Injury and Neighborhood Marginalization: Does it Matter Where You Live?

Lee, Patricia Pui Shuen 15 February 2010 (has links)
Background: Injury is an enormous public health problem in Canada. Recent studies have suggested that characteristics of the residential environment, particularly neighborhood marginalization, may be important in determining injury risk. Objective: To determine whether there is an association between neighborhood marginalization and injury in the largest urban cities of Ontario. Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, ecological study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood marginalization and injury in 0-64 year olds who resided in the ten largest cities of Ontario between 2003-2005. Results: Neighborhoods with high levels of ethnic diversity had significantly lower rates of unintentional injuries, neighborhoods with high levels of material deprivation had significantly higher rates of assaults, and neighborhoods with high levels of residential instability and material deprivation had significantly higher rates of self-inflicted injuries in adults. Conclusions: The association between neighborhood marginalization and injury differs depending on the type of injury examined.

Self-care of older persons in the Potchefstroom district / Tinda Rabie

Rabie, Tinda January 2010 (has links)
The number of older persons is growing at a shocking rate. In spite of this reality, the South African health care sector does not prioritise older persons, causing their health to be poorly managed. Not only does poor health management affect the health of the older person, but also economic factors. This causes a high burden on the public health sector of South Africa, with specific reference to the Primary Health Care (PHC) clinics. PHC clinics in this country are not only overcrowded due to staff shortages, but also owing to the rapidly ageing population and the large number of younger persons affected by the high unemployment rate of South Africa. The above-mentioned factors keep the professional nurses in the clinic from spending time on proper physical examinations and provision of health education to older persons. This causes older persons to lack knowledge regarding self-care, potentially leading to unintentional self-neglect, which decreases their quality of life. Studies conducted on older persons concluded that the older person wants to be involved in health promotion, but needs the necessary knowledge to take care of him- or herself. Therefore, the researcher's overarching aim with this study was to develop guidelines to facilitate self-care amongst older persons. Such guidelines aim at constituting an indirect approach to promote the health of the older person. Health education on self-care should be conducted in self-care support groups, since community experience teaches that some older persons in the community do not apply self-care skills learned without some form of support. The aim with these guidelines is to decrease unintentional self-neglect by empowering the older person to make autonomous decisions regarding self-care, in order to increase quality of life. RESEARCH AIM AND OBJECTIVES In order to reach the overarching aim of this study, which comprises the development of guidelines to facilitate self-care amongst the older persons in the Potchefstroom district, the study firstly includes a literature review to understand self-care and related constructs from a theoretical perspective. Secondly, the Appraisal of self-care agency scale-A (ASA-A) and Exercise of self-care agency scale (ESCA) were used as questionnaires to assess the self-care of the selected older persons. Lastly, after determining the self-care of the older persons, the study investigates the relationship between these two questionnaires through correlational analysis. RESEARCH DESIGN A quantitative, descriptive, correlational and contextual design was used in this study to .reach the overarching aim and respective objectives. RESEARCH METHOD The researcher firstly conducted a literature review to understand self-care and related constructs. Thereafter the researcher employed two structured questionnaires, the ASA-A and ESCA, were employed to collect data. The questionnaires were developed to measure self-care (self-care is determined by measuring the self-care agency). These questionnaires were based on Dorothea OrenYs self-care deficit theory of nursing, the same theory that this research study is based on. Minor adaptations were made to both the questionnaires prior to administration to the predominantly Setswana-speaking older population. The study formed part of the larger Multinational Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological study (PURE-SA study - ethical approval number 04M10). All the older persons identified in the peri-urban population of the PURE-SA study living in the Potchefstroom district and who were willing to participate were included in the sample. Trained fieldworkers assisted the researcher in data collection. Of the 198 older persons, 192 participated, accumulating to a 98% response rate. Lastly the researcher correlated the ASA-A and ESCA to determine their relationship as an added benefit to this research study. RESULTS The findings indicate that although the studied older population was of a lower socio-economic status with a lower literacy level, their overall self-care was relatively good. Seven self-care deficits were identified namely time management skills affecting self-care, energy deficit affecting self-care, sleep deprivation, lack of knowledge and ability to acquire knowledge with regard to health and self-care, lack of a rest, exercise and self-care programme, self-care deficit caused by physical deterioration and, lastly, the lack of performance of activities to prevent/decrease self-care deficits. These identified self-care deficits supported the development of guidelines to facilitate self-care amongst older persons, together with Menon's psychological health empowerment model, as well as an in-depth literature review on self-care and related constructs to understand self-care from a theoretical perspective. Furthermore, the study compared the ASA-A and ESCA questionnaires to determine the relationship between these questionnaires. The two questionnaires had a very good correlation with each other, conclusion that either of these two questionnaires could be used to measure self-care of a population. / Thesis (M.Cur.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Relay settings for frequency derivative protection against islanding : Optimizing RoCoF-Hysteresis and Delay for the Swedish power grid: An investigation of relevant values / Reläinställningar för frekvensderivataskydd mot ödrift : Optimering av RoCoF-Hysteres och Fördröjning för det svenska elnätet: En undersökning för relevanta värden

