Les captures accessoires et les rejets sont inhérents à la pêche depuis toujours mais ce n’est que récemment, avec l’intérêt croissant pour l’approche écosystémique des pêches, qu’une attention particulière est portée à ces sujets aussi bien dans le domaine de la recherche que celui de la gestion des pêches. Le travail présenté dans cette thèse porte sur l’estimation, la caractérisation et la gestion des captures accessoires et des rejets de la pêcherie thonière tropicaleeuropéenne à la senne des océans Atlantique et Indien. La thèse est basée sur les données de livre de bord et celles collectées par les observateurs embarqués à bord des navires de pêche français et espagnols dans le cadre du programme européen de collecte de données DCF (Data Collection Framework). Les prises accessoires et les rejets des océans Atlantique et Indien sont évalués à partir de méthodes statistiques de complexités variables en fonction des questions posées : estimations globales versus locales et/ou par mode de pêche. Une analyse des précisions et biais d’estimation est présentée ainsi qu’une étude comparative des méthodes d’estimation des prises accessoires. Les caractéristiques des prises accessoires et des rejets sont également détaillées. Cette thèse propose un panorama assezcomplet des problématiques liées à la capture accessoire et aux rejets de la pêcherie thonière tropicale européenne à la senne. Elle fait également des propositions pour améliorer la qualité des estimations, réduire les prises accessoires et valoriser les rejets. / Bycatch and discards has always been inherent in fishing but it is only recently, with the growing interest in ecosystem approach to fisheries, that particular attention is paid to these topics both in research and fisheries management.The work presented in this thesis focuses on the estimation, characterization and management of bycatch and discards in the European tropical tuna purse seine fishery of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The thesis is based on logbook data andon data collected by observers on board the French and Spanish fishing vessels in the framework of the European data collection programme DCF (Data Collection Framework). Bycatch and discards of Atlantic and Indian Oceans are estimated from statistical methods of various level of complexity according to the questions : global versus local estimations and/or by fishing mode. An analysis of precision and bias in bycatch estimates and a comparative analysis of methods for estimating bycatch are presented. The characteristics of bycatch and discards are also detailed. This thesis proposes a complete overview of issues related to bycatch and discards of the European tropical tuna purse seine fishery. It also makes suggestions to improve the quality of estimates, to reduce bycatch and to valorize the discards.

A exigência de alimento proteico palatável e de alto valor nutricional torna a dieta dos peixes carnívoros altamente dependente de farinha de peixe [FP], alimento de alto custo e já escasso no mercado. Hidrolisados de subprodutos da indústria animal são alimentos de alta qualidade que podem ser usados para substituir a FP nas dietas para peixes. Este trabalho foi realizado em dois ensaios: o primeiro avaliou a digestibilidade de hidrolisados de resíduos de tilápia [RTI], cabeças de atum [CAT], fígados de suínos [FSU] e de aves [FAV] e a influência da inclusão dos hidrolisados nas dietas no perfil de enzimas digestivas nos estômagos, cecos pilóricos e intestinos de juvenis (39,73 ± 5,30 g) do Characiforme carnívoro dourado, Salminus brasiliensis; o segundo ensaio avaliou o desempenho de juvenis de dourados (4,57 ± 1,25 g) alimentados com níveis crescentes de inclusão de FSU (0, 70, 140, 210 e 280 g kg-1) na dieta. A inclusão dos hidrolisados na formulação das dietas diminuiu o pH das rações mas não interferiu no consumo pelos peixes. Os maiores coeficientes de digestibilidades dos nutrientes foram registrados em peixes alimentados com as dietas contendo RTI e FSU, enquanto os menores foram encontrados para aqueles alimentados com as dietas contendo CAT. A atividade da protease e da lipase foi maior nos estômagos dos animais, em especial aqueles que foram alimentados com a dieta contendo FSU. A atividade de amilase foi maior nos cecos pilóricos, enquanto nos intestinos foi registrada maior atividade nas dietas controle e RTI. Hidrolisados de subprodutos da indústria animal foram altamente digestíveis para dourados e o perfil enzimático dos peixes foi dependente dos nutrientes da dieta. No segundo ensaio os menores valores de ingestão diária foram registrados nos peixes alimentados com a dieta sem inclusão de hidrolisado, mas os menores valores de ganho de peso, peso final e das taxas de crescimento específico, de eficiência proteica e energética, e de retenção proteica foram registrados nos peixes alimentados com a dieta contendo 280 g kg-1 de hidrolisado suíno. A grande proporção de aminoácidos livres e pequenos peptídeos nas dietas com inclusões acima de 140 g kg-1 do produto aparentemente reduziu a síntese de proteínas dos animais. A saúde dos peixes não foi afetada significativamente pela inclusão de hidrolisados na dieta, porém, aparentemente, os peixes alimentados com dietas contendo até 140 g kg-1 de hidrolisado tiveram melhores índices imuno-hematológicos. / Carnivorous fish