Frontal Alpha and Beta EEG Power Asymmetry and Iowa Gambling Task Performance

Frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha (α) asymmetry may index the activation of lateralized affect and motivation systems in humans. Resting EEG activation was measured and its relationship to Iowa gambling task (IGT) performance was evaluated. No effects were found for α power asymmetry. However, beta (β) power asymmetry, an alternative measure of resting EEG activation, was associated with the number of risky decisions made in the early portion of the task. Additionally, IGT deck selection patterns suggest there are at least three distinct performance styles in healthy individuals. Interestingly, β power asymmetry contradicts performance predictions based on accepted frontal asymmetry affect and motivation models.

Gaze Fixation during the Perception of Visual and Auditory Affective Cues

The accurate integration of audio-visual emotion cues is critical for social interactions and requires efficient processing of facial cues. Gaze behavior of typically developing young adults was measured via eye-tracking during the perception of dynamic audio-visual emotion (DAVE) stimuli. Participants were able to identify basic emotions (angry, fearful, happy, neutral) and determine the congruence of facial expression and prosody. Perception of incongruent videos resulted in increased reaction times and emotion identification consistent with the facial expression. Participants consistently demonstrated a featural processing approach across all tasks, with a significant preference for the eyes. Evidence of hemispheric lateralization was indicated by preferential fixation to the left (happy, angry) or right eye (fearful). Fixation patterns differed according to the facially expressed emotion, with the pattern that emerged during fearful movies supporting the significance of automatic threat processing. Finally, fixation pattern during the perception of incongruent movies varied according to task instructions.

Temperament, Joint Engagement, and Language Skills in Toddlers

This study investigated how emotion-regulation would moderate the relationship between shyness and joint engagement and how joint engagement would mediate the relationship between shyness and language skills. Fifty-three mother-child dyads were observed in the laboratory according to the Communication Play Protocol (Adamson & Bakeman, 1999) when the toddlers were 24 and 30 months of age. Mothers completed the Temperament Behavior Assessment Questionnaire-Revised (Rothbart & Goldsmith, unpublished). Toddlers also completed the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-III (PPVT-III; Dunn & Dunn, 1997) and Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT; Williams, 1997). The relationship between shyness and the percentage of time spent in non-symbol-infused coordinated joint engagement was moderated by a toddler’s ability to self-soothe. Shyer toddlers had significantly lower receptive language scores than less shy toddlers, and this relationship was partially mediated by the percentage of time toddlers spent in symbol-infused supported and coordinated joint engagement states. Is Core Affect a Natural Kind?

In the scientific study of the emotions the goal is to find natural kinds. That is, to find categories about which interesting scientific generalizations and predictions can be formed. Core affect is dimensional approach to the emotions which claims that emotions emerge from the more basic psychological processes of valence (pleasant/unpleasant) and arousal (activation/deactivation). Lisa Feldman Barrett (2006b) has recently argued that the discrete emotion approach has failed to find natural kinds and thus should be dismissed as a failed paradigm. She offers core affect as an alternative theory that will better capture natural kinds in emotionally salient phenomena. In this thesis I evaluate Barrett’s claim on the basis of a philosophically robust understanding of natural kinds and a careful assessment of the empirical evidence. I argue that while core affect is not a natural kind, subsets of core affect space may be natural kinds.

Exploring the Relationship between Emotion-Focused Coping and Posttraumatic Stress among Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence

Women who have experienced violence in their intimate partnerships have consistently reported poorer physical and mental health and higher medical care utilization than women who have not experienced intimate partner violence. Because of the many deleterious impacts of relationship abuse, investigations into coping processes among women who have experienced intimate partner violence take on heightened importance. The complexity of circumstances and the unique responses to intimate partner violence indicate that women employ as many coping strategies as are available to them at the time. Effective coping behaviours and the recovery environment are critical for battered women’s positive adjustment (Carlson, 1997; Sullivan & Bybee, 1999). This study examined the relationships between emotion-focused coping, symptoms of post-traumatic stress and exposure to intimate partner violence in a sample of 670 women across the Prairie Provinces. The Composite Abuse Scale, Emotion-Focused Coping Strategies questionnaire, and the Posttraumatic Stress Checklist were used to measure the variables. Findings confirmed a strong correlation between greater exposure to abuse and symptoms of posttraumatic stress. They also confirmed that greater use of emotion-focused coping strategies was associated with escalation of abuse and more symptoms of posttraumatic stress within this group of women. This study adds to the current body of literature on ways women cope with intimate partner violence.