Safari, Ahmad January 2023 (has links)
This report addresses the parameter settings for a protective relay designed to safeguard a 15 kW wind turbine located in Rimbo, Norrtälje municipality, against unintentional islanding. This type of situation arises when distributed energy resources continue to supply local loads, even if the main grid has been unintentionally disconnected. The previous protection system experienced malfunctions and has been replaced with a new protective relay to ensure reliable protection. The new protective relay introduces two parameters (relay settings) associated with unintentional islanding protection function, namely RoCoF (rate of change of frequency) hysteresis, and delay, which were not defined in the previous protective relay. This report aims to determine suitable relay settings and verify that the relay operates as intended, taking into account both local and national requirements for connected generators. When these requirements did not specify or recommend a specific value, reference was made to practices in neighbouring countries, and consideration was given to the generator owner's benefit. Testing the relay with the chosen settings was crucial to ensure a correct understanding and accurate input of the settings. The testing was conducted in a laboratory environment with carefully defined signals of controlled frequency and voltage, while the relay's trip output was logged. The report includes information about the current settings along with a theoretical background to explain their functionality. It also presents test results and the provided information on parameter configurations. Additionally, recommended settings for RoCoF hysteresis and implementation delay are suggested, aiming to enhance protection against inadvertent operation. The results confirmed that the relay can be used in Rimbo, Norrtälje municipality, according to the parameters described in the report.

Subjektivní vymezování životních cílů u žáků s poruchami chování / Subjektive Defining of Life Goals of Pupils with Behavioural Disturbances

Chaloupka, Jan January 2011 (has links)
Subjective Defining of Life Goals of Pupils with Behavioural Disturbances Author: Jan Chaloupka Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague - Department of Special Education Supervisor: Mgr. Jana Mottlová Based on studying literature on general pedagogy, special pedagogy and psychology as well as on the author's personal experience with working with pupils with behavioural disturbances, the author proposes a hypothesis, according to which the long-term goal seeking efforts of the majority of pupils concerning socialization and education are absent, distorted and ineffective. The objective of this paper is to confirm or refute the validity of the hypothesis as well as to theoretically formulate impulses for practice. The research was performed on a sample of 120 respondents and a contrastive control group of 30 grammar school students. It was effectuated by means of a questionnaire and complemented by interviews, which are not included in full form for space reasons. The research has shown that in a heterogeneous group of respondents, a majority of two thirds is either incapable of life goals definition or the definition is rather inadequate and unrealistic. The author, however, has identified the reasons for this neither in the faulty family or educational background nor in decreased...

Determinants of the introduction, naturalisation, and spread of Trifolium species in New Zealand

