Firing Point: Patrol Torpedo Boats during World War II

Schick, Joshua J 15 December 2012 (has links)
At the beginning of American involvement in the Second World War the United States Navy developed a new class of vessel that had a tremendous impact during World War II. This vessel was the Patrol Torpedo boat. Originally designed to conduct torpedo attacks on enemy surface vessels, the PT boat successfully adapted multiple roles in addition to being a torpedo attack craft. The versatility of the Patrol Torpedo boat during World War II serving in these various roles and as an element of the US Navy has not been recognized by recent scholarship. Using primary sources from the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, and secondary sources this paper demonstrates that the Patrol Torpedo boat was a weapon that exemplified economy of force. A small inexpensive naval vessel was able to replace larger ships and work with different elements of the fleet to deny the use of coastal waters to the enemy.

“It is the promiscuous woman who is giving us the most trouble”: The Internal War on Prostitution in New Orleans during World War II

Baffoni, Allison 18 December 2015 (has links)
When the United States entered World War II, federal officials began planning a war on prostitution and decided to make New Orleans the poster city for reform. New Orleans held a reputation for being a destination for prostitution tin the U.S. A federally appointed group aptly named the Social Protection Division began a repression campaign in militarily dense areas throughout the United States. The goal was to protect soldiers by eliminating the threat from venereal disease carrying prostitutes. The Social Protection Division created a campaign with the New Orleans Health Department and the New Orleans Police Department to repression prostitution. Some in New Orleans, however, tried to undermine these efforts and continue the profitable tradition of prostitution. From 1942-1945, New Orleans became part of the internal war waged by the federal government against women deemed sexually dangerous to protect the patriotic male soldier being sent off to war.

Daily Life at Crystal City Internment Camp 1942-1945

Dietze, Caitlin T 13 May 2016 (has links)
Throughout World War II, the belligerent countries took enemy civilians, as well as soldiers, prisoner. The majority of the camps created to hold these prisoners were located in the European and Asian theaters of battle, but the United States operated prisoner of war camps and civilian internment camps as well. American internment camps, administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), imprisoned persons from the Axis countries of Japan, Italy, and Germany, deemed a threat to national security and categorized as a group as “enemy aliens.” Generally, these individuals were not threats, and a sizable number were legal U.S. citizens. Crystal City Internment Camp, located in Crystal City, Texas, interned individuals from all three enemy national backgrounds and allowed entire families to reside with the arrested family member. This research will attempt to highlight the daily experience of the internees in the Crystal City Internment Camp through internees’ oral histories and official camp reports, with a focus specifically on the German prisoners. Although scholars have examined these internment camps, little attention has been given to daily life in these camps.

Spisovatelka Vlasta Javořická a dva totalitní režimy v polovině 20. století. Obecní kronika jako ego-dokument / Vlasta Javořická and Two Totalitarian Regimes between 1938 and 1953. Municipal Chronicle of this Writer as an Ego-Document

BARTUŠEK, Petr January 2019 (has links)
This paper deals with the problematic of ego-documents as historical sources. The following study is based on one example of these sources regarding the municipality of Studená during the first half of the 20th century. It is mainly focused on the local chronicle depicting the period of 1938-1949 written by the native of Studená and writer Vlasta Javořická. The important part of this work is an edition of this chronical completed with the comparaison with its almost identical copy. The chronical is characteristic of a noticable amount of specificities. It is predominantly an ego-document rather than an institutional and commemorative source. Through the analysis of local chronicles (ie. ego-documents) and the study of additional sources this paper aims to contribute among others to the theoretical problematic of the criticism of the historical sources. At the same time, it shall extend the existing findings regarding the study of the society and the reflection of some periods of the 20th century thanks to the official local chroniclers as well as the authors of different sources having a similar character. The main problematic of this paper is the question whether it is possible to fully use the ego-documents for the factual learning or rather for the research of the history of mentalities, dailyness, cultural and social history, ethnography, etc.

