The Teradata database system is specially designed for data warehousing environment. This thesis explores the use of Teradata in this environment and describes its characteristics and potential areas for optimization. The theoretical part is tended to be a user study material and it shows the main principles Teradata system operation and describes factors significantly affecting system performance. Following sections are based on previously acquired information which is used for analysis and optimization in several areas of described environment.

This dissertation titled Designing Project Business Intelligence focuses on data warehouse in a medium-sized company. The theoretical portion of the thesis describes the topic of data warehouse and dimensional modeling. In the first theoretical chapter, I compare and contrast two approaches to datawarehouse building - Bill Inmon's and Ralph Kimball's. Then, basic terminology used in the field, principles of dimensional modeling and various approaches of database use will be described. Furthermore, the thesis illustrates the role of the Mondrian system as a mediator between the relational database and the OLAP server. Possible uses of the MDX language in working with multidimensional databases are outlined. The theoretical portion of the thesis ends with a description of the applicational interface XMLA, which can be used for facilitation communication between applications and the OLAP server. The practice-oriented portion of the thesis includes a complete design of the Business Intelligence project. The project is divided into the following parts: Feasibility Study, Project Planing, Business Requirements, Design and Development, and Deployment and Maintenance. The entire project operates exclusively on Open Source Software. Consequently, the project shows that small and medium-sized companies can afford to run a fully operating Business Intelligence system.

The primary objective of this work is to investigate the potential of utilizing Hadoop and Amazon Redshift in the Amazon Web Services ("AWS") cloud, in order to design and implement a data warehouse, the efficacy of which will be tested afterwards. Contributions of this work include: documenting the technologies in the AWS cloud in Czech, demonstration of the design and performance tests of the data warehouse and the ETL part. Another considerable benefit is the added value to the company for whom the project was designed, and which is currently using the output of the project.

The present diploma thesis focuses on the subject matter of large data warehouses under the aspect of their sustainable operation and development, seeking to analyze the key factors which influence the operation of data warehouses at large businesses. The thesis is divided into three main sections, preceded by a short theoretical introduction. The first part aims at explaining and illustrating the architecture of data warehouses, with the bulk of this section being devoted to a description of the key components of data warehouse solutions as a whole, and the various available alternatives for their technical implementation. The second section familiarizes the reader with the manner in which data warehouses are managed and operated, discussing the most important operational tasks in individual sub-sections. The final section focuses on working with client tools within the ETL platform of Informatica Powercenter. This work's original contribution lies in the comparison of how the design of individual components expresses itself in the simplicity and quality of routine operations. As a matter of fact, data warehouses can only be operated as conveniently and competently as they were designed and implemented. In this thesis of mine, I primarily draw on my immediate experience and acquired knowledge from data warehouse operations at a large domestic enterprise.

La presente investigación tiene como finalidad la reducción de mermas en una empresa comercializadora de útiles escolares. En el primer capítulo, se dará a conocer el marco teórico necesario para el desarrollo de la propuesta de solución donde se exponen temas de procesos, herramientas lean, cadena de suministros, gestión de almacenes, mermas y distribución de planta. En el segundo capítulo, se analizan los procesos para realizar un diagnóstico y poder identificar los problemas, así como las causas que lo originan. Luego, en el tercer capítulo se realiza la propuesta de solución utilizando diferentes herramientas. Así mismo, se realiza un plan piloto en una tienda modelo. En el cuarto capítulo, se miden los resultados del plan piloto, el impacto económico a través de la determinación de los costos y beneficios que se brindará a la empresa. Finalmente, se expondrán las conclusiones de la propuesta de implementación para el caso de estudio. / The purpose of this research is to reduce waste in a company that sells school supplies. In the first chapter, the theoretical framework necessary for the development of the solution proposal will be announced where issues of processes, lean tools, supply chain, warehouse management, waste and plant distribution are exposed In the second chapter, we analyze the processes to make a diagnosis and identify problems, as well as the causes that originate it. Then, in the third chapter the solution proposal is made using different tools. Theoretical information about data warehouses and business intelligence are projected into design and following process of data warehouse development mainly for marketing data. Importing process of data into a data warehouse and reporting are fully automated.

