How Do Scientists Cross Cultural Borders between Religion and Science: A Case Study

Barner, Chester A, III 07 May 2011 (has links)
The cultures of science and religion have had different levels of conflict throughout the past several hundred years due in part to the development of the theory of evolution. Although many ideas abound in science education as to the alleviation of this struggle, few studies have examined how scientists who profess religious beliefs deal with this conflict. In general, the study sought to understand the cognitive dynamic of the cultural interaction between the scientific and religious culture within a few individuals. Specifically, the study allowed scientists to explain how they found a measure of compatibility between their faith and their scientific endeavors. Within the boundaries of both the general and specific purposes for the study, the following research question was used: How do college science professors describe the interaction between their faith and their scientific knowledge in reference to their transitioning between a naturalistic or scientific understanding and a super-naturalistic or religious understanding? Three theoretical lenses were used as backdrop to view the cultural interaction. World View (Kearney, 1984), Collateral Learning Theory (Jegede, 1995), and Faith Perspective in relation to the Stages of Faith Theory (Fowler, 1981) constituted the theoretical framework. Because of the qualitative nature of the research, the author used a modified naturalistic paradigm that stressed an emergent quality, grounded categorical design, and a modified case study written format that aided in the understanding of data generated through multiple qualitative methods. Three overlapping themes emerged within the data that offer new insights not only into the complex nature of the conflict but also into the ways scientists themselves find a reason to have faith as well as scientific knowledge. Boundaries based upon a philosophical and world view difference, conflict due to culturally integrative ideas, and cultural bridges without distortion made up the overlapping thematic ideas that were consistently demonstrated by each participant. The insights demonstrated by this study may also enlighten the science education community to the importance of both culture and belief in reference to a meaningful learning experience in science.

Through the Looking Glass: Another Reading of Willa Cather's The Professor's House

Bonacchi, Rebecca H 01 August 2012 (has links)
This project examines Cather’s experimentation with conflicting voices of narrative authority in the presentation of four central female characters in The Professor’s House, using St. Peter and an entity termed the implied narrator as lenses through which we view other characters. The project is broken down into four chapters, each dealing one addressing the central issues involving that specific female character.

Beyond Interference Avoidance: Distributed Sun-network Scheduling in Wireless Networks with Local Views

Santacruz, Pedro 16 September 2013 (has links)
In most wireless networks, nodes have only limited local information about the state of the network, which includes connectivity and channel state information. With limited local information about the network, each node’s knowledge is mismatched; therefore, they must make distributed decisions. In this thesis, we pose the following question - if every node has network state information only about a small neighborhood, how and when should nodes choose to transmit? While link scheduling answers the above question for point-to-point physical layers which are designed for an interference-avoidance paradigm, we look for answers in cases when interference can be embraced by advanced code design, as suggested by results in network information theory. To make progress on this challenging problem, we propose two constructive distributed algorithms, one conservative and one aggressive, which achieve rates higher than link scheduling based on interference avoidance, especially if each node knows more than one hop of network state information. Both algorithms schedule sub-networks such that each sub-network can employ advanced interference-embracing coding schemes to achieve higher rates. Our innovation is in the identification, selection and scheduling of sub-networks, especially when sub-networks are larger than a single link. Using normalized sum-rate as the metric of network performance, we prove that the proposed conservative sub-network scheduling algorithm is guaranteed to have performance greater than or equal to pure coloring-based link scheduling. In addition, the proposed aggressive sub-network scheduling algorithm is shown, through simulations, to achieve better normalized sum-rate than the conservative algorithm for several network classes. Our results highlight the advantages of extending the design space of possible scheduling strategies to include those that leverage local network information.

Internationalization of Chinese Construction Equipment Firms : “Take-off Drivers & Entry Strategies”

Halak, Michael, Reinke, Charlene January 2011 (has links)
This master thesis investigates how Chinese construction equipment firms internationalize (i.e. how they enter new markets and how they are driven to exit their own). For this, the institutions of China and Brazil are comparatively analyzed, Porter’s five forces model is used to analyze the Chinese construction equipment industry, while distinct resources, capabilities and key success factors are defined and analyzed for Sany and Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG). After careful analysis, the authors bring to light various take-off drivers, patterns and strategies of Chinese construction equipment firms when internationalizing or venturing abroad. Chinese construction equipment firms are beginning to follow their Western counterparts, focusing their efforts on product quality and extensive customer service. Warranties, parts centers, aftermarket service and strategically placed research and development facilities are becoming more greatly utilized, expanding the quality and offerings of Chinese firms, while adding to the customers perception of overall value.    These key insights expand the knowledge base associated with Chinese construction equipment firms in developing markets, while unlocking new theoretical perspectives for supplementary research.

Kurs i projektarbete : Elevsyn på kursen och mina egna tankar om ett alternativ / Course in project work : Student views on the course and my own thoughts about an alternative

Markusson, Pär January 2011 (has links)
This study has been performed at a smaller high school and with its industry students, the high school is located in a small industrial community. The purpose of my study has been to find out what students think about their work with the project work, what they think has been positive and negative, how their motivation is influenced by the work on the project and if the work has been affected by factors outside the school world. The interviews have been carried out like normal conversation with open questions. The students who participated in the study comes from the school where I did my internship. The selection was done by asking all students from a specific course, those who were positive to participate are also the ones I have chosen to interview.   My main study results, in summary, described as the students, once they were inside their work were positive to the project work and felt motivated in their work. Negative experiences, for the students which attend a practical program, has mainly been economic, as the school does not provide any financial support. Students are left to finance their own projects, which also is the factor outside the school that has affected the most. Students find it costly to do a project.

