The acute effect of a foam rolling and a dynamic stretch warm-up routine on jumping performance

Background: Self-myofascial release is widely used by athletes but the scientific evidence of its supposedly positive effects is limited. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of foam rolling as a warm-up routine in comparison with a dynamic stretching routine and how it may affect the jumping performance among subjects familiar with weight training. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effect of foam rolling vs. a standardized dynamic stretch warm-up routine on jumping performance. Method: Twelve subjects, mean (SD) age 25.1 (± 3.0) years, participated in a randomized, controlled, crossover study. All subjects completed a standardized foam rolling (FR) and a dynamic stretch (DS) warm-up routine on separate days of testing. Squat jump (SJ), counter movement jump (CMJ) and loaded counter movement jump (L-CMJ) all performed bilaterally and unilaterally were conducted to investigate the acute effect of the two warm-up routines. A dependent T-test was used to investigate differences between the warm-up routines. Results: A statistical significant difference in favor of the DS was found for SJ performed bilaterally among males (p = 0.009). The mean (SD) jumping height for SJ FR was 35.6 (± 4.7) cm and for SJ DS 37.9 (± 5.2) cm. The male group also improved more in L-CMJ performed on the right leg with an external load of 54kg after DS compared to FR. No other statistical significant differences were found between the two interventions. A near statistical significant difference was found for SJ performed bilaterally for the total sample (p = 0.057) also in favor of the DS. The mean (SD) jumping height for SJ FR was 29.3 (± 8.7) cm and for SJ DS 30.5 (± 9.9) cm. Conclusion: Findings from this study supports a dynamic stretch warm-up routine prior to performing high intensity bilateral plyometrics instead of a foam rolling warm-up routine. However the data was inconsistent and more research with larger sample sizes is needed to further investigate the possible effects of foam rolling as a warm-up routine on jumping performance performed both bilaterally and unilaterally.

Time Course Changes in Muscle Temperature and Performance Following Active Warm Up in Cool Environments

The effect of active warm up (WU) and passive heating (HP) following WU on muscle temperature (Tm) and performance in cool (10°C) environments was studied. Eight male recreational athletes (29±5 y) with a minimum relative mean VO2peak score of 50mL∙kg-1∙min-1 (58.0±6.3 mL∙kg-1∙min-1) completed two 60-minute sessions in an environmental chamber (9.77˚C, 71%RH). Following 15 minutes of standardized WU on a cycle ergometer, heat was applied to the legs during 30 minutes of inactivity using heated pants in HP but not in control (CON). Core (Tc), skin (Tsk) and muscle temperature, heart rate (HR), and thermal comfort (TC) and sensation (TS) were monitored at 5-min intervals throughout test sessions. Muscle performance was assessed by countermovement (VJ) height measured pre- and post-WU and at 10-, 20-, and 30-minutes following WU, as well as by anaerobic power, capacity, and fatigue measures calculated from a 45-second Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) completed at the end of the 30-minute inactivity phase. WU resulted in similar and significant increases in Tm and VJ from baseline to post-WU (p<0.05). Tsk showed a difference between HP and CON prior to, during, and at the end of WU (p<0.05). Compared to end-WU, Tm was lower in HP and CON at 20-, 25- and 30-minutes of inactivity; however, Tm remained higher in HP at all timepoints following WU compared to CON. This maintenance in Tm during HP was associated with a higher peak power output calculated from WAnT (p<0.05). No differences were seen in VJ performance, TC, or TS following WU (p<0.05). ACUTE EFFECTS OF SELF-INDUCED MYOFASCIAL RELEASE ON FLEXIBILITY, POWER, AND SPEED IN COLLEGE AGE MALES AND FEMALES

