Drowning in Data, Starving for Knowledge OMEGA Data Environment

Coble, Keith 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The quantity T&E data has grown in step with the increase in computing power and digital storage. T&E data management and exploitation technologies have not kept pace with this exponential growth. New approaches to the challenges posed by this data explosion must provide for continued growth while providing seamless integration with the existing body of work. Object Oriented Data Management provides the framework to handle the continued rapid growth in computer speed and the amount of data gathered and legacy integration. The OMEGA Data Environment is one of the first commercially available examples of this emerging class of OODM applications.

Gosselin, Jacinthe January 2014 (has links)

Rebels, nudie-cuties, and hipsters : a study of the American genre film archive

Kusnierz, Lauren Ashley 14 October 2014 (has links)
The American Genre Film Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2009 by Tim League, founder and CEO of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. With a sense of rebellion against established film archives, AGFA is dedicated to the collection of 35mm prints of exploitation films from the 1960s-1980s in order to conserve and distribute these neglected films. A confluence of issues including the history of the films in the collection, AGFA’s connection with the Alamo Drafthouse, and influences from the hipster subcultures combine to inform AGFA’s practices and mission. This thesis will explore how the American Genre Film Archive conforms to and rebels against the established archive community by means of its mission and institutional structure. Also, this thesis will explore AGFA as a hipster institution through its collecting and exhibition practices. AGFA’s roles in the wider film archive community and the hipster community converge into an unusual archive serving unusual films. / text

Goetz, Damien 18 December 2000 (has links) (PDF)

A Double Edged Sword: The Effects of Participation in Sports on the African American Community

Wilson, Gregory J, II 01 January 2013 (has links)
Participation in sports has a strong influence on the development of African American youth and the Black community as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to explore the positive and negative effects that participating in sports has on the African American community using previous works and experiments on the topic. Results found that participation in athletics helps African American youth develop important social skills, creates an outlet to keep Black youth off the streets in impoverished neighborhoods, and establishes a vehicle to help Black youth get into college. However, the overemphasized importance of sports within the African American community through the media and Black families themselves has resulted in multiple negative effects including career immaturity, lower academic achievement and the exploitation of the Black intercollegiate athlete.

The Importance of the Coast : A Study of Six Municipalities View of Coast and Nature

Nygren, Emilia January 2017 (has links)
Coastal exploitation causes influences that are detrimental to flora and fauna in the coastal and marine environments. In order to come up with new solutions to environmental problems, knowledge from different disciplines has to be obtained. To achieve a broader view of the problem of coastal exploitation, Stenmark’s theory about the three dimensions was applied: a scientific dimension, a social scientific dimension and a value-based dimension. The latter dimension included four themes that contributed to a further depth in the value-based dimension: values, nature conception, life conception and consequences. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the context in which coastal exploitation was presented and what the six coastal municipalities’ view on coastal exploitation were. The goal was to observe how the municipalities themselves perceive their environmental work and how it is reflected planning in practice. The method consisted of a review of each municipality’s comprehensive plan and an interview with a person from the physical planning sector from each municipality. A discourse analysis was applied to analyse the collected information. The municipalities’ values and views of the coast were two folded because there was a great focus on the human while coastal areas were considered significant and important environments. As there was a two-part view of the coast, there was also an uncertainty between conservation and exploitation. There was an opinion among the municipalities that they were working towards the environmental quality objective, but it did not appear how to achieve the goal. The environmental objective was only expressed by mentioning. The municipalities’ views and values must be clarified in order to know how planning should be practiced, which challenges waits ahead and for the municipality to get a picture of how the society will develop.

Management Control Systems as a Package and the Impact on Organizational Ambidexterity : A Case Study of a R&amp;D Organization in a Swedish Medical Technology Company

Bogered, Gustaf, Rundquist, Christian January 2016 (has links)
Background: The idea of MCSs operating together in a package is not a new concept. However, not many empirical studies have been made where MCSs have been studied as a package despite studies showing the importance in doing so. The assessment of the performance implications of MCSPs has traditionally been limited to financial measures. Theory suggests that the performance of a MCSP ought to be assessed on a broader scale than conventional output measures. Organizational ambidexterity has been positively associated with a broad variety of performance measures and thus it is used as an assessment tool in this study in response to the need for performance measurement on a broader scale than financial output. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the MCSP in two different phases in the case organization and assess how the MCSP in these two phases promotes the organization’s ability to achieve organizational ambidexterity. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative research strategy and is limited to a single case study in a R&amp;D organization within a Swedish medical technology company. Semistructured qualitative interviews have been used to collect empirical data. Conclusion: The MCSP in the two phases is composed of different MCSs that were found to be used differently. Within the MCSP in both phases, several linkages were revealed between control elements and that some MCSs function to achieve the purposes of other MCSs. This study further concludes that the MCSP of the current phase was found to promote organizational ambidexterity better than the MCSP in the previous phase due to it promoting a better balance between exploitation and exploration.

Punishing the poor again? : irregularity, the 'criminalisation of migration' and precarious labour markets in the UK and Germany

Sitkin, Lea Marike January 2014 (has links)
The increasingly punitive nature of immigration control across the Western world and the overrepresentation of foreign nationals in European prisons has revitalised criminological interest in issues of migration. Alessandro De Giorgi (2010: 153) and others contend that restrictive, 'illegalising' immigration admission policies and 'hyper-criminalising' immigration controls create a population of migrant workers on European territory, whose legal precarity makes them ideal fodder for employment in post-Fordist neoliberal labour markets. This thesis refines the neoliberal-materialist analysis of immigration policy, as described most succinctly by De Giorgi (2010), through a comparative case study of the UK and Germany. To this end, it explores the various economic, political and cultural factors that have driven the development of a punitive regulation of immigration in the two countries and compares immigration control practices. It also examines the ways in which immigration status siphons immigrants into precarious work and how this process occurs differently in the UK and Germany. An underlying concern is to examine the extent to which differences in the underlying labour markets of the two countries, as described in Hall and Soskice's (2001) Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) typology, structure differences in the processes outlined in the neoliberal-materialist analysis. While the development of immigration controls is motivated by a wide variety of factors outside of the labour market, the fact that motivating factors are largely shared among countries of the same VoC type suggests some relationship with the underlying economic structure. In addition, the thesis argues that foreigners are vulnerable to specific forms of workplace exploitation and social marginalisation in 'coordinated' Germany because of factors associated with the VoC – a finding that also has important connotations for understanding the more intense overrepresentation of foreign nationals in German prisons. At the same time, it highlights the importance of other cultural and social factors, unique to each country, in the politics of immigration. The final section reverses the previous line of the enquiry by examining whether immigration 'neoliberalises' industrial relations in Germany. It finds that immigration's effects depend, to a significant extent, on the degree to which foreigners are constructed as precarious workers through state policy. In turn, immigration policy's wider effects on the labour market suggest native workers might also have an interest in preventing the precaritisation of their immigrant counterparts. Finally, immigration status may become less and less important in understanding the exploitation of workers in Europe, as citizenship is associated with fewer rights.
