WiBOX - Une passerelle pour une réception robuste de vidéo diffusée via WIMAX et une rediffusion indoor via WIFI

Cette thèse étudie un certain nombre d'outils (rassemblés dans la WiBox) nécessaires pour une réception fiable de vidéo diffusée sur WiMAX, puis rediffusée sur Wifi. Il s'agit de fournir des services WiMAX à des utilisateurs WiFi, avec une qualité de réception vidéo raisonnable, même avec un très faible signal WiMAX. Pour cela, des techniques de décodage conjoint de paquets erronés sont indispensables afin de limiter les retards liés aux retransmissions. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous considérons le problème de la délinéation de paquets agrégés en macro-paquets. Cette opération d'agrégation est réalisée dans de nombreux protocoles afin d'améliorer le rapport en-tête/charge utile des systèmes de communication. Plusieurs méthodes de délinéation sont proposées. Elles exploitent d'une part les informations souples provenant des couches protocolaires basses ainsi que la redondance présente dans les paquets devant être séparés. L'ensemble des successions possibles de paquets au sein d'un macro-paquet est décrit à l'aide d'un trellis. Le problème de délinéation est transformé en un problème d'estimation de l'état d'une variable aléatoire Markovienne, pour lequel de nombreux algorithmes (BCJR, Viterbi) sont disponibles. Cette technique est très efficace mais complexe. De plus, elle nécessite la réception de l'ensemble du macro-paquet, ce qui peut induire des latences importantes. Dans une deuxième étape, nous proposons une technque où le décodage se fait sur une fenêtre glissante contenant une partie du macro-paquet. Un treillis glissant est considéré cette fois. La taille de la fenêtre permet d'ajuster un comproimis entre complexité et efficacité de décodage. Enfin, une méthode de décodage à la volée exploitant un automate à 3 état et des tests d'hypothèses Bayésiens permet de réaliser une délinéation moins efficace, mais sans latence. Ces méthodes sont comparées sur un problème de délinéation de paquets MAC dans des macro-paquets PHY dans WiMAX. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse, nous proposons de réaliser un décodage souple des codes en blocs utilisés dans certaines couches de piles protocolaires pour le multimédia. Cdes sorties souples sont générées afin de permettre un décodage conjoint des en-têtes et de la charge utile au niveau des couches supérieures. Nous avons en particulier étudié des outils de décodage souple ldans le cas de la norme RTP FEC, et avons comparé les performances du décodeur proposé avec des approches classiques de décodage. En résumé, les techniques de décodage conjoint proposées permettent de réduire le nombre de paquets perdus, d'augmenter le nombre de paquets transmis vers les couches applicatives où des décodeurs source-canal conjoints peuvent être utilisés pour améliorer la qualité de la vidéo reçue.

Policy-based routing for mobile ad hoc networks running HTR protocol

The increasing growth of mobile devices in the whole world, and the forecasts for the coming years has been indicated by several reports. Nonetheless, this need for ubiquitous collaboration has brought new possibilities and challenges to the scientific community. Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) emerges in this scenario allowing devices to interconnect autonomously, without the need of a fixed infrastructure, in order to provide communication and information services. Due to such decentralization and the natural constraints of mobile devices, it remains, to this day, a challenge to provide efficient routing for MANETs. In this dissertation we propose new routing enhancements based on policies for MANETs running the HTR protocol. We consider the role(s) a user associated to a device performs within an organization. Hence our policies can guide the routing based on these roles. With this scheme we improve communication according to different business needs and scenario requirements. To this end, we propose a set of policies that affects the routing behavior and present four case studies to present each policy. Then we analyze two policies in terms of end-to-end delay, and nodes’ lifetime. Through simulation we evaluate these metrics while varying parameters such as the amount of nodes participating in the network, the mobility characteristics, and the number of traffic sources. Our results show that it is possible to achieve these goals without causing great impact on the average end-to-end delay and energy consumption, two important metrics in any MANET evaluation. Este trabalho propõe novas melhorias para o roteamento em MANETs que utilizam o protocolo HTR. Também considera o papel que usuários associados aos dispositivos desempenham dentro de uma organização. Desta forma, as políticas desenvolvidas podem guiar o roteamento também com base nestes papéis. Com este esquema, é possível melhorar a comunicação de acordo com necessidades de negócio e requerimentos de cenário. Para este fim, esta dissertação propõe um conjunto de políticas que afetam o comportamento do roteamento e analisa os impactos em termos de atraso, energia gasta e tempo de vida dos nós. Através de simulações, essas métricas são avaliadas também com variação de parâmetros como a quantidade de nós que participam da simulação, as características de mobilidade e o número de fontes de tráfego. Resultados mostram que é possível atingir esses objetivos sem causar grande impacto negativo no atraso fim a fim e no consumo de energia, duas métricas importantes em avaliações de redes MANET. Nós exploramos esses resultados em diversos cenários e detalhamos nossas descobertas, que podem servir como uma perspectiva diferente para futuras aplicações de redes MANET.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF ADAPTIVE ARRAY SYSTEM AND SPACE-TIME BLOCK CODING IN MOBILE WIMAX (802.16e) SYSTEMS

