'Forgotten shopping, lost keys and hearts which forget to beat' : an exploration of nurses' conceptualisation of dementia

Rhynas, Sarah Janet January 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores nurses’ conceptualisation of dementia and discusses the relationship between these understandings and nursing practice. Using the reflexive sociological approach of French scholar Pierre Bourdieu, the study seeks to advance practice through the enhancement of theoretical understandings. Data were collected in a range of inpatient clinical areas in Scotland using focus groups, individual interviews and observation. A range of nurses contributed, reflecting views and understandings from inpatient areas run by both general medical and mental health services. Nurses were found to conceptualise dementia in four main ways; as a disease, as a memory problem, as confusion and finally as a journey. These four conceptualisations are addressed in turn and the ways in which they inform and relate to practice are discussed. Limitations to practice arising from the nurses conceptualisations are also highlighted. Dominant approaches to care are outlined throughout the thesis, with the medical model, individualised care, person-centred dementia care and palliative care all being discussed in light of the nurses’ understandings of dementia. Throughout the thesis the work of Pierre Bourdieu shapes the analysis and presentation of data. Relationships within the social world, structures of society and of inpatient settings along with explicit reflection on the personal experiences and position of the researcher inform the work. Concepts of field, capital and habitus permeate the discussion and help to explore issues and understandings from both practice and theory. While literature on specific approaches to dementia care, treatments and relationships between patients, carers and family members form a substantial and growing body of dementia literature, information about nurses and their understandings of dementia has previously been unexplored. This study demonstrates the range of views held by nurses and the influences of education, structures of the clinical setting and ward culture in shaping those understandings. The importance of nurses’ conceptualisations of dementia in shaping their care of patients is demonstrated through the analysis and has the potential to inform and enhance practice development for dementia patients in a variety of inpatient settings.

"Writing for your mother is more important than writing for the queen of England" : En undersökning av samtida ugandisk litteratur och desssamhälleliga roll

Järverot, Eira January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate the role of literature in the Ugandan society. It uses Bourdieus field theory and the book The Rules of Art to analyze a handful of interviewes with people on different positions on the literary field in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The interviews were collected by the author of this thesis in the beginning of 2015. The thesis examines the overall conditions on the literature market, the hierarchies and the character of the literature. In addition to field theory, it uses post-colonial theory, and Ngûgî Wa Thiong'os' Decolonising the mind to investigate the languages and styles of the literature.  To investigate the literature outside of the educated circles and intellectual spheres, the concept of the literature as merely printed and publicated needs to be questioned, since there is also an existing body of oral literature in the country. Amongst the actors on the literature field there is an ambition for the literature to be a progressive force in the society. However the study shows that hierarchies on the literature field pushes the written and publicated literature further away from the general person. This also due to the limitations of the written literature, since the possibilities to access the literature is highly dependant on the income, literacy and educational level of the receiver.

Den ensidiga mångkulturen : bibliotekariers syn på litteratur i svensk översättning / The one-sided multiculture : librarians views on literature in Swedish translation

Axel, Nilsson January 2016 (has links)
This Bachelor's thesis seeks to illuminate the onesided cultural leanings in literary translations in libraries. Through semi-structured interviews it seeks to explore the view of librarians on the possibilities and obstructions in providing library users with literature of a wide cultural spectrum. In particular, this paper focuses on the dominance of Anglo-Saxon literature in comparison to literature from other geographical and cultural areas. The paper relies on the field, symbolic capital, consecration and habitus theories created by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu in its attempt to bring light on the workings of translations, marketing and user-requests and their influence on library collections. By comparing the answers from the interviews with these theories it finds that libraries generally try to adapt their collection and modify their purchases of new media to fit their user's requests and needs. It also finds that the users themselves are generally influenced by the media. In other words, while the libraries may try to keep a broad cultural and lingual collection of literature the users do not request non-Anglo-Saxon literature in particular. Therefore it draws the conclusion that more studies are needed on the workings of user requests and on the range of literary translations provided by publishers as well as their exposure in the media.