Las empresas comercializadoras mayoristas se vienen enfrentando a nuevos retos en cuanto al nivel de servicio, el cual es un factor importante y el que determina el nivel de ventas y la rentabilidad de las empresas. Es así que, actualmente, las empresas se rigen a entregar los pedidos a sus respectivos clientes a tiempo, en buen estado y completos. Este documento se centra en la importancia de la gestión de almacenes para las distribuidoras de consumo masivo, ya que son los almacenes los que determinan los costos de operación y productividad de estas. Es así que algunas técnicas innovadoras como el lean warehouse y herramientas de asignación, mejoran las condiciones de trabajo con el objetivo de reducir tiempos muertos y distancias. Se llevó a cabo un piloto de implementación de las herramientas mencionadas en el almacén de una distribuidora mayorista. Como resultado de la investigación se logró la reducción de la distancia recorrida en almacén en un 22%, la reducción de tiempos en el proceso de picking, logrando el tiempo óptimo de entregas y generando un incremento de las ventas efectuadas de 215,720.22 soles. Estos resultados demuestran ser determinantes en el rendimiento de la cadena de suministro (inventario, costo, retraso y riesgo), ya que la clave del éxito para esta industria es satisfacer las necesidades de los clientes en el menor tiempo posible. La presente investigación se justifica en la necesidad de incrementar la productividad dentro de una empresa distribuidora de productos de consumo masivo, mejorando los procesos claves de la misma. Esto con el objetivo de contribuir al crecimiento de la rentabilidad de la empresa. / The wholesale trading companies are facing new challenges in terms of the level of service, which is an important factor which determines the level of sales and profitability of companies. Thus, currently, companies are aimed to deliver orders to their respective customers on time, in good condition and complete. This file focuses on the importance of warehouse management for mass consumption distributors, since it’s the warehouses that determine the operation and productivity costs of these. Thus, some innovative techniques such as the lean warehouse and allocation tools improve working conditions with the aim of reducing downtime and distances. A pilot programme of implementation of the tools mentioned in the warehouse of a wholesale distributor was carried out. As a result of the research, the distance traveled in the warehouse was reduced by 22%, the reduction of times in the picking process, achieving the optimal delivery time and generating an increase in the sales made of 215,720.22 soles. These results prove to be decisive in the performance of the supply chain (inventory, cost, delay and risk), since the key to success for this industry is to satisfy the needs of customers in the shortest possible time. This research is justified in the need to increase productivity within a company that distributes consumption products, improving its key processes. E-handelns omsättning har ökat kraftigt under de senaste åren, och det har satt ökade krav på lagerstyrning och lagerutrymme hos e-handelsföretag. Särskilt mindre e-handelsbolag har utmanats att skala upp verksamheten i takt med ökad försäljning och omsättning. Ett av dessa företag är Hobbyhem vilket säljer diverse artiklar inom hobby och pyssel. Företaget har behövt öka kapaciteten snabbt för att möta ökad efterfrågan vilket har lett till kortsiktiga best-practice lösningar och således en ohållbar struktur att bygga vidare på. En fallstudie på företaget visade att brister i strukturen, där smala gångar i kombination med inkonsekvent lagerhållning av produkter och slumpmässig artikelplacering på lagret gjorde plockrundor ineffektiva. Från en omfattande litteraturstudie togs relevant teori fram inom de identifierade problemområdena. Utifrån fallstudien och litteraturstudien genomfördes fyra simuleringar där fyra olika scenarion testades på fallstudieföretaget. Resultatet visar att det viktigaste är att bredda gångarna för att tillåta medtag av plockvagnen in i gångarna. Vidare visade simulering att den bästa metoden för tilldelning av artiklar till lagerplatser är en class-based storage vilken går ut på att de artiklar som säljer mest frekvent placeras närmast plockdepån. Det är även av stor vikt att hålla en konsekvent hyllstruktur på hela lagret för att utnyttja lagerytan maximalt.

El presente trabajo de investigación se enfoca en desarrollar una mejora en la gestión de almacenes para las medianas empresas comercializadoras, que incluye el maximizar el tiempo del proceso de picking (selección y empaquetado) para obtener una disminución en la ratio de productos devueltos. El conocimiento y aplicación de herramientas Lean Warehousing (SLP, inventarios cíclicos y estandarización de procesos), y el ABC multicriterio como herramienta de análisis, permitirá administrar y gestionar los procesos dentro del almacén. Las exigencias de los clientes respecto de la calidad y entregas a tiempo de los productos son cada vez mayores, lo que exige ser más competitivo en las operaciones, por lo cual se analiza la distribución del almacén y la metodología empleada por los operarios, y así eliminar todo lo que no genera valor, llegar control de los inventarios y redistribuir los productos de acuerdo con su importancia. Finalmente, el sistema de gestión de almacenes propuesto permite una eficiente entrega de pedidos y correcta distribución dentro del almacén, generando un impacto positivo en la viabilidad económica tal como: VAN de S/ 96,296 y una TIR de 104.5%., adicionalmente se logró disminuir las devoluciones de un 14.1% a un 7% y se llegó a un rendimiento de 85% de los operarios. / This research work focuses on developing an improvement in warehouse management for medium-sized trading companies, which includes maximizing the time of the picking process (selection and packaging) to obtain a decrease in the ratio of returned products. The knowledge and application of Lean Warehousing tools (SLP, cyclical inventories and standardization of processes), and the ABC multi-criteria as an analysis tool, will allow to administer and manage the processes within the warehouse. The demands of customers regarding the quality and timely delivery of products are increasing, which requires being more competitive in operations, which is why the distribution of the warehouse and the methodology used by the operators are analyzed, and thus eliminate everything that does not generate value, get inventory control and redistribute products according to their importance. Finally, the proposed warehouse management system allows efficient order delivery and correct distribution within the warehouse, generating a positive impact on economic viability such as: NPV of S / 96,296 and an IRR of 104.5%. Additionally, it was possible to decrease the returns of 14.1% to 7% and a performance of 85% of the operators was reached. / Trabajo de investigación
