Requalificação de waterfronts e sustentabilidade: a operação urbana da Região do Porto do Rio de Janeiro. / Rehabilitation of waterfronts and sustainability: the urban operation for the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro.

Ferrarin, Fernando Cesar Penteado 01 September 2016 (has links)
O adensamento urbano e a prioridade dada à mobilidade otimizam o uso do espaço e infraestrutura, trazendo benefícios concretos para o ambiente urbanizado. / The rehabilitation of degraded and underused urban areas such as waterfronts represents an unique opportunity for sustainable urban development. The Urban Operation for the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro, known as Porto Maravilha, aims to rehabilitate the former port district as a mixed-use zone and promotes sustainability as one of its main guidelines. This work is a case- study that analyzes the main interventions regarding the new configuration of the urban morphology and the new structure of mobility of Porto Maravilha. The approach focuses on the environmental dimension of sustainability, with the intention to provide new perspectives and interpretations on this project, according to Urban Engineering. The results indicate that it relates to the global context, by alignment with the main trends of sustainability in urbanism. The densification and priority given to mobility optimize the use of urban space and infrastructure, leading to consistent benefits for current and future populations. However, the absence of effective enforcement mechanisms or mandatory elements translates public policies on sustainability into merely letters of intent. In the medium term, the political-economic external dynamics will perform a decisive role in the success or failure of this endeavor.

Efforts To Promote Tourism As A Catalyst For Urban Redevelopment In Florida: Insights From The Anthropology Of Tourism And An Annotated Bibliography.

Collins, John F. 14 November 2004 (has links)
Tourism is a major contributor to the global economy and is an agent of cultural change. Tourism has been utilized throughout the United States as an engine of economic renewal in the promotion of redevelopment within many of our most celebrated urban centers. Urban tourism as it is found within Florida is explored. A chapter is dedicated to Tampa, Florida. Anthropology has spent little time or effort in attempting to understand the complexities of urban tourism and what it means for the cities of 21st century. The anthropology of tourism is utilized in exploring the political economy of tourism within urban spaces as they occur in Florida. Employment statistics, development trends and policy matters are presented to aid the reader in understanding the dynamics of urban tourism within Florida. Accompanying this effort on urban tourism is an annotated bibliography of Florida tourism.

Establishing local identity through planning and landscape design in urban waterfront development

Liu, Huirong 10 May 2013 (has links)
In an increasingly globalized world, emphasis on attracting investment, talent and tourists has resulted in similar iconic urban landscapes in cities. This has increased concerns on the reduction or complete loss of local identity along urban waterfronts. This study aimed to develop a set of design guidelines that contribute to the establishment of local identity on urban waterfronts. The research focused on the history and current status of urban waterfront development, globalization impacts on urban landscape, notions of place identity and place making. It defined local identity as one type of place identity and explored the key aspects that foster local identity in waterfront development. A case study was conducted by analyzing these key aspects in a successful waterfront development. From a synthesis of the findings, a set of design guidelines was developed and then tested on an unsuccessful project; recommendations for future improvement were based on the developed guidelines.

Living sites : rethinking the social trajectory of the Tophane area in Istanbul

Pelen Karelse, Övgü January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this research is to account for the life of an industrial site and to show the dynamism of the site by exploring what its trajectory in space and time can tell us about socio-economic and political tendencies occurring during its lifespan. This research will focus on the micro life of a particular industrial site in order to grasp the rhythm of societal change including its cultural and political overtones, and to explore the strategies of transformation of industrial sites in contemporary societies. In addition, this research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the concepts of waterfront regeneration and urban transformation by investigating the life of an industrial site. The objectives of the research are firstly to understand the site life and the rhythm of change of the examined industrial site with the intention of understanding the urban transformation, urban policy and planning. Secondly, to discuss how the site has been transformed, redeveloped and reused through time; and lastly to analyse the roles of various actors involved in the trajectory of the site. In order to support this argument, this research will benefit from inter-disciplinary literature studies. Three main bodies of literature will be put forward; these are waterfront redevelopment, cultural geography, and architectural theory. The dynamic life of the Tophane site in Istanbul is the case study that is analysed in this research. The Tophane site has been, and still is, a very controversial and multi-dimensional site with respect to its use and transformation. Due to its strategic location at the connection point of the Golden Horn and the Bosporus, overlooking the historical peninsula. It has been used for a variety of functions in its history, such as artillery barracks, warehouses, exhibition spaces for the Istanbul Art Biennials, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts as well as cruise port. It has been subject to some of the most controversial urban transformation proposals in Istanbul, both regarding the use of the site as well as the bidding processes associated with these proposals. This PhD will cover the different phases of this site's lifetime from the beginning of the twentieth century until 2014 and investigates the crucial roles played by various actors in its transformation and in the resistance to its transformation. The innovative aspect of the dissertation is that it crosses the boundaries of cultural geography and architectural theory. In addition, the original use of research methods such as thick description, actor network theory, controversy mapping and layering aspires to contribute to architectural studies. Furthermore, the focus on the Tophane site in Istanbul aims to expand the geographical scope of both waterfront redevelopment and cultural regeneration literature. The ultimate contribution of the dissertation is to demonstrate how a thorough analysis of the complexity and the versatile nature of a site, including its changing phases and layers, can lead to a better understanding of the macro scale processes that shape the urban environment.

