Tertiary entry level English language proficiency: a case study.

Dunworth, Catherine M. January 2001 (has links)
This study was initiated as a result of the appearance of a number of articles and commentaries in the academic press which intimate that the English language levels of many overseas students studying in Australia are not sufficient to meet the demands of their academic programs. A preliminary investigation into the standards set by one university revealed that there was no statement, policy or, public document describing an appropriate level of language use; and that the university concerned defined language proficiency entirely in terms of bands, scores or grades provided by external testing organisations.Commencing with the assumption that there is an entry level of English language competence, below which students have little chance of success in their studies (at least, within the accepted timeframe), this qualitative case study into one tertiary institution utilises a number of data collection strategies in order to develop a description or definition of a 'gatekeeper' level of English competence. It then compares the findings with the criteria for assessment and grading used by the two most widely available English language tests, TOEFL and IELTS.The first chapter introduces the background to the study. The second chapter outlines the underlying philosophical, social and linguistic framework within which the study was devised, in the context of the literature which informed it. The following chapter presents a justification for the selected research methods and data collection strategies. In the fourth and fifth chapters, the results demonstrate that interpretations of tertiary entry-level language proficiency vary, leading to confusion and an absence of strategic direction; it is further suggested that an appropriate level of language proficiency for tertiary entry cannot be defined without taking into account the prevailing social, political and educational ++ / environment. Recommendations are put forward for the development of an institutional-level framework in which it might be possible to make judgements about the desired levels of language proficiency and improve on existing procedures for their evaluation. This study aims to bring together a number of different strands of research into language and tertiary education such as definitions of language proficiency, language testing and literacy issues, and demonstrate their interconnectivity. As a result, it presents a broad overview (within the overarching discipline) rather than focusing on a single area in depth. Although as a site case study this research does not claim generalisability, it is hoped that- its findings might be useful for other institutions as a basis for their own research.

Resilience In University Entrance Examination Applicants: The Role Of Learned Resourcefulness, Perceived Social Support, And Gender

Dayioglu, Burcu 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study is to examine the differences in resilience scores of university entrance examination (UEE) applicants in terms of entrance time, graduation area, and school type variables, and to investigate the role of learned resourcefulness, perceived social support, and gender in predicting resilience scores of UEE applicants in the 2007-2008 academic year. The sample of the study consisted of 865 (505 females and 360 males) volunteered UEE applicants enrolled in twelve different private courses located in Ankara and three different private courses located in Bursa. Achievement-Related Negative Life Events Subscale of Life Events Inventory for University Students (Gen&ccedil / &ouml / z &amp / Din&ccedil / , 2006 / Oral, 1999) was employed as a screening measure. Furthermore, a demographic data form developed by the researcher, Rosenbaum&rsquo / s Self-Control Schedule (Rosenbaum, 1980a / Siva, 1991), The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Eker &amp / Arkar, 1995 / Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, &amp / Farley, 1988), and Harter&rsquo / s Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (Harter, 1988 / Sahin &amp / Berkem-G&uuml / ven&ccedil / , 1996) were used to collect data. One-way analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The results of one-way analysis of variance indicated that the groups of entrance time to university entrance examination (entering the exam for the first time, second time, or third time), graduation area (equally weighted, quantitative, or social sciences), and school type (General High School, Anatolian High School, Private High School, or Vocational High School) were not significantly different with respect to their resilience scores. On the other hand, the results of multiple regression analysis revealed that all the predictor variables (learned resourcefulness, perceived social support, and gender) were significant predictors which explained 19 % of the total variance in resilience scores. The study found that participants who reported high levels of learned resourcefulness, and perceived social support had higher resilience scores. In addition, being male was found to be associated with higher resilience scores.

Factors contributing towards poor performance of grade 12 learners at Manoshi and Mokwatedi High Schools.

