Orientador : Kamal A. R. Ismail / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia de Campinas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-16T13:01:09Z (GMT).

The Vela pulsar in very high energy gamma-rays with H.E.S.S. II

Gajdus, Michael 19 September 2016 (has links)
The analysis of the first pulsar to be detected with the H.E.S.S. array is presented. The high significance detection at the 11.4 s level down to a hitherto unachievable 15 GeV energy threshold is a result of 24 h of observations of the Vela pulsar with the new CT5 telescope introduced into the array in 2012. This is only the second pulsar to be detected in the very high energy (VHE) ?-ray regime. Of particular interest are the VHE spectra of pulsars as this is an almost completely unexplored energy domain. This does however entail smaller signals as the rate of ?-rays generally drops according to a power law function. New weighted statistical tests are introduced to improve the sensitivity to weak pulsations for use with future observations of pulsars. These tests are modifications of currently used tests and are applicable to any discrete data in which a single or many pulses are expected; they are powerful when the phase profile is unknown and with a basic weighting provide up to a 10 % boost in detection significance. An optimised analysis chain contributed to the detection of the Vela pulsar with phase averaged energy flux in the energy range (15,125) GeV of 4.29_(-1.02)^(+1.14)_stat _(-3.31)^(+5.50)_sys × 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1). The single pulse is characterised with an asymmetric Lorentzian function with a narrower trailing edge. The photon flux falls as a power law with index -5.39 which is moderately consistent with an Angular Gap emission model but represents a steeper drop in emission than that measured with the Fermi-LAT. The emission efficiency of the Vela pulsar in the VHE band is evaluated as 0.0025 %, which is comparable to that of the Crab pulsar in the same energy regime measured with the MAGIC telescope array. Comparisons to other candidate VHE pulsars are also drawn. A weak constraint is placed on the energy at which Lorentz invariance violation occurs in terms of the Planck energy as E_LIV>10^(-4) E_P.

Vanguarda do atraso ou atraso da vanguarda? Oswald de Andrade e os teimosos destinos do Brasil / Avant-guard delay or delay of the avant-guard? Oswald de Andrade and the obstinate destinations of Brazil

Lima, Bruna Della Torre de Carvalho 01 October 2012 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to find the matrixes of the concept of anthropophagy created by the modernist Oswald de Andrade, as it was formulated in the Manifesto Antropófago of 1928 and later works, such as the play O Rei da Vela (1933) and the philosophical thesis A Crise da Filosofia Messiânica (1950), from the standpoint of a line of thinking which seeks to analyse the alterative processes of identity formation in peripheral countries. Oswald de Andrade was the author of many of the most audacious avant-guard experiences in Latin America and his writings enlighten Brazil´s history ever since. Following this problematic, this dissertation aims also to understand, through the reading of the works of Oswald de Andrade which was developed by the tropicalist movement in the 1970´s, as well as its contemporary reception, the complex articulation of modernist art and the cultural and political history of the country.

Wide Field Aperture Synthesis Radio Astronomy

Bock, Douglas Carl-Johan January 1998 (has links)
This thesis is focussed on the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), reporting on two primary areas of investigation. Firstly, it describes the recent upgrade of the MOST to perform an imaging survey of the southern sky. Secondly, it presents a MOST survey of the Vela supernova remnant and follow-up multiwavelength studies. The MOST Wide Field upgrade is the most significant instrumental upgrade of the telescope since observations began in 1981. It has made possible the nightly observation of fields with area ~5 square degrees, while retaining the operating frequency of 843 MHz and the pre-existing sensitivity to point sources and extended structure. The MOST will now be used to make a sensitive (rms approximately 1 mJy/beam) imaging survey of the sky south of declination -30&deg. This survey consists of two components: an extragalactic survey, which will begin in the south polar region, and a Galactic survey of latitudes |b| &lt 10&deg. These are expected to take about ten years. The upgrade has necessitated the installation of 352 new preamplifiers and phasing circuits which are controlled by 88 distributed microcontrollers, networked using optic fibre. The thesis documents the upgrade and describes the new systems, including associated testing, installation and commissioning. The thesis continues by presenting a new high-resolution radio continuum survey of the Vela supernova remnant (SNR), made with the MOST before the completion of the Wide Field upgrade. This remnant is the closest and one of the brightest SNRs. The contrast between the structures in the central pulsar-powered nebula and the synchrotron radiation shell allows the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the resolved shell filaments. The survey covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of 43&quot x 60&quot, while imaging structures on scales up to 30'. It has been used for comparison with Wide Field observations to evaluate the performance of the upgraded MOST. The central plerion of the Vela SNR (Vela X) contains a network of complex filamentary structures. The validity of the imaging of these filaments has been confirmed with Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 1.4 GHz. Unlike the situation in the Crab Nebula, the filaments are not well correlated with H-alpha emission. Within a few parsec of the Vela pulsar the emission is much more complex than previously seen: both very sharp edges and more diffuse emission are present. It has been postulated that one of the brightest filaments in Vela X is associated with the X-ray feature (called a `jet') which appears to be emanating from the region of the pulsar. However, an analysis of the MOST and VLA data shows that this radio filament has a flat spectral index similar to another more distant filament within the plerion, indicating that it is probably unrelated to the X-ray feature.