Extended mothering : maternal influences in daughters' higher education

Cooper, Linda January 2014 (has links)
As part of the process of widening participation in higher education there has been an accelerated growth in women’s access to undergraduate study. The main aim of this research is to understand generational differences in women’s opportunities to attend university in England. The mother-daughter relationship is used to explore the role played by mothers in their daughters’ education beyond compulsory schooling, at a time when transition from secondary education to university has become commonplace. An investigation is made into the strategies mothers are employing to improve their daughters’ higher education choices and prospects. Using a qualitative methodology, paired mothers and their adult daughters have shared their views through in-depth interviews that discuss education, class, feminism and mothering. The mothers’ home and school backgrounds are examined in relation to their daughters’ upbringings, to consider differences in social mobility between the generations. A Bourdieusian framework is used to provide a theoretical underpinning, including how middle class values are being reproduced through mothers’ transmission of their economic, social and cultural capital. Research findings reveal that mothers are providing their daughters with extended advantage to access a university education, often in contrast to their own backgrounds. Mothers are simultaneously maintaining their daughters’ lifestyle during the study years, supporting their daughters during a period of extended adolescence. This enhanced mothering practice is promoting a transformation in familial outcomes and challenges the historical norm of fathers’ class background determining women’s imagined futures. Overall the research found that despite significant social change the daughters’ generation is failing to engage with feminist issues. The daughters’ decisions to maintain stereotypical female roles challenge the continuing progress of equal opportunities for women.

Konstnärsbubblan : En kvalitativ undersökning om att vara konstnär i Värmland / The Artist bubble : A qualitative survey of being an artist in Värmland

Karlsson, Katrin January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate some visual artists' experiences of establishing themselves and acting as professional artists based in the Swedish region of Värmland. To do this I have used Bourdieu's theories about fields of cultural production. I have interviewed four different visual artists in Värmland to get a view of how they have established themselves in the field of art. I have used qualitative content analysis to see what has been significant for their establishment. The results of this study showed that social relationships, economy and cultural capital matters to establish as an artist. The study also showed that the degree of will and driving force among the artists matters a lot when it comes to achieve success in the field of art.

Asociatividad en una agrupación gremial de mujeres micro y pequeñas empresarias: un análisis social desde la perspectiva de la teoría de los campos de Pierre Bourdieu

Coya Costa, Rita 11 1900 (has links)

The symbolic dimensions of wartime rape : a case study of Kamanyola Community, Bukavu/South-Kivu Province (Democratic republic of Congo).

Karhikalembu, Alice Mushagalusa 13 June 2014 (has links)
To understand the persistence of wartime rape that the DRC has experienced during the sixteen years old civil war, this study undertakes a critical analysis of the concept of ‘symbolic violence’ as proposed by Bourdieu. I have suggested that this concept [symbolic violence] as developed by Bourdieu needs other dimensions of definition in order to be applied to other social crises outside the western world. Shaping a link between wartime rape and its symbolic dimensions enables us to clearly articulate that the symbolic order brought through the practice of wartime rape by perpetrators does not remain unchallenged by the dominated who are direct and indirect victims of wartime rape. For this purpose, data were collected from ordinary community members, community leaders; a doctor and nurse form Panzi Hospital, an army General, a lawyer and some NGOs members working in the area of study (Kamanyola)through in-depth interviews. Observation and document analysis have also been used in the process of data collection. As a result the study found that wartime rape, at first, is a threat that perpetrators use to impose their own symbolic power upon males from the enemy groups through the rape of females from the same enemy groups. Therefore, this physical attack [war rape] against females impacts the victims as individuals, the community and the whole nation. This helps to suggest that physical violence is also symbolic violence. This is rendered possible through social and cultural patriarchal norms shared by both victims and perpetrators. As a result, family and community ties as well as marriage – as constitutive elements of the community’s symbolic order – are directly fractured by wartime rape. Forcing women to be economically unproductive was another strategy to undermine community ties which were built through community-based activities. Secondly, the strategic use of war rape comes to counter the idea of symbolic violence as being just soft or an invisible violence but under some circumstances a symbolic violence might produce physical harm.Thirdly, the study found that, patriarchy as the dominant social and cultural order is resisted by the dominated (women respondents in majority) now that it is associated to wartime rape. Because of this, I proposed that symbolic orders are not always taken for granted; they maybe resisted by the dominated. Based on the findings, this research report advocates for a more gender inclusive policy to encourage women to participate in the making of decisions which concern their lives as main victims of wartime rape in DRC generally and in Kamanyola in particular.

He contrasts as antithesis to the original project his concept of habitus. Our research follows this Bourdieusian assertion and tests its pertinence. The Sartrian original project starts from a premise of the ontological freedom of the being of which Bourdieu, without affirming it, in our view, uses it to base the influences operated by the field, translated in the habitus. That means: There is more of Sartre in Bourdieu than he may affirms. The conceptual constellation of Pierre Bourdieu transpasses the work of Sartre.