Rammala, Mokgaetsi Salome January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev) --University of Limpopo, 2009. / The purpose of this study was to investigate factors contributing towards the poor performance of Grade 12 learners at two selected high schools, which fall within low quintiles in Limpopo Province. Specifically, the study focused on low Grade 12 outputs in relation to access to university. Due to the exploratory nature of the study and the holistic approach that was undertaken both the home and school environments were targeted as points of investigation. Multiple methods of data collection were used. First, data were collected through individual interviews with learners, educators, principals, and parents. Second, an observation method was used to collect data, such as, time management by learners, their behavioral patterns inside and outside the classroom and in the schoolyard. Finally, document analysis was used to analyse the attendance and performance of learners on attendance registers, quarterly and half yearly schedules, and mark sheets. Key findings of this research suggest that the home environment of learners is not educationally supportive due to poverty, which includes factors such as parents’ low-level of education, high unemployment rate, child-headed families, unpredictable home environment, emotional problems and issues relating to gender roles. In the school environment, the study showed the following causative factors: lack of facilities, unavailable learner support materials, lack of discipline, English as a medium of instruction, heavy workload due to rationalisation and redeployment of educators, and confusion with regard to the application of the new curriculum (National Curriculum Statement). As a result, the study concluded that both home and school environment factors collaborate in producing poor Grade 12 results in the schools. Recommendations are made for attention to be given to these factors by all educational stakeholders. Directions are suggested for future research on poor performance and university access. / Not listed

The Role Of Self-efficacy, Hope, And Anxiety In Predicting University Entrance Examination Scores Of Eleventh Grade Students

Kemer, Gulsah 01 August 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the role of student self-efficacy, academic self-efficacy, state and dispositional hope, and state and trait anxiety in predicting university entrance examination (UEE) scores of students. The participants of the study consisted of 786 (442 males, 344 females) volunteered students who were in the course of preparation preparing for the university entrance examination at &Ccedil / ati, Final, Karacan, Odak, Sinav, and Zafer Private Courses in Ankara. The data were gathered by administering six instruments, namely College Academic Self-efficacy Scale (CASES), College Student Self-efficacy Scale (CSSES), State Hope Scale (SHS), Dispositional Hope Scale (DHS), State Anxiety Inventory (SAI), and Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI). The results of three separate regression analyses revealed different models for the quantitative, equally weighted, and language samples. For the quantitative sample, Anatolian High School-type, Super Lycee school-type, Learning Self-efficacy subscale scores of CSSES, Private High School, Academic Self-efficacy subscale scores of CASES, State Anxiety Inventory scores, Career Planning subscale scores of CSSES, Characteristics of a Good Citizen subscale scores of CASES, Agentic Thinking subscale scores of SHS, and Income level of the family predicted the university entrance examination scores. For the equally weighted sample, the predictor variables entered into the regression equation were Anatolian High School-type, Super Lycee school-type, Academic Self-efficacy subscale scores of CASES, Academic Helping Efficacy subscale scores of CASES, Quantitative Self-efficacy subscale scores of CASES, Pathways subscale scores of DHS, and Agency subscale scores of SHS. For the language sample, Communication Efficacy subscale scores of CSSES, Super Lycee, Anatolian High School, Private High School, Agentic Thinking subscale scores of SHS, Career Planning Self-efficacy subscale scores of CSSES, and Social Self-efficacy subscale scores of CASES were found as the predictor variables entered into the regression equation.

Orientador: Matilde Virginia Ricardi Scaramucci / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-08T02:44:45Z (GMT). The objective of this thesis is to investigate if the English test of the University Entrance Examination of UFPR sets off the washback effect in the teaching/learning of the language in public and private high schools as well as cramming courses and, if so, what effects were they. In order to meet these objectives a qualitative interpretativist investigation was conducted in which various voices of the school community were heard such as the participants of public schools (urban and rural), the private schools and the cramming courses (private and free ones). Since there was an intention of having a multiperspective of the phenomenon, the scenarios were chosen because of the great social inequalities of this country and, therefore, many stakeholders (participants who were directly or indirectly involved in the phenomenon) were selected to be interviewed. The data was triangulated, analyzed and discussed. Besides the interview, class observations were included. The results of this study show that there was no washback effect of the English test of the University Entrance Examination of UFPR in public schools. What helped set the teaching goals of the discipline were the contents suggested in the didactic books adopted in each school. In the other scenarios, the washback effect was observed. The positive effects were the motivation of the directors and teachers to search for information about the test; motivation of the students to study harder to pass the test; the test was used to set clear teaching objectives and reading began to be taught. The negative effects were: anxiety of the participants of some scenarios and curriculum narrowing. Different intensities of the washback effect were observed because there were other factors which interfered in the phenomenon such as information teachers had about the test, their concept of language, reading and evaluation, their knowledge of the English language, the directors demanding for the teachers¿ best, the social group (parents and students) demanding for the teachers¿ best and the chances the students had in being approved, among others. The official program of the test was used to guide the teaching/learning of these scenarios. This study offers a theoretical contribution when it helps us understand a bit more about the washback effect; methodological contribution due to the research design which is innovative and broad and, finally, a practical contribution because it intends to offer a set of information which can give support to the teaching and evaluation of the English discipline in high schools / Doutorado / Lingua Estrangeira / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Unpacking the Washback Effect of University Entrance Exams : A Qualitative Study of Uzbekistan’s Students’ Exam Preparation Experiences

