Statika a dynamika římské rodiny / Static and Dynamic Aspects of the Roman Family

Stloukalová, Kamila January 2020 (has links)
Static and Dynamic Aspects of the Roman Family Abstract: The thesis deals with Roman family law, the core of the research being the Roman family in the Republican era and the beginning of the Principate. However, the archaic rules of regal period on one hand, and of the period of Dominate or even of the times of Justinian on the other, can also be included to present the overall picture of the development of a certain institution. Three main research goals are outlined in the introduction of the work to be reached throughout the following three chapters. The first goal is to define the term of the Roman family; the second is to connect theory and practice, i.e. so-called law in books and law in action. Therefore, we shall first analyze the legal rules and then compare these theoretical findings with their practical application. The practice shall be ascertained mainly from the non-legal sources of literal or epigraphic character. The third goal is to utilize an interdisciplinary approach, i.e. to use the outcomes, methods, and procedures from the research fields other than legal sciences to deepen our knowledge of the Roman family. The first chapter (Family in Ancient Rome) focuses on the Roman family from different points of view. The polysemous terms familia and domus are analyzed. Familia signifies...

Creative sparks : literary responses to electricity, 1830-1880

Pratt-Smith, Stella January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines accounts of electricity in journalism, short stories, novels, poetry and instructional writings, composed between 1830 and 1880 by scientific investigators, popular practitioners and fiction authors. The writings are approached as diverse and often incongruous impressions of electricity, in which the use of figurative and narrative techniques brings into question distinctions between science and literature. It is proposed that the unusual combination of electricity’s historical characterisation as an elixir vitae, intense investigation by contemporary scientists, and close alliance with new technologies offered unique opportunities for imaginative speculation. The thesis contends that engaging with these conflicting characteristics created a synthesis of scientific, social and literary responses that defy epistemological and generic categorisation. Fictionality is approached in chapter two as a central feature of scientific conceptualisation, experiment and discovery, particularly in the work of Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell. In chapters three and four, the landscape of popular non-fiction books and periodicals is mapped, to show the ways in which the period’s publication contexts and forums, reading patterns, and use of literary practices contributed to wider engagement with ideas about electricity. Chapters five and six focus on fiction writings, identifying parallels and divergences between actual electrical science and its fictional portrayal. Short stories are shown to have emphasised associations between electricity, neurosis, deformity and the occult, complicating contemporary scientific optimism and presenting electricity as an alluring yet dangerous phenomenon, which disordered the natural world and man’s relationship with it. These characteristics are identified further in the metaphorical references of several canonical novelists, in the exploitation of electricity, elixirs and power depicted by William Harrison Ainsworth and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and through a case study of the text and reception of a popular novel about electricity by Benjamin Lumley. The thesis contends that electricity’s anomalous and protean nature produced distinctively hybrid responses that enhance our understanding of contemporary popular writing, its contexts and how it was read.

Silveira, Daniela Oliveira January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation aims to discuss the construction of the concept of history of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Sul (Rio Grande do Sul Historical and Geographical Institute). It develops an analysis of the profile of the man who founded this institution in 1920, in Porto Alegre/RS, inspired by its national congeners, the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute). Initially, it presents a brief analysis about the founders' professional trajectories and their experiences concerning the letters. The second part broaches the constitution of the concept of history appropriated by the Institute, through the analysis of the texts published in its journal. It's known that the historiography's discourse structured is the result of a symbiosis between the ancient concept of History, marked by the principles of the Historia magistra vitae, and the modern concept of History, which intended to guarantee the production of a scientific and positive knowledge, the main goal of the Institute.

Automatic methods for assisted recruitment / Méthodes automatiques pour l'aide au recrutement

Cabrera Diego, Luis Adrian 09 December 2015 (has links)
The massification of the Internet and computers has changed several aspects of our daily life and the way we apply to a job is not the exception. Nowadays, the recruitment and selection of applicants for a job is done through the use of information technologies, creating what it is known as e-Recruitment. Since the last 15 years, the researchers in Natural Language Processing have been studying how to improve the performance of recruiters with the help of the e-Recruitment. Several systems have been developed in this field, from the job and applicants search engines to the automatic ranking of applicants. In the last case, most of the developed systems consist in the comparison between the résumés of applicants and a job offer. Only one system makes use of résumés from past selection processes to rank newer applicants. In this thesis we study whether and how we can use the résumés, without having to use past selection processes, to develop new methods for e-Recruitment systems. More specifically, we start with the automatic treatment of a large set of résumés used during real recruitment and selection processes. Then, we analyze and apply different proximity measures to know which are the most adequate to study the résumés of applicants. We introduce, after, an innovative method which consists on the Relevance Feedback and the use of proximity measures over uniquely the résumés to rank applicants. Finally, we present the study and application of a statistical measure which allows us to compare, at the same time, the job offer, one specific applicant and the rest of applicants, in order to rank all the job candidates. Along this thesis we show that résumés have enough information about the selection processes, in order to rank the applicants. Nonetheless, it is important to choose correctly the proximity measure to use. As well, we present interesting outcomes from the triple comparison between résumés and job offers. The results obtained in this thesis are the basis for a new prototype of an e-Recruitment system and hopefully, the beginning of a new way to create these.

Cloutier, Louis-Martin 20 April 2021 (has links)

His work was developed in the fields of metaphysics, ethics and poetics. The philosophical text, written in Arabic and translated to Latin as Fons Vitae, was used by the medieval Christian philosophers who, calling him Avicebron, did not known his origin. His poems, written in Hebrew, were incorporated to the Jewish liturgy. In 1847, Salomon Munk discovered that they were the same man. This has made possible the attempt to identify the sources which had influenced the several facets of the author s work, facilitating the contact with the central core of his ideas. The aim of this work is the reconstruction of the author s identity from the comprehension of his work as the reflex of a mystical quest. For such purpose, we use a methodology developed from Henri Bergson indications, who understands the Intuition as a philosophical method, which would be reached through a Mediating Image / Schlomo Ibn Gabirol foi um pensador judeu que viveu na Espanha sob o domínio islâmico.
