Participatory workshops: hands-on planning for sustainable schools

Poirier, Marcella 06 January 2009 (has links)
In this exploration, participatory planning workshops are used to implement the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) initiative in a grade six class in Winnipeg. The approach is an effective student-centered strategy that meets the needs of children with a range of learning abilities. The benefits of participatory planning workshops for students with special needs emerged as a key success of the process. Grounded in the principles of community engagement, this document connects children’s rights to citizenship with the need to engage children in planning for sustainable development. Semi-structured interviews were integral to understanding the unique needs of the participant class. Challenges that emerged during the parental consent and student assent process are examined and strategies for future interdisciplinary collaborations are identified. An extensive literature review explores the emergence of youth participation in planning and a range of best practices for engaging children in participatory student-led processes. This research investigates international strategies for implementing the ESD initiative and considers emergent best practices at student, institutional and government levels. Schools are examined as components of community infrastructure that influence neighbourhood design and shape development. As school infrastructure ages and school facilities are challenged to become more sustainable, engaging with school communities in planning, design, renovation or building will be an important skill for planning professionals. Developing the necessary knowledge, skills and values to engage children in planning processes is illustrated as an integral component of this process.

EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COMMITTED ACTION AND PROCRASTINATION

Legaspi, David Nathaniel 01 May 2017 (has links)
Procrastination has been a concept that has recently gained attention. Current research has provided data that suggests there is a positive relationship between committed action (goal setting) and procrastination (Gagnon, Dionne, & Pychyl, 2016). This study had collected data from self-report only using a procrastination scale that has been globally validated (Steel, 2010). Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) interacts with a person’s psychological flexibility, which can be described as the ability to contact the present moment and then adapt to changes in that moment (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 2011). Committed action is just part of the six components that make up ACT. Committed action as a concept is concerned with the goals we take on a daily basis that bring us closer to our values. It stands to reason, that the more a person commits to these actions, the less they might procrastinate. The current study extends the existing literature by exploring the possible effect committed action (goal setting) sessions may have on the relationship between procrastination and committed action by examining discussion question turn in across two groups. The outcomes of this analysis may lend to the literature concerning developing a more effective classroom setting (Bijou, 1970). The current study’s purpose is then to increase the level of understanding we have concerning procrastination through a committed action intervention.

This study was accomplished to investigate the development of the learner autonomy inserted into the methodology of Learning Workshops, according to autonomy criteria proposed by Paiva (2006). First of all, we sought to rescue from a focus group of students, their memories in guided testimonials by a script of questions. The research directed attention to analysis of the evidence of autonomy presented in the speech shifts of the interviewed group, students immersed for three years in the Learning Workshops. Next, we interviewed other group of students, beginners in the methodology, making a comparison with the found evidence in the speech shifts in both groups. The analysis of the data showed us that the students notice the social and individual dimensions more and their relationship with the learning process. The results presented in the first focus group demonstrated that the methodology of Learning Workshops seem to have contributed to more mature and independent young students while the younger ones still have a discursive perspective which makes it difficult the identification about major parameters concerning the student autonomy.

The alcoholic has long been seen only by their symptoms, their dynamics and their destructive disease, regardless of its subjective. The care guidelines proposed by public policies are focused on medication, on the relief of clinical symptoms, restricted to the abstinence and not taking into account the subject’s psychic relationship with alcohol. This paper proposes a discussion on a proposal for a comprehensive care to alcoholic subjects, which adopts the therapeutic workshops as an instrument to implement their contractuality network. Thus, we resort to the psychoanalysis as the theoretical foundation, and to the intercessor method as a specific directive of knowledge generation to understand the alcoholic as a psychic subject – its significance to the drug object – and social – as the product and the producer of its social and affective relations. This methodology allows us to consider the wishes and needs of the subjects, their decisions toward their everyday problems; as a generator of knowledge, their starring role in their own life, their actions and the responsibility for their treatment as well as the possibility of changing the reality of which they are part. This study is based on the analysis of an alcoholic subject, assisted in a mental health institution. It discusses the workshops as therapeutic proposals to treat the alcoholic subjects, aiming to develop a project of an extended-clinic which adopts actions in social contractualism networks, through strategies of Psychosocial Treatment