diets strongly depend on fish meal (FM), a high-cost, scarce feedstuff, given the need for palatable protein and high nutritious value. Animal by-product hydrolysates are high-quality feedstuff that can substitute FM in fish diets. This study evaluated digestibility of hydrolysates from tilapia residue [TR], tuna head [TH], swine liver [SL] and poultry liver [PL], and the profile of digestive enzymes in the stomachs, pyloric cecum and intestines of juvenile (39,73 ± 5,30 g) dourado, Salminus brasiliensis, a carnivorous Characin fed diets containing graded levels of hydrolysates, and the performance of juvenile dourado (4,57 ± 1,25 g) fed diets containing increasing levels of FSU (0, 70, 140, 210 and 280 g kg-1). The addition of hydrolysates to diets lowered the pH of feed, but did not alter feed intake by fish. Higher digestibility coefficients of nutrients were recorded for fish fed diets containing TR and SL, and the lower for those fed diets containing TH. Protease and lipase activity in the fish\'s stomach was higher, especially for those fed diets containing SL. Amylase activity was higher in pyloric caeca, while in the intestines the higher activity was registered for fish fed control and TR diets. Animal by-product hydrolysates were highly digestible for dourado, and enzymatic profile of fish depended on nutrients of diets. In the second trial, the lowest values of daily intake were recorded for fish fed diet without inclusion of hydrolysate. However, the lowest weight gain, final weight and specific growth rate, protein and energy efficiency, and protein retention rates were recorded for fish fed diet with 280 g kg-1 of swine hydrolysate. The large proportion of free amino acids and small peptides in the diets with inclusions above 140 g kg-1 of the product apparently reduced the protein synthesis by fish. Health status of fish was not significantly affected by dietary hydrolysates, but apparently, fish fed diets containing more than 140 g kg-1 had better immuno-hematological indices.

Variability in the Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Larval Scombrid Abundance in the Gulf of MexicoHabtes, Sennai Y. 20 November 2014 (has links)
Accurate fishery-independent methods for assessing the abundance of marine fish stocks are important tools for proper pelagic fisheries management. The review and improvement of standardized sampling methods used in fisheries-independent sampling, and the establishment of improved models of abundance and population dynamics utilizing novel statistical techniques for fisheries management will further improve our understanding of the way in which marine fish stocks vary spatially and temporally. One of the most important and longest running surveys of fisheries-independent data in the Southeastern United States is the spring ichthyoplankton survey conducted through the Southeast Area Mapping and Assessment Program (SEAMAP).
These surveys of highly migratory pelagic fish larvae and eggs in the exclusive economic zone of the USA in the Gulf of Mexico have been conducted annually during spring spawning periods (March to June) since 1982 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). A primary focus of this survey is collecting the data used in a larval abundance index of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) for "tuning" population estimates for the western Atlantic stock of this species using virtual population analysis (VPA). As with many other forms of fishery independent data, there is statistical overdispersion of larval fish and high variability in catch rates related to non-static environmental conditions. This variability in catch rates, along with zero-inflated estimates of abundance, i.e. characterized by high numbers of stations with low or zero catches, present problems in deriving accurate and reliable stock assessments for western Atlantic bluefin tuna. The research presented here was conducted in an effort to improve the decision support system used in managing bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic, by improving catch rates of their larvae during spring ichthyoplankton cruises. A major focus of which was to overcome challenges related to reducing the variance of the larval index of abundance.
The research presented here, explored the influence of sampling design and oceanographic conditions on an assemblage of commercially important taxa within the Gulf of Mexico. Such studies are necessary to evaluate differences in habitat utilization within a specific complex or among assemblages of closely related taxa. The spatial and temporal patterns of larval bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) were analyzed in relation to mesoscale patterns of circulation, types of sampling gear used during fishery independent surveys, and in the context of common oceanographic variables associated with the spawning habitat of this iconic pelagic predator. Collaterally the relationship between the above factors on spatial and temporal patterns of the larvae of seven congeneric species of marine fish, whose larvae commonly occur with bluefin tuna, during the spring spawning season in the Gulf of Mexico (Auxis spp., Euthynnus alleteratus Corphaena spp., Katsuwonus pelamis, other Thunnus spp.: Thunnus albacares and Thunnus atlanticus, Istiophoridae, and Xiphias gladius) was investigated.