We live in an information hungry age, we generate and process information at a rate never before recorded in the history of mankind. Today’s computing platforms are run on Gigahertz multi-core processors churning out Gigabits streams of data that need to be transmitted as quickly as possible. Often times the source and the destination are mobile which means wired connections are not a choice. This has led to an ever increasing need to develop wireless access technologies that support high throughput regardless of the transmission environment. Till date, many proprietary solutions exist that seek to bridge this gap with little or no support for interoperability. For the sheer scale of development that is required, a standard based solution is the key. The IEEE 802.1x committee oversees the development of standards for wireless systems, it formed the 802.16 working group to develop a standards-based Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) solution. One of the fruits of this effort is the 802.16e standard fondly referred to as mobile WiMAX and it is the subject of study in this thesis. This thesis seeks to analyze the transmission characteristics of two of the antenna systems defined in the standard i.e. Adaptive Beamforming Systems and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Systems. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO): utilizes multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver to provide diversity gain, multiplexing gain or both. Adaptive Antenna Systems (AAS): Adaptive array system uses an antenna array to generate in real-time radiation patterns with the main lobes and/or nulls dynamically tuned to specific directions in order to increase or suppress signal power in that direction. / Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is the acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 set of standards governing Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems. In the history of wireless systems, WiMAX is revolutionary technology as affords its users the Wi-Fi grade throughput and cellular system level of mobility. With WiMAX, broadband technology (traditionally ADSL and Fiber) goes wireless and WiMAX users can basically enjoy triple-play application, and split-second download and upload rates. WIMAX also offers full mobility much as traditional cellular systems do with features like seamless hand-over and roaming at vehicular speed; this is made possible because the system design covers the access network to core network. For the operator, WiMAX is a welcome development because it merges traditional cellular networks with broadband technology thus opening them to more business offerings and a larger client base and all this at a reduced cost of deployment. Base stations are comparatively cheaper and do not require extensive planning typical of other cellular systems thus WiMAX is aptly suited for emerging markets where infrastructure cost is a major issue; little wonder a lot of 3rd world countries have signified interest in the technology.

New cryptanalysis and modelling for wireless networking

High data rates and interoperability of vender devices have made WiMAX a prime desire for use worldwide. WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. IEEE 802.16a, b, c & d versions were updated within three years of the first launch of WiMAX. However, during those early years reports were published that highlighted the security weaknesses of the standard. These weaknesses prompted the IEEE to issue a new version, 802.16e to tackle the security issues. Despite this security enhancement, WiMAX remains vulnerable. This research project looks at the vulnerability of WiMAX 802.16e Subscriber Station/Mobile Station authentication at the initial entry and proposes approaches to the prevention of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks at this point in order to secure the Media Access Control (MAC) layer from such threats. A new protocol has been designed and developed to provide confidentiality, authentication and integrity to WiMAX users. This new protocol is integrated with Z algorithm (an algorithm described later in this paper) to provide: • Confidentiality of management messages • Message Authentication code • ID to provide for message integrity and user authentication. A simulation package was also required, to prove that a linear load of DoS attack would disable or exhaust the capacity of the base station of a WiMAX network, as well as providing other simulation functions. The freely available simulation tool NIST (NIST IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) and IKE (Internet Key Exchange) Simulation) is oriented towards fixed network communications (NIIST, 2003). There are no other relevant simulation tools; hence the purpose of this research project is to develop a new tool to simulate WiMAX security vulnerabilities and test the new protocol.

