A field and laboratory investigation of the compliance of fractured rockLubbe, Rudi January 2005 (has links)
Compressional and shear wave velocity and attenuation measurements were obtained in the laboratory from 50 mm diameter, cylindrical, limestone core samples over a confining pressure range of 5 – 60 MPa. Normal and tangential fracture compliance values, as a function of confining pressure, were calculated for a single fracture cut perpendicular to the long axis of the core. The ratio of the normal to tangential compliance was approximately 0.4 and was independent of the applied stress. Values of normal and tangential fracture compliance calculated were of the order 10-14 m/Pa, and decreased with an increase in confining pressure. Both Q-1P and Q-1S1/Qs were shown to be small for these samples. A borehole test site was constructed in a Carboniferous limestone quarry, at Tytherington, situated north of Bristol, UK. This quarry was chosen because the rock type was fairly homogeneous and the fractures could be mapped in the quarry walls as well as down three, 40 m vertical boreholes drilled in-line in the quarry floor. Wireline logs were obtained in all the holes and a seismic crosshole survey was carried out between the two outermost boreholes. An estimate of in-situ normal fracture compliance, ZN, was obtained from the log and crosshole data, in 4 different ways, using effective medium theories as well as the displacement discontinuity theory. An additional estimate of ZN was obtained from a separate borehole test site constructed in fractured Devonian meta-sediments at Reskajeage, Cornwall, UK. These fractures were much larger in size than those observed at Tytherington quarry. From the above field and laboratory measurements, fracture compliance was shown to increase approximately linearly with the size of the fractures. In addition, a study of crosshole seismic attenuation was performed at Tytherington quarry. Q was found to be frequency dependent. This frequency dependence was interpreted as being due to scattering rather than intrinsic attenuation.

Correlates and Predictors of Medication Noncompliance in Patients with SchizophreniaDuncan, Julianne Christine 08 1900 (has links)
The treatment of schizophrenia today consists of a multi-component system of services. Mental health professionals generally agree that anti-psychotic medications are an essential treatment for schizophrenia. However, adherence to medication regimens by patients with schizophrenia is notoriously poor. To identify correlates and predictors of medication compliance, the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS), a semi-structured diagnostic interview, was administered to 90 outpatients with schizophrenia. The results suggest that there are specific variables (i.e., mood symptoms, psychotic symptoms, and socio-demographic variables) that predict medication compliance. In addition, the confirmation of these variables was effective (90.0%) at identifying non-compliant patients. The results suggest that schizophrenia is a complex disorder composed of heterogeneous symptoms. However, a specific group of symptoms is proposed which may provide a screening measure for predicting patients who are likely to be non-compliant with their medications.

Důvěra v trestní spravedlnost a kompliance v ČR / Confidence in criminal justice and compliance in the Czech RepublicHomolová, Pavla January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is aimed at normative and instrumental aspects of compliance with the law and cooperation with the criminal justice system in the Czech society, namely trust in the police and criminal courts and their perceived legitimacy, personal morality and perceived risk of sanctions. Its purpose was to empirically verify the revised Tyler's procedural justice model of compliance as suggested by Jackson et al. (2011) within the Czech context. A review of literature on the topic implied potential constraints to validity of the model in the Czech society, mainly in respect to low levels of trust and legitimacy of the police and courts. Nevertheless, the empirical analysis based on structural equation modelling with use of two representative datasets (ESS Round 5 2010, Bezpečnostní rizika 1999) indicates trust in police procedural fairness to be - in contrast to fear of sanctions - a strong factor in predicting compliance. The obligation to obey the law shaped mainly by trust in procedural fairness and personal morality appear to be comparatively the most important predictors of compliance in the Czech Republic. The model was not significant in case of courts nor for the 1999 dataset, probably due to poor internal consistency of some constructs. Keywords confidence, legitimacy, criminal justice, compliance