Funkční změny Vltavských břehů v Praze / Functional changes of Vltava riverbanks in Prague

Brabec, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the functional changes of the banks of the Vltava river in the territory of today's Capital City of Prague. There have been significant changes in the functional use of this area due to large interventions in the bank line and the redevelopment of the embankment. During last 150 years changes are closely monitored. Changes were also made conditional on connecting nearby rural communities to Prague. Theoretical bases are the concepts of shore-side changes in urbanized areas, complemented by examples from the world that serve as a comparative study. Furthermore, the thesis is based on the theory of photography and the iconographic approach, which are essential for this work. The methodology of the thesis is based on the analysis of historical and contemporary photographs and information, on field research and vectorization of historical maps, where the course of the flow is monitored in four time periods (the mid-19th century until present). The work captures functional changes of banks in text form, as images and fundamental changes in tables. Part of the work is also a web application, where the changes in cartographic, picture and text form are again accessible to the public. Key words Vltava river, Prague, riverbank, waterfront

Rahman, Mohammed Anisur January 2010 (has links)
Abstract   This papers aims to discuss the potentiality of tourism and recreation in Stockholm by developing its waterfronts. Waterfronts neighbourhood of south side of Kungsholmen has been taken as a case study which has lots of potentiality to develop in terms of tourism and recreations. Urban waterfronts planning and redevelopment is currently a civic interest which consists of both challenges as well as opportunities. It has adapted different significant in different urban cultures. Waterfronts by the side of Kungsholmen are unique and valuable resources of Stockholm. However, most of the waterfronts recreation grounds are not well designed and located or not properly linked with the nearby tourist destinations. The goal of the study is to create good quality recreation space along the waterfronts of the south side of Kungsholmen and connect them with the central tourist spots of Gamlastan. The study has done through literature reviews of overseas examples to formulate the performance criteria that help to evaluate the existing quality of waterfront recreation development and to formulate the urban design guidelines. The study will take a macro level study on the entire waterfronts area.

Město dvou nábřeží / City of two waterfronts

Falathová, Katarína Unknown Date (has links)
The Bratislava phenomenon of waterfront diversity is an European rarity. With my work, I would like to support this duality and show its potential. I have highlighted a few principles which, in my opinion, are the problem of the not very functioning symbiosis of the waterfronts. Bratislava as a city suffers from large number of uncertain spaces, which prevents any continuity. The left waterfront is almost entirely built up and you can see some continuity there. The right waterfront is full of empty unidentified areas, parking lots and old buildings. The international cycle route holds this area together. The continuous forest becomes a set of fragments. The presence of man could be the basic of connection. The addition of features and interventions could increase the interest of people. A social space would be created, the center would be extended to the opposite waterfront and the connection with Petržalka would be realistic gold for the future. The solution could be to create several stops along the cycle path. Each space under the bridge has its own charakter. Today, all these spaces are without presence of man. Every bridge could get its own identity by creating space suitable for humans. Together, the bridges will create and adventure route on the right waterfrot with a lot of opportunities to socialize, entertain, educate, experience some culture events or do some sports. The cycle route passes through the several other interesting places to stop. The number of visitors will increase by adding use and the continuity would be created by man himself.

Sustainable Waterfront Revitalization: Baltimore, San Francisco, and Seattle

Miller, Lindsey L.M. 01 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The urban waterfront areas of the United States have grown increasingly neglected and derelict due to changes in traditional industrial uses and their physical severance from the downtown core. A revived interest in urban living has brought downtown property values up, including waterfront areas, and has jump-started a movement towards waterfront revitalization. In an effort to understand the specific characteristics that make some waterfront revitalization projects more sustainable over time than others, this paper employed a case study approach. Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, San Francisco, and Seattle’s Central Waterfront were selected for analysis based on three specific perspectives: recreation; development; and tourism. Using criteria determined from the literature review in conjunction with key player interviews and documentary evidence, the three case study waterfronts were analyzed for their ability to sustain revitalization. The results indicate that waterfronts must provide a balance and mix of uses, assimilate with the surrounding city, provide connections between attractions and with the city and region, continuously reinvent themselves, provide attractions that draw both locals and tourists, and have a clear identity. These findings, while quite broad, are intended to provide a foundation that will be relevant to any city undertaking new waterfront revitalization projects.
