World Trade Center Panamá

Siebrasse de Sanchiz, Donna Sue 12 1900 (has links)

Lines of Discovery

Taylor, Jonathan Lorin 09 December 2005 (has links)
An entry for the World Trade Center Memorial Competition was expanded upon as a study into the nature of design. The project influenced its own evolution and revealed exciting outcomes. The memorial is a reinforced concrete tower with an acrylic water tank at the top. The water tank acts as a prism casting colorful light displays both in the tower and around the site. The tank is also the source for continually falling droplets of water. The drops fall 450 feet through an open chamber to land in a shallow overflowing pool and then wash over a stone sepulcher containing the unidentified remains of victims. / Master of Architecture

Media : Terroristens medhjälpare? / Media : Terroristens medhjälpare?

Wiklöw, Christoffer January 2011 (has links)
C-uppsats kandidat 2011 Title: Media – terroristens medhjälpare? Författare: Christoffer Wiklöw Språk: svenska Instution: JMK, Stockholm Universitet   En kvalitativ studie om New York Times språkbruk kring terrorism.

The impact of the attacks on 11 September 2001 on the World Trade Centre on the tourism industry in the Western Cape: a case study

Von Wielligh, Jacobus Petrus January 2009 (has links)
Mini Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M Tech: Business Administration in the FACULTY of BUSINESS at the CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2009 / The tourism industry is subject to the perception of the tourist whether the chosen destination is perceived as a safe destination. No tourist wants their planned vacation interrupted by acts of violence, placing his and his family’s lives in danger. The attacks on the World Trade Centre in September 2001, has changed the way we travelled for ever. The tourism industry realized that no destination, no mater how far removed from the so called “hot spots” (areas of conflict), could be seen as a safe destination. Acts of violence can occur at any destination at any time. This attack also had a significant impact on the way tourist travel and how they plan their vacations. Added security at all international airports were upgraded to ensure passenger safety, but with that came delays and longer check in times. All of these have a negative impact on the airlines. Tourist also opted for the more safer destinations, those that are removed form potential conflict areas. In the months following directly after the attacks, most popular destination experienced a significant decline in tourist numbers. Major airline across the globe also lost out on revenue, with some of them being forced to close their operations. This had an impact on employment figures in the tourism industry. The attacks however had a positive side to it as well. Some destinations benefited in tourism numbers, due to the fact that these destinations were seen a safe areas to spend one’s vacation at. South Africa, and in particular the Western Cape, is one of these areas that benefited with increasing tourism numbers, due to its status as a safe destination.

Teasdale, Mathieu 10 1900 (has links)
Thinking space narrative helps circulate in the margins of those of art, literature, politics, film. The rhetorical analysis of space narratives and its storytelling process shows, in three stages, that architectural contribution defines and redefines the possibilities of movement of speech in their opening or closing. First, the transition from modernism to postmodernism, by the analysis of Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, which deconstructs the programmatic narrative of an order allows a new performativity of reality. Secondly, the monumentality of Lower Manhattan, by its verticality, presents its narrative process set as a palimpsest where all traces, ideas, practices, utopias and destruction are legitimizing and criticizing elements in the narratives being written. By passing its representation in literature, in particular, the verticality is then a leakage whose upward movement, then down, shows the incompleteness of the story. Last, the building of the World Trade Center Memorial, re-entered into a unitary discursive model understood as a wide dispositif that reaffirms a return to an order of discourse, a political age memory. This space is one of the pilgrimage, the sacred place which makes his dead speak on behalf of an authority, which withhold the possibility of speech form outside. This reflection intends to present those spaces which are put in narrative.

Failure Analysis of the World Trade Center 5 Building

LaMalva, Kevin Joseph 29 April 2007 (has links)
This project involves a failure analysis of the internal structural collapse that occurred in World Trade Center 5 (WTC 5) due to fire exposure alone on September 11, 2001. It is hypothesized that the steel column-tree assembly failed during the heating phase of the fire. The results of this research have serious and far-reaching implications, for this method of construction is utilized in approximately 20,000 existing buildings and continues to be very popular. Catastrophic failure during the heating phase of a fire would endanger the lives of firefighters and building occupants undergoing extended egress times (e.g., high-rise buildings), or relying upon defend-in-place strategies (e.g., hospitals). Computer software was used to reconstruct the fire event and predict the structural performance of the assembly when exposed to the fire. Results from a finite element, thermal-stress model confirms this hypothesis, for it is concluded that the catastrophic, progressive structural collapse occurred approximately 2 hours into the fire exposure.

Contributions to the mechanics of variable mass systems.

Casetta, Leonardo 17 December 2008 (has links)
Since 1814, when the first researches on the topic were carried out, variable mass system mechanics has become a particular branch within classical mechanics. Applied problems involving variable mass systems are sparsely distributed over a wide range of different areas of knowledge, and go from engineering to medicine, for example. However, despite these successful applications, even today one can find in the specialized literature discussions on the fundamentals of the variable mass system mechanics. In this scenario, apparent paradoxes, which are based on different equations of motion for a same variable mass system, figure out. In this sense, the Wagners problem, in the context of the study of the impact of solid bodies into liquid surfaces, and the falling chain problem can be cited as didactic examples. In this thesis, topics like this one will be treated. However, the main scope of this work is to present a more general and interpretative discussion on both the theory and application of the mechanics of variable mass systems, but keeping the focus on contributions that enable a better understanding of such an important branch of mechanics. For that, original theoretical results will be presented, as also discussions and applications of them. In the beginning, a discussion on the first fundamental works about the dynamics of a variable mass particle is done. In such a context, original interpretations of this author are pointed out. Then, the application of Lagrange equations on variable mass systems is discussed. In this scenario, this author shows the so-called Lagrange equation for a control volume where mass varies with generalized coordinates and velocities. This is also an original result of this thesis. By the end, an extension of a variational principle to a control volume is shown, also an original result of this work. Two classical problems within the theory of variable mass systems are then treated, i.e. the falling chain problem and the Wagners problems. Both are apparently paradoxical problems. The resolution of such apparent paradoxes is addressed, what is also an original result. Within the present context of the mechanics of variable mass systems, a brief discussion on the problem of the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers is also done.

“An Experience Outside of Culture”: A Taxonomy of 9/11 Adult Fiction

Allison B. Moonitz 27 March 2006 (has links)
Serving as an unfortunate benchmark for the twenty-first century, 9/11 has completely altered society’s perceptions of personal safety, security and social identity, along with provoking intense emotional reactions. One outlet for these resulting emotions has been through art and literature. Five years have since passed and contemporary authors are still struggling to accurately represent that tragic day and its consequent impression. This paper provides an analysis of how the events of 9/11 have been incorporated into adult fiction. Variations of themes related to psychology, interpersonal relationships, political and social perspectives, and heroism were found to be used most frequently among authors.
