ion loss but are not efficient enough to allow a full acclimation at this early life stage.

Numerical analysis of reflux condensation

Reflux condensation occurs in a vertical tube when there is an upward core flow of vapour (or gas-vapour mixture) and a downward flow of the liquid film. The understanding of this condensation configuration is crucial in the design of reflux condensers and in loss-of-coolant safety analyses in nuclear power plant steam generators. A range of modelling approaches exists for co-current film condensation from gas-vapour mixtures in parallel-plate channels and tubes. These methods are based on marching from the inlet down the tube and do not apply to the reflux condensation. In this research, however, a two-dimensional two-phase model was developed that solves the steady, full elliptic governing equations in both the film and the gas-vapour core flow on a non-orthogonal mesh that dynamically adapts to the phase interface. Gas-vapour shear and heat and mass transfer at the interface were accounted for fundamentally. This modelling is a big step ahead of current capabilities by removing the limitations of previous reflux condensation models which inherently cannot account for the detailed local balances of shear, mass, and heat transfer at the phase interface. The model was developed and applied for co-current and counter-current flows in vertical parallel-plate channels, followed by vertical tubes. In each stage, the model results were compared against the available experimental and numerical data for validation purposes. A wide range of boundary conditions and geometries have been studied to examine the details of co-current and counter-current condensation phenomena. Velocity, temperature, pressure, and gas mass fraction profiles along with the axial variation of various parameters such as local Nusselt number, film thickness, interface and centre-line temperature and gas mass fraction are presented in parametric studies. / February 2017

Postoperative sore throat and hoarseness : clinical studies in patients undergoing general anasthesia

A common problem following general anesthesia is postoperative sore throat (POST) and postoperative hoarseness (PH). Symptoms directly correlated with less satisfaction according to the patients. The overall aim of this thesis was to describe patients' postoperative sore throat and hoarseness after general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation or laryngeal mask airway. As well as to investigate the risk factors that are associated with the symptoms, and to test methods that may prevent sore throat and hoarseness after a general anaesthetics. A total of 889 patients are included in the four studies. Incidence of POST varied from 21% up to 52 % depending on endotracheal tube (ETT) size in women (I-IV) and in men was the incidence 32-38% (III-IV). There were no gender difference in POST in study III and IV. The overall incidence of PH varied from 42- 59% (I-IV) in all patients, with no gender differences (III-IV). Following a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) 19% of the patients had POST and 33% of the patients reported PH. Patients with POST do seem to be able to localize their pain in the throat (IV). Different risk factors are shown to contribute to both POST and PH in men and women (II-III). To intubate with a smaller ETT size, 6.0 vs. 7.0 decreased POST in women in the early postoperative period as well as their discomfort from their POST (I). Only 6% of men who needed a laryngeal mask airway had POST compared to 26% of women. The symptoms are more discomforting after an ETT vs. an LMA up to 24 hours (IV). More patients have sore throat and hoarseness in the early postoperative period, but the symptoms can remain up to almost 5 days postoperatively (I, IV). In summary, sore throat and hoarseness following general anesthesia, affects many patients postoperatively. To intubate women with endotracheal size 6.0 decreases both sore throat and hoarseness postoperatively. Women are more likely than men to have a sore throat when a laryngeal mask airway is used.

Do it Yourself: A Content Analysis of Free Pornographic Tube Sites

In 2008 it was reported that there are approximately 28,258 internet users viewing pornography every second, and that men look at pornography online more than any other subject matter (Eberstadt 2009). Pornography has become a primary tool of sex education for young men (Bowater 2011) with the average age of first exposure being age 11 (Stefan 2012). However, research on viewer understanding and interpretation of the images is scarce. What are boys learning about sexuality as they watch pornography? Do they use pornography as a ‘how-to’ manual expressing a desire to mimic the onscreen act or do they use pornography as a general stimulant expressing a generalized pleasure, interpreting the act in alternative ways? The pro-pornography stance stresses the agency of the viewer, meaning the viewer has the ability to access a broad array of content creating a poly-semiotic or figurative experience. The anti-pornography stance stresses the agency of the industry, meaning the industry pushes a dominant design creating a mono-semiotic or literal experience. The purpose of this study is to look at how viewers of online pornography interpret what they see. By analyzing viewer comments sampled from free pornographic tube sites, this study seeks to understand the extent of viewer agency; do men interpret pornographic images literally or figuratively?

Motion Artifact Reduction in Impedance Plethysmography Signal

The research related to designing portable monitoring devices for physiological signals has been at its peak in the last decade or two. One of the main obstacles in building such devices is the effect of the subject's movements on the quality of the signal. There have been numerous studies addressing the problem of removing motion artifact from the electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals in the past few years. However, no such study exists for the Impedance Plethysmography (IP) signal. The IP signal can be used to monitor respiration in mobile devices. However, it is very susceptible to motion artifact. The main aim of this dissertation is to develop adaptive and non-adaptive filtering algorithms to address the problem of motion artifact reduction from the IP signal.

La prédiction des instabilités fluide-élastique qui se développent dans un faisceau de tubes est importante pour la conception des générateurs de vapeur dans les centrales nucléaires, afin de prévenir les accidents liés à ces instabilités. En effet, ces instabilités fluide-élastique, ou flottements, conduisent à une fatigue vibratoire des matériaux, voire à des chocs entre les tubes, et par la suite, à des dégâts importants. Ces aspects sont d'une grande complexité pour les applications scientifiques impliquant l'industrie nucléaire. Le présent travail est issu d'une collaboration entre l'EDF, le CEA et l'IMFT. Elle vise à améliorer la simulation numérique de cette interaction fluide- structure dans le faisceau de tubes, en particulier dans la gamme de paramètres critiques favorisant l'apparition d'un amortissement négatif du système et de l'instabilité fluide-élastique. / The prediction of fluid-elastic instabilities that develop in a tube bundle is of major importance for the design of modern heat exchangers in nuclear reactors, to prevent accidents associated with such instabilities. The fluid-elastic instabilities, or flutter, cause material fatigue, shocks between beams and damage to the solid walls. These issues are very complex for scientific applications involving the nuclear industry. This work is a collaboration between EDF, CEA and IMFT. It aims to improve the numerical simulation of the fluid-structure interaction in the tube bundle, in particular in the range of critical parameters contribute to the onset of damping negative system and the fluid-elastic instability.