The historical distribution of abundance in these eight taxa of larval epipelagic fish were analyzed in the context of mesoscale and large scale circulation features in the Gulf of Mexico between 1994 and 2008. Characterization of these features was conducted using concurrent, synoptic satellite altimeter, sea surface temperature (SST), and ocean color (OC) observations. Larval abundance among mesocale features was examined for the eight pelagic fish taxa using permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). All but one taxon, T. thynnus, showed differences in occurrence across features. Additionally only two taxa (X. gladius and Istiophoridae) did not show highest abundances in "Common Waters" of the Gulf of Mexico. The abundance of the eight taxa, when examined in aggregate or as an assemblage, differed significantly between circulation features. However, distributions of individual taxa among circulation features differed for only the other Thunnus spp. taxa, which incorporates Thunnus albacares and atlanticus. The results from this study indicated that for most of the individual taxa studied, and Thunnus thynnus in particular the distribution of spawning habitat in the Gulf of Mexico is not associated with specific patterns in circulation.
To analyze the impact of sampling gear on larval epipelagic abundance, the collection methods of the eight taxa during spring surveys, including a new net sampling methodology tested in surveys between 2009 and 2011, were compared. This new sampling methodology consisted of a 1x2 m frame fitted with a 0.505 mm mesh net, towed in a yo-yo fashion between the surface and 10m depth, referred to as the S-10 net. Sampling effectiveness between gears was compared by examining the abundance and length of the eight taxa of larval fish. A PERMANOVA of net type and time of sampling (day/night) on abundance and mean body length (BL) indicated that net type was a significant factor in assessing abundance and BL for all taxa. Highest mean assemblage and individual taxa abundance for seven of the eight taxa were in S-10 samples. Depth discrete sampling of the upper 50 m indicated that highest abundances for all scombrid taxa were found in the upper 30 m and provided justification for the improved sampling efficiency of the S-10 net. These results indicate that distributions of these epipelagic fish are not truly neustonic and that sampling effectiveness for them strongly depends on depth range fished by the net.
Finally, the results of two research cruises using the new sampling methodology (S-10 net) during the spring of 2010 and 2011 were investigated to explore larval fish assemblages. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates (CAP) was used to evaluate the horizontal distribution of eight taxa of epipelagic larval fish and to relate these distributions to a total of eight variables observed through in-situ and remotely obtained data. Larval assemblages were established for the CAP via unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) hierarchical clustering utilizing similarity profile analysis (SIMPROF) tests for stopping rules. Further refinement to five common assemblage groups was obtained using indicator species values (INDVALS) and percent composition of taxa abundance within groups. Total model accuracy was 54%, with highest classification success for the assemblage group characterized by T. thynnus and the other Thunnus spp. (64%), and lowest classification success for negative stations (22%). Changes in the assemblage of these larval fish were partially explained by the seasonal progression in day-length, and related changes in sea surface temperature. Depth, chlorophyll a concentration, salinity, and optical clarity were also important. Five assemblages of larval fish were identified, characterized by differences in the relative abundance of the five taxa of scombrids, and the Coryphaena spp. taxa, and indicated a high degree of shared spawning habitat. The differences in habitat utilization by these taxa is highly influenced by seasonal changes in sea surface temperature, and large scale differences in depth and water masses in the Gulf of Mexico. This results in a gradual shift from groups with smaller and more abundant coastally influenced taxa with protracted spawning seasons to the larger sub-tropical, more pelagic species across a large expanse of shared spawning habitat.
This dissertation research provides a context to the historical assessment of abundance, evidence for the association of specific taxa with particular oceanographic conditions, and improved assessment capabilities for epipelagic larval fish. As this research shows the spawning habitat of these taxa in the Gulf of Mexico are largely shared, and the influence of environmental variables only partly addressed the spatial and temporal variance attributed to larval abundance in the Gulf of Mexico. The improved methods used in this study will be useful to researchers studying the factors impacting larval recruitment and survival of highly migratory species, and comprehensive ecosystem based resource management. The results will improve fisheries-independent sampling and management for highly migratory species, and provides new methods for evaluating larval fish assemblages within the framework of oceanographic conditions for large marine ecosystems.

