Females’ Perspectives on Emergence to Adulthood: The Role of Information Communication Technologies

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Young women ages 18-29 are the highest users of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the United States. As a group, they curate and create more online content than any other adult user group (Duggan, 2014). Throughout the research literature, scholars claim that the high rate of technology use among young people is related to their developmental stage (boyd, 2014; Kuper & Mustaki, 2014; Subrahmanyam & Greenfield, 2008; Turkle, 2010). The primary developmental tasks of young adults include forming an adult identity, and sustaining intimate relationships. Developmental psychologists and sociologist hypothesize that ICT’s influence developmental trajectories and outcomes (Jensen & Arnett, 2012). Given the breadth of discussion in the literature about development, and ICT use, there is relatively little research focusing on how young women interpret and internalize these experiences. The primary purpose of this study was to understand the interaction between young adults frequent online use and developmental tasks — identity formation and intimate relationships. Interviews were conducted with young women (18-29) who qualified as high users (N=22). Participants’ were interviewed twice; the initial interview used a structured schedule, providing uniformity across participants. The second interview was an informal conversation personalized to the participant’s’ interests, experiences, and opinions about the topic. Participants were recruited from across the country, and the diversity in the sample mirrors the heterogeneous nature of the emerging adult population. Two forms of qualitative analysis were used, open thematic coding and narrative analysis. Findings demonstrated the shift of the networked culture creates a highly individualized life trajectory for young people. Identity and intimacy are still the salient developmental tasks for young adults, but continue evolve throughout the life course. . Narrative analyses were used to show strengths of the critical realism theory, especially the reflexive modes, by using case examples. Lastly, the role of ICT are discussed using four primary themes— augmented relationships, disruptive networks, defining moments, and driven agency. Ultimately, this research study helps provide evidence that online spaces are relational and the interactions a part of sociality. For social workers ability to understand development experiences and other facets of social life, further research is needed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Social Work 2016

This work aims to very contradictions and ambiguities in the definition of Young leadership and use this concept means to adapt to the exclusion of Young social order today. The educational guidelines, and the Reformo f Secundary Education, explain the Cult of prominence as a promissing way to account for both na urgent social and the personal anguish of Young people in order to shift responsibilityfor overcoming this issues to Young people themselves, by individual efforts, enhancement of the resilience and anchievement of social solidary actions. This perspective the concepto f education is a political and ideological toward the politicization of youth in relation to macro social cause of peverity. The concepto f Prominence Youthis a great challenge that permeat such as different perspectives of citizenship, participation, social responsability, among others. The metodology of the work is in literature and Field research, using questionnaries and dialogue groups, composed of high school students at a school in the city of Umuarama – PR. Their analysis revealedthat conceptual ambiguities, and the Young people in many lines associated with youth involvement in social activities and volunteer. However, italso reveals the expression of a quest for autonomy and need to be designed as a social subject. The resulto f this research suggests that youth involvementis unveiled by researchers in a critical way, speccially with regard to its conceptual ambiguity.

Tři výrazné vývojové trendy v young adult literatuře / Three significant trends in young adult literature

Stupková, Kateřina January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis called Three significant trends in young adult literature is to analyse this literary category in the Czech Republic; to describe the publishing houses focusing on this type of literature and to determine, if there are any trends - and if so to describe them. The first chapter states different definitions of so called YA literature and its understanding abroad and in the Czech Republic among the publishers. In the next chapter I characterise the main trends in YA literature that already exist and also those that could emerge, according to literary agents and publishers. In the next part of this thesis I describe three chosen genres: urban fantasy, fairy tale retellings and dystopian novels and I analyse four series determined as typical for respective genres: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Divergent by Veronica Roth. Each analysis is followed by the description of media response to the chosen series. The thesis also includes the interviews with editors from chosen publishing houses focusing on YA literature: Tereza Pecáková from CooBoo, Jakub Šedivý from Fragment, Lucie Kučová from Egmont and Eva Sedláčková and Jiří Štěpán from Host. This practical part is preceded by a theoretical...

