La fabrique du document carte : vers une méthode d'analyse d'une représentation de territoires / The making of map document : to a method of analyzing a representation territories

En se fondant sur une enquête documentographique, issue de plusieurs méthodes de commentaire de documents, notamment en géographie, en histoire, en analyse des spectacles, cette thèse vise à explorer les capacités informatives de la carte, objet de contemplation et de fascination, mais aussi de visualisation de territoires. La carte est, en effet, une re-présentation, c'est-à-dire une " mise sous les yeux " iconique d'informations spatialisées, qui bénéficie d'un langage visuel et textuel efficace. L'objectif de cette enquête sur l'élaboration, la production et les usages des cartes, est de définir, du point de vue des Sciences de l'Information et de la Communication, et dans la continuité des travaux de Jean Meyriat, le document carte, et de préciser ce qui relève de ses fabriques infocommunicationnelles, celle par l'intention de son auteur, et celle à réception. La carte est construite et élaborée pour assumer une ou des fonctions, définies par celui qui la fabrique. Mais elle peut être exploitée et interrogée par des utilisateurs, dans d'autres contextes de réception que celui prévu par l'auteur. La carte remplit alors d'autres fonctions et se révèle kaléidoscopique : chacune de ses utilisations crée une autre image, chaque utilisateur fabrique un nouveau document. A travers cette exploitation de la carte, réalisée à partir d'un échantillon du fonds cartographique de l'Université Toulouse-Jean Jaurès, nous contribuons ainsi, au sein de l'équipe MICS, Médiations en Information-Communication Spécialisées du Laboratoire d'Études et de Recherches Appliquées en Sciences Sociales, LERASS, à l'élaboration collective du concept de document dans ses formes diverses. / Based on a documentographic investigation, following several methods comment of documents, including geography, history, analysis shows, this thesis aims to explore the informative capacity of the map, an object of contemplation and fascination, but also territories visualization. The map is, in fact, a re-presentation, that is to say, an iconic "deposit under the eyes" of spatial information, which has a visual and textual language effectively. The objective of this investigation on the development, production and uses of maps, is to define, in terms of Information and Communication Sciences, and continuity in the work of Jean Meyriat, the document map, and clarify what comes under its infocommunicationals factories, one by the intention of its author, and one upon receipt. The map is built and developed to assume one or more functions defined by the person who makes. But it can be exploited and interrogated by users, in other receptions contexts than that provided by the author. The map then performs other functions and proves kaleidoscopic: each of its use creates another image, each user makes a new document. Through this exploitation of the map, made from a sample of cartographic funds of University of Toulouse - Jean Jaurès, we contribute, within MICS team, Mediations in Specialized Information-Communication Studies, of Laboratory and Applied Research in Social Sciences, LERASS, of the collective concept development document in its various forms.

Last summer, when I began thinking about my thesis, I tried to look back on my earlier work with a more critical eye. I noticed that my focus had largely been on trying to find my own idiom, and improving my construction skills. In the middle of my education I discovered the freedom in draping, and I challenged myself by putting the pen aside and instead make three-dimensional sketches. Looking back, I believe that I succeeded in producing the organic expression I had envisioned. I had still to explore materials more deeply, though, and therefore I made a summer course with exclusive focus on materials. These were the first steps towards beginning my thesis. There were a lot of things I wanted to explore in my thesis, and many techniques I wanted to try. I wanted to believe in myself and my strong sides, but also dare to explore completely new things and go one step further than before, without fear- ing failure. Being very comfortable with construction and cutting, I can quickly try my ideas to see if they work out or not. My sketching is uncontrolled, coarse and pretty abstract, it is through sketching my ideas evolve. I am fast when I make my sketches, be it by pen or three-dimensionally, but I work much more slowly towards the end when it’s time to work on the details, where I am meticulous.