In the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP), the operation mode of purse-seine fishing can be divided into dolphin sets and non-dolphin sets. Dolphin sets can catch more yellowfin tuna, but cause a lot of dolphin deaths. On the contrary, non-dolphin sets can catch more skipjack tuna, but discard a lot of tuna. Therefore, the choice of the operation mode to the ETP purse-seine fishery is very influential. If the fishermen use more dolphin sets, they are able to catch high quantity and more valuable yellowfin tuna. Conversely, if the fishermen use more non-dolphin sets, they will not hurt dolphins. But the tuna fish caught by this operation mode is smaller in size and the discarding rate is extremely high which will affect the overall profits of the fishermen. The research will investigate how the fishermen make the choice of the operation mode in the dilemma between dolphin sets which cause dolphins-bycatch and non-dolphin sets which result in tuna-discarding, In addition, if managers can ban dolphin sets or non-dolphin sets to maximize the profit of the fishermen and maintain the ecological balance between tuna and dolphins.

Abstract
In Taiwan, long-line fishing has been the major technique in fishery. With the enhancement of fishing techniques, the fishing zone of Taiwan has spread all over three of World Oceans, and Taiwan has been regarded as one of five largest pelagic fishing countries. Pelagic long-line fishery plays a crucial role in economic development in Taiwan. In recent years, the fishery environments, whether in domestic or foreign fishing zone, have been dramatically changing. Since the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea has been resulted, all of coastal nations have subsequently set up the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) or marine economic development zone, which is stretched out 200 nautical miles from a nation¡¦s coast. However, the establishment of marine economic development zone also brings about the high seas¡¦ largely shrinking. Since the past, the increasing extinction of fish species is mainly resulted from illegal fishing techniques, fishing in the fishing-prohibited zone or during the prohibited period, catching fingerlings and using illegitimate fishing gear. Under such a decreasing fishing circumstance, those Taiwanese long-line fishing vessels under 100 tonnes, mostly fishing in the South Pacific Ocean, are struggling with many changes, such as international fishing limitation, the fishing vessels decreasing policy, the diminishing amount of fish caused by climate changes, the raising oil price and cost. Respecting the situation that most of long-line fishing vessels are managed by ship owners instead of fishery companies, and the fishing-related records are too scarce to provide for reference, this research will explore how the 100-tonne-under long-line fishing vessels owners can manage their business in South Pacific Ocean. All information in this study is acquired from Fisheries Agency in Taiwan and interviews with long-line fishing vessels owners. The questions asked in those interviews mainly target fishing benefit, cost, method of supplies, and the policy on captain and crew management. Based on the analysis of those cases mentioned above, we can figure out the practical operation and management of the 100-tonne-under long-line fishing vessels owners in Taiwan. Furthermore, this study also points out current difficulties in fishery management, providing for those vessels owners as the crucial reference of increasing competitive advantages.

This study used the Gordon-Schaefer model to discuss the equilibrium levels for bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific of open access and present value maximization. And then to compare the catches and the stocks on the two model¡¦s equilibrium value, the result shows the management of bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific tend to present value maximization model. Following that, this paper did sensitivity analysis to understand the impact of the changed parameters on stock size and effort. Finally, using simulation analysis on open access model and present value maximization model. In open access model, the result shows that resources will face extinction crisis if the fishery is not controlled well. In the present value maximization model, the bigeye tuna would be sustainable management. This result is valuable for the fishery management authorities to maintain the development of fishery and cherishing ocean resources at the same time.

The Bioeconomic Analysis of Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus) in the Western and Central Pacific OceanChang, Yu-ching 19 June 2012 (has links)
This study used the Gordon-Schaefer model which was extended to Open Access (OA) model and Present Value Maximization (MPV) model to discuss the equilibrium levels for bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean by purse seine fishery data. I compared the catches and the biomass with the two model¡¦s equilibrium value, and the result showed that the operating mode of bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean tended to the MPV model, and the bigeye tuna resources were diminishing.
In addition, the sensitivity analysis was used in order to understand the impact of various parameter changes on the two fisheries model¡¦s equilibrium value. In the OA model, the change of the price, the cost per unit effort and the catch coefficient would have greater impact on the equilibrium biomass. In the MPV model, the equilibrium biomass was sensitive to the change of the environmental capacity.
