Unmasking the Enlightenment : Rousseau’s critique of intellectualismJackanich, Paul 08 1900 (has links)
Rousseau’s Discours sur les sciences et les arts predicts the rise of the public intellectual, and along with him, intellectual trends and scientism. It is therefore a treasure to anyone who has wondered about the cults of “authenticity” and “openness,” or slogans like “believe science.” To be more precise, his goal in the Discours is to expose the philosophes of the Enlightenment as hypocrites who laud the advancement of the sciences only to “distinguish” themselves and win power. In this way, the Discours parallels the City of God, where St. Augustine argues that self-love [amor sui] leads to the will to power [libido dominandi]. Rousseau’s Discours is unique however, since he considers the philosophes to be unconscious hypocrites. That is, he does not believe that they treat philosophy and science as “fashions” in order to directly acquire power, but rather because they are over-socialized. In this thesis, I will argue that Rousseau develops a unique method in the Discours for exposing the over-socialized hypocrite: unmasking. Although previous authors such as Molière, La Bruyère and Montaigne often invoked the rhetoric of the mask, I will show that Rousseau is the first to transform this rhetorical device into a method of social theory proper. Ultimately, when Claude Lévi-Strauss argues that Rousseau is the “founder of the sciences of man,” it is this method that he is describing. Of course, Rousseau could not have intended for this method, which sought to expose how institutions socialize people, to itself be institutionalized within the academies.

Theme utilization in pedagogical practice. /Diploma thesis/ Prague 2014 - Charles University, Faculty of Education, department of art education,83 p. Diploma thesis is oriented as a theoretical study and research of mask in prezent form with context of history. In this work mask is understanded as a communication between whole world and one person, when the individuality of person meets uniformity of mass. It deals with phenomenom of masking as a everyday manifestation human being identify with social group with specific culture tradition. Mask contemplates between ritual and fun, by probe of traditions, ceremonials, rituals and carnivals, but also probe of contemporary theatre or art . Diploma thesis also thinks about present position of ritual. Goal of the work is specify everyday human being, his mask, face, facial expression, at the modern world. Pedagogical utilization offers implementation theme to space of nursery school and grammar school offer of topics, mostly realized and reflected. Part of work is together finding theme at preparation and realization gallery education for two exhibitions in Rudolfinum Gallery.

Dumay, Raquel 26 January 2012 (has links)
We are interested in the context of this Phd thesis to the variables that can facilitate or inhibit the expression of counter-normative beliefs working in the field of social representation of immigrants. We study more precisely the impact of normative protection given to this social group, the perceived ability to adapt to their host society they are assigned but also the academic affiliation of respondents on the socio-cognitive strategies of masking and unmasking set place in the expression of representation. It is expected that these three factors interact with the answering instruction, mitigating or even cancelling in some cases the differences typically observed between conditions where subjects respond in their own name (masking hypothesis) and those where they express an opinion on behalf of a substitute other (unmasking hypothesis). The results of empirical research show as expected differential effects of the answering instruction under the terms of the factors tested, confirming the involvement of a normative process in the effects of substitution. Moreover, the observed associations between normative protection granted to immigrants and their perceived adaptability confirm the existence of justification and legitimation processes that seem to govern the orchestration of the phenomena of masking and unmasking in the expression of social representation about minority groups.

Validating Machine and Human Decision-Making in Forensic Fire Debris AnalysisWhitehead, Frances A 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This work presents a background on the chemical complexity of fire debris analysis, including an ever-present matrix of pyrolysis products as the catalyst that led to the creation of the National Center for Forensic Science's Fire Debris Database. A selection of these 1,000+ casework-relevant ground truth samples was used to create two newly proposed analyst workflows to connect the current method of categorical reporting with evaluative reporting practices reflective of the strength of the evidence. Both workflows use linear sequential unmasking to help mitigate bias, a discrete scoring system for quantification of the analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to bridge together categorical and probabilistic reporting by indicating the optimum decision threshold the analysts are operating from when they make a decision. Both workflows also allow a machine-learning component to be included in evaluating the evidence and are practical methods for obtaining validated performances for human and machine decisions. The second workflow includes subjective logic, which provides a means of determining the uncertainty inherent to the opinion made by the analyst and the machine learning computational model. ‘Fuzzy categories' and an opinion triangle connect the opinion offered by the analyst given their perceived uncertainty to the ROC curve so a categorical decision can be made. For each workflow, three analysts independently assessed 20 randomly chosen samples from the Fire Debris Database and followed the ASTM E1618-19 standard fire debris analysis method. The resultant area under the ROC curve for each analyst for each workflow was 0.90 or higher, indicating that all were in the very good to excellent range for diagnostic classifiers, as was the machine learning model tested in the second workflow. Recommendations for implementing a performance validation workflow, how repetitive engagement can help the individual analyst and insights on using these for performance validation and training purposes are also included.