Attention to the periphery attenuates the EPN and LPP

Current research shows that emotions have an important role in guiding attention and cognitions especially when the emotional stimuli are affective. Load theory proposes that when the perceptual load on attention is sufficiently high, irrelevant emotional stimuli is no longer attended to and thus will not produce a distracting effect. In this study 18 participants performed two discrimination tasks where their attention was manipulated spatially. To investigate the effect of spatial attention on ERP components, emotional pictures in 14 different semantic categories were shown while EEG was recorded. The results indicate that a successful perceptual load was achieved, reflected in the behavioral data that show there was a clear difference in performance between tasks. Further the results indicate that a strong effect was achieved in the mean amplitudes of both EPN and LPP corresponding to the semantic categories of pictures. Critically directing the attention to the periphery while emotionally salient pictures were presented attenuated the mean amplitude of both EPN and LPP.

Studiens syften är att undersöka musikens inverkan på människan i skolan och livet. Dessutom att undersöka de möjligheter musik och musikämnet skapar i skolsammanhang. Metoden är en komparativ litteraturstudie, och det finns texter representerade från ett antal olika områden, exempelvis medicinska, neurologiska, pedagogiska, sociologiska, och terapeutiska. Utifrån fem böcker som ingått i kurslitteratur, utkristalliserade sig fyra kategorier, ”Musik och intelligens”, ”Musik och människa”, ”Musik och hälsa” och ”Musik i skola”. Efter fördjupning i dessa kategorier finns tjugotre böcker representerade i studien. Resultatet visar att musik har en bred inverkan på människor. Musik har både en fysiologisk och psykologisk påverkan och är en viktig del av det samhälle vi lever i. Musikaktiviteter har en inverkan på hjärnans utveckling, människors sociala färdigheter och människors hälsotillstånd. Dessutom har musik en identitetsskapande funktion. I skolan har musik möjlighet att skapa gemenskap och bättre skolmiljöer, utveckla olika intelligenser såsom motoriska, logiska, emotionella, språkliga och utveckla elevers självkännedom och självkänsla. Detta förutsätter regelbundenhet, det vill säga att musikämnet är återkommande genom hela skolgången. Andra förutsättningar är att ämnet är prioriterat och att det finns tid utsatt för progression i ämnet. Regelbundenhet tas även upp som en viktig faktor för att främja god hälsa.

Äldre texter - didaktik och motivation : Didaktisering av ett 1500-talsepos

Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka huruvida vissa didaktiska tillvägagångssätt kan öka motivationen hos gymnasieelever inför studier av äldre texter samt i vilken utsträckning valfrihet och medbestämmande är viktigt inför arbetet med dessa. Könsrelaterade jämförelser görs. Tidigare forskning presenteras och en empirisk kvantitativ undersökning med enkäter genomförs, baserad på SCAS (Swedish Core Affect Scale) i reducerad form. Ett 1500-talsepos presenteras medelst olika didaktiska metoder för elever som löpande noterar graden av motivation på en niogradig skala bestående av adjektivpar.Studien visar att vissa didaktiska tillvägagångssätt ökar elevers motivation. Berättande samt rörliga bilder i kombination med tal och musik visar sig vara de mest stimulerande metoderna, gärna anknytning till universella teman och perspektiv. Studien visar även att endast vissa elever upplever valfrihet och medbestämmande i samband med arbetet med texten som något positivt.

Modeling Continuous Emotional Appraisals of Music Using System Identification

The goal of this project is to apply system identification techniques to model people's perception of emotion in music as a function of time. Emotional appraisals of six selections of classical music are measured from volunteers who continuously quantify emotion using the dimensions valence and arousal. Also, features that communicate emotion are extracted from the music as a function of time. By treating the features as inputs to a system and the emotional appraisals as outputs of that system, linear models of the emotional appraisals are created. The models are validated by predicting a listener's emotional appraisals of a musical selection (song) unfamiliar to the system. The results of this project show that system identification provides a means to improve previous models for individual songs by allowing them to generalize emotional appraisals for a genre of music. The average <i>R</i>² statistic of the best model structure in this project is 7. 7% for valence and 75. 1% for arousal, which is comparable to the <i>R</i>² statistics for models of individual songs.

Sentimentalism, Affective Response, and the Justification of Normative Moral Judgments

Sentimentalism as an ethical view makes a particular claim about moral judgment: to judge that something is right/wrong is to have a sentiment/emotion of approbation/disapprobation, or some kind of positive/negative feeling, toward that thing. However, several sentimentalists have argued that moral judgments involve not only having a specific kind of feelings or emotional responses, but judging that one would be <em>justified</em> in having that feeling or emotional response. In the literature, some authors have taken up the former position because the empirical data on moral judgment seems to suggest that justification is not a necessary prerequisite for making a moral judgment. Even if this is true, however, I argue that justifying moral judgments is still an important philosophic endeavour, and that developing an empirically constrained account of how a person might go about justifying his feelings/emotional responses as reasons for rendering (normative) moral judgments by using a coherentist method of justification is both plausible and desirable.
