Foreign direct investment inflows and economic growth in SADC countries : a panel data approach

This dissertation examines the causal relationship between inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and economic growth (GDP) in SADC countries. The study investigates, within a panel data context, whether causation is short-term, long-term or both; and explores whether the causal relationship between the two variables differs according to income level. The study covered a panel of 15 SADC countries over the period 1980-2012. In order to assess whether the causal relationship between FDI inflows and economic growth is dependent on the level of income, the study divided the SADC countries into two groups, namely, the low-income and the middleincome countries. The study used the recently developed panel data analysis methods to examine this causal relationship. It adopted a three stage approach, which consists of panel unit root, panel cointegration and Granger causality to examine the dynamic causal relationship between the two variables. Panel unit root results show that both variables in the two SADC country groups were integrated of order one. Panel cointegration tests showed that the variables for low-income country group were not cointegrated, while the variables for the middle-income countries were cointegrated. Since the low-income country group panels were not cointegrated, Grangercausality tests were conducted within a VAR framework, while causality tests for the middleincome country group were conducted within an ECM framework. Panel Granger causality results for the low-income countries showed no evidence of causality in either direction. However, for the middle-income countries’ panel, there was evidence of a unidirectional causal flow from GDP to FDI in both the long- and short- run. The study concludes that the FDI-led growth hypothesis does not apply to SADC countries. The results imply that the recent high economic growth rates recorded in the SADC region, especially middle-income countries, have been attracting FDI. In other words, it is economic growth that drives FDI inflows into the SADC region, and not vice versa. Title: Monitoring of influence of individual segments of a teaching unit of physical education on fitness of girls from seventh grade of elementary school. Aim: The aim of the empirical part is to monitor the proportional representation of the motoric activities during the time given in the lessons of physical education of the seventh grade girls, and along with the chosen methods of testing of these individuals, to prove or disprove possible influence of the composition of the P.E. lessons on the chosen segments of their fitness. Methods: Various methods were used for testing the considered sample. These were the standardized motoric tests (intense forward bend when sitting, place-jump with legs together, endurance in a pull-up, hand grip) which investigate the chosen segments of the fitness. Another method used was the bioimpedance which measures the parameters of body composition. The data were recollected quantitatively and the results were also processed quantitatively by means of statistic parameters, such as arithmetic mean, variation span and determinative deviation. 臺灣短期利率衍生性金融商品價格發現之研究

本研究的目的在探討台灣貨幣市場短天期利率衍生性金融商品(30天期商業本票利率期貨、90天遠期利率協定〈以下簡稱FRA〉)對其即期利率(30天期商業本票利率、90天期商業本票利率)之『價格發現』功能。可由兩方面來檢定利率遠期協定或利率期貨市場之『價格發現』功能:(1)市場效率性:FRA、利率期貨價格可否作為未來到期日時即期利率之不偏預期;(2)FRA、利率期貨與即期利率價格間之領先-落後關係。 選取各交易日的日資料作為觀察值。在研究方法上採用ADF單根檢定、效率性檢定、向量自我相關模型(VAR)、Granger因果關係檢定、誤差正交檢定、共整合檢定、誤差修正模型。 結論結果發現,90天遠期利率協定(FRA)對90天期商業本票利率進行『價格發現』的分析,以「市場效率性檢定」的結果顯示此市場無效率,亦即無『價格發現』,可能是因為買FRA的機構投資人目的不是持有到到期,僅為判斷短期利率走勢方向,可能買個幾天欲賺取差價利潤,所以非為未來現貨價格的不偏預期;以「領先-落後關係分析」,顯示其無『價格發現』,此一結果的可能解釋是由於台灣FRA市場非集中市場公開交易,交易量尚不及現貨市場。因此市場資訊的不透明可能使遠期契約價格不如現貨價格般具代表性。 30天期商業本票利率期貨對30天期商業本票利率進行『價格發現』的分析,以「市場效率性檢定」結果顯示在到期日前適當的期間(24~36天)此市場具有效率性,即存在『價格發現』;而「領先-落後關係分析」結果則無明顯的領先落後,不具有期貨領先現貨的『價格發現』,此部分我們可能提出的解釋為:在30天期商業本票利率期貨剛推出不久,一般市場上的交易者大多是從事避險交易,鮮少進行投機行為,所以不具有短天的領先落後關係,其顯示價格發現是在考慮市場存在風險溢酬下,到期前24~36天的利率期貨價格是未來現貨價格的預期。