Hotamova, Zarnigor January 2024 (has links)
The evolving nature of education emphasizes the importance of fostering 21st-century skills. To align with the requirements of the contemporary era, Uzbekistan introduced its new competency based National Curriculum, highlighting the development of 21st century skills. Despite the National Curriculum's emphasis on contemporary skills, a gap persists due to the exam-focused education system in Uzbekistan, with university entrance exams largely dictating classroom practices. This qualitative study, through students’ lenses and experiences, aims to explore how preparation for these exams, particularly in English, aligns with the goals of National Curriculum. Washback, defined as the influence of tests on teaching and learning, has been utilized as the study’s conceptual framework. Reflexive thematic analysis has been employed as the method for data analysis. The participants include first-year public university students in Uzbekistan. The findings revealed a multifaceted, complex and context-specific nature of washback. Key observations include a negative washback effect of high stakes public university entrance exams, leading to the prioritization of exam subjects at the expense of holistic education, a misalignment between English instruction and the curriculum, high-stakes entrance exam induced stress, and broader educational context factors, such as lack of teacher qualification and competence, low teacher salary, contributing to poor quality education. The study also highlights the crucial role of private tutoring in preparing for higher education and the emergence of unethical practices in schools. While the exams fostered certain 21st-century skills in students, an overemphasis on rote memorization limits deeper cognitive competencies. Positive washback is observed in lyceum education and among students preparing for the IELTS exam - an alternative pathway to fulfill the English language requirement for public HE, advocating for measurement-driven instruction and comprehensive language skill development. The study concludes that positive changes in Uzbekistan’s public university admission system could be achieved through a more holistic assessment of students’ skills and competencies and measurement-driven approach to education. The study recommends incorporating students' school performance as an admission criterion, offering a more comprehensive assessment of their abilities and knowledge.

A relação entre o desempenho no vestibular e o rendimento acadêmico no ensino superior: um estudo em uma universidade pública paulista / The relationship between the performance in the university entrance exam and academic achievement in higher education: a study in a public university of the state of São Paulo

Baccaro, Thais Accioly 26 May 2014 (has links)
Brazil has experienced, in the past decades, an exponential growth in higher education, with increasing number of institutions, courses, vacancies and enrollment. However, even with such an expansion, college access is still restricted to a few, especially in public universities. Universities use selection processes for entrance in order to choose the most suitable candidates, so thus the chances of success in higher education increase. In this sense, this work was to examine the relationship between performance in the university entrance exam and academic achievement of students of a public university; the performance in the entrance exam was measured by the final score of the student for entrance into the university and academic achievement, the overall average of students who finish the course in their selected careers. This goal was achieved by means of a quantitative study using data from 6055 entering students in 2005, 2006 and 2007, in 12 career areas of Exact and Technological Sciences, Biological Sciences and Humanities. Initial data showed that the average age of entering students is 20 years, most of which were men (64.3%), single (96.5%), with family income up to $ 3,000.00 (59.3%), whose parents, mostly, went to higher education, and elementary and secondary education attended in private schools. From the total students entering the period of analysis, 4237 had university course until the time of data analysis; so, using the data of the graduating students, 4 regression models, one general model and one for each career area were prepared, that is, Exact and Technological Sciences, Biological Sciences and Humanities. It was concluded that the performance in the entrance exam is positively related to academic performance, regardless of career field, that is, better performance in the entrance exam is associated with better academic performance in college. In addition, gender, color, quantity of goods, the type of middle and high school attended by the student, the amount of entrance exams and the cutoff for entrance into careers help explain the academic performance of the graduates from the searched university.