In recent years, self-myofascial release has gained popularity as a post-exercise therapeutic technique in regards to alleviating pain or muscle soreness. New developments have led many researchers and practitioners to examine self-myofascial release, in the form of foam rolling, pre-exercise. The effects of foam rolling, in combination with a dynamic warm-up, is not quite understood. Minimal research has been published on this topic. To date, there has been one article that examines how a dynamic warm-up and foam rolling can improve performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if an acute bout of foam rolling in the form of self-myofascial release in addition to a dynamic warm-up could improve performance. Fourteen active male and female participants (N = 14; age: 20.931.44; height: 68.043.21, weight: 80.0922.82, BMI: 26.47 5.89) with no prior experience foam rolling volunteered to engage in this counterbalanced, within-subjects design. Participants engaged in experimental condition groups: a general warm-up (GW) group, a dynamic warm-up (DYN) group, and a foam rolling (FM) group. Following each condition, participants performed a series of performance tests. One-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to compare the effect of the independent variable (group: general warm-up, dynamic warm-up, and foam rolling group) on the dependent variable (scores: flexibility, vertical jump, standing long jump, and sprint scores) to determine if significant differences exist. When the omnibus F-test statistic was significant, pairwise comparisons using Sidak comparisons were performed. The data indicated that the foam rolling group showed significant differences in flexibility and power (specifically in the standing long jump) when compared to a general or dynamic warm-up. Furthermore, no significant differences were found in the vertical jump or the speed test among the three groups. The results suggest that total-body foam rolling session may be valuable for improvements in certain aspects of performance. Implications from this study suggest foam rolling can be used before a workout routine.

An Annotated Guide to Published Horn Warm-Up Routines, 1940-2015

abstract: This project examines over 40 publications consisting of published warm-ups, routines, and materials suitable for daily routines. The books were all written specifically for the horn and published between 1940 and 2015. They are split into periods of twenty years each during this timeframe: 1940-1959, 1960-1979, 1980-1999, and 2000-2015. Included are brief annotations for each of the books which consist of general biographical information on the author, a summary of the material presented in each routine including a breakdown of how much each author covers a set of defined components, and suggestions for which type of student would be best to utilize each routine through an assessment of its strengths. The Effect of Static Stretching and Order of Warm-Up on the Isokinetic Peak Torque of the Knee Extensors

The purposes of these studies were to determine if an acute static stretch influenced isokinetic peak torque (IPT), and to examine if the order in which the warm up routine was performed affected peak knee extension torque. Twenty trained college male students performed maximal isokinetic knee extensions under four conditions: a control consisting of no stretching, a stretch only trial, jog then stretch, and stretch then jog conditions. Each stretch was held for a total volume of 360 s. Measurements were taken on a Biodex System 3 isokinetic dynamometer at speeds of 60º s-1 and 300º s-1. Data were analyzed using t-tests to compare the stretch condition with the control. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between the stretch and the control at 300 º s-1 (p = 0.03 t = 2.42) but not at 60 º s-1 (p = 0.16). A 2 x 3 ANOVA (300 º s-1 x 60 º s-1, and control x stretch then jog x jog then stretch) yielded no significance at either speed (p > 0.05). Conclusions from this study indicate that stretching should not be the sole exercise in a warm-up routine as previous research confirms the decrease in IPT after stretching. Another finding of this study is that the negative effects of stretching can be diminished when combined with an aerobic activity such as jogging prior to performance. Further research is needed to determine the underlying factors that contribute to the post stretch decrease in IPT and the factors that lead to the restoration of force after aerobic activity. Caution is advised since these were controlled tests in a laboratory and results may vary with actual performance.

Effects Of Warm-Ups On Time Trials For Elite Ncaa Division I 800-Meter Middle Distance Runners: Establishing A Priming Warm-Up For Optimum Results In A Peak Performance

This study utilized an experimental design testing low, medium, and high intensity warm-up protocols for NCAA Division I 800-meter male and female middle distance runners to determine which result in optimal outcomes in a peak performance, i.e., 800-meter time trial. Mississippi State University student athletes on the Track and Field Team who compete in middle distance running events participated. Among males, results of the repeated measures ANOVA found no significant difference among the three warm-up protocols for the first 400 meters completed. For females, repeated measures ANOVA results found no significant difference among the protocols for the first 200 meters completed. However, at the completion of the 800-meter time trial, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was seen among both males and females; post hoc analyses indicated that the high intensity warm-up group had a statistically significantly lower (i.e., better) total time than the low intensity warm-up group.

