Freedom in Structure: Life Inside The House of Bernarda Alba

Bercovici, Toby V. 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, I take the reader through the process and particular challenges of directing The House of Bernarda Alba, from choosing a translation, to casting from a pool of mostly undergraduate actors, to staging a show in-the-round. More particularly, I compare my previous work with adaptation to this process of treating the script as a fixed entity. I also offer a detailed explanation of the exploratory work I did with the actors in building the physicality of the play-world and exploring the relationships of the characters. For this, I drew heavily on Anne Bogart’s composition exercises, found in The Viewpoints Book. In this thesis, I transcribe and analyze some of the material generated through these exercises. Finally, I endeavor to prove that a certain freedom can be found through structure, and that the challenge of this production - which was assigned to me rather than a personal choice - helped me develop a more subtle creative voice than I had previously possessed.

Practitioner viewpoints on diet and inflammatory bowel disease

Stern, Eytan Ish 07 August 2020 (has links)
Diet is a key factor in the development and progression of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). A variety of diets have been studied with IBD patients. This cross-sectional survey identified current healthcare practitioner views on different diets and their efficacy with IBD patients. Diets were rated on awareness, compliance, and contributors to success by participants (n = 181). Frequencies were conducted, and ANOVA with Duncan pairwise comparison or chi-square analysis were used to determine significant differences. Most participants (96%) and 98% of registered dietitians (RD) considered using diet to help treat IBD patients. RDs perceived the low fiber or low residue diet easiest for patient compliance (4.2 ± 1.0, P < .05), and the specific carbohydrate diet hardest for patient compliance (2.4 ± 1.4). Initial and follow up consultations with a RD significantly contributed to patient success across all diets, and greater involvement from the RD may solve issues with compliance.

This analysis allowed the development of the research problem and the guiding question: How can the Frames, Viewpoints and Semiotic Representation Registers be articulated for the teaching of Conics in the basic cycle? In order to answer it we are based on the notions of Frames and Frames game, the Theory of Semiotic Representation Records and the notions of Viewpoints. In this sense, we verified that the articulation sought in the research question should consider the Tables of Geometry and Analytical Geometry, the View of the intersection between cone and straight circular plane, the View of the Geometric Place, the Point of View of Eccentricity And the Analytical Point of View, in addition to the Records of Semiotic Representation material, figural, figural dynamic, graphic and algebraic, as well as to seek treatments and conversions associated with these points of view. We point out for future investigations, that can carry out a study like this with a focus on higher education, considering the notions of Envolvente, Descriptive Geometry and Linear Algebra and studies that develop a didactic engineering with third year high school students and the organization of A teacher training, using this study as a basis to explore other relevant aspects that may complement this research / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo construir um estudo matemático e didático das cônicas no âmbito da Geometria e da Geometria Analítica a partir do delineamento da metodologia da pesquisa bibliográfica, na qual analisamos documentos que já receberam um tratamento analítico tais como documentos oficiais da educação básica, livros, dissertações, teses e artigos relacionados ao tema de investigação.

Supporting Organizational Problem Solving with a Workstation

Barber, Gerald 01 July 1982 (has links)
This paper describes an approach to supporting work in the office. Using and extending ideas from the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) we describe office work as a problem solving activity. A knowledge embedding language called Omega is used to embed knowledge of the organization into an office worker's workstation in order to support the office worker in his or her problem solving. A particular approach to reasoning about change and contradiction is discussed. This approach uses Omega's viewpoint mechanism. Omega's viewpoint mechanism is a general contradiction handling facility. Unlike other Knowledge Representation systems, when a contradiction is reached the reasons for the contradiction can be analyzed by the deduction mechanism without having to resort to a backtracking mechanism. The Viewpoint mechanism is the heart of the Problem Solving Support Paradigm. This paradigm supplements the classical AI view of problem solving. Office workers are supported using the Problem Solving Support Paradigm. An example is presented where Omega's facilities are used to support an office worker's problem solving activities. The example illustrates the use of viewpoints and of Omega's capabilities to reason about it's own reasoning process.

Coaching Efficacy and Stakeholders' Perceptions of Coaches: Relationships with National Coaching Standards

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Research on coaching behaviors as well as how these behaviors relate to national standard is limited. Utilizing the conceptual framework of the National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) National Coaching Standards and the body of literature on coaching behaviors, the current study examined: (a) coaching behaviors, coach's self- efficacy and stakeholders' (i.e., athlete, parents'/guardians') perceptions of their coaches' effectiveness, and (b) an in-depth review of coaching effectiveness with a subsample of coaches (observations) as well as comparing coaching behaviors to the National Coaching Standards (NASPE, 2006). Coaches completed the Coaching Efficacy Scale (CES), while athletes and parents'/guardians' used a modified version of the CES measuring perceptions of coaching effectiveness. Observations [using the Arizona State University Observation Instrument (ASUIO)], formal and informal interviews, and document analyses [field notes, artifacts, and interviews] were used to explore coaching behaviors and perceptions of coaching experiences as they relate to the NASPE Coaching Standards. Coaches had the post positive perceptions (efficacy) of the stakeholder groups. Consistent with previous research on effective coaches, it was found that this cohort of coaches frequently used instruction (38.5%) and non-instructional (51.07%) behaviors (Becker & Wrisberg, 2008; Bloom, Crumpton, & Anderson, 1999; Kahan, 1999; Lacy & Darst, 1985; Segrave & Ciancio, 1990). Qualitative data revealed three themes related to coaching effectiveness and relationships with the NASPE Coaching Standards: (a) the structure of the program and environment, (b) pedagogical content knowledge, and (c) past athletic experiences. Findings suggest that observed coaching behaviors do not enact many of the NASPE Coaching Standards and that coaches are not be aware of the national standards. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2014
