Design of Shallow Wells for Drainage by Pumping, Lewiston Area, UtahPearson, Gregory L. 01 May 1949 (has links)
After approximately 25 years of using open drains in the Lewiston Area, Utah, the water table has not changed appreciably from what it was in 1921 when Hart and Adams (4) conducted their drainage investigations. It is still only about three feet below the ground surface. This is not effective drainage, meeting neither of the two primary drainage requirements of an arid or semi-arid agricultural region, namely; preventing an accumulation of excessive water within the depth of soil required for optimum growth of plant root systems, and maintaining the water table at a depth below the ground surface greater than the maximum height capillary water can rise, carrying any harmful salts that may be present in solution.

A Home Beautification Project Developed by the Art Club of the Travis Elementary School in Mineral Wells, TexasShipman, Bonita L. 08 1900 (has links)
For three years the writer has worked with children from a section in Mineral Wells, Texas, in which home environments were unnecessarily bad. They offered none of the wholesome stimuli for growth and development that homes should give. The houses were drab and cheerless, and the grounds were neglected, often grown up in weeds or cluttered with trash. Through its members, made up of sixth and seventh grade children of Travis Elementary School and including children from the affected homes, plans and procedures were formulated for improving homes, and the interest and cooperation of the parents were secured in extending the improvements over the area. By this plan the writer hoped that life might be made more satisfying for these people as a result of improved surroundings.

Elementary teachers' perceptions, practices, and curriculum needs related to nutrition education and physical activity in Wells County, IndianaKnox, Francoise A. January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and knowledge of elementary school teachers related to nutrition and physical activity. The information will be used to develop, implement, and evaluate the school-based component of a program entitled "Operation Wellness" in Wells County, Indiana. The primary focus of this study was to determine if teachers needed further training in nutrition and physical fitness concepts and to assess their value of the inclusion of nutrition education and physical activity into their curriculum.A 58-question web-based Teachers' Physical Activity and Nutrition (TPAN) survey was adapted from an instrument created by the Montana Department of Health. The web-link for the survey was forwarded by the principals of the four elementary schools in Wells County to all 100 elementary teachers employed in the county's public schools. Sixty-four of the 100 teachers (64% response rate) responded. The number of years teaching experience ranged from 1 to 37 years. Slightly more than three-quarters (77.6%; n=42) of the teachers reported including nutrition in their curriculum; of these, 83% reported including less than 10 hours per year . Over one-third of the respondents (38%) thought they could teach nutrition, yet only 12% thought they could teach physical fitness, without any additional training. Most teachers wanted ideas to integrate nutrition (75.5%) and PE (93%) into their classroom curriculum. Over half (56%) of the teachers reported having had some type of formal nutrition training. There was no difference in the hours of nutrition education included in the curriculum by those with formal training. The majority of teachers surveyed indicated a 2-hour in-service for nutrition education and physical activity education would be the most desirable option for additional training. Findings from this study can be generalized to communities with similar demographic information to determine the potential needs of the educators. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

An assessment of the anthropometric status and self-reported nutritional intake and physical activity level of students in fourth, sixth, and eighth grades in Wells County, IndianaDelagrange, Susan L. January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional practices, physical activity level, and anthropometric measurements of students in grades 4, 6, and 8 in Wells County, IN. The sample included all students enrolled in these grades in the fall of 2002. Parental consent to complete the School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) survey used to collect food and activity practices and to measure heights and weights was obtained for 670 of the 1,248 students. Individuals were classified into weight groups using the CDC growth charts. Thirty-eight percent of all students were "at risk for overweight" or were "overweight." Students reported spending 3.3 hours of screen time per day. Males consumed more grains and legumes, and participated in more physical activities, than females. Normal weight students consumed more grains and dairy products than overweight students. There were few statistically significant differences by weight classification. Programs that encourage increasing physical activity, decreasing screen time, and making healthier food choices should be emphasized in this community. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Relaxation dynamics in photoexcited semiconductor quantum wells studied by time-resolved photoluminiscenceZybell, Sabine 16 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