Mothers' Communication Style and the Development of Child Compliance and Noncompliance During the Third Year of LifeSohr-Preston, Sara 22 May 2006 (has links)
Learning to comply with parental commands and requests is an important developmental achievement during toddlerhood. Although more responsive parenting often is associated with increases in children's compliance during the toddler years, the role of mothers' and toddlers' language abilities on change in compliance has largely been ignored. The current study addressed this gap using a sample of low-income, primarily African American mothers and toddlers (N = 55). Two models examining the role of receptive vocabulary were evaluated. First, mothers with higher receptive vocabulary scores were hypothesized to display more warm responsive communication in a teaching situation, which would be related to higher children's receptive vocabulary scores, and increased child compliance from age 2 to 3. Conversely, mothers with lower receptive vocabulary scores were expected to use more hostile intrusive communication, or communication patterns that would predict lower receptive vocabulary scores in children and increases in noncompliance over the third year. While direct associations were supported linking mothers' communication style with mothers' receptive vocabulary and change in compliance and noncompliance from age 2 to age 3, mediational hypotheses were not supported. The results of this study, while limited by small sample size, indicate that mothers' use of warm responsive or hostile intrusive communication in teaching situations affects their toddlers' development of compliance and noncompliance during the third year of life.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reasons for incompliance with treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) with nasal continuous airway pressure (nCPAP). The overall compliance was 65,4 %. The success of the nCPAP-Therapy in patients with OSAS is basically influenced by the individual level of psychological stain and the side effects of nCPAP-Therapy. Patients with less OSAS have less benefit from the nCPAP-Therapy than patients with a high level of psychological stain. The severity of OSAS was shown in a high respiratory disturbance index (RDI) or a low arterial oxygen saturation. The severe OSAS group experienced a larger improvement. The incompliant group had less objective and subjective benefit. They did not tolerate the side effects in the same way as the sever OSAS group did. They complained more about local disturbances from the nasal mask and had a significant less improvement of daytime sleepiness (p=0,004). The increasing quality of live, as the severe group showed, was not found in these patients. Incompliant patients are dissatisfied with the therapy. They make use of humidification or a steady increase of the ventilation pressure to make it more comfortable. However they do not reach the same level of satisfaction as the compliant group. Finally, the dissatisfaction of the incompliant group leads to a significant worse evaluation of the nasal mask (p=0,009), respirator (p=0,003) and the nCPAP-therapy all in all.

Compliance level to mobile health research application in cardiovascular patientsMeng, Emma 13 June 2019 (has links)
PURPOSE: This thesis intends to evaluate the factors which positively and negatively influence patient compliance to performing weekly home-based digital 6-minute-walk-tests (d6MWT) using a smartphone and smart watch.
PROBLEM: Long term patient engagement in mobile health apps have proven to be a challenge to maintain. In this thesis, factors that influence patient engagement will be identified when it comes to retaining participants that are using the VascTrac mobile health research application.
METHODS: Patient compliance will be calculated based on how many d6MWT are completed out of the expected total. The population is split into four levels of compliance groups from least compliant (0-25% compliance (Group A)) to most compliant (75.1-100% compliance (Group D)). “Open Walk” and survey data are collected and compared amongst these groups to see if there are any direct relationships that could be found. An “End of Study Survey” is also conducted to better understand the reasons behind differing compliance levels.
RESULTS: The overall compliance level is 66.1% for all comers with half of the patients scoring above 80%. Patients with higher compliance tend to have a higher weekly “Open Walk” average (correlation coefficient = 0.3). The average of weekly “Open Walk” is 0.53 walks/week.
CONCLUSION: Factors that negatively affect whether patients would be compliant to doing the weekly d6MWT are medical issues, technical difficulties, hospitalization, and lack of motivation. Being motivated and having a desire for self-improvement positively influences compliance levels. Decrease use of walking aids correlates to higher compliance and being smartphone naïve at beginning of study correlates to lower compliance. The other factors (age, co-morbidities, smoking habit, etc.) considered did not predict compliance levels.

The perceived fairness of turnover tax in the South African tax systemGluckman, Adam 15 March 2013 (has links)
South Africa implemented a simplified Turnover Tax system with effect from the
commencement of years of assessment 1 March 2009 in order to help improve the culture of
tax compliance. To date the number of applicants has not been significant and a potential
reason for this is that it is not fair. Fairness and equality within a tax system is important in
order to discourage evasion. The purpose of this research is to explore the perceived fairness
of the current Turnover Tax system. Using the principles of a fair tax system as advanced by
Adam Smith (1776) a correspondence survey was issued to identify whether the Turnover
Tax principles enhance or undermine fairness. The criticisms and provisions of the Sixth
Schedule to the Income Tax Act No. 58 of 1962 were investigated to determine whether
Adam Smith’s (1776) maxims are promoted or undermined and in turn whether they are
perceived as being fair or not. Based on the responses and analysis of the survey, it was
deduced that the Turnover Tax system is not being perceived as completely fair. As a result
changes need to be implemented to in order to improve the overall compliance and
effectiveness of the tax.

