Publishing Swinburne : the poet, his publishers and critics

Simmonds, Clive January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the publishing history of Algernon Charles Swinburne during his lifetime (1837-1909). The first chapter presents a detailed narrative from his first book in 1860 to the mid 18705: it includes the scandal of Poems and Ballads in 1866; his subsequent relations with the somewhat dubious John Camden Hotten; and then his search to find another publisher who was to be Andrew Chatto, with whom Swinburne published for the rest of his life. It is followed by a chapter which looks at the tidal wave of criticism generated by Poems and Ballads but which continued long after, and shows how Swinburne responded. The third and central chapter turns to consider the periodical press, important throughout his career not just for reviewing but also as a very significant medium for publishing poetry. Chapter 4 on marketing looks closely at the business of producing and of selling Swinburne's output. Finally Chapter 5 deals with some aspects of his career after the move to Putney, and shows that while Theodore Watts, his friend and in effect his agent, was making conscious efforts to reshape the poet, some of Swinburne's interests were moving with the tide of public taste; how this was demonstrated in particular by his volume of Selections and how his poetic oeuvre was finally consolidated in the Collected Edition at the end of his life. The thesis shows that popular interest was mainly on his earlier poetry, and suggests his high contemporary reputation (which was not fully reflected in sales) was maintained by the periodical press.

Publishing Public History: Publishing Options for Small Organizations

Beaton, Angela Ann January 2019 (has links)
Publishing books and catalogs has long been the domain of large museums and historical societies that have an equally large budget. While large organizations can commit vast amounts of time and resources to publishing, many small organizations cannot. Before recent technological advances, small museums and local history organizations were unable to participate in the publishing of books and catalogs easily. However, today, there are several viable options for these organizations to begin publishing. This research aims to highlight the ways that small organizations in the Upper Midwest have been utilizing technological advances and strategic partnerships to publish. Using these tools and partnerships, independently published books, catalogs, and other publications can be academically sound, including peer review, while also being affordable and easily created.

Generating value to society from the abundance of government data, has become imperative in the strategies of data availability that are being published through datasets. The datasets, tabulated data with a certain structure, are an example of a meeting of databases that aim to be successful setting up as central catalogs from the point of view of the citizens, increasing the visibility on and of the actions of the public management. Accomplishing the structuring of these informational resources, so that this helps in their revaluation, is one of the challenges of Information Science. The research question is: How is the adherence to the use of metadata in the instructions given to data publishers in South American governments being addressed? The objective is to describe the adherence to the use of metadata in the datasets of governments of South American countries, based on the context and conceptual framework presented in the instructions for data publishers, found on the official open data sites of the analyzed countries. It is believed that studies such as this one can provide elements that act as subsidies for government strategies, addressing social dimensions deriving out of the information professionals. It is a descriptive research, of qualitative nature, focused on the critical observation of the documents that approach the descriptive treatment of the governmental datasets. Bibliographic and documentary analyses are used as methodological procedures, and the definition of case studies in the countries Colombia, Brazil, Spain and Portugal, addressing the volume of data and information through the technique of content analysis. The effort made by the holders of the documents available in the four analyzed countries by the broad thematic content related to the experimental use of the metadata is noticed, thus giving greater importance to the practical aspect in relation to the theoretical, without disregarding the relevance of the theoretical explanations. It is believed that creating and implementing application profiles among communities of countries, such as the DCAT-AP, created and recommended by the European community of nations and suggested by the data sites of the analyzed countries, is important. Concerns referent to the publication processes of government data and their relations with other topics of socio-economic interest are admitted, such as possible linkages with indicators of development in countries and regions, under the prism of research originated from the Information Science.

This Master’s work proposes a new look at the relationship of José de Alencar with his reader. In more specific terms, the objective of this work was to discuss the extent to which the reading of Honoré de Balzac in Brazil, one of the models of the urban Alencar, precedes the reading of José de Alencar, as has been thought, and, to what extent, the Brazilian novelist, by appropriating this literature still unknown by the Portuguese-speaking public here, contributes to the creation and education of the taste of this part of the reading public of novels. In order to arrive at the confirmation of this initial hypothesis, the research has focused on two axes of investigation. In the first one, centered on the literary aspects, from the novels Eugénie Grandet (1833), by Balzac, and Senhora (1875), by Alencar, it is analyzed the efforts of the Brazilian writer to extrapolate the technique of the French master with regard to the treatment of the human dramas, as well as the novelist’s commitment to the understanding and fictionalization of the nineteenth century Brazilian social context. In the second and main axis of this work, the attention is focused on the primary sources, whose analysis opens new paths for the knowledge of modes of production, dissemination and reception of literature in the period, and, consequently, for a more diversified understanding of the Brazilian Cultural History of the same period. Putting in check the concept of source and influence, the dichotomy between periphery and center, as well as the conventional idea of delay, this work, by placing José de Alencar at the center of the formation of an audience, invites to rethink the role of the writer also in the formation of a literary system in Brazil, showing that much is gained by making prismmatic the idea that the contact of the Brazilian reader with the European romances preexisted the reading of the national novels. / FAPESP n° 2015/24023-5

This research is about the 1960 decade, contextualized by a revolutionary atmosphere of the social, political, ideological and cultural standpoint. Moreover, it was remarkable to the editorial universe. In this contest, the Civilização Brasileira publisher stood out, and it has been the best period since it was founded in the late 1920s. Under the direction of Enio Silveira publisher it has become leftist stronghold of intellectuals and was the cot of innovations in book design, especially about the book covers. Inventing the Borzoi : Alfred and Blanche Knopf and the rhetoric of prestige in modern American book publishing, 1915-1929

Root, Amy Louise 30 August 2010 (has links)
Signified by an eye-catching wolfhound logo (the borzoi), the Alfred A. Knopf publishing company holds considerable prestige in the American book trade, having released works by twenty-one Nobel Prize winners, forty-nine Pulitzer Prize winners, and twenty-nine National Book Award winners to date. Founded in 1915, the firm developed a reputation for excellence in less than a decade, despite the fact that the husband-and-wife team at the helm—Alfred and Blanche Knopf—were young novices. At once a literary history and an analysis of a unique form of marketing rhetoric, Inventing the Borzoi traces the company’s status to the early acquisition of books written by noteworthy European authors, the use of distinctive design and production elements that gave Borzoi books an artisanal appearance, and marketing messages that touted Alfred Knopf himself as a new arbiter of literary standards for an audience that comprised not only consumers but also literary agents, authors, critics, booksellers, and other members of the trade. Synthesizing bibliographical research with Kenneth Burke’s theories of rhetoric and identity, this dissertation yields a multi-faceted account of the Knopf company’s first fourteen years, culminating at the cusp of the Great Depression. Burke’s notions of dramatism provide a useful means for exploring the Knopfs’ performance of a distinctive literary role. This study extends Burkean principles to a medium through which much complex language is transmitted—the book-publishing machine—uniting the philosophies of the father of modern rhetorical studies with the early history of a publishing firm whose success was largely built on the mastery of rhetorical strategies. Each chapter in this study concludes with an interpretation of Knopf history as illuminated by the pentad of Burkean dramatism: act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose. The first comprehensive examination of the company’s rapidly achieved stature, this study argues that the Borzoi identity was shaped not only by conventional marketing motivations but also became a consistent extension of the way Alfred and Blanche perceived themselves. / text

Level-Up!

Lagergren, Daniel, Hägglund, Jens January 2012 (has links)