Le travail réalisé dans le cadre de cette thèse s’intègre bien dans le domaine de la télédétection de l’environnement maritime. Il porte notamment, d’une part sur l’étude de l’interaction d’une onde électromagnétique avec une surface maritime en présence d’une cible complexe et observée en configuration bi-statique. D’autre part l’étude est complétée par l’étude et l’analyse de l’influence des différents paramètres à la fois liés à la cible et aussi à l’environnement. Dans ce contexte d’étude, le présent travail s’articule autour de deux volets importants. Le premier vise l’étude et la simulation de la Surface Equivalente Radar(SER) d’une cible complexe placée dans son environnement maritime. Et un deuxième volet applicatif traite l’imagerie radar ISAR d’une scène observée, avec prise en compte des cibles présentes sur la surface. Afin de traiter le premier point, le modèle électromagnétique retenu est basé sur une combinaison de méthodes asymptotiques (Optique Physique (OP), Optique Géométrique (OG), Méthode des courants équivalents (MCE)). Pour l’étude de l’influence de la surface de mer sur la réponse électromagnétique de la cible, nous avons opté pour une représentation de la scène (cible+surface de mer) par un ensemble de facettes triangulaires. Dans ce cadre, la cible discrétisée par un maillage triangulaire est générée à l’aide d’un outil de CAO (CATIA V5), quant à la surface de la mer, elle est générée en utilisant le spectre de mer d’Elfouhaily (et le modèle de Debye pour la prise en compte des paramètres diélectriques de l’eau de mer). Enfin, pour l’application de l’imagerie radar ISAR, le calcul de la SER de la cible navale a été effectué en considérant une nouvelle représentation de la cible en parallélépipèdes. La méthodologie proposée a été évalué via des simulations ainsi que des expérimentations sur un modèle générique d’un navire. / The work presented here interset with remote sensing of the maritime environment.It espacially carried with the study of electromagnetic scattering by sea surface with the presence of the target. This study is done in bistatic configuration. So, it is completed by the analysis of the influence of various parameters related to the target and also to the environment. In this context, this work focuses on two important parts. The first is the study and simulation of Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a complex target placed in the maritime environment.And the second part deals with the application of ISAR radar imagery of an observed scene, with consideration of target on the sea surface. We have opted for a combination between Physical Optics (PO), Geometrical Optics (GO) and Equivalent Edge Currents (ECM) (POGO/ EMC) to estimate the RCS. In order to take into account the infuence of sea surface, we have genereted a 2D sea surface from the Elfouhaily spectrum. In order to integrate the target into the scenario (the target in its environment, radar imagery), we propose a parallelepiped representation of the naval taget and RCS calculation. The proposed methodology was evaluated through simulations and measurements on a generic model of a ship.

Optimizing Engineered Tendon Development via Structural and Chemical Signaling Cues

<p>The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons in the shoulder that function to lift and rotate the arm. Rotator cuff tendon tears are increasingly common: more than 545,000 rotator cuff surgeries occur annually in the US. However, treatment is often complicated by disorganized collagen matrix formed via fibrosis and results in high re-tear rates. Tendon tissue engineering seeks to solve the problem using biomaterials to promote neo-tendon formation to augment repair or regenerate tendon. However, while current biomaterials provide the opportunity to improve tendon healing, they frequently still exhibit fibrosis in preclinical studies. Therefore, a critical need exists to understand the mechanisms of aligned collagen formation when designing biomaterials for tendon tissue engineering. Matrix architecture and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4 (TRPV4) regulate aligned collagen formation during tenogenesis in vitro, but the mechanism remains to be determined. Recently, TRPV4 stimulation was found to induce nuclear localization and activation of transcriptional co-activators Yes-associated protein (YAP). YAP expression is upregulated during tendon development, a process characterized by aligned collagen formation, and in response to physiological mechanical stimulation, suggesting it could play an important role in tendon. The objective of this work is to improve tissue engineering strategies and progress toward making a device that regenerate tendon after injury. Aim 1 incorporates tendon-derived matrix into synthetic polymer scaffolds to add biological signaling cues to induce tenogenesis. Aim 2 uses a 2D photolithography system (microphotopatterning) to optimize architectural and structural cues to promote stem cell differentiation toward tenogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic lineages. Aim 3 investigates dynamic tensile loading protocols to promote collagen matrix synthesis and improve engineered tendon mechanical function. Aim 4 investigates the role of TRPV4 and YAP in collagen alignment during engineered tendon development.</p>

A plan-do-check-act framework for WEEE and RoHS : a model for implementing WEEE and RoHS by integrating eco-design factors and activities into business operation and strategy.

Eco-design is relatively new and fast growing field of research due to its vital importance to the manufacturing industry and its related environmental issues such as reducing waste, and CO2 emission. A major EU programme relating to the environment is the waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. The (WEEE) directive specifies ten categories and a voltage range which is up to 1.000 volts AC or 1.500volts DC. The developed framework came for the implementation of Eco-design principles that helps to take into account the adaption of the (WEEE) directive and the restriction of hazard substances (RoHS) used in electrical and electronic equipments. As a result of identify gaps and needs such as a lack of a comprehensive Eco-design framework and the need to integrate it to the normal business operation. In this research the PDCA framework for Eco-design and WEEE directive will be discussed. The framework will encompass all of the Eco-design¿s implementation and integration factors and activities such as WEEE and RoHS directives, Eco-design management, Environmental legislations, Eco-design tools and considerations. The literature review covers the topic of Eco-design¿s related issues, and WEEE and RoHS directives rules. Based on comprehensive questionnaire survey of Eco-design, WEEE and RoHS issues and activities among a sample of environmentally aware companies, statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS software. Then the findings of the survey triangulated with the findings of the literature review formed the basis of the design and implementation plan of the proposed framework