Rita de Cássia Francisco 23 November 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is about railway workshops, based on a case study entitled \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\" [Mogiana Railway Workshops] of the Mogiana Railway and Navigation Company, which was established in the city of Campinas, Brazil, in the early 20th century. This discussion is classified as a study in industrial heritage and is intended as a contribution toward the recognition, analysis and, most importantly, the preservation of what remains of the railway\'s architecture in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The period of conception of the ideas, design and construction of the workshops, with the gradual implementation of its many different buildings, extended from 1897 to 1908, and created a veritable industrial complex at its central yards in Campinas, out of which the entire railway operated. Using several different documentary sources, the dissertation represents an investigation into guidelines that were internationally recognized during the period when the workshops were constructed, and also shows how these guidelines were adapted in terms of Brazilian reality. By studying the \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\", it became possible to verify the repercussion of these standards in determining the industrial plant that the company built, specifically in relation to the decisions concerning the designs and concepts. In addition, based on institutional documents of the Mogiana Company itself, especially reports issued by the senior management, and field visits, the author seeks to analyze the various components of the complex such as the generator, the locomotive section, the freight and passenger cars section, the foundry and the roundhouse from the perspective of their functionality and operationality. The construction techniques used, the formal arrangements and stylistic compositions, and the changes implanted during its existence are also described. The resulting discussions bring up other possibilities for studying the railroad buildings, also seen as a production complex and, consequently, a workplace.

In our research experience in / with the audiovisual language other ways to spell a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Campinas - SP , from a workshop creating videos with young residents of that place . In this workshop we bring the poetry of Manoel de Barros to propose creative contaminations between languages ( written / videographic ) , our bet is to deal with the image beyond its informative , communicative and illustration condition , is also a bet displacement of thought space that abbreviate the neighborhood at representations of the periphery by the lack cliché . The perceptions of station commissioners of Waterberg District regarding the suicide prevention workshops targeted at police officers

Mashela, Sehlakwana Asnath 05 December 2012 (has links)
Appendices A-D were not provided by the author. The goal of the study was to explore the perceptions of the station commissioners of Waterberg District regarding the Suicide Prevention Workshops targeted at police officers. The study was conducted with the station commissioners of Waterberg District in Limpopo. The population in this study was composed of 15 station commissioners who were regarded as the sample due to the fact that the population is small. The research approach used in the applied study was a qualitative approach. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from the station commissioners in order to uncover their perceptions regarding the Suicide Prevention Workshops. A theoretical background about suicide in general and police suicide was provided through a literature study. In the literature study the background information about factors contributing towards police suicide were indicated, together with methods used to commit suicide. Causes of suicide in general as compared to those of police members, were also clarified. The focus in the literature was also on gender whereby an indication was mentioned about who exactly are at risk of committing suicide. The attitude of police officers and the society’s expectations and perceptions regarding police members has been discussed. The empirical study focused on the perceptions of station commissioners of Waterberg District in Limpopo regarding the Suicide Prevention Workshops targeted at police officers. A semi-structured one-on-one interview was held with each station commissioner on individual basis where by questions were asked about his or her perception of the Suicide Prevention Workshops. The findings of the study revealed that station commanders appreciate the role played by social workers, chaplains and psychological services in presenting suicide prevention programmes to police officers. They indicated that at some point they fail to nominate police officers to attend the workshops because some of the subordinates are not cooperative and they might even submit sick notes in order to be excused from attending. It was also reported that if there is a shortage of personnel due to other core business of SAPS, police officers might not be nominated. Based on the findings of the study, conclusions and recommendations were made with regard to how the suicide prevention program and workshops can be improved in SAPS.
