REHMAT, BADDAR, ISHFAQ, MUHAMMAD January 2011 (has links)
In the field of technology, every day new inventions are introduced in the society for promotion human beings life. By virtue of which all the citizens of society are facilitated according to their needs of life style. Most of the people from developed countries are benefited in all ways of life due to their nonstop efforts and struggle in the field of technology. However some are completely denied due to lack of awareness and lacking of technical education in the subject field. The handicapped people are not very well explored in each part of world, especially third world countries by the researchers. So we can claim it, for their weaknesses and so called interest to understand more about the handicapped people worldwide. To understanding about such people will provide us with opportunities to excel in the subfield. There is a big gap between the handicapped and society which causes to cut them off from society. This gap needs to be filled in, while carrying out researches in the desired fields. Our research area is related to ticket reservation machine for the visually impaired people, to make the process easy for them to buy ticket at their own from the ticketing machine. After studying different articles on the subject, it is proved that many inventions have already been done by researchers and others are in progress for helping out the handicapped people. We have presented screen prototypes of the interface of the ticketing machine for the visually impaired people. We collected many hardware devices as one kit which can be use in the machine for the visually impaired users. It will enhance their power of visual sense to perform tasks at their own. There are some principles to follow in building up any system for visually impaired or blind people. If followed these principles in true sense it will facilitate to make new interface designs for interaction with visually impaired or blind users in friendly way. In this way we can overcome the shortcomings between normal and visually impaired people, which will be a great achievement to serve the deprived people.

Although visually impaired individuals have great ability to adapt to a variety of situations through other senses, they still face some limitations, such as safe locomotion. Human navigation is a complex behavior, which depends mainly on vision. Therefore, for a visually impaired person, locomotion is a difficult task, especially in some situations, such as in unfamiliar surroundings or close to urban traffic. Map-based navigation applications provide significant help with guidance, mobility and location support, as well as with estimation of directions and distances. However, this kind of users still find great difficulties in accessing spatial information, since the interaction with this type of application is performed, mainly, through the vision. Thus, a study was carried out with the visually impaired to understand their main mobility needs, aiming at developing an accessible and collaborative mobility solution. The proposed solution includes a mobile application with accessible maps and sound effects, able to help the mobility of this type of users, taking into account possible obstacles in their paths and describing the environment in terms of Points of Interest (POI) around them and around a specific direction indicated by the user. In order to reach this goal, the Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) technique was used, since it has been shown to be efficient and low cost in obtaining geographic information. An experimental evaluation was conducted to evaluate the quality of the data obtained collaboratively, as well as experiments involving volunteer participants, in order to evaluate whether the proposed solution is satisfactory to mitigate the problems related to navigation of the visually impaired population. Finally, the results obtained in the experiments were encouraging, demonstrating that the proposed solution may be satisfactory for visually impaired users.

Higher education, in the uniqueness of training professionals to contribute to the growth of society, has had its own challenges in the process of inclusion of people with disabilities. The University Library can contribute to this process, mediating the access to information and academic knowledge through its products and services. The research has, as main objective, to identify challenges and opportunities, in the access to academic knowledge, for students with visual impairments and their professors, having the University Library as a mediator. The study is characterized as exploratory of qualitative approach, taking the interview as a tool for data collection. The locus of the research is the Federal University of Ceará and its students with visual impairment and / or those who have low vision, as well as their professors in the subjects they find major and minor difficulties in accessing academic knowledge. The research concludes that the possible mediation in the context of inclusive education in Library System deals with the aspects of: attitudinal accessibility, digital communication and architectural aspects. Nevertheless, in order that the desired measurement becomes effective it is necessary to internally develop at the UFC Library System some Accessibility Policy, establishing accessibility parameters for the activities which will guide the services and products of the library in order that it becomes a promoter of the inclusive education in the academic environment. The most reported need, both by students and professors, is for books. The main suggestion is for a repository with the works in digital format. As for the training of the professors they recognize that they require more knowledge and suggest courses, workshops and training. As regards the inclusion policy most of the professors have a superficial knowledge. The students in their speech present a more consistent knowledge. Both students and teachers believe in the importance of the inclusion policy and consider the University Library important in the inclusion process.

Fashion Beyond Sight : Perceptions of fashion and dress by visually impaired women in Finland

Kukkonen, Mikko January 2021 (has links)
Understanding fashion and dress is frequently dictated by the sense of sight and the social fact of visibility. This thesis aims to explore the phenomenon of non-visual fashion and dress with a particular focus on visually impaired people and their bodies as a site of knowledge production. While previous studies of the relationship between body and dress have examined how the sighted body is fashioned, the present small-scale and socio-sensorial study attempts to fathom how fashion and dress become perceivable in haptic, audial, and olfactory terms. This thesis engages thoughtfully with the visually impaired and their feelings related to the present-day field of fashion and dress, building on a Bourdieusan framework of habitus and embodiment applied to fashion studies. Employing qualitative interviews conducted among visually impaired women in Finland, this thesis gives voice to the people meagrely represented in the literature on fashion and dress. Furthermore, while acknowledging the empirically grounded non-visual dimension, this thesis adheres to previous contributions of revaluing the plurality of epistemologies and discourses vis-à-vis fashion, dress, and the body.

Jak vypadá neviditelné město / What does an invisible city look like

Gavriněvová, Kristýna January 2012 (has links)
The subject of this thesis entitled What does an invisible city look like is the perception of a city and the way it is represented. The work is based on urban semiotics that sees urban environment as a particular system of communication. The methods of sensory urbanism and rhythm analysis are employed as well. The author asks whether the cities could be represented by other than visual symbols as it is usually the case for the products of tourism industry (guidebooks, souvenirs, etc.). Usually, the symbol of a particular city is formed by the image of its skyline. In Prague, this is the skyline of the Prague Castle, in Paris, it is the Eiffel tower, in New York, it is the Statue of Liberty, etc. But every city has definitely many other qualities. What are they? To find the answer, the author asks for help the visually impaired people. These people can tell easily what are the non-visual qualities of the urban space as they experience them necessarily in their everyday life and use them for better orientation. The author interviewed the visually impaired people and she also observed the way they read the city in real. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the Prague city centre.