In this work, we present the basic representation theory of the symmetric group and its combinatorial aspects. The main objective of this work is to construct a complete set of irreducible and inequivalent representations of the symmetric group, in terms of its partition and combinatorial concepts related to Young’s tableau. We will see that this combinatorial object will provide us two ways of describing the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, a politabloid pathway, and an alternative via idempotent group algebra, and that, in fact, these two approaches are isomorphic. We will cover some interesting results, such as the Young’s rule, the branching rule, and the Robinson-Schensted’s combinatorial matching algorithm.

The needs of unemployed youth on the West Rand

Maribe, Sarah Imelda Mapharami 10 September 2012 (has links)
M.A. / Most of the unemployed juvenile delinquents used in this study come from single parent families or from families where both or either of the parents are deceased or have deserted. The majority of families used were found to consist of parents who were either unemployed, deserted or deceased. Most of the unemployed juveniles were, as a result, forced to leave school due to financial problems. The majority of them left school before they reached Standard 6. As a result of this, a high percentage of the unemployed juveniles involved in this study do not qualify for admission to the two identified institutions.

Jacobs, Anthony Charles 09 January 2008 (has links)
This study is motivated out of a concern for the declining church attendance of young adults. The goal of this study is the identification of the needs of young adults in relation to the church service and the measurement of the success of the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa (A.F.M. hereafter) in meeting these needs. The reseach is done through an exploratory-descriptive literature study and an empirical study within certain A.F.M. congregations. In the literature study the developmental tasks, context and needs of young adults are identified and these needs are explained within the framework of several need-models from psychology and other sciences. The context of young adults is explained by the generation gaps as described by Codrington (1999). The identified needs of Carroll (1991), a sense of meaning, belonging and empowerment, forms the focus of this study. In the literature study the church service, within the context of the A.F.M. Church is explored, as well as how the liturgical elements are able to meet the needs of Carroll. The needs of young adults in relation to the church service and how the A.F.M. Church succeeds in meeting these needs, are explored through the use of self-administered questionnaires. The most important finding of the empirical study, is that young adults do agree with the needs identified by Carroll. A surprising result in contradiction with the literature, is that young adults do have a strong sense of social responsibility and want to be empowered to make a difference in the world. The four participating A.F.M. congregations, Goodwood, Strandfontein, Doxa Deo Langeberg and the Paarl Protea Worship Centre, were positively evaluated by respondents in terms of meeting the needs of Carroll. There was however, a significant statistical difference between the respondents’ evaluation of Carroll’s needs and the success of the participating churches’ success in meeting these needs. The study is concluded with recommendations for the planning of church services within the context of the A.F.M. as well as follow-up studies. The conclusion of this study is that the true character of the church service must be reflected in the planning of the liturgical elements. Enough freedom for the functioning of the Holy Spirit must also be created in such a way that the needs of young adults can be met. The planning of the church service must be focussed on the worshipping of God, the preaching of the gospel in such a way that people can find new meaning in their lives, the facilitating of a meeting between congregation and God, the creating of a loving community and the empowerment of people to make a difference in the world. In this way, the commands of God and the needs of young adults are kept in balance. / Prof. W.J. Hatting

Blignault, Madeleine Hildegarde 10 November 2005 (has links)
1. ENGLISH: The purpose of this study was to determine, within the family ecology perspective, the priority values of a group of young adult females and to identifY the family members involved in the transmission of these values. A literature review was conducted on: <ul> <li>The properties, functions, classifications of values as well as concepts related to values. </li> <li>The role of culture in values. </li> <li>The structures, roles and functions of the family in the development of a system of values. </li> <li>Various theories explaining the development of the young adult were connected to the development of values. <br></li></ul> Qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques were selected for this study. Triangulation, a general principle to enhance validity, was applied to various stages of the study. A questionnaire was constructed to determine the social demographic profile of the participants. A Likert-type scale and two questionnaires were constructed to determine the significance of the twenty categories of values. The items of the Likert-type scale were linked to specific situations. Two questionnaires were constructed to distinguish between the family members (amongst others) involved in the transmission of the twenty categories of values. The participants comprised of 154 young adult female nurses at a selected college in Gauteng. This group included Afrikaans and English speaking Whites, Coloureds, Indians as well as Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa and Zulu speaking Blacks. In addition to the above participants three Tswana speaking Black and three Afrikaans speaking White young adult nurses were interviewed on developmental and family tasks to identify and clarify the transmission of values in their family. Field studies and interviews with informants at various stages of the research process generated, confirmed and clarified information. 1. On value priorities: <ul> <li>The following value categories were regarded as important: religious, occupation, relations, bodily, life, economy, morality, self: safety, intellect, time and space, the law and disposition. </li> <li>The less important value categories were: culture, recreation, nature and aesthetics. </li> <li>The least important value categories were: national, authority and politics.<br></li></ul> 2. On the transmission of values: <ul> <li>Mothers play the most important role in values related to socialization. </li> <li>The role of the father is of lesser importance due to various factors. </li> <li>Members of the nuclear and extended family also participate in transmitting values. </li> <li>The school and church are important role players in religious values. </li> <li>The media, role models and friends play an important role in values related to politics, nature and self concept.<br> </li></ul> 3. On the demographic profile: <ul> <li>The participants represented the lower and middle income groups. </li> <li>Christianity is the dominant religion of these groups. Most of the Indians are Hindus.<br> </li></ul> To conclude the inter-relatedness of value categories and the important influence of context were discussed to develop models and theories were developed. / Thesis (PhD (Consumer Sience))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Consumer Science / unrestricted

