Mitos e identidades nos filmes justiça vermelha, turistas e gran torino

Scafuto, Isabel Cristina January 2011 (has links)
This study mainly intends to analyze the ideological, mythological and identitary aspects of the Americans. It verifies how the contemporary American mythology is adapting itself to the historical transformations it has been passing through as well, generated by one more global crises. Besides, it also considers Hollywood movies as mythological narratives. Three Hollywood films have been selected for this study: Red Corner (1995), Turistas (2006) and Gran Torino (2008). They were used as basis to the purposed analysis. In this way, the focus here is on the representation of the American citizen in each film, his speech, his relationship with the Other (the non-American), in the three different situations presented in this study / Submitted by Jovina Laurentino Raimundo (jovina.raimundo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T16:36:33Z No. of bitstreams: 1 103130_Isabel.pdf: 485928 bytes, checksum: c6e98311ec3b8c2042323e3a7045d689 (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Gheovana Figueiredo (gheovana.figueiredo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:12:54Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 103130_Isabel.pdf: 485928 bytes, checksum: c6e98311ec3b8c2042323e3a7045d689 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-01-17T17:12:54Z (GMT).

Discipleship in the fourth gospel

Van der Merwe, Dirk Gysbert 01 October 2012 (has links)
In principle discipleship is the continuation of the mission of Jesus through the imitation (hupodeigma) of Jesus' way of life. This implies that his disciples will live according to the will of God, for Jesus was the personification of the will of God. The disciples of Jesus are therefore the locus of the manifestation of God -- their way of life must indicate the presence of Jesus (and God) in the world in a different mode. Discipleship indicates a personal relationship between Jesus and his disciples which is modelled/based on the Father-Son relationship which is elucidated by the agency model. A Descent-Ascent Schema forms the setting for this concept, with the Johannine dualism as the determining factor for this schema. Thus the 'agency' motif constitutes the structure for discipleship in the Fourth Gospel with a revelatory-salvivic assignment. The revelatory aspect concerns the disciples' relationship towards God and the salvivic aspect their directedness towards the world. The disciples have to live a holy life through which God will be revealed and which will enable them to accomplish their mission in the world so that the world may become saved. This study concentrates on the theological perspective of discipleship with some reference to the characteristics of discipleship. / Thesis (DD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / New Testament Studies / unrestricted

Deliberative Democracy: John Dewey and Alasdair MacIntyre

Lee, Chanhee 01 June 2021 (has links)
Authoritarianism is on the rise across the world and intriguingly in the United States, known as the democratic laboratory. Political theorists and activists inquire into this contradictory political phenomenon in the United States, but their inquiries are fruitless. This dissertation finds that they uncritically conceive democracy as a mechanism of governance. As such, this narrow conception hampers their intelligence for political inquiries into the surge of authoritarianism in America. This dissertation discusses why and how the current political phenomenon occurs and suggests a moral method to pursue the quest for democratic values. This method allows inquirers to successfully address the crisis of democracy. This dissertation appeals to John Dewey’s vision of deliberative democracy, comparing and contrasting it with Alasdair MacIntyre’s communitarianism-oriented political theory. It finds that just as the Deweyan democratic vision does, MacIntyre’s political vision of democracy, too, emphasizes citizens’ participation in the political activities of decision-making and policy formulation. For MacIntyre, deliberative and participatory citizens are engaged in small group meetings to resolve their social and political issues. However, his communitarian method falls short of inspiring inquirers who wish to establish meaningful hypotheses to overcome the crisis of democracy: the idea of value plurality that is deemed essential for the political hypotheses is negated to a substantial degree by Thomist humanism held in his later works. MacIntyre’s skeptical attitude toward the methodology of democracy fundamentally based on liberalism and empirical naturalism inhibits political inquiries to discover and apply methods required to resolve the existing political situation in the U.S. By contrast, Dewey provides an appropriate array of philosophical ideas concerning deliberative democracy based on cooperative intelligence for political inquirers. With Dewey’s thought-provoking philosophical ideas, they are prepared to address their recently revived interest in authoritarianism in politics. They open a path towards a way of life that promotes authentic participation and deliberation in public affairs to tackle complex policy issues and bring out human flourishing. On this moral and social path, people demolish authoritarianism. Democratic hope is no longer an unattainable dream.

Žalingas gyvenimo būdas, kaip tapatumo konstravimo priemonė: tabako vartojimo atvejis / Addictive way of life as a measure for identity statement: tobacco consumption case

Tamkevičiūtė, Monika 12 June 2012 (has links)
Fox, N.J. (2002) analyses how postmodern social theories about risk and body can help us to understand why human behaviour – watching from a professional view – often does not avoid addictive way of life. The author looks at the behaviour in the context of people’s lives. That gives an opportunity to think of risks from another perspective when looking at the behaviour of people like at “experimentation.”‘. These are reflexive actions, which they take as part of expression of their life and identity. According to Z. Bauman (1992: 76) characters constantly face ethical issues and are forced to choose among equally-well reasoned (or equally-not-reasoned) ethnic precepts under conditions of pos-modernity. Choice is always an acceptance of responsibility and due to this reason it has a nature of moral action. It is becoming clearer that selection of the way of life in the context of local and global mutual relations causes certain moral problems, which, in the opinion of Giddens, must not be avoided. Under the conditions of modernity, alterable “I” must be investigated and constructed as part of the reflexive process, during which changes are associated with social ones (Giddens, A. 2000: 19, 49). As S. Janne (2009: 469) states that while many researches related with smoking have performed and important risk factors related with consumption of tobacco have been established, very little attention is paid to social significance of smoking within the context of... No. of bitstreams: 1 PPGCOM Tese Paulo RF Cunha.pdf: 6248280 bytes, checksum: acaf4627860c7d7335eca120b06aad90 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-13 / This thesis aims to understand the context and the articulations related to the consumption of model images of a lifestyle pattern – named as American way of life –, through the dissemination of mass communication, in particular, of North American cinema in the 1950‟s. Such mediatization of images made sense to viewers and adhered to the common sense of United States citizens. However, in parallel with the pedagogical action of the diffusion of said model, contradictions and contextual factors that did not conform to pattern and which continued to be presented in that society – as well as in the films – have dialogued with diverse portions of the population and have generated verisimilitude to the referenced displayed on the screen. In this way, after the film analysis of production launched in the aforementioned decade, this project will have a responsibility to understand the process, the elements, the strategies and the plural representations implemented by film industry in order to include in the films features of the model and non-model – after all, making sense is a way of working on the order to of customer loyalty. The research carried out through the contemporaneousness of the theme is justified, since a significant part of the cultural and media production of the United States in the 20th century crossed frontiers and reached the world, taking with it the image of a country and of exemplary citizens whose form of living should be a reference – as it still is in certain instances.