Florestan Fernandes e o antirracismo nos Estados Unidos e Brasil (1941-1964) / Florestan Fernandes and Anti-Racism in the United States and Brazil, 1941-1964

Mesquita, Gustavo Rodrigues 20 April 2017 (has links)
This research aims at analyzing some meanings of the race question in Florestan Fernandes oeuvre. The imbrication of race and social problems in Bra-zil, produced when, throughout the 1950s, he carried out research on the Negro in national social structure, led me to investigate his early education in São Paulo. Young sociologist first academic and institutional relations were considered to the extent of investigating the most influent leanings into his education. International documents found, such as private correspondence from some of his main pro-fessors and colleagues, university and international organizations bulletins, and academic papers and reports, revealed Fernandes wide range of relations with some of Chicago Schools most important sociologists of the 1940s. The time felt like reconstruction due to post-Second World War, and it had great importance not only to the development of new theses concerning racism, but also to the widening of space in terms of intellectuals actions, within an antiracism agenda, supported by human rights agencies. Connections between Fernandes theses regarding the Negro situation and the making of an intellectual network, mainly through the United States, are the privileged object of this research. Therefore, it will be analyzed the importance of these relations to his theses on racism, poverty and democracy in Brazil.

Um tigre na sala: uma leitura de Os Vestígios do Dia / A tiger in the dining room: an analysis of The Remains of The Day

Mendonça, Juliana Silva Cunha de 08 October 2018 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to offer an interpretation of Kazuo Ishiguros novel The Remains of The Day based on the assumption that understanding the work requires viewing it from four temporal angles: the narrative present (1956, the year of the Suez Crisis); the time in which each narrated fact is located (the interwar period, in most cases); a sort of mythical past of a Great Britain to which the narrator refers inwardly; and the year of the immediate reception of the work (1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, though the book is published several months before the USSR falls apart). According to this reading, the novel would consist of a kind of fin-de-siècle work that throws a look of estrangement upon the twentieth century from the perspective of a narrator who is linked to values prior to this time and a reader who looks at both this narrator and his opponents in 1956 with the privilege of a temporal distance that end up creating an effect of dramatic irony.

Crônicas da guerra na Itália: estudo sobre o estilo de Rubem Braga e a história dos pracinhas / Crônicas da Guerra na Itália: study about style of Rubem Braga and the pracinhas history

Ireno, Rafael da Cruz 10 November 2016 (has links)
It is an investigation into the author\'s style, which has a unique pace in the modern Brazilian literature, as well as into problems of representation of the Expeditionary Forces participation in World War II, especially because it occurred alongside the democratic powers, whilst Brazil was under the rule of the Estado Novo dictatorship. The analysis will focus on a series of internal tensions of this anthology: the lyricism and the social concerns; the dynamic between the particular and the universal, the effect of censorship etc, in order to understand to which extent these elements impacted the aesthetic solutions Braga adopted to tell Mestre Pracinha\'s story.

Towards a New “Social Pact” : World War II and Social Policy in Great Britain, Italy and Vichy France / Vers un nouveau «pacte social» : la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et les politiques sociales en Grande-Bretagne, Italie et dans l’État français

Mioni, Michele 06 April 2018 (has links)
My dissertation concerns the social politics in Great Britain, in the Vichy regime, and in Fascist Italy during World War II. My approach to the topic, however, is not narrowly limited to the war years. It takes into account the path dependence of the previous policies in the three countries, and is open to the further developments of the immediate postwar years. I split my work in three parts, according to methodological and thematic criteria. ln a first part, I provided the overview of the social politics enacted in the three countries from the end of the 19th Century to the outbreak of the war. ln this section, I captured the incremental nature of the social policies, also retracing the specific policy legacy in each country. The very cure of my research, however, dwells in the other two parts. ln section two, I carried out a comparative analysis of the policies implemented during the war, and the draft projects for after the war. This section is split in three chapters, where I scrutinized the social politics in each country, and a conclusive chapter where I crossed the results of my investigation, strengthening its comparative aspects. The third part is a comparative/transnational exploration on the political use of social policy. On the one hand, social policy was exploited to strengthen the home front and gamer domestic political consensus. On the other, the dissemination of information and the propaganda of the postwar social project was also expected to play a not secondary role in the resettlement of the international relations after the war

ADOLF HITLER A HERMANN GÖRING. PŘÁTELSTVÍ PŘEDNÍCH NACISTŮ V OBDOBÍ DRUHÉ SVĚTOVÉ VÁLKY. / ADOLF HITLER AND HERMANN GÖRING. THE FRIEDSHIP OF LEADING NAZIS DURING WORLD WAR II.

CINGROŠ, Jan January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the relationship between two important figures at Nazi Germany during the Second World War - Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler and Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe Hermann Goering. Although these two men participated on a large scale in shaping the policy of the Third Reich, their relationship went through a various stages during a war time. They did not get along afterwards and the initial euphoria and confidence of their relationship did not last long. As a time went it started to appear partial disagreements that resulted rupturing of work and personal relationship. This so called "cooperation" of both the in the Nazi Germany during the war of the 20th century is the core of this work.
