Perceived Work-related Factors and Turnover Intention : A Case Study of a South Korean Construction Company

Purpose – Employee turnover entails considerable costs and is a major problem for the construction industry. By creating an extensive framework, this study aims to examine whether perceived work-related factors affect turnover intention in South Korean construction companies. Research design – The paper is based on the results of a questionnaire of 136 employees that was conducted and provided by a Korean construction company. Research hypotheses were tested via correlation analyses. The most influencing work-related factors, as well as differences among job levels, were determined by multiple regression analyses. Findings – Communication, immediate leaders, organizational commitment, and organizational pride substantially affect turnover intentions. All of these factors can be considered as relational factors. The most influencing factors differ among job levels. Discussion/practical implications – Immediate leaders should be aware of their role in retaining employees and enhance communication, organizational commitment and pride. This study shows how the importance of certain variables differs for groups of employees. Theoretical implications/limitations– This study is based on a sample of employees from a Korean construction company. Therefore, the generalizability of the findings has to be tested. Future research should test the proposed framework with other factors or resources. Originality/value – This study shed light on the turnover subject in the South Korean construction industry. It shows that different factors can influence turnover intention among job levels. A framework was created, which is based on 16 work-related factors including organizational factors, HRM practices and job attitudes.

Musculoskeletal Pain among Health Care Staff : Riskfactors for Pain, Disability and Sick leave

<p>The present thesis is based on four empirical studies concerning risk factors related to musculoskeletal pain (MSP), disability, and sick leave among three non-clinical samples of health care staff. Initially, in Study I, cognitive, behavioural and environmental factors related to MSP of nurses' aides<b> </b>were explored. An experimental design including baseline, intervention and follow-ups among 29 nurses' aides<b> </b>working in a home for the elderly was used to evaluate effects of a workplace intervention based on cognitive behaviour (CB)- and conventional, symptom reduction principles. In Study II, a cross-sectional and correlational design was applied. A self-administered questionnaire was used to describe and investigate the relationship between risk factors and development of persistent pain, sick leave and long sick leave among 914 municipal health care staff. In Study III and IV, a longitudinal design was used among 200 registered nurses (RN) working in a county hospital to describe and predict pain, disability and sick leave. Data collection involved two self-administered questionnaires covering: 1) work and personal factors, pain, disability and sick leave at baseline and 2) valued life dimensions at baseline. The results showed that MSP was common among the staff. Study I showed positive effects among nurses' aides<b> </b>receiving the CB principles related to MSP compared with nurses' aides receiving the conventional principles. In Study II, pain severity and expectations to be working in 6 months were associated with persistent MSP and sick leave, respectively. In Study III, pain, disability and sick leave at baseline were the strongest predictors of pain, disability and sick leave at the three-year follow-up. In Study IV, the findings support the notion that individual values in different life domains are possible predictors of pain and disability. </p>

A quantitative descriptive cross sectional study design was used amongst the administrative staff at the University of The Western Cape, South Africa. Data collection was carried out with the help of a questionnaire which was administered by the researcher in person. Data was analysed with both descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS and SAS for windows. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis was done. The results of this study revealed a very high prevalence of work related neck pain amongst university administrative staff. </p>

Sickness Absence in Sweden : Its relation to Work, Health and Social Insurance Factors

Background: The high levels of sickness absence and disability pensioning experienced during the 1990's and 2000's have become both socially as well as financially burdensome for society. Sickness absence implies a costly loss of production for society and large groups of individuals are risking to become marginalised on the labour market. Sickness absence is both a public health and an economic problem. Thus from both a human approach as well as from an economic perspective it is urgent to increase knowledge about what influences individual behaviour when it comes to sickness absence and return to work. Objectives: The overall aim of the thesis is to elucidate the decisive factors for explaining sickness absence. Three different aspects of sickness absence were considered, i.e. factors leading to sickness absence, factors preventing sickness absence and factors leading back to work ability and work when being sickness absent. This is done using a frame of reference involving broadly defined areas of work, health and social insurance related factors. Material and methods: Study I analyzes the outcome of unemployed sick-listed individuals. A total of 280 individuals from the county of Värmland were followed through register data between the years 2000 to 2001. Linear and logistic regression models were used to analyze the occurrence of short and long term economic incentives. Study II has a longitudinal design and explores determinants of return to work. Sick-listed individuals with a stress-related psychiatric diagnosis from the county of Värmland were analyzed over a period of three years (2000-2003) using logistic regression. The data comprised 911 individuals. Study III is a cross-sectional study using questionnaire data from the county of Värmland from year 2004. A total of 3123 persons either working or being self employed were analyzed on determinants of work presence through logistic regression. Study IV had a cross-sectional design and used questionnaire data from five counties in central Sweden. The data, from 2004, comprised 10536 individuals being employed, i.e. not self-employed, and with self reported physical and mental medical conditions. Logistic regression was mainly used in the analysis and the focus was on risk factors for long term sickness absence. Study V comprises cross-sectional data retrieved at three separate occasions between 1991 and 1994. It includes 8839 individuals from five counties in western Sweden with sickness absence spells over 60 days. The data was analysed through bi-variate probit regression with a focus on effects of vocational rehabilitation on return to work. Results: The results from study I were interpreted as that both short and long term economic incentives matter for the outcome of sickness absence through the interaction of different insurance systems. The principal findings from study II was that age, gender and factors implying less favourable health characteristics and thereby lower work capacity, reduce probabilities of returning to work after long term sickness absence. Considering study III determinants of work presence were found to vary between sexes and whether the determinants were counteracting long or short term sickness absence. Factors interpreted as job control counteracted short term absence. Sense of coherence was found to be an important determinant of work presence for women. In study IV long term sickness absence was found to be related to the level of ill-health. Moreover it was concluded that work environment factors as job strain, job satisfaction, physical work environment were important factors for explaining sickness absence in a population with impaired health. The results from study V indicated that vocational rehabilitation is a potentially effective instrument for improving the individual's work ability and chances of return to work. That no signs of prioritizing selection of rehabilitation participants to those likely to return to work with or without rehabilitation measures, i.e. "managerial creaming", were found was also considered as important results. Conclusions: This thesis shows that we need different models and approaches to improve knowledge about the various aspects of sickness absence as entry into absence, return to work or into disability retirement. It also has the implications that sickness absence behaviour can be influenced. Largely depending on what long term path is chosen for welfare policy at the political level it should be acknowledged that other means, improving working conditions and promoting rehabilitation rather than reducing benefit levels and narrowing the eligibility criteria for the insurance benefits are at hand.