Finally, in order to understand whether the management of the Western and Central Pacific Commission (WCPFC) was effective, I used simulation analysis in accordance with the catches restriction and effort restriction management strategies. The result showed that the catches restriction strategy which WCPFC established was still not proper enough. It must cut a large number of catches immediately and continue for some time enough to make the resource recover. The effort restriction strategy could make good effect on the bigeye tuna resource recovery.

The research of Taiwan offshore Tuna fishing industry after vessel-reduction by ICCATPan, Chun-wei 24 July 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACT
Our Atlantic Ultra-Low-Temperature Tuna Fishing fleets were under attack from Japan during the 2004 ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) Annual Meeting. Japan openly called for tough penalty for our fleet such as significantly cutting our fishing quotas in the Atlantic and revoking our national membership in the ICCAT for over-fishing, violating International Conservation Regulations and washing fish right on the ocean. This resulted in catastrophic damage in our Ultra-Low-Temperature fishing operation in the pacific and undue pressure from our international competitors.
Under the strict monitoring of international conservation groups, our government was forced reform its regulations of the fishing industry and focus on the long-neglected area of offshore fishing. To express its sincerity in active management of the industry, the government offered a series of matching measures. The first of these measures was the reduction of the number of ships to achieve cutback in fishing capacity. The three-year plan spanning from 2005 to 2007 involved a joint venture by the government and the offshore industry with joint contribution of 12.5 million US dollars to disassemble 183 large Tuna Long line Fishing Vessels in the three oceans. Fishing vessels in the Atlantic were reduced from 100 to 76. The next measures were to improve the monitoring of the fishing industry and to end any and all illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Do we still possess any competitive advantage after the vessel-reduction measure? This thesis will cover the analysis of the competitive advantage of the Offshore Ultra-Low-Temperature Fishing Industry after the vessel-reduction, the analysis of the supply-and-demand of the Ultra-Low-Temperature market and SWOT analysis. It will also discuss in depth the post-reform fishing industry management strategy for reference.

Total and organic mercury concentrations in white muscles of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) in Pacific OceanLai, Chien-Cheng 25 March 2009 (has links)
The objects of this study were to investigate the differences of total mercury(THg), organic mercury(OHg) concentrations in the muscles of albacore and bigeye tuna from the Pacific Ocean, and the THg and OHg concentration in the livers , and the trace elements (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) in the muscles and livers of albacore, in order to evaluate the bioaccumulative status of the oceanic migratory fishes. Meanwhile, The relationships between mercury concentration and size (length and weight) and age were established, and the differences of mercury concentrations in the
tuna between species and geography were examined. And that the safety consumption level was also discussed.
One hundred eighty-five albacore and 134 bigeye tuna were sampled from the period October 2001 to April 2006 and from September 2005 to November 2006, respectively, in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
The results showed that the average THg (mg/kg flesh wt.) and OHg (mg/kg flesh wt.) of muscles were 0.435¡Ó0.145 and 0.279¡Ó0.087, respectively, for albacore, and 0.935¡Ó0.655 and 0.544¡Ó0.396, respectively, for bigeye tuna. The THg and OHg of livers of albacore were 0.426¡Ó0.363 and 0.193¡Ó0.121, respectively. The average OHg percentages of the THg in albacore and bigeye tuna were 67¡Ó19 % and 62¡Ó20 %, respectively. Except there was no significant correlation between OHg and age in the liver of albacore, the THg and OHg in the muscles, and THg in the livers of albacore, and THg in the muscles of bigeye tuna showed a positive correlation with size and age. The THg and OHg levels in the muscles of albacore were lower than those of bigeye tuna, and the accumulative rates of THg and OHg in albacore were lower than those in bigeye tuna. No significant different of muscles-THg and -OHg concentrations of albacore from the four samplind areas. However, the THg and OHg levels in muscle of bigeye tuna showed that north group higher than those in equator.
The concentrations of THg were similar in muscle and liver of albacore, but those OHg, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations in liver were significantly higher than those in muscle. A detoxificated mechanism may be commenced when the concentration of THg in liver of albacore exceed 0.8 mg/kg, to maintain the muscle concentration of THg at a level about 0.7 mg/kg.
The OHg concentrations of all albacore and 88% of bigeye tuna were below WHO food safety standard for migratory fishes(1.0 mg/kg). The consumption amount of albacore and bigeye tuna were no more than 300 and 150g, respectively, will not exceesed the PTWI(provisional tolerable weekly intake) set by WHO, that will not cause any health threat for consumer.
