The aim of this thesis is to develop a value assessment method for industrial heritage in Zonguldak, one of the symbolic industrial cities in Turkey where mining has been the leading force since the discovery of hard coal in the mid-19th century. Values to decide what to conserve and why are searched during this process under the light of discussions on industrial heritage and values of the architectural conservation.
Focusing on this aim, this study is structured in four parts as the survey on industrialization and industrial heritage, review and discussion of value types, research on Zonguldak, and implementation of value assessment process for the selected study area with the proposed value types.
To conclude, value assessment process is a vital step in conservation of cultural heritage. For the industrial heritage, a relatively recent concept in the conservation discipline, existing value types need to be re-assessed. This thesis performs an
exemplification of value assessment for industrial heritage over a selected study area in the Zonguldak coalfield and proposes possible decisions under the light of this valuation.

Natural value assessments – can they predict the species richness of red listed and bioindicator fungi in Fennoscandian coniferous forests?Samuelsson, Louise January 2017 (has links)
The thesis aims to examine how well two standardised methods in nature conservation, namely natural value assessment and key biotope inventory, perform in terms of recognising an area with a high amount of red listed and bioindicator fungi. The two methods are compared to see if any method is superior to find areas with high presence of red listed and bioindicator fungi and if a larger area automatically means a larger number of species. A natural value assessment inventory is conducted on study sites with a performed key biotope inventory, with an addition of an inventory on fungi. Statistical tests are completed to give information about occurring correlations. The results display that the key biotope inventory and the natural value assessment do not differ in their evaluations of an area. Analysis also shows that there is no relationship between the forest sites area and the assessment performed by the natural value assessment. However, if the assessment is performed by the key biotope inventory there exist a relationship with the forest sites area. Further on, there is no correlation between the area and its number of species. The tests also indicate that neither of the methods predict presence or the number of red listed and bioindicator species in a forest. Based on the results, the presence of bioindicator and red listed species alone are not good indicators of forest nature value. In order to give more credible answers to these questions, more studies with increased number of replicates should be conducted. / Avhandlingen syftar till att undersöka hur bra två standardmetoder inom naturvården (Skogsbiologernas naturvärdesbedömning och Nyckelbiotopsinventering) är på att upptäcka ett områdes förekomst av rödlistade svampar och signalarter. Metoderna jämförs för att upptäcka om någon metod är överlägsen den andra angående att finna områden med stor förekomst av rödlistade svampar och signalarter samt om ett större område automatiskt innebär fler arter. Detta undersöks genom att Skogsbiologernas naturvärdesbedömning utförs på områden som redan inventerats utifrån en Nyckelbiotopsinventering med tillägg av en svampinventering. Statistiska analyser genomförs därefter för att ge svar om förekommande samband. Analyser visar att Nyckelbiotopsinventeringen och Skogsbiologernas naturvärdesbedömning inte skiljer sig angående bedömningen av skogsområden. Utförda statistiska testerna tyder även på att det inte förekommer något samband mellan bedömda områdens areal och dess bedömning enligt Skogsbiologernas bedömning, däremot finns det ett samband mellan områdenas areal och Nyckelbiotopsinventeringens bedömning. Det förekommer dock inget art-area samband. Utförda tester indikerar även att ingen av metoderna kan förutsäga mängden rödlistade svampar samt signalarter i ett skogsområde. Baserat på detta resultat ger förekomsten av signalarter samt rödlistade svamparter ingen bra indikation på en skogs naturvärde. För att ge mer trovärdiga svar på dessa frågor krävs mer studier med en ökad mängd replikat.

It explores critical issues relating to the valorisation of historic heritage in New Zealand and considers whether existing frameworks for evaluation and assessment are effective and appropriate. The rationale for the research proposes that achievable and effective outcomes for historic heritage only occur in the context of rigorous evaluation and assessment frameworks. Theoretical and pragmatic frames of reference drive key lines of reasoning. The two frames of reference comprise: firstly, theoretical principles relating to the nature and qualities of heritage value and secondly, operational strategies relating to the process of assessment. The thesis integrates current policy and practice within existing epistemology with primary research data using a mixed methodology. A review of international policy and practice contrasts the various approaches used in Australia, Canada, England and the United States of America, and identifies effective system characteristics. Existing understandings and practice within New Zealand are considered and analogies made between particular elements of the primary research drawn from surveys of professional and non-professional opinion of the heritage assessment process. The New Zealand findings are then set against the review of international evidence and the literature to identify significant strengths and shortcomings. It is argued that New Zealand currently lacks suitable frameworks within which appropriate concepts of value and effective strategies for significance assessment are meaningfully integrated. Expressions of the nature and qualities of historic heritage must be reformulated in ways that afford greater recognition to principles of social value and the holistic, multivalent properties of the resource. Moreover, identified deficiencies in matters of community engagement, consistency, resourcing, local authority process and the recognition of indigenous rights, undermine the effectiveness of operational strategies for assessment and require attention.

