A study of factors contributing to joining and leaving a religion

Ripén, Caroline January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the differences in defectors former religious lives. The literature is rich in references topeople from secular societies being fascinated by religions that are individualistic in nature and hence allowpeople freedom of choice in regards to their beliefs. However, we rarely hear about people who have left this new age belief environment or other religious environments. The study specifically focuses on the defectors, who have left a religious organization or have chosen to leave their religious belief. This study seeks to discover why defectors first came to believe and what got them to leave the religious arena. What happened to their faith, and what caused them to leave their former religion? This is what this study is attempting to shed more light on. The findings indicate that close group-relationships can be vital to one's person and create both positive and negative experiences. The social connections with other people is vital to not create a feeling of alienation and emptiness, leading to loss of meaning in life. Peter L Berger and other sociologists have stressed that religion is meaningful to people, that every society has religion, and that people need religious consolation to face difficult existential questions.

Teil der grossen Geschichte sein Die missiologische Bedeutung theologischer Narrative am Beispiel der “Reich Gottes Story” von N.T. Wright / To be part of the Bible's grand narrative The missiological importance of theological narratives, using the example of N.T. Wright's narrative approach to the "Story of the Kingdom of Heaven“

Roth, Tobias 01 1900 (has links)
This master thesis examines the correlation between the narrative of the kingdom of heaven theory and its missiological adaptations. Based on examples from the works of N.T. Wright, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain what kind of relevance narratives of the kingdom of heaven theory might have for theology and how they could be applied in missiology. This analysis revolves around the main question: What importance should be awarded to the kingdom of heaven narratives in missiology? Consequently, the first chapter deals with the basic framework of this paper. Chapter two then focuses on examining the basic contents of Wright’s work and how he is able to create a meta-narrative based on the kingdom of heaven approach. The third chapter is devoted to the substantive investigation and elaboration of a metanarrative of the kingdom of God defined by Wright. The fourth and last chapter of this paper is presenting the main results of this thesis before leading up to a draft of a narrative-missiological approach. In addition, various aspects of Wright’s approach are critically discussed. The results then are embedded in a German context which leads to a prospect of future research opportunities. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

Às margens: um estudo ao redor de Os Sertões, Native Son e Cidade de Deus / On the margins: a study on Os Sertões, Native Son and Cidade de Deus

Santos, Carolina Correia dos 06 September 2013 (has links)
This dissertation looks at the work of Euclides da Cunha\'s Os Sertões (1902), Richard Wright\'s Native Son (1940) and Paulo Lins\'s Cidade de Deus (1997). It seeks to be a creative reading of the books and their critical fortune by way of a comparative approach, ultimately allowing new aspects, such as hegemonic and counter-hegemonic elements, to come to the fore. The basis of this study is that literary and critical texts are all inserted in a greater political field. This research draws upon neighboring disciplines and theorists such as: Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Ranajit Guha, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Jacques Derrida.

Nonetheless, it tries to have a different focus. Among many theoreticaleconomical models which explain the emergence of money, there is one that distinguishes itself due to its simplicity, efficiency, and robustness: Kiyotaki-Wright's model. Therefore, some economists devoted themselves to apply this model in experiments with human beings and in computer simulations. Among those economists, Duffy and Ochs applied it later, correcting some flaws of the application process used by their predecessors. Duffy and Ochs's studies showed that Kiyotaki-Wright's model is actually valid for its purpose. However, besides all the efforts made, their agents were not able to achieve the foreseen equilibrium. In the same way, the French researcher Rouchier repeated methodologically the works of Duffy and Ochs while criticizing their implementation details. From this research, Rouchier creates other four sub-models in order to take her agents to the proposed equilibrium, obtaining partial success. In this dissertation, the computer system development platform is Swarm, especially created to multi-agent simulations and used, most of the time, in social and biological scope models. The agents' rationalization process is undertaken in trial and error way in accordance with the reinforcement learning technique, analyzing the answer given by the environment in each period. Finally, a new entity called Mediator is created to intermediate the relations between agents and mainly to pair them randomly. The obtained results are, in general, closer to the equilibrium when compared to the results of previous research. From them, some studies are made about the relation between the number of agents and the number of periods of simulation as values approximates the equilibrium.

