The load carrying unit of articulated haulers : Analysis of the welded connections

Lindholm, Martin, Uçar, Metin, Dzanic, Nermin January 2009 (has links)
The work presented in this master thesis is about the finite element analysis of the welded connections in load carrying unit of the articulated hauler, Volvo A40E. It was performed in cooperation with Volvo CE in Braås. The task was to provide the company with an appropriate solution to reduce the amount of weld used on the front part of the load carrying unit. To accomplish this, a series of analyses utilising CATIA and ANSYS was performed on both existing and adjusted (potential replacement) welded connections. The analyses brought to light the fact that the fatigue resistance of welded connections significantly depends on the penetration depth. In other words, reinforcing the welded connections by deeper penetration is more beneficial than providing support from outside through thicker weld. It was concluded that applying adjusted welds lessens both the production time and cost. Nevertheless, since the welds on the load carrying unit are correlated; more extensive studies covering all welds should be carried out to estimate the impacts of similar replacements.

Steel pipes, used in the oil and gas industry in prospection and exploration activities, are often subjected to cyclic loading during their transportation (transit fatigue) and during their service life. Considering this, these steel pipes must have excellent structural integrity in order to avoid premature failure by fatigue mechanisms. However, the HFIW manufacturing process, widely used by the industry, involves mechanical forming and welding and, therefore, defects are inherently present in the finished products, remarkably an interface between the edges of the steel sheets that are welded into tubes. In this work it has been investigated how the HFIW manufacturing process can reduce the fatigue resistance of API 5CT N80 type Q steel tubes and lead to a mechanical anisotropy of the finished product. To keep the specimens characteristics closer to the real steel pipes, axial fatigue tests have been performed with round specimens which had their thickness equal to the thickness of the walls of the pipes from which they had been taken from. It has been developed also a device and a method to test small length sections of steel tubes, which have shown potential to be used in the future as a new methodology for the study of fatigue in steel pipes. The results of the axial fatigue tests (carried out to compare the welded joint to a position situated 90° from it) indicate that the welded joint can act as a stress raiser and contributes to reduce the fatigue resistance of the steel pipes, in a inversely proportional relationship with the increasing of the applied dynamic loading. It has been observed also that some defects, which result from the manufacturing process, can act as points for the nucleation of fatigue cracks and, for this, they should not be present in the manufactured product. Tensile tests, metallographic analysis, fractography study and microhardness tests had been carried out to complement the fatigue tests results.

Přemostění řeky Svitavy a tratě ČD v Blansku / Bridge crossing over Svitava river and railway track in Blansko

Smělíková, Petra January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the Diploma Thesis is elaboration of study of bridge crossing over the Svitava river and ČD railway track in Blansko. It concerns a five-pole steel beam road bridge with through-span which carries road of the third category. The static system of the construction is solved as solid-web beam of 1.3 meters height which is in three middle spans reinforced by truss construction with top chord and system of diagonals without verticals. The height of the main beam where reinforced by trusswork is 4.75 meters. The width of spans in the road axis is 18.5 + 30.525 + 44.4 + 30.525 + 18,5 metres. The bridge deck consists of steel cross beams bonded with reinforced concrete slab of 200 millimeters of thickness. The drive-through width of the roadway is 7.0 meters. The bridge is fitted with right-sided walkway placed on steel cantilevers. The walk-through width of the walkway is 3.0 meters. Material used is S355 Steel, C30/37 Concrete and S460 Steel which is used for marginal spans of the bridge. Load-bearing construction is assessed in compliance with current technical requirements laid down by European Directives, so called “Eurocodes”. The calculation of inner powers is performed using the Scia Engineer 2013.1 software.