Cette étude examine si les sites historiques pourraient être considérés comme des biens publics ou non. Il étudie aussi les caractéristiques d'un site d’être considéré comme un bien public mondial. Considérant les sites historiques comme biens publics exige différent type de planification et gestion car ces sites sont généralement gérés par les gouvernements et les gouvernements engagent des coûts élevés pour leur restauration et leur entretien. Par conséquent, il serait important d'évaluer la valeur des différents sites de prioriser la restauration de ces sites. Donc, dans cette recherche différents types de valeurs générées par des sites historiques a été étudié et la méthode la plus appropriée pour évaluer la valeur totale des sites a été proposé. Ensuite, une étude empirique a été réalisée en constituant des données originales pour l'évaluation de la valeur du site du mausolée de Ferdowsi en Iran et la valeur totale du site ainsi que ses sous valeurs a été évaluée. / This study considers whether historic sites could be considered as public goods or not. It also studies the characteristics of a site to be considered as a global public good. Considering historic sites as public goods demands different kind of planning and management as these sites are usually are managed by Governments and Governments incur high cost for their restoration and maintenance. Therefore, it would be important to assess the value of the different sites to prioritize restoration of these sites. To this mean, in this research different kind of values generated from historic sites has been considered and the most proper method in order to assess the total value of the sites has been proposed. Then an empirical study has been carried out by constituting original data for the value assessment of the Ferdowsi mausoleum site in Iran and the total value of the siteas well as its sub values has been assessed.

In Sweden, as well as in Europe, buildings are estimated to consume 40 % of the total energyuse. Moreover, one third of the European building stock consists of buildings with some sort ofdistinguable cultural or historic significance, and it follows logically that a considerablepercentage of Sweden’s and Europe’s total energy is consumed by this category of buildings –historic buildings. Especially when considering that historic buildings typically have inferiorenergy performance than other buildings. The challenge to improve the energy performance inhistoric buildings while also taking heritage values into consideration is undertaken within thescope of this master’s thesis. The European standard “Conservation of cultural heritage –Guidelines for improving the energy performance of historic buildings” (SS-EN 16883:2017) ispartially applied to a case-building in order to approach the challenge methodically.The energy performance of a building and proposed refurbishment measures is evaluatedthrough the use of computer-generated building energy models. Three different scenarios withsets of refurbishment measures have been simulated; (1) light impact, (2) moderate impact and(3) heavy impact on heritage values. Categorization of the refurbishment measures have beenaccomplished by using an objectivistic approach based on contemporary conservation theoriesand definitions. The theoretical framework is primarily based on conservation practices laid outby the Burra Charter.The light refurbishment package would reduce the heating energy use by almost 11 % whilehaving little to no impact on the building’s heritage values. The moderate package would reducethe heating energy use by 34,5 % without having a major impact on the building’s heritagevalues. The most invasive refurbishment package would, the heavy refurbishment package,would reduce the heating energy use by almost 40 %. This significant energy use reductionwould not come without its drawbacks. This package of measures would infact alter some of theexpressed character defining elements of the building.Improving the energy efficiency of built heritage is a challenge, especially when trying toassess the impact it might have on its heritage values. This master’s thesis can provide someinsight into the act of balancing energy improvement measures and cultural heritage valuesagainst one another, especially for buildings that lack formal protection in the form of legislativedirectives or policies. / I Sverige, såsom i övriga Europa, uppskattas byggnader stå för 40 % av den totalaenergianvändningen. Kategoriseringen avrenoveringsåtgärderna har uppnåtts genom att använda ett objektivistiskt tillvägagångssätt baseratpå rådande definitioner och kunskap från byggnadsmiljövården. Den teoretiska referensramen ärhuvudsakligen baserad på bevarandepraxis som fastställts i Burra-stadgan.Renoveringspaketet med ”lätt påverkan” skulle minska användningen av värmeenergi mednästintill 11 % samtidigt som åtgärden har liten eller ingen betydande inverkan på byggnadenskulturvärden. Det ”måttliga paketet” skulle kunna minska användningen av värmeenergi med34,5 % utan att ha en alltför stor inverkan på byggnadens kulturvärden. The aim of the study was to investigate natural values and the occurrence of pendulous lichens species in two areas located in subalpine coniferous woodland in Tärnaby, Västerbotten county in northern Sweden. The two areas have similar geology, hydrology and vegetation. Area A is affected by forestry, whilst area B isn’t. Forestry is one of the biggest threats to woodland species because it causes habitat fragmentation a loss of habitat. Pendulous lichens are most occurring in old growth forests where natural processes have been left undisturbed. Therefore, red-listed pendulous lichens are often used as a nature value indicator for identifying old-growth forests. In each study area, five sample areas was studied. In each sample area, a nature value assessment and an inventory of pendulous lichen species and red-listed pendulous lichen species was performed. In area A, three species of pendulous lichen where found, and five species were found in area B. In area B, two of the species found were Alectoria sarmentosa and Bryoria nadvornikiana, both listed as NT in the IUCN red list. In area A, no red listed species were found. Results also showed a higher natural value in the area not affected by forestry, area B, than in area A. The natural values and occurrence of pendulous lichen and red-listed pendulous lichen was higher in area B than in area A. The cause of the differences can’t be identified by this study, but the effect of forestry is probably one of the causes.

