Such green areas are marketing tools for real estate speculation and promotion of municipal administration. As a first step, a literature review on the main themes to be approached during the research was performed and then the classical and recent references about the history of urban parks were listed up. Also, the references about contemporaneous cities, city marketing and the linking of these subjects to real estate speculation were submitted to the same process. Subsequently, the urban parks were analyzed in the historical context of Goiania based on authors who have been involved in the study of the occupation and formation processes of the city and also in the real estate dynamics that is presented in the state capital of Goias. To analyze the effectiveness or urban parks as an estate appreciation vectors in Goiania, the value researches were taken, per square meter of projects under construction, which were located near and far to urban parks such as Bosque dos Buritis, Lake of the Roses and Areiao. All the information was assigned by real estate and construction companies. In this stage was possible to conclude that the parks that have more recent consolidation, as Areiao, have a reasonable difference price between the categories analyzed according to the distance. Furthermore, the first park that has been installed in Goiania does not have a significant difference price. This is the case of Bosque dos Buritis, which was the first park between those that have been analyzed. The Lago das Rosas presents a particular aspect that is the marketing which was always linked to the park. So, the projects surrounding this park are highly valued since seventies, particularly those bordering the green area. Finally, the third step of this work was based on the active search for data about the historical appreciation of the surrounding to the parks. These data were analyzed under the concepts of city marketing and real estate speculation of the areas taken as growth vectors known to be the south region of Goiania. It follows that the parks acts as a marketing tool for the surrounding projects appreciation and then overestimating the urban land an also promoting the marketing maneuvers and real estate speculation.

It investigates the nature of these environments through the design optics. It was observed that even being a public space, the urban parks present aggregations and segregations in its uses. In response to this, it is possible to notice that some of this behaviors are detracted, generating interactions and conflicts in the functioning of these environments. Apparently, the current physical distribution of the environment has contributed to this behavior. The hypothesis is that through design strategies, people's interaction can be effectively triggered for the production of citizenship. By this perspective, the aim was to understand the functioning of contemporary urban parks and to identify how the space interfere in social behavior, in order to recover their primary function, which is the use of the environment in a collectively way, but with belonging. The methodology is based on a historical and qualitative approach, through the analysis of parks that present similar morphological structures. The expectation is that these design strategies can direct their 're-operation' in favor of interaction among users.

Parks in public parking : empowering community members to reintegrate nature into the city

Southam, Theresa 16 September 2010 (has links)
This research explores how community leaders could use Corbett’s Spectrum of Environmental Ideologies (2006) to analyze the ideologies of communication campaigns before adopting one into a community. In this research, a mixed age class of elementary students and local artisans created two “parks” in public parking spaces and participated in an arts contest in Nelson, BC. This action research used analytic coding to reflect on participants’ relationship with nature based on their response to: international Park(ing) Day and Transition Nelson. Additionally, participant recommendations for greening Nelson’s downtown core were compared with four models of social change for generating ecocentric solutions. Ecocentric solutions stem from the belief that humans and nature are interdependent. Found to be key were nurturing participants’ nascent ecocentric values and investigating the campaign materials deeply. Additionally building motivation, exploring alternatives, problem-solving, partnerships and improved organizational communication are important elements of social change.

This work fits within the proposed Master Plan Votorantim, and aims to identify, characterize, and assign frame through proposals, significant urban green areas of the city. These were characterized by a physical diagnosis through environmental field trips, maps present in the Secretariat of works pertaining to their subdivisions and public areas, information contained in the Master Plan and georeferenced images. Among the twelve areas, nine can be considered neighborhood parks and only three as neighborhood parks, mainly due to its dimensions. Regarding the state of conservation of the environment is worth highlighting three green areas, while the other studied have a higher degree of intervention, mostly with furniture and spaces waterproofed. Others are in a high degree of degradation, mainly by the accumulation of garbage. The enhancement and protection of green areas should be priorities in any master plan, based on the development of projects that include management programs, requiring detailed planning for these areas do not become problems for the city, eventually being abandoned or illegally occupied.

On the floral rewards and flower-visitor assemblages of annual urban flower meadow seed mixes

