Neva Boyd, en lekteoretiker för dramapedagogik : En historisk fallstudie / Neva Boyd, a play theorist for drama pedagogy : A historical case study

Umerkajeff, Marie January 2014 (has links)
This is a historical documentary research study across Neva Leona Boyd (1876-1963). The theoretical perspective is based on the historical perspective of knowledge from ancient Greece to the approach of modern symbolic interactionism. The study shows that Boyd, who was Viola Spolins teacher, was a proponent of the modern view of group play theory. 1909 she founded Chicago School for Playground Workers, later transformed to the Recreation Training School. Until 1927, the school entered in Hull-House initiated by Jane Addams. The school was incorporated with Northwestern University. Boyd also worked at other schools and the Illinois Department of Public Welfare, where she designed a recreational program for the mentally ill. Contemporary with Boyd was George H. Mead and John Dewey. Boyd's previous work turns out to have some connection to Sweden when Boyd collected and systematized games from different geographical regions of the world. Boyd’s group play theory are identified and described. Boyd’s group play theory highlights the importance of leadership and the intimacy leaders manage to create in group work.

Évaluation de l’approche métabolomique pour l’authentification des extraits naturels utilisés dans le secteur arômes et parfums / Metabolomics for the authentication of natural extracts used in flavour and fragrances

Saint-Lary, Laure 10 June 2015 (has links)
Some natural extracts are very scarce and expensive. The temptation is therefore very high for producers or brokers to resort to adulterations. Mixing of extracts from related botanical origins, from different geographical origins, addition of synthetic compounds with natural occurrence in the extract, or addition of another vegetal extract, use of phytosanitary products, non-standardized extraction processes, are some examples. The quality differences are more and more difficult to detect. The objective of this PhD study was to develop a fast, efficient and non-targeted methodology. Metabolomics approach in UHPLC-HRMS was developped to identify defects or fraudulent practices in absolutes used in flavour and fragrances. These identifications are realized by the detection of chemical markers. Absolutes are a great challenge: between 50 and 95 % of the extracts consist of non-volatile compounds; moreover these products are seldom described in literature. The quest for validation for authenticity is then much more complex than in cases of volatile extracts such as essential oils, whose composition can be more easily determined by robust analytical instruments and numerous databases. Two symbolic plants used in perfumery were studied: viola (Viola odorata) and rose (Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia). Markers of French origin were identified for viola, and markers of R. centifolia were identified for rose. Their characterizations were nevertheless the fundamental limit for this technique being at trace level in the extract. This work demonstrated the performance and limitation of the non-targeted metabolomics approach on absolutes, which are specialties of perfumery.

Recent Approaches to Real-Time Notation

Shafer, Seth 05 1900 (has links)
This paper discusses several compositions that use the computer screen to present music notation to performers. Three of these compositions, Law of Fives (2015), Polytera II (2016), and Terraformation (2016–17), employ strategies that allow the notation to change during the performance of the work as the product of composer-regulated algorithmic generation and performer interaction. New methodologies, implemented using Cycling74's Max software, facilitate performance of these works by allowing effective control of generation and on-screen display of notation; these include an application called VizScore, which delivers notation and conducts through it in real-time, and a development environment for real-time notation using the Bach extensions and graphical overlays around them. These tools support a concept of cartographic composition, in which a composer maps a range of potential behaviors that are mediated by human or algorithmic systems or some combination of the two. Notational variation in performance relies on computer algorithms that can both generate novel ideas and be subject to formal plans designed by the composer. This requires a broader discussion of the underlying algorithms and control mechanisms in the context of algorithmic art in general. Terraformation, for viola and computer, uses a model of the performer's physical actions to constrain the algorithmic generation of musical material displayed in on-screen notation. The resulting action-based on-screen notation system combines common practice notation with fingerboard tablature, color gradients, and abstract graphics. This hybrid model of dynamic notation puts unconventional demands on the performer; implications of this new performance practice are addressed, including behaviors, challenges, and freedoms of real-time notation.