The thesis focuses on the ambiguity in teaching historical topics at ISCED 1 level of education, portraying a teaching method aimed at developing pupils' ability to perceive and reflect upon the ambiguity in teaching history. This ambiguity is demonstrated on historical events concerning Jan Hus. The objective is to develop a thematic unit on ambiguity of approach to historical facts, then to reflect upon the implementation and to outline suggestions for further work. In the beginning the thesis shows the importance of studying history, the changes to teaching the subject in elementary schools throughout time, the concept of historical thinking, memory and multiperspectivity. The practical part documents and reflects upon a process, that was implemented with groups of elementary school pupils. Than analyszs and interprets pupils' outputs. The conclusion contains modifications to the unit, suggested in such a way, that they entice the students' capabilities to interpret matter and to form an argument, as well as their historical thinking and their ability to reflect upon the ambiguity of teaching history, as much as possible.

Parental attachment and demonstrated academic mastery

There are numerous ways to measure or estimate parental attachment, from which can be deduced a positive, neutral, or negative relationship between adult child and parent. A standardized measure of parental attachment was administered to participants in this study, in order to determine a rating scale that can be worked with statistically to determine possible connections between the attachment measure and GP A. To that end, this study used the Revised Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, (IPPA-R). The relationship between parent and child has profound effects on an individual throughout their life. Even in adulthood, the attachment of adult children to their parents affects their attitudes and achievement. It is a relationship common to all. Even if the person is orphaned or abandoned, if this relationship between parental attachment and adult achievement can be demonstrated statistically, it may lead the way in learning to focus the positive power of parental attachment into measurable achievement for the adult child. It is hoped that this research may lead to further study about parental attachment and the impact it may have on academic achievement, and perhaps extrapolated to increasing achievement in other areas. The goal of this study was to measure the influence of parental attachment upon the academic achievement of adult children, measured by the Revised Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA-R) developed by Amsden and Greenberg (2009). The IPPAR is a revision to the original Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, first developed by Amsden and Greenberg in 1987. The original version had questions that were directed toward both parents together, such as "My parents respect my feelings ... " (Amsden & Greenberg, 1987). In the IPPA-R, the same question was broken down into questions for both father and mother. The same question in the IPPA-R would be, "My mother respects my feelings ... " and "My father respects my feelings ... " (Amsden & Greenberg, 1987). Participants for this study were recruited from a junior level Psychology class at the University of Central Florida. Extra credit was awarded for participation. A total of 106 students participated in this study. Of the total 106 surveys submitted, 3 surveys were incomplete, thereby reducing the number of participants to 103. Informed consent was provided by participants at the beginning of the survey. Along with the mother and father sections of the IPPA-R, the questionnaire included demographic inquiries, such as race, age and gender. Along with these questions, the request for grade point average (GPA) was included. Academic achievement was measured by GPA at the university level. GPA was recorded on a 1-4 scale, using 2 decimal points. The independent variable in this study was parental attachment with seven levels. GPA served as the dependent measure. Data were analyzed using a one way between subject Analysis of Variance, (ANOV A). GPA did not significantly differ as a function of parental attachment, F(6,97)= 1.758, p=0.116. Previous research using the IPPA-R as a psychometric tool has shown significant effects when parental attachment is compared to psychological well-being (Gullone & Robinson, 2005), as well as other, more diverse variables, such as tendencies toward drug abuse among female teenagers (Renes & Strange, 2009) and commitment to career choices (Ward, 2003). This study made use of the IPPA-R measure, as the above mentioned research did, but the dependent variable of GPA was different than other research using the IPPAR. Most research with the IPPA-R seeks to measure psychological well being, or some aspect of it. The present research differed from previous studies in that this project used academic achievement as the dependent variable. Academic achievement at the university level can be extremely important to life and career directions adult children may choose. Despite the lack of statistical evidence, several interesting issues were raised. These issues, as well as possible directions for future research, are discussed.