WHO staging, adherence to haart and abnormal cervical smears amongst HIV-infected women attending Dr Yusuf Dadoo HospitalKatumba, Appolinaire Ciamalenga January 2014 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the
Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of
Medicine in Family Medicine. / Introduction
South Africa has more people living with HIV than any other country in the world.1 Women infected with HIV have a high risk in the development of cervical dysplasia and cancer of the cervix more so than women who are not infected.2,3
Methods
A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out by reviewing cervical smears of HIV positive women in a district hospital. Three hundred and ninety cervical Pap smears were classified according to the Bethesda system. Adherence was measured by the patient’s report and viral load. Data was collected through the use of self administered questionaire and data capture sheet.
Results
The prevalence of abnormal Pap smears was 57 per cent and LSIL was the commonest abnormality seen (142/390, 36%). Eighty-four per cent (328/390) had stage 1 WHO-HIV classification. WHO stage 3 participants seemed to be three times more likely to have abnormal Pap smears than those with WHO stage 1 (OD 3.3, STD. error 1.70, p=0.018, 95% CI 1.23-9.04). Abnormal pap smears were seen more in participants with CD4 cell count ≤ 350 cells/μL as compared to participants with CD4 cell count ≥ 500 cells/μL { 122/172, (71.00 %) vs 48/117, (41.03%), p-0.000, 95% CI : 0.09-0.37}. Similarly, participants who did not use HAART had more abnormal results as compared to those who used HAART {42/60(70.00%) vs 180/330 (55.00%), p-0.028, 95% CI 0.28-0.93}.Adherence to HAART did not show any link with abnormal smears.
Conclusion
The more immune-suppressed a woman is, the higher the risk of developing cervical cancer precursors. The high risk group in this study was found to be the participants with the CD4
cell count of ≤ 350 cells/μL and the viral load ≥1000 copies/mm3. The self-reported adherence level did not show any impact.

O regime internacional de combate à lavagem de dinheiro: da jurificação à efetividade / The international anti-money laundering regime: from legalization to effectivenessAnselmo, Márcio Adriano 18 May 2015 (has links)
The international system has been witnessing the consolidation of an transnational moneylaundering enforcement regime, built upon contemporary International Law premises. Such system tackles a multifaceted world order which one can attest by spotting the progressive protagonism of both subnational actors and non-governmental organizations and the resulting relativization of States functions historically the main vector of the international relations. The aforementioned phenomenon gives room to a jurification process lead by FATF soft law. Accordingly, this works analyzes the historical development of money laundering and the formation of its respective legal antagonists, such as the United Nation System treaties and soft law a paradigm consubstantiated by the launch of FATF. It examines FATF recommendations, the structuring of an international money-laundering enforcement regime and the organisms regional projections, generally focused on the expansion of its operating spectrum and outreach. It studies the members and non-members assessment procedure and their sanctioning process based on the enrollment of noncooperative countries, in order to highlight their role as compliance vectors. Lastly, it glances compliance through the Brazilian legal system, the internalization of FATF recommendations since money launderings criminalization so far as to the administrative arrangement of regulatory bodies (COAF, Central Bank, Private Insurances Superintendence, and so forth) and of the Financial Intelligence Unit, in order to highlight the structural changes made to the domestic legislation so that it adapts itself to international requirements.

The socioeconomic level of hypertensive patients from the Health Basic Units in the west of Sao Paulo city.Taveira, Luzí Aparecida Faleiros 08 December 2005 (has links)
Introduction: A lot of factors can interfere at the adherence in the treatment and consequently control of the disease and detached among them the socioeconomic context where the hypertension people living. Objectives: To make up the people with the hypertension attending in the health basic units in agree with the socioeconomic level and the biosocial economics variables such as believes, attitudes, knowledge about the disease and treatment, lack and interruption of the treatment; and associating the socioeconomic level with these variables. Casuistic and Methods: The study was realized on three health basic units in the west region of Sao Paulo city. To economic survey was done a calculating of the accumulated capital assets from the sum up of the domestics appliances prizes in the patient residence divided for twelve and on the minimum salary value for equivalence of the monthly acquisitive power. The data were processed in the system of significance adopted were 0.05. Results: Were studied 440 hypertensive patients. The great majority were females (66%), white colour (51%), married (56,8%), with fundamental degree (52%), body mass index 29,99±6,0 kg/ m², 57±12 years of age and familiar income of 1 to 3 minimum salary monthly (43,6%). From the total of studied hypertensive patients with the interrupted the treatment (34,8%) was verified whom less significant way (p<0.05) those with the coloured television. In relationship no attendance to the medical appointment have significant association (p<0.05) with duplex freezer, those who have major posses of theses domestic appliances were less absent the medical consults. The hypertensive patients that have not agreed with the belief that "they can not do anything about the high blood pressure" showed the accumulated capital assets index with the values significantly more elevated (1.25± 0.36 vs 1.17±0.35, p<0.05). About the attitudes to the treatment, the hypertensive patients to referred never were late to a medical appointment showed accumulated capital assets index with lower values (1.20±0.3 vs 1.31± 0.32, p<0.05). In the evaluation of the patients with How to feel with the life" the reference with sadness have a association with accumulated capital assets index with lower values (0.98 ± 0.35 vs 1.28 ± 0.36 e 1.25±0.32, p< 0.05). Conclusion: The economic situation of the hypertensive patients is linked with some aspects related to the adherence of treatment.