A Performance Guide to "The Sound of the Prairie Land (Caoyuan Zhige) for Viola and Piano" by Qingwu Guan

Zhang, Ke (Violist) 08 1900 (has links)
The Sound of the Prairie Land (Caoyuan Zhige) for viola and piano by the Chinese composer Qingwu Guan (b. 1938) has become one of the most popular works in the growing Chinese repertoire for viola. It also exists in another version for viola and viola ensemble, arranged by the Chinese violist Wing Ho, who also expanded the viola part with the composer's approval. The pentatonic work was highly influenced by the landscape and music of Inner Mongolia, a province of China next to the Mongolian border, and incorporates the music of an ode by the Inner Mongolian composer Alatengaole (1942–2011) called Sincere Wishes for a Long Life to Chairman Mao. Guan remains a strong supporter of Mao, the first chairman of the Chinese Communist Party. The work makes use of some performance techniques of the Inner Mongolian two-stringed fiddle called morin khuur, which has a similar tone to the viola: three kinds of slides, grace notes, imitations of a horse's neigh, and the representation of horses galloping across the prairie. The background of the work, understanding of the musical structure, and information about morin khuur techniques presented in this dissertation should aid performers in interpreting the work more authentically.

Paul Hindemith's sonatas for viola and piano

Lansdown, Louise 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is an account of Paul Hindemith's life between 1919 and 1939 with special reference to his compositional development through the three sonatas for viola and piano. The introduction to the dissertation initially provides a list of Hindemith's vast output for the viola followed by insight into the reason and need for undertaking this research, literary sources used and their function in the context of this study and the conclusion that there is a lack of extant research on the three sonatas for viola and piano. This is followed by comments on Hindemith as a viola player and composer, supported by opinions of scholars and performers. An overview of the contents and aim of the dissertation completes the introduction. This first of the two comprehensive chapters briefly discusses Hindemith's character traits as viewed by a number of scholars and continues by introducing the political, social and financial circumstances in Germany in 1919. The chapter progresses into a division of the period 1919-1939 into six sub-sections of dates within this time span. Each section focuses on the political, financial and musical circumstances in Hindemith's life, with special attention given to the periods of greatest change and conflict. Included in this chapter are also the specific circumstances surrounding the composition, first performances and publication of the three sonatas for viola and piano, alongside mention of other works written at the same time. This is supported by references and quotations from correspondence between Hindemith and his wife, colleagues and friends, as well as translations of newspaper articles, letters and articles which thus far have not been translated into English. Special attention is given to possible reasons for the late publication of op.25 no.4 in 1977. Chapter 2 looks deeper into the significance, success and development of Hindemith through these three works. His stylistic development beginning with the influences of Debussy and Reger, his identification with the 'Neue Sachlichkeit' until the beginning of his later conservatism can be seen clearly in these three works. The aim of the study is to assimilate the available information into an accurate and coherent picture of the composer's life and stylistic development between 1919 and 1939 in a way that has not been presented before. It is my intention through this work that the unique style of the sonatas as well as their important place in the viola repertoire is apparent, and consequently of interest to other viola players, hopefully encouraging them to play the works themselves.

Driver Drowsiness Monitoring Based on Yawning Detection

Abtahi, Shabnam 20 September 2012 (has links)
Driving while drowsy is a major cause behind road accidents, and exposes the driver to a much higher crash risk compared to driving while alert. Therefore, the use of assistive systems that monitor a driver’s level of vigilance and alert the fatigue driver can be significant in the prevention of accidents. This thesis introduces three different methods towards the detection of drivers’ drowsiness based on yawning measurement. All three approaches involve several steps, including the real time detection of the driver’s face, mouth and yawning. The last approach, which is the most accurate, is based on the Viola-Jones theory for face and mouth detection and the back projection theory for measuring both the rate and the amount of changes in the mouth for yawning detection. Test results demonstrate that the proposed system can efficiently measure the aforementioned parameters and detect the yawning state as a sign of a driver’s drowsiness.