Crise e transformação : um estudo sobre a experiência de alunos de baixa renda num cursinho popular / Crisis and transformation : the experience of working class students in a popular preparatory course for university entrance.

Saffiotti, Allan 25 April 2008 (has links)
The objective of the present study is to identify and discuss psychosocial crisis and transformations that students undergo in a popular preparatory course for university entrance (PPC) in São Paulo, Brazil. These juveniles come from working class families whose histories are remarkable for constant political suffering, experienced as social humiliation and exclusion from public places. These PPC are non-governmental organizations, whose mission is to help working class juveniles enter public universities. A juvenile\'s trajectory over a PPC presents a very rich psychosocial experience and the approach of this experience and the transformations derived from constituted the core question in the present study: how do these subjects recall and signify such experience? How has this experienced impacted on these interviewees\' perceptions over themselves, their social place, and their relationship with knowledge? The available researches in Brazil usually focus on the pedagogical and efficacy of such preparatory courses. Therefore, we were willing to investigate these students\' memories. The methodological approaches of the present study comprised the researcher\'s autobiography reconstruction and in-depth interviews with three former students from a PPC. The purpose of autobiography reconstruction was to explore potential phenomena for investigation. It must be highlighted that the narrative work may produce and benefit from some critical distance between the researcher and himself/the subject, the researcher and his memories from the PPC. The interviews were supported by previous guidelines and sought to stimulate as much as possible the interviewees\' free discourse regarding episodes of practices in the PPC. The analysis was guided by reports on the subjects\' experiences at the PPC and other moments of their histories that helped understand the meaning of the experiences selected for the present study. The memories have revealed the preparatory course as a living place, full of meaningful experiences far beyond its formal proposal, and very often associated with the experience of equality. The attitude of teachers and course staff was reported as crucial to promote transformations in the relationship these students had with formal study, written culture, the world and other people. An intersubjective and favorable field, a community of destiny, moves desire and student work, as well as it supports success. When sheltered by institutions (such as the PPC or a high quality public school), these field and community seem especially valued by working class students, distinguished by forms of social loneliness. The experience of community was the basis for a relationship with knowledge that is not oriented by humiliation or instrumental necessity, but rather as a possibility to fulfill the world and overcome these experiences of humiliation.

Oliveira, Ana Paula Gomes de 30 March 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-12-23T14:01:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Paula Gomes de Oliveira.pdf: 6984550 bytes, checksum: e435a617d938b66cca8164d6a5c43cc3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-30 / The objective is to investigate the concepts of language, text, writing and subject which have been underlying the writing exams used in the entrance examinations (" vestibular ) for Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo UFES. In order to do so, the research pursues the answers to the following questions: a) Which concepts of language, text, writing and subject which have been underlying the writing exams for the entrance examinations for UFES? b) Do the concepts which have been underlying the writing exams for the entrance examinations for UFES dialog with the theoretical tendencies which pervade the production of knowledge in the linguistics and education fields and that have been present in the official syllabi for mother tongue teaching for Elementary and High schools? c) Do the assessment criteria used by the board of correctors reflect such tendencies? Theoretically, this investigation anchors itself, mostly, to the contributions of Bakhtin (2003, 2006) and other authors such as Marcuschi (2007, 2008), Geraldi (1996, 1997, 2003, 2006), Travaglia (1991,1996), Koch (2003) e Koch e Elias (2006), which approach different dimensions of language, writing, subject and text. The methodology employed is the documental analysis, using as a corpus the exams for the entrance examinations for UFES in the period between 2000 and 2010. The exam analyses reveal that the views on the writing exam, concerning the studied period, have shown changes which cover a moment in which the exam privileged eminently school writing practices, supported by a conception of language as a representation of thought, and writing as a way of expressing thought, to another moment in which there was an approaching between the textual genres and the social practices of the subject, in an exam model based upon the use of language in interactional conditions. The criteria present in the correction grid of the writing exams for UFES also express the language conceptions adopted along those periods, fact which corroborates the results accomplished through the analyses of the exams proposed by the university / O objetivo é investigar as concepções de linguagem, de texto, de escrita e de sujeito que vêm fundamentando as provas de redação aplicadas nos vestibulares da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo UFES.