Godfrey, Thomas George January 2017 (has links)
Flower seed mixes are increasingly used to enhance the biodiversity and amenity values of urban green spaces. Urban or “pictorial” flower seed mixes are often used because they are designed using cultivars and non-native species to provide more colourful and longer-lasting flower displays. Although these seed mixes are effective in providing a high density of large colourful flowers, over an extended season, their value for biodiversity, and in particular the floral rewards they provide for flower-visitors, is largely unknown. The overall aim of my thesis was to assess and improve the value of these new urban habitats as forage resources for flower-visiting insects. My approach was to quantify and compare floral reward provision and insect visitation between meadows grown from three exemplar commercial pictorial flower meadow seed mixes (called Marmalade Annual, Short Annual and Cornfield Annual). I also compared these standard commercial mixes with corresponding ‘nectar-enriched’ formulations, which were designed by increasing the proportional seed weight contribution of selected species predicted to produce high quantities of nectar within each mix. To compare floral rewards and visitation between meadows grown from these seed mixes, I set up a field experiment in Sheffield, UK, using a complete randomised block design with six replicate blocks, each with six 25 m2 plots sown with one of the six seed mix treatments. My first objective was to quantify the floral nectar and pollen rewards provided by each flowering species recorded in the meadows (on the scale of a single flower or inflorescence). My second objective was to use these data to quantify the floral rewards provided per unit area by replicate meadows of different seed mix treatments, testing whether enrichment of seed mixes is an effective method of increasing floral nectar sugar rewards. My third objective was to corroborate/correct my morphology-based flower-visitor identifications using DNA barcoding to screen for misidentifications and morphologically cryptic species. I then used these DNA barcode-based identifications to assess whether there are systematic biases in the structure of flower-visitor networks constructed using molecular taxon identifications compared to traditional morphology-based taxon identifications. My fourth objective was to quantify patterns of insect visitation to meadows, testing whether meadows of different seed mix types attract different flower-visitor assemblages. Meadow floral composition surveys revealed that contamination by unintended horticultural species was widespread across replicate seed mix treatments, with contaminants likely germinating from a seed bank laid down during a failed attempt at this experiment the previous year. Contamination particularly affected Marmalade mixes, mainly because the common contaminant species were often also components of the Short and Cornfield mixes. For example, contaminants contributed on average about a third of nectar sugar mass or pollen volume per unit area in Marmalade mix meadows. Hence, contamination fundamentally undermined the internal validity of seed mix treatments, reducing the ability to directly attribute meadow level patterns in floral rewards or flower-visitors to seed mixes. As result, examination of patterns of floral resource provision and insect visitation were more informative at a species scale. In terms of patterns of insect visitation, Centaurea cyanus received 91% of bumblebee visits, 88% of honeybee visits and 29% of hoverfly visits, whilst T. inodorum received 27% of hoverfly visits. Patterns of bumblebee and honeybee visitation indicated preferential visitation to floral units of Centaurea cyanus. Although this species produced high quantities of nectar sugar mass and pollen volume, this did not differentiate it from other Asteraceae, such as Glebionis segetum, Rudbeckia hirta and Coreopsis tinctoria, which all produced high quantities of both floral rewards. Hence, it is likely that floral traits not measured in this study, such as nectar accessibility (‘nectar-holder depth’) or concentration/volume characteristics (which can affect accessibility due to constraints imposed by feeding morphology), drove patterns of preferential visitation in bumblebees and honeybees to C. cyanus. Given that in the absence of contamination there would have been very few bumblebee or honeybee visitors to Marmalade mix meadows, aesthetically designed pictorial meadows can fail to jointly provide benefits for people and some important flower-visiting insect taxa. DNA barcoding did not change specimen identifications for most morphotaxa. However, splitting and/or lumping processes affected almost one third of morphotaxa, with lumping of morphotaxa the most common type of change. This was in part because males and females from sexually dimorphic species were often separated by morphological identification. These DNA barcode-based changes to visitor taxonomy resulted in consistent minor changes in network size and structure across replicate networks. Lumping of morphotaxa decreased taxon richness, reducing the number of unique links and interaction diversity (the effective number of links). Lumping also increased flower-visitor generality, reducing plant vulnerability and increasing overall network connectance. However, taxonomic changes had no effect on interaction evenness or network specialisation. Thus, for this well-studied fauna, DNA barcode-based flower-visitor networks were systematically biased toward fewer taxa and links, with more generalist visitors and specialist plants. Given that many tropical faunas have more species and are less described than in Britain this pattern may not be replicated in other studies. Further studies in contrasting plant-pollinator communities are required before generalisations can be made about systematic biases between networks constructed using morphological versus molecular data. Overall, meadows grown from annual pictorial flower meadow seed mixes provide abundant floral units per unit area of meadow and are a valuable alternative to traditional horticultural flower beds or amenity grasslands in high profile urban contexts. Nevertheless, care must be taken during design of seed mixes and selection of mixes for planting to ensure that species in the mix provide suitable floral resources for an array of flower-visitors, including bees. This would be aided by the integration of informative measures for candidate species of floral rewards or visitor types and visitation rates during seed mix design.