Devaneio e Movimento na experiência do velejar / Dream and movement in sailing experience

Hackerott, Maria Altimira 17 September 2018 (has links)
This research eyes on the foundations of a phenomenon that goes forward together with humanity: the Sailing. Despite the technology development, which provides many navigation forms, the sailing remains actual, whether as transportation, as a hobby or as a sport. The Sailing extrapolates its utility. For the sailor\'s point of view, the sailing is clearly more than just crossing a liquid environment using the wind force. The sailors, who is the experience subject, assign meaning to the practice of sailing and make it something that is worth returning to. To investigate these meanings and senses, this research seeks to put into words what is special in the practice of sailing from the sailors perspective. Through an extensive field research, where I could live, practice and interact with other sailing athletes, artisanal fishermen, and expeditionist sailors, I identified recurring and significant elements for those who practice the Sailing. Along with these elements, my experience as a sailor has also been added to this research. Using pictures, interviews, and descriptions of different experiences, the analysis of this work is anchored in the framework of Gaston Bachelard\'s phenomenology of material imagination, revealing from the reports, the gestures, the fascinations, the provocations, and the different sensibilities present in this modality which is as ancient as it is actual. Competition and contemplation, adventure and tour, tradition and modernity, initiatory and formative rites, material elements and their provocations, among others, unite in the purpose of unveiling a practice that turns out to be complex. The dream of live in the water and dominate the wind using a sail and a hull is constantly updated in the body of the sailors in a closely and intimately way

Estados de humor de atletas da seleção brasileira de vela nos Jogos Pan Americanos / Mood states in Brazilian sailing team at pan-american games

Brandt, Ricardo 21 August 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-12-06T17:07:20Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ricardo Brandt.pdf: 781933 bytes, checksum: 509321a63f72caaf08d7623e963701f6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-08-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Mood states in levels considered adjusted contribute excessively for the best sport income. The objective of the research was to characterize the athletes of the Brazilian National Sailing Team and to evaluate the mood states during the Panamerican Games. This is a descriptive correlacional research that used as instruments the "Questionnaire of characterization, auto-evaluation of the life style, faith spirituality" of Andrade (2001) and the "Brazilian Scale of Mood (BRAMS)" of Rohlfs (2004). The study was made during the Panamerican Games with athletes of the Brazilian National Sailing Team. The collections of the data was made in the Hotel where the athletes were lodged, before and after the regattas and in the place of the competition, after the regattas. Six athletes participated of the study (five men and a woman) by convenience or accessibility, between 19 and 39 years ( x =25 ±3,1) that had competed in different classrooms in the sail (Hob Cat 16, Snipe, feminine masculine Rs:X and, Sunfish and J-24). The results demonstrate that the majority of the athletes presents excellent health, good quality of sleep and rest. The majority of the athletes are Jewish and catholics and believe a little in the aid of a superior being in the solutions of problems, recovery of illness or injury as well as in the sport income. In general way the athletes had presented good mood condition during the competition and the main alterations had been in the levels of anger and tension that, from empirical evidences, is considered that these variable in raised levels, can contribute positively in the sport income and are evident that better quality of sleep has relation with more positive states of mood. We concluded that the mood profile of the athletes of the Brazilian National Sailing Team during the Panamerican Games consists in high levels of vigor and low of fatigue, associates to moderate levels of tension, depression, confusion and extremely raised of anger. To understand better the mood states it is necessary to know deeply the athlete all and the context that surrounds him.