Ett sätt att klippa komedi : En visuell analys om filmklippning och övergångar i Edgar Wrights komedifilm Scott Pilgrim vs the World. / A way to cut comedy : A visual analysis about film editing and transitions in Edgar Wrights comedy Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Ek, Leo January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) way to use transitions and cuts and how they relate to humor and comedy. Three sequences that represent a breadth of different techniques and theories from cuts gets analyzed and explored. This to understand how transitions, for example a wipe, gets used, how the movie progresses with continuity editing and how the movement contributes to the editing and to the comedy. With the help of Walter Murch's theories about what motivate a cut, Bordwell and Thompson’s theories about how cuts and transitions is used and what impact this has on the movie and Rosengrens theories about editing comedy and Meyers (2000) theories about humor, the essay investigate editing techniques and transitions and how they are able to move the movie in space and time or transfer a motion in a transition. The result shows that Edgar Wright, Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss uses a lot of different techniques to develop a visual style and in Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) the focus lies on how motion, energy, movement and comedic timing drives the movie forward and perceived it as a comedy.

Toward a religion of humanity : Frances Wright's crusade for republican values

Kuntz, Katherine January 1998 (has links)
Frances Wright attempted to reform America between 1825 and 1839. Her activities were unlike any other for a woman of her time. In public lectures to audiences of men and women throughout the East and Midwest, she spoke on the evils of orthodox religion and advocated abolition, equal rights, and universal education for all people regardless of gender or class. In both action and thought, she challenged all notions of nineteenth-century womanhood. Wright's public career helps illuminate the history of antebellum American reform because it reflects the ferment and range of such activity. This study will demonstrate that ideology as a category of study is useful when examining nineteenth-century women in several interrelated contexts. Unlike previous studies examining her as a women's rights advocate, however, this is not a feminist interpretation. Wright's significance as a humanitarian is much larger than any emphasis she gave to women in her rhetoric. Part of her motivation, like her sisters in benevolence reform, involved Christianity and orthodox religion. But unlike most women of her time, Wright believed religion prevented the realization of republican values -- in particular, equality -- because the clergy perpetuated elements of theology scientific methods could not prove true. Intellectual development and social improvement could not occur, she boldly asserted, until Americans threw off religion's blanket of ignorance. Most Americans rejected Wright's denunciations of religion and calls for equality, but to some her message rang true. Her rhetoric planted in progressive women concepts about religious constraints on females and the possibilities of egalitarianism. These individuals would become leaders in the women's rights movement during the final decades of the century. / Department of History

Names, Violence, and the African American Vernacular in Richard Wright's The Outsider

Bailly, Sarah 15 May 2009 (has links)
An analysis of the names and violence in Richard Wright's The Outsider reveals Wright's aesthetic program for the novel. Wright's recurring themes and the meanings of the name and aliases of his protagonist are indicative of African American vernacular tradition. Despite Wright's physical distance from African American life in the United States at the time of the novel's writing, he still conveys a strong connection to the African American experience, linking that experience with the suffering of all oppressed people. By using the idea of double-consciousness and various forms of signification, including masking, naming, and improvisation, Wright locates his work within the African American folk tradition and celebrates the freedom and subversive nature of African American expression.

Marshall Carby's An Experiment with an Air Pump

Carby, Marshall 20 May 2011 (has links)
Using Joseph Wright's painting, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump as an inspirational starting point, Shelagh Stephenson's An Experiment with an Air Pump explores the depth of human existence using universal conflicts such as: morals versus ethics, science versus God and right versus wrong. Since the play's premiere in 1998, it has provided a forum for hot button topics such as stem cell research, abortion, and scientific experimentation. The University of New Orleans' production not only presented the issues in the play, it strives to be an example of theatrical excellence, challenge and engage both the company and the audience.