Rhetorical strategies of legitimation : the 9/11 Commission's public inquiry process

This research project seeks to explore aspects of the post-reporting phase of the public inquiry process. Central to the public inquiry process is the concept of legitimacy and the idea that a public inquiry provides and opportunity to re-legitimate the credibility of failed public institutions. The current literature asserts that public inquiries re-legitimise through the production of authoritative narratives. As such, most of this scholarship has focused on the production of inquiry reports and, more recently, the reports themselves. However, in an era of accountability, and in the aftermath of such a poignant attack upon society, the production of a report may represent an apogee, but by no means an end, of the re-legitimation process. Appropriately, this thesis examines the post-reporting phase of the 9/11 Commission’s public inquiry process. The 9/11 Commission provides a useful research vehicle due to the bounded, and relatively linear, implementation process of the Commission’s recommendations. In little more than four months a majority of the Commission’s recommendations were passed into law. Within this implementation phase the dominant discursive process took place in the United States Congress. It is the legislative reform debates in the House of Representatives and the Senate that is the focus of this research project. The central research question is: what rhetorical legitimation strategies were employed in the legislative reform debates of the post-reporting phase of the 9/11 Commission’s public inquiry process? This study uses a grounded theory approach to the analysis of the legislative transcripts of the Congressional reform debates. This analysis revealed that proponents employed rhetorical strategies to legitimise a legislative ‘Call to Action’ narrative. Also, they employed rhetorical legitimation strategies that emphasised themes of bipartisanship, hard work and expertise in order to strengthen the standing of the legislation. Opponents of the legislation focused rhetorical de-legitimation strategies on the theme of ‘flawed process’. Finally, nearly all legislators, regardless of their view of the legislation, sought to appropriate the authoritative legitimacy of the Commission, by employing rhetorical strategies that presented their interests and motives as in line with the actions and wishes of the Commission.

Σημαντική παράμετρος αποτέλεσε η εμπιστοσύνη των πελατών στο φαρμακοποιό. Για την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων αναζητήθηκαν στατιστικά σημαντικές συσχετίσεις ανάμεσα στα δημογραφικά στοιχεία, τα καταναλωτικά πρότυπα και τις μεταβλητές ατμόσφαιρα φαρμακείου, εμπιστοσύνη στο φαρμακοποιό και ικανοποίηση από τις φαρμακευτικές υπηρεσίες. / This study is a survey of customers shopping behavior in Greek pharmacies, and their satisfaction from purchases, pharmaceutical services and store atmosphere using a questionnaire among a hundred customers sample. An important factor was trust upon the pharmacist. Conclusions made out of statistically significant correlations among demographics, consumers shopping styles and variables such as satisfaction from pharmaceutical services, trust upon the pharmacist and pharmacies atmosphere.

Electronic workplace surveillance and employee privacy : a comparative analysis of privacy protection in Australia and the United States

More than a century ago in their definitive work “The Right to Privacy” Samuel D. Warren and Louis D. Brandeis highlighted the challenges posed to individual privacy by advancing technology. Today’s workplace is characterised by its reliance on computer technology, particularly the use of email and the Internet to perform critical business functions. Increasingly these and other workplace activities are the focus of monitoring by employers. There is little formal regulation of electronic monitoring in Australian or United States workplaces. Without reasonable limits or controls, this has the potential to adversely affect employees’ privacy rights. Australia has a history of legislating to protect privacy rights, whereas the United States has relied on a combination of constitutional guarantees, federal and state statutes, and the common law. This thesis examines a number of existing and proposed statutory and other workplace privacy laws in Australia and the United States. The analysis demonstrates that existing measures fail to adequately regulate monitoring or provide employees with suitable remedies where unjustifiable intrusions occur. The thesis ultimately supports the view that enacting uniform legislation at the national level provides a more effective and comprehensive solution for both employers and employees. Chapter One provides a general introduction and briefly discusses issues relevant to electronic monitoring in the workplace. Chapter Two contains an overview of privacy law as it relates to electronic monitoring in Australian and United States workplaces. In Chapter Three there is an examination of the complaint process and remedies available to a hypothetical employee (Mary) who is concerned about protecting her privacy rights at work. Chapter Four provides an analysis of the major themes emerging from the research, and also discusses the draft national uniform legislation. Chapter Five details the proposed legislation in the form of the Workplace Surveillance and Monitoring Act, and Chapter Six contains the conclusion.
