Sectoral Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on Host Country Economic Growth: Evidence from Emerging Countries

Rahimov, Vugar January 2013 (has links)
In this paper, I study the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on a group of host country economic growth for the period 1994-2011. Using aggregate level FDI data for a group of five emerging countries, the paper reveals that FDI has a positive effect on economic growth. Then I use sectoral data and test whether all the sectors have positive effects on growth. The results vary across the sectors. The results seem to be positive for mining and quarrying as well as manufacturing sector, while trade and financial intermediation sectors to have a negative effect on economic growth.

Seeking the Breakthrough of the Internationalization of Yu-tong Bus Company / Seeking the Breakthrough of the Internationalization of Yu-tong Bus Company

Wang, Jing, Fu, Hongpeng January 2009 (has links)
Nowadays, China bus industry has stepped into a relative fast development stage. Domestic manufacturers have turned their attention to the international market. Yu-tong Bus Company, as one of the first-class and representative manufacturers in the industry, has made indubitable achievements in the international market, especially in middle and low-end market. However, for the process of internationalization, Yu-tong still needs to confront some barriers and obstacles. Particularly, for high-end market, more gaps exist which lead to the limitation of its competitive forces. In the thesis, we made the SWOT analysis about the export condition of Yu-tong according to the materials and data that we collected, combining with the relevant theories, conducting various analysis and investigations, we considered “Reverse FDI”(Reverse Foreign Direct Investment) as more appropriate and effective way for the internationalization, and revolving around the theory, we mainly concentrated on the extending of high-end market, tabled some proposals about seeking the breakthrough in the internationalization of Yu-tong Bus Company.

Technological Innovation of Chinese Firms: Indigenous R and D, Foreign Direct Investment, and Markets

Zhang, Jingjing 10 May 2006 (has links)
What are the factors behind the recent development of industrial technology in China? Does China follow the path of learning technology from outside through direct foreign investment and international trade as other Asian newly industrialized economies, or imitate the U.S. model that develop science and technology within the country based on the strong domestic research capacity? This study examines these questions using a comprehensive research model and a new Chinese patent dataset. The patent statistics in this study are created based on more than 120 thousand granted invention patent abstracts in China between 1985 and 2003. Compared with the Chinese patent data used in prior studies, this dataset distinguishes firm patents from patents awarded to universities and research institutes. The dependent variable for regression analysis is the technological innovation performance of Chinese domestic firms as measured by the number of patents awarded to firms in 30 Chinese provinces from 1989 to 1999. The final panel data for regression analysis were completed with other provincial indicators for the same years on research and development (R and D) expenditures by firms and public institutions, foreign direct investment (FDI), domestic consumption, and foreign exports. The results of count data fixed effect regression approaches show that the efforts of firms, measured by industrial R and D expenditures, spillovers from R and D activities conducted at universities and public institutions in the same region, and demand driven mainly by foreign exports are the most prominent positive factors in the domestic firms technological innovation performance. While the net impact of FDI on domestic firms patenting activity is mostly insignificant and sometimes negative

Determinants of Swedish and German FDI : The case of Baltic and CEE Countries

Cociu, Sergiu, Gustavsson, Thomas January 2007 (has links)

This thesis tries to determine some of the driving force behind Swedish foreign direct in-vestments into the Baltic counties. The analysis is performed in three steps, first we analyze global FDI into transitional economies, and afterwards we look at Swedish FDI and com-pare it with German FDI. The determinants examined are index of economic freedom, R&D intensity, trade balance, wage level and proximity. The analyzed period is form 1995 to 2005. The analysis use data on the following transition countries Latvia, Lithuania, Esto-nia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. The results show that the determinants vary across the countries. The motives of Swedish and German investors differ. Thus, for Swedish investors R&D, economical free-dom and trade balance are the influencing factors, but for Germany only trade balance and wage level are important. The conclusion is that different determinants triggers foreign di-rect investment in transitional economies in different ways.

Nonlinear model-based fault detection and isolation : improvements in the case of single/multiple faults and uncertainties in the model parameters

Castillo, Iván 15 June 2011 (has links)
This dissertation addresses fault detection and isolation (FDI) for nonlinear systems based on models using two different approaches. The first approach detects and isolates single and multiple faults, particularly when there are restrictions in measuring process variables. The FDI model-based method is based on nonlinear state estimators, in which the estimates are calculated under high filtering, and a high fidelity residuals model, obtained from the difference between measurements and estimates. In the second approach, a robust fault detection and isolation (RFDI) system, that handles both parameter estimation and parameters with uncertainties, is proposed in which complex models can be simplified with nonlinear functions so that they can be formulated as differential algebraic equations (DAE). In utilizing this framework, faults are identified by performing a statistical analysis. Finally, comparisons with existing data-driven approaches show that the proposed model-based methods are capable of distinguishing a fault from the diverse array of possible faults, a common occurrence in complex processes. / text

Tiesioginių užsienio investicijų įtaka regionų vystimuisi / The Influence of Foreign Direct Investment for Regions Growth

Valčiukaitė, Rita 25 September 2008 (has links)
This master‘s final paper is up to character the influence of foreign investment for regions growth and economic situation in Lithuania. The analysis or nonfiction literature, researches’ and acts of law showed, that here are many reasons which stimulates the in draft of foreign direct investments. But country must consider that foreign direct investment not only influence the growth of economy, but can also block it. The analysis of foreign direct investment distribution by the sort of economic activity in the regions unfolded, that amount of investment growth every year, but their distribution in regions is uneven.

Ausländische Direktinvestitionen im Transformationsprozess. Einflüsse auf Unternehmensproduktivität und Beschäftigung in Serbien

Petrovic, Sanela 05 May 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Labour tax policies and strategic offshoring under unionised oligopoly

Rocha-Akis, Silvia January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In a model with a unionised immobile labour force we analyse how labour taxes and transfers towards unemployed workers are optimally cho- sen when a welfare maximising government faces oligopolistic and partly mobile firms. We consider two polar types of government: one whose objective consists of maximising the sum of domestic producer's and con- sumers' surplus and one that aims at maximising employed and unem- ployed workers' payoffs. We show that depending on the combination of foreign labour costs, the degree of domestic union bargaining power, and the sunk costs of relocation, the former type of government may choose to set taxes so as to induce an outward relocation of production.