It starts with the idea that spatial arrangements have been changed over the years due to changes in habits of society or subtle impositions of the real estate market through advertisements, that contribute to the formation of the urban imagination and the process overvaluation of these enterprises. They were brought to the debate on key concepts such as dwelling, the type and the imaginary, beyond the historical review of the transformations of verticalized buildings and parks analyzed in order to answer the questions proposed in this research. The types of apartments in the vicinity of the first parks in Goiânia were identified and analyzed through the redesign of the plants of the apartments, reading chronicles local authors and comparing these data. The appreciation of these spaces is constantly reinforced by the government and the media, also affecting the production of architectural programs offered to users both in the common areas of buildings as in the apartments. By analyzing the architectural types was possible to note the specific spatial and functional characteristics of each period, changes in the needs programs and advertising materials of the enterprises, as well as reducing the square footage of apartments searched.

ENTREPRENEURIALISM MEETS THE SUSTAINABLE CITY: THE CASE OF LEXINGTON’S TOWN BRANCH COMMONS

Grubbs, Thomas E. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Although the idea of the entrepreneurial city is nothing new, recent research in contemporary urban geography and related disciplines indicates that the modus operandi of such entrepreneurial endeavors has shifted, as a result of an increasing recognition and acceptance of global climate change, to include and even prioritize sustainable urban development discourses and practices. While these discourses purportedly culminate in the production of the “sustainable city,” they often fail to deliver upon their promise to create a greener, more sustainable city for all. Such practices, in an effort to help cities obtain an urban sustainability fix (While et al. 2004), often lead to the selective uptake and implementation of “sustainable” policies and projects by local governments and members of the urban elite in their efforts to positively market their respective cities to potential residents and investors. The city of Lexington, Kentucky’s ongoing efforts to establish a new downtown park system—the Town Branch Commons—along the route of a once buried stream, is representative of how such a sustainability fix is both conceived of and ultimately produced by urban elites in the contemporary neoliberal city.

Parques urbanos de Ribeirão Preto-SP : na produção do espaço, o espetaculo da natureza / Urban parks of Ribierão Preto-SP : in the space's production, the nature's spactable

Gomes, Marcos Antonio Silvestre 09 November 2009 (has links)
Orientador: Arlete Moyses Rodrigues / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Geociencas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T12:27:00Z (GMT). The present work discusses the process of the urban space production by analyzing the meaning of the creation of parks in specific areas on the city. The Parks, as well as the squares and the green areas and of recreation, interfere in the urban space comp lex because of a result of the widest process of space's production and reproduction, based on laws and norms of the Capitalist State. In this study, the parks are discussed as one of the places where the nature's production is materialized, above all beca use after the Conference of the United Nations on Environment and Development, occurred in 1992, the speeches about the "green" were enlarged as a way of promoting life quality. In this process, the public power, when implanting public equipments in specific areas of the city, contributes to the valorization and unequal space appropriation and enlargement of the socio-spatials inequalities, even if the speech regards the cities' common good. Overall, the research presents the understanding of the creation a nd spatial distribution process of public parks with the real estate office incorporation dynamics, speeches and practices about leisure and life quality, demonstrating the complexity of the urban space's appropriation, production, reproduction, repossession in the municipal district of Ribeirão Preto -SP. It starts from a critical approach respecting the space production, searching to understand and to place the parks in the urban problem context, evidencing them as created equipments, among other functions, to the promotion of public administrations and to confer in certain portions of the city a differential value. These equipments interfere in the land price and they induce the expulsion not clear of the ones that cannot pay to live or to continue living in their surroundings. The parks are not neutral spaces which promote life quality, as commonly spoken in speeches, but they interfere in the urban socio-spatial complex with intentions and different meanings in each portion of the city. They are urban equipments implanted as public spaces directed to the leisure and the environmental conservation, but adversely they are characterized by the private appropriation and by the denial (of the conservation) of the nature, because they are implanted, in general, with exotic species. The parks Prefeito Luiz Roberto Jábali and Dr. Luís Carlos Raya, which supported this analysis, are representatives of the space production in Ribeirão Preto, where the public equipments have been implanted in those areas in which the population of larger income lodges and in which is conferred a larger value to the urban land. In that way, they become notables in the city not only for the dimension that they assume as leisure spaces, but also for the location in areas of growing real estate valorization and for the projection imputed by the public power. Settled in degraded areas, as the old mining areas of which the basalt was extracted, these parks constitute "new places" in the city, they impress new marks in the landscape and they reveal the modifications happened in the uses of those areas. The parks integrate a group of strategies (landscaped avenues, boulevards, shopping centers etc.) implanted in the south area of Ribeirão Preto that has contributed to the largest valorization of the properties regarding the other portions of the city. It has been verified that the properties placed near to the parks Prefeito Luiz Roberto Jábali and Dr. Luís Carlos Raya presents higher prices when compared with other real states in the same neighborhood, providing high differential income, confirming that the parks represent a way of real estate valorization and it contributes in the socio-spatial disparities / Doutorado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Doutor em Ciências