The effects of Foam Rolling and Static Stretching on bilateral forward jumping ability and flexibility of the hamstrings musculature

Background: Foam rolling (FR) is a promising new trend in the world of resistance training, sports and  athletics. It is often used as a warm up activity as a substitute or addition to  stretching modalities such as static stretching (SS). The proposed benefits behind FR is that it can lead to  both acute and chronic increases in performance and flexibility. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two different warm­up intervention protocols  of the hamstrings musculature on: 1) Performance in the bilateral standing long jump 2) Flexibility in a  supine active­knee­extension test. Method: The study consisted of sixteen male participants who were all healthy adult recreational athletes.  The two different interventions were, a) Static Stretching protocol (SS) and b) a Foam Rolling protocol  (FR). These were compared to a baseline warm up (BLWU). The SS consisted of 1 x 30 seconds of active  SS using the lying supine active­knee­extension position after a short warm­up. The FR consisted of 1  bout of 30 seconds of FR of the hamstrings musculature of each leg after a short warm­up. BLWU  consisted of a short warm­up (5 submaximal bilateral standing long jumps). Performance was measured  using a bilateral standing long jump test. Flexibility was measured with a goniometer using a lying supine active ­knee­ extension test. The student’s t­test was used to study differences between and within groups (BLWU, SS, FR). Results: No differences between BLWU and Post­SS (p=0.89) as well as BLWU compared to Post­FR (p=0.86) was detected for performance. However, an increase in flexibility was shown favoring Post­SS over BLWU (p=0.021) as well as Post­FR over BLWU (p=0.045). No significant difference was seen  between changes in the Post­SS and Post­FR groups in either performance or flexibility (p=0.887 and  p=0.944 respectively). Conclusion: It seems that both SS and FR are similarly viable and effective methods for acute increases  in flexibility in the active­knee­extension test without subsequent decreases in performance of the bilateral standing long jump.

Quantitative stress parameters were evaluated for individual tests as the mean value from a large amount of repetition in individually evaluation. Results: Tests proved it is not possible to confirm acute positive influence of dynamic stretching on all assesed parameters in different tests. In terms of average values of different tests a noticeable lower limbs improvement has been emerged at two out of three tests. It is also to consider how subsequent various kinds of warm up exercises can affect the sports performance mentioned above. Furthermore, to use a case study based on selected research methodology to measure the speed of running locomotion after the selected type of warming up. Methodology: A method of literary research is used in the thesis, primarily using foreign literature but Czech literature too, obtained mainly from online databases and subject bibliographies. Also the case study method was used to measure the speed of running locomotion. Results: Conducting literary research has proved that speed sports performance might be greatly affected by the selected method of warming up. Title Acute effect of static and dynamic stretching on vertical jump. Objectives The aim of this thesis is to assess whether it is better to warm up by static or dynamic stretching in order to improve performance in the vertical jump. Methods The first part of this thesis is theoretical and is the basis for measurement, which is described in the second part. The tested set consists of ten women volleyball players. Each player underwent three vertical jump measurements on power plates Kistler, which recorded flight time of the player over the plates. All measurements were evaluated afterwards. Five attempts were recorded in each measurement. Measurements were carried out without stretching, after dynamic stretching and after static stretching. The thesis includes a survey that monitors the perception of the players` performance. Results Results of the total tested set measurement show that inclusion of dynamic stretching during the warm up leads to a slight decline in the physical performance. This decrease presents about 0.92%. Another conclusion of this research is that the inclusion of static stretching to the warm up also results in a slight decrease in the athletic performance.