The contribution of cloud computing to SMEs competitive advantage : A resource-based view

Ekström Winroth, Sten, Bettels, Franco January 2012 (has links)
The phenomenon analyzed within this thesis is the uprising of cloud computing technologies and their potential impact on SMEs. Cloud computing is ought to enable new capabilities for SMEs by the key benefits of being less expensive and its ubiquitous accessibility. The research was constituted on the theoretical framework of the resource based view and was conducted via semi-structured interviews along the themes of application history, financial impact, structural impact, strategic impact, risk considerations and future outlook. Thereby the core research question was to understand the impact of cloud computing technologies as new resources on the competitive advantage of SMEs. Therefore, 183 SMEs were contacted via email which were selected from a commerce authority and internet inquiry from which 6 agreed to an interview. The interview outcomes were analyzed by coding and an interpretation of the qualitative findings. Significant outcomes were that cloud computing provides SMEs capabilities of collaboration and mobility. The impact on innovation could not be verified but was indicated. Moreover, the adaption of cloud computing has led to SMEs saving resources in terms of time, IT budget and specific IT knowledge. The provision of the new capabilities and the savings of resources have shown to improve the SMEs’ overall performance by complementing, supplementing and substituting existing resources. Nevertheless, no direct linkage could be identified to a contribution to a competitive advantage but suggestive indirect linkages were found. However, the findings might deliver new comprehension about the organizational impact of cloud computing on SMEs in terms of resource enhancement and their impact on business practices. Furthermore, implications for future research include the need for investigation of the internal charging of cloud services and particular to narrow down the key advantages of cloud computing for SMEs and raise their business awareness as a source of competitive advantage. / <p>This paper has been a collective effort between Sten Ekström Winroth and Franco Bettels, the thesis has though been written in collaborative between the Management and Informatics department at Jönköping International Business School. These two departments have different requirements of the thesis writing process, which entails that we the authors have had different requirements. This is the reason that two theses exist with the same name, these two theses differ in the details, but are overall the same. </p>

Health is about being happy : A study in an elementary school in the Philippines

Magnusson, Lina, Bjersgård, Sara January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to investigate how children apprehend health and what factors teachers ascribed have the most importance for 10-12 years old children’s health. By these two questions at issue in our thesis we hope to support teachers’ education of health and suggest where they should put their main focus. What does health mean to children in an elementary school in the Philippines? What factors do teachers ascribe as the most important for children’s health?   To reach our aim we interviewed twelve children and did a questionnaire among 20 teachers. Our study is based on Bronfenbrenner’s theoretical perspective, both as our theoretical basis and as our methodical analysis structure. The result and analysis showed that health is defined differently among the children. Definitions that the children’s statements put most frequent focus on were happiness, the body condition and believes. The most important factors, ascribed by the teachers, are found in Bronfenbrenner’s micro- and mesosystem and are “good personal hygiene”, “eating healthy food” and to have “a good relationship between the home and the school”. The result also shows that the exosystem have the least important summary of all mean values but the individual factor the teachers ascribe as the least important is “the government ideology” in the macrosystem.

A Study on the Strategies of Value-added Supply Chain Management in Nuclear Medicine

Chang, Chung-shihn 24 June 2010 (has links)
Since the Canadian nuclear reactor ¡§NRU¡¨ was shut down on 14th May, 2009, the global Moly shortage has occurred for a year. The crisis was not only an impact for the patients of the hospitals in Taiwan, but also decreased the sales and margin profit of the nuclear medicine distributors. The S company, a leading and monopolistical distributor in Taiwan, was no longer reliable for its customers because of the nuclear medicine shortage. Actually it looks like the advantage of the S company is lost and the reputation is damaged. This research is trying to figure out how a nuclear medicine distributor like the S company can pursue some effective supply chain strategies to turn around and keep the growth of profit. AHP is the study method for this research. But at first we¡¦ll plan some strategies and tactics for the nuclear medicine distributors (especial the S company), according to Potters¡¦ competition theory and the resource based view of the firm. And then develop the two levels structure for the AHP study in this research. The factors of upper level are 4 strategies, like ¡§Research & Development Strategy¡¨ etc. The factors of lower level are 18 tactics or plans just like ¡§Try to acquire new technology from the advanced radiopharmaceutical institutes¡¨ etc. The AHP will be performed by surveys of experts¡¦ opinions, including both qualitative and quantitative surveys. Five different groups of experts were sampling and chosen for the surveys. By the AHP, the two most weights of the tactics are determined. They are ¡§Integrate individual (country) procurement into multinational procurement for reducing cost¡¨ and ¡§Actively globalized procurement, and monopolistically securing the sources¡¨. Besides, we can discover more valuable opinions from the qualitative analysis of the expert¡¦s surveys. So the results of this research, the effective and advanced strategies and tactics, are the first securing more reliable sources of the nuclear medicine and the second improving globalized procurement. And then try to enhance marketing and strengthen customer relationship. These will be expected to be helpful on both distributors¡¦ profit and customers¡¦ satisfaction.