The aim of this study was to examine how police patrol officers experience different work-related factors and how they impact their organisational commitment. Organisational commitment in this study is based on the work by Meyer and Allen, which previous research has shown to be impactful for police officers’ intentions to leave their jobs. Different work-related factors, such as job satisfaction, work values, heavy workloads and perceived organisational support have also been linked with commitment. Combined with a lack of Swedish studies this motivated the execution of the present study. The data was collected using four semi-structured interviews with patrol officers. The interviewed patrol officers mentioned a variety of work-related factors that could act as facilitating or inhibiting for their commitment. Some factors were mentioned as unanimously positive, such as work variety or colleagues. One of the most important findings was the discovery of a previously unexplored topic regarding material- and personnel resources. The patrol officers that mentioned material resources described their experiences of an unfair distribution of the resources, while the experiences with personnel resources were divided. The findings have partially aligned with previous international research, and an important implication is the importance of an individual perspective in the accommodation of job-related characteristics. It is therefore important for the Swedish Police Authority to account for individual needs and preferences. There is also a need for further Swedish studies that examine police officers’ commitment that can add to the existing international research base, as well as potentially discovering additional factors that can affect their commitment. / Denna studie syftade att undersöka hur poliser i yttre tjänst upplever att deras engagemang påverkas av olika arbetsrelaterade faktorer. Begreppet engagemang utgår i denna studie från Meyer och Allens commitment, som i tidigare forskning visats vara betydande för polisers vilja att stanna kvar i yrket. Olika arbetsrelaterade faktorer, som till exempel arbetstillfredsställelse, värderingar, arbetsbelastning och upplevt organisatoriskt stöd, har även visats ha ett samband med engagemang. Detta i kombinationen med en avsaknad av svenska studier motiverade utförandet av denna studie. Forskningsdatan samlades in med hjälp av fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer med poliser i yttre tjänst. Från dessa intervjuer nämnde informanterna ett flertal arbetsrelaterade faktorer som kunde agerade främjande eller hämmande för deras engagemang. Vissa faktorer som variation i arbetet eller kollegor benämndes enhetligt som positiva. Ett av de viktigaste resultaten var upptäckten av ett tidigare outforskat tema rörande materiella- och personella resurser. De informanter som uttryckte sig angående materiella resurser upplevde att dessa var orättvist fördelade, medan upplevelserna kring personella resurser vad tvådelade. Resultaten har delvis gått i linje med existerande internationell forskning, och en viktig följd är vikten av ett individbaserat perspektiv i anpassningen av arbetets egenskaper. Det är därför viktigt för Polismyndigheten att beakta individens behov och preferenser. Dessutom ses ett behov att ytterligare svenska studier som undersöker polisers engagemang som kan underbygga den redan existerande internationella forskningen samt potentiellt upptäcka nya faktorer som kan påverka polisers engagemang.

Factors influencing burnout among healthcare professionals at selected hospitals in the Ehlanzeni District, South Africa

Burnout is a major problem affecting healthcare professionals nationwide and abroad. When employees experience burnout, it becomes difficult to remain productive at work since this starts to impact negatively on their occupational functioning. Although studies have been done on burnout, very little is known about factors that influence burnout among healthcare professionals. Knowledge around the concept of burnout and accompanying risk factors is vital for early detection and intervention. The study aimed to explore on the factors that influence burnout among healthcare professionals at selected hospitals in Ehlanzeni District, South Africa. A qualitative research approach using phenomenological research design was used for the study. A sample was chosen from the target population by means of convenient sampling. The total number of participants was determined by a rapid assessment test which was used to screen burnout among the professionals. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview guide. The data collected was analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings show that burnout is influenced by a number of different factors (workload, financial problems, emotional exhaustion, poor working relationships, lack of social support, and experience/number of years working at the hospital and personality type. In addition, most healthcare professionals are vulnerable to burnout while some are experiencing it. Also, there are currently no adequate strategies/initiatives put in place to prevent burnout. / NRF