Value is the reason to conserve places. It is necessary to assess all values and meanings of cultural properties to provide right conservation decisions. Today, all cultural products are recognized as a part of heritage. In this context, users became one of the main sources in identification and valuation of cultural places. However, there is no commonly accepted method to assess user-ascribed values and integrate them to planning process.
Hence, the aim of the study is to define a process to assess user-ascribed values in relation with conservation decision-making process. The study evaluates two indicators to define the process. In the first one, the study evaluates multi-criteria decision analysis methods to define a thinking approach to integrate values to decision-making process and in the second one, evaluates the nature of users& / #8217 / valuations to identify data collection process. In this context, value assessment process is re-defined, by considering users valuations through problem solving thinking approach and a process is developed to assess user-ascribed values. The proposed process is examined with Tarsus case study.
Conclusion of the study points out that, users are important sources in identification of cultural properties. In this context, problem solving thinking approach can provide a proper approach to integrate values to planning process and user-based data can be assessed through utilization of more than one method. The conclusion also clarifies the need for establishment of new definitions and tools to protect user-valued places.

A Comparison between Singleton and Portfolio Patent Valuation in Auction Mode of Patent TransactionVimalnath, Pratheeba January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Patents have become a direct source of revenue, apart from providing legal protections for inventions. A patent generates revenue in its patented form through licensing or sell-out. Three challenges confront this shift in use of patents as direct revenue generators especially in the context of patent sale. First, the challenge of estimating the price a patent fetches in a sale (referred as ‗patent value‘) remains scarcely addressed owing to the intangible nature of patents and lack of patent sale data in public domain. Secondly, the variations in price and the method used to estimate the price while selling a patent individually (called as a singleton) or in a group along with other patents (called as portfolio) are little understood. Thirdly, literature focus so far has been on the static dimensions of patent value determinants leaving scope for researching the time varying dynamic nature of potential value determinants.
This thesis aims to systematically address the above challenges and research gaps through five specific research objectives pertaining to the following four aspects of patent sale:
(1) Successful sale aspect of patent lots in an auction (Research objective 1)
Research objective 1: To explore the determinants of successful sale of singletons and portfolios.
(2) Selling strategy aspect of the sold patents (Research objective 2)
Research objective 2: To characterize the singleton and portfolio patent lots successfully sold in an auction.
(3) Time dynamic aspect of factors influencing price (Research objectives 3 & 4) Research objective 3: To investigate the effect of time dynamic nature of patent age on the selling prices of singletons and portfolios.
Research objective 4: To understand the effect of time dynamic trend of technological importance (TI) and patent class trend on selling prices of singletons and portfolios.
(4) Valuation aspect (Research objective 5)
Research objective 5: To identify the determinants of selling prices of singletons and portfolios.
In this thesis, we use a combination of patent bibliometric and market based approach to study various aspects of singleton and portfolio patent sale incorporating the time dynamic aspect. A set of US patents auctioned by an US auction firm, called Ocean Tomo, is used as sample. The sample was dominated by patents from Computer & Communication field.
The research findings showed significant differences in the characteristics of sold and unsold lots both in the case of singletons and portfolios. Amongst the sold lots, singletons were found to include more novel (lesser patent backward citations) and technology specific (higher C&C technology scope) patents than the portfolios sold. Further investigation on the variation in selling prices fetched by singletons and portfolios showed portfolios fetching significantly higher prices than singletons at the lot level. Interestingly, at a granular level, the equation reversed with singletons showing significantly higher price compared to the average price per individual US patent member within the portfolio.
Along the time dynamic aspect, the existence of an optimal age to sell patents for higher prices is evidenced especially in the case of singletons from C&C technology field. The optimal age was found to be around 10 year 2 months of age from grant of singletons. No such optimal age was identified for portfolios. The growth trend analysis of the forward citations (technological importance of patent) and the patent applications filed within the specific patent class of a patent (attractiveness of patent class) illustrated the significance of the patent class trend in explaining variation in selling price of singletons.
Finally, the valuation models of singletons and portfolios showed singletons being valued more on the patent related characteristics unlike portfolios which were valued based on the all three aspects – patent, seller and bundling.
In summary, the novelty of the thesis resides in the (1) incorporation of new set of variables namely forward citation diversity, forward citations trend, patent class trend, technology scope and portfolio type in understanding patent price (2) treatment of time dynamic variables in understanding patent value and (3) focus on portfolio analysis through independent analysis of singleton and portfolio selling prices.