Gravuer, Kelly January 2004 (has links)
Two conceptual approaches which offer promise for improved understanding of biological invasions are conceptualizing the invasion process as a series of distinct stages and explicitly incorporating human actions into analyses. This study explores the utility of these approaches for understanding the invasion of Trifolium (true clover) species in New Zealand. From the published literature, I collected a range of Trifolium species attributes, including aspects of global transport and use by humans, opportunistic association with humans in New Zealand, native range attributes, habitat characteristics, and biological traits. I also searched historical records to estimate the extent to which each species had been planted in New Zealand, a search facilitated by the enormous importance of Trifolium in New Zealand's pastoral agriculture system. Regression analysis and structural equation modelling were then used to relate these variables to success at each invasion stage. Fifty-four of the 228 species in the genus Trifolium were intentionally introduced to New Zealand. Species introduced for commercial agriculture were characterised by a large number of economic uses and presence in Britain, while species introduced for horticulture or experimental agriculture were characterised by a large native range area. Nine of these 54 intentionally introduced species subsequently naturalised in New Zealand. The species that successfully naturalised were those that had been planted extensively by humans and that were well-matched to the New Zealand climate. A further 16 species (from the pool of 174 species that were never intentionally introduced) arrived and naturalised in New Zealand without any recorded intentional aid of humans. Several attributes appeared to assist species in unintentional introduction-naturalisation, including a good match to the New Zealand climate, a large native range area, presence in human-influenced habitats, a widespread distribution in Britain, and self-pollination capability. The 25 total naturalised species varied greatly in their current distributions and in the rates at which they had spread to achieve those distributions. Species that had spread quickly and are currently more widespread had been frequent contaminants in the pasture seed supply and have a long flowering period in New Zealand. Other biological traits and native range attributes played supporting roles in the spread process. Attributes facilitating success clearly varied among invasion stages. Humans played a dominant role at all stages of this invasion, although biological traits had increasing importance as a species moved through the invasion sequence. My findings suggest that incorporation of human actions and the stage-based framework provide valuable insight into the invasion process. I discuss potential avenues by which these approaches might be integrated into predictive invasion models.

ATTIVITA' DI PROTEZIONE CIVILE E RESPONSABILITA' PENALE

FIORELLI, ALESSANDRA 23 June 2015 (has links)
The interest in realizing an in-depth analysis of the criminal responsibilities related to the failure of the activities of civil defence arises from the increase in criminal proceedings against workers of the Civil Defence. Given the phenomenon of versatility of the elements of crime risen from the social need for safety, the main purpose of the investigation is the identification of the conditions of statement of responsibility. The investigation is divided in two thematic areas intended to remodel the legislation of Civil Defence and describe the criteria of statement of responsibility. As a joining link, the risk, cross element of the whole analysis, is both the subject of the activities of civil defence and a factor of distorsion of the elements of crime and expression of the necessity to distinguish the perspectival view of the management of risk from that of judgement on the failure of previsional activity. The proposed solutions, placed in the legal reality of the criminal procedure of Aquila earthquake, have a perfect balance between the opposite values of safety and freedom, in order to grant a legal protection which cannot be excluded and must be placed within the borders of the guarantees of the criminal procedure.

New Country, New(s) Habits: How does migration affect news consumption and avoidance behavior? : A case study on young millennial immigrants living in Stockholm, Sweden

Adolph, Jasmin January 2022 (has links)
This audience study explores the changes of news consumption and avoidance behaviour by young millennial immigrants from various backgrounds, living in Stockholm, Sweden. Considering various theoretical frameworks, such as the intentional vs. unintentional model (Skovsgaard & Andersen, 2020), the migration change model (Tabor & Milfont, 2011), as well as a combination of a phenomenology of news model (Bengtsson & Johansson, 2021) and media repertoires established by Swart et al. (2017), a qualitative research has been conducted consisting of eight semi-structured interviews. Through a thematic analysis possible patterns have been established and findings show that individuals tend to change their behaviour in news consumption for various reasons. (1) Participants want to be able to establish their own news-routines and use their migration as an opportunity for a new start, (2) there is a certain influence by people closest to them and with their social circle changing, their (news) interests change as well, and (3) motivation and interest play an important role in shaping new consumption behaviours in a new country: the more one is interested in learning more about the new country, its culture and its language, the more likely they are to check that country’s traditional news media sources.

Lastkapacitet hos murar byggda med C3Cblocksystem® : Påkörningslaster och oavsiktlig stöt / Load Capacity of Walls Built with C3Cblocksystem® : Collision Loads and Unintentional Impact

Cederqvist, Wilma, Linhatte, Cecilia January 2021 (has links)
Due to an increasing number of acts of terror where vehicles are used as a form of weapon a need to protect pedestrians has arisen. In this study the load capacity of interlocking concrete blocks with a rectangular cross section was examined based on various deformations and collapses. The concrete blocks could be used as protection against collisions such as terrorist attacks with vehicles as well as a barrier between work zones and close by traffic. The purpose of the study was to determine the load capacity in the event of a collision with a car, truck or forklift for different types of walls as well as for single blocks. The concrete blocks in the walls have both been built as Lego as well as stacked parallel on top of each other. The work is based on calculations. The results have been checked against existing documents from C3C Engineering AB. Using MathCad and Excel a document for calculations has been designed. The result from the calculations shows that walls will slide when a load acts at a low height in relation to the ground. The wall will overturn when the load acts at a higher distance from the ground.