Förälder till min förälder – ungdomar och unga vuxnas upplevelse av att ha en förälder med ung demenssjukdom / Parent to my parent – adolescents and young adults experiences of having a parent with young onset dementia

Gunnander, Hanna, Nilsson, Josefin January 2021 (has links)
Background: Dementia is called “the relatives' disease” as the disease affects the relatives. Dementia is divided into young and late, where young onset dementia is diagnosed before the age of 65. In young onset dementia, the person is in a different life situation and more often has children living at home. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate adolescent’s and young adult’s experiences of having a parent diagnosed with young onset dementia. Method: A structured literature study with an inductive approach, where 10 articles were selected as result articles. Results: The result shows four categories: Experience of role and relationship changes, Experience of personality and behavioral changes, Experience of information and support needs and Experience of coping strategies. The result shows that the children experience a responsibility to care for the whole family, a grief and loss for their parent. The children experience shame, isolate themselves and find different strategies to be able to easily manage their everyday life. Conclusion: Children are negatively affected by having a parent diagnosed with young onset dementia and experience feelings of sadness, loss, stress, fear and shame. The children experience a need but lack of information and support from the healthcare. As a nurse it is important to gain knowledge about children’s individual needs in order to be able to adapt the information and support they need.

Young parenthood in Sweden : The influence on fertility of education among young adults, 1980-2014

Kullbrandt, Marina January 2021 (has links)
There are indications that young adults, and especially young parents, are inincreasingly economically challenging positions. Educational attainment is commonly used in research evaluating fertility behaviour, while less is known how the relationship between education and fertility has changed over time. Therefore, this thesis analyses the transition into parenthood among young adult men and women in Sweden over time, focusing on the role of education on fertility. Using an event history analysis framework, the transition to first birth among 20-25 year-olds in Sweden is analysed using the Swedish Generations and Gender Survey over the period 1980 to 2014. On average, men and women of lower education have a higher risk of entering parenthood between the ages of 20 to 25 compared to all other educational levels. However, the relationship seems to be conditioned on calendar period and gender, where the risk of entering parenthood between ages 20 to 25 is higher in the 1990s and 2000s compared to the 1980s among low educated men, where the opposite is true for women.

Identity and conspicuous consumption in Japan and Hong Kong : an exploratory study of what influences young adults’ identity in relation to conspicuous consumption

Trang, Kenny, Haile Selassie, Eden January 2020 (has links)
This study is based on young adults’ identity in Japan and Hong Kong and its relation to conspicuous consumption. The purpose of this study is to explore how conspicuous consumption influenced the young adults’ identities in Japan and Hong Kong. In order to study this phenomenon, we created a conceptual model, we named “Young Adults Conspicuous Consumption Identity” (YACCI), which is based on previous research on identity and luxury values. The research is based on a qualitative study and the empirical data was gathered through 11 semi-structured interviews with young adults from Hong Kong and Japan. Findings show that the identities of young adults in Japan and Hong Kong are heavily influenced by the society that surrounds them. The results of the societal pressures force them to keep up with a certain standard of image which increase their conspicuous consumption behaviour. This study has contributed to a further understanding of underlying factors that influence young adults’ identities in Japan and Hong Kong.