Nous assistons ces dernières années à une émergence constante de nouvelles applications, notamment pour les services audiovisuels. Ces applications imposent au réseau un certain nombre de contraintes pour qu’elles puissent fonctionner correctement. Le développement de mécanismes permettant d’offrir une garantie à ces contraintes, est donc devenu un objectif crucial. La norme IEEE 802.16j est l’une des solutions sans fil qui propose plus de ressources afin de supporter les nouveaux services de télécommunications. Dans la présente thèse, nous focalisons notre étude sur la problématique de la qualité de service dans les réseaux WiMAX relais. Nos contributions se regroupent à travers les étapes ci-dessous : Nous proposons un protocole de routage multicast pour les services IPTV (HDTV, SD-TV, Web-TV et Mobile-TV). Ce protocole repose d’une part sur un nouveau mécanisme de construction de l’arbre multicast basé sur les nombres premiers et d’autre part, sur une nouvelle méthode d’agrégation basée sur le standard de compression Vidéo «SVC». L’objectif est de supporter l’hétérogénéité des utilisateurs tout en optimisant la consommation des ressources. Par ailleurs, nous étudions le problème d’ordonnancement dans les réseaux WiMAX. Nous proposons un algorithme d’ordonnancement adaptatif AWRR, ce dernier se base sur une technique à charge pondérée. L’objectif est d’ajuster dynamiquement le poids de chaque classe de service, en prenant en compte la charge de la file d’attente et les contraintes de la QoS. Enfin, nous nous intéressons à l’étude de la problématique du chemin optimal contraint. Nous proposons une solution déterministe basée sur une fonction de coût. Notre fonction permet aussi d’assurer le contrôle d’admission, elle se base sur deux fonctions de coût élémentaires qui prennent en compte quatre critères de QoS. / Over recent years, new applications steadily developed in a tremendous space, especially in audiovisual services area. The present applications have some of constraints to work properly. The developments of mechanism which enable to overcome these constraints become a critical issue in this area. The IEEE 802.16j standard is one of wireless communication technology which offering more resources to support new telecommunication services. In this thesis, we focus our research on the problem of quality of service (QoS) inWiMAX relay networks. Our contributions are classified as follows : we proposed a multicast routing protocol for IPTV services (such as HD-TV, SD-TV, Web-TV and Mobile-TV). This proposed protocol used a new multicast tree construction mechanism based-on prime numbers. We also developed a new aggregation method based on standard video compression called Scalable Video Coding (SVC). Our goal is to support user’s heterogeneity while optimizing resources consumption. In addition, we studied the problem of scheduling inWiMAX networks.We proposed an adaptive scheduling algorithm AWRR for IPTV services. The aim of this method is to support QoS constraints by using two schedulers, and assigning a dynamic value to each service queue. Finally, we interested to study about the problem of path selection. We proposed a solution based on a deterministic cost function. This function also ensures admission control based on two basic cost functions which include four QoS criteria. This thesis has been prepared in the MIPS/GRTC laboratory, University of Haute Alsace, under a research contract external (CRE) framework with France Telecom R&D. All proposed mechanisms were evaluated by the simulator QualNet, Matlab and mathematical analysis.

Thesis concerns with mobile communications theory with focus on data transfer. In the introduction the history, the origin and individual mobile systems generations are described. It is followed by detailed description of second, third and fourth generation mobile systems. Frequency band allocation, signal processing, the system architecture itself, security management and basic features are also discussed. The GSM system is described together with individual data transmission types based on circuit switching – CSD and HSCSD and packet switching – GPRS and EDGE. For UMTS, FDD and TDD modes are listed as well as changes in individual releases, corresponding technologies and provided services. Next, there is the description of LTE and WiMAX systems, together with their improvements whose are part of the fourth generation of mobile systems. Last of the described systems is the still work in progress HAPS, also known as the system of stratospheric platforms. In the end important parameters are summarized and systems are compared with each other.

My thesis will be aimed at problems of wireless networks WiFi and WiMAX. A modelling of network will be put into effect onto which the measurement will be implemented and the impacts of network load on the data transfer Quality of Service (QoS) will be examined with aiming at VoIP. On this network model a power failure will be simulated and the impacts of this failure after restoring the power supply will be monitored. The aim of this thesis is to check the rate of network throughput while preserving a providing service quality and to suggest an economica1ly acceptable solution of the problems relating to feeding tension outage of the access point (AP) for a practical usage in these networks.

Development of an antenna system for a relay-based wireless network

The proliferation of modern wireless networks increases demand for high capacity and throughput in order to provide faster, more robust, efficient and broadband services to end users. Mobile WiMAX and LTE are examples of such networks in which for some cases they have exposed limited connectivity due to harsh environment. Relay stations are preferred to overcome problems of weak or no access for such network devices, that are placed in specific positions to maintain high quality of data transfer at low cost and provide the required connectivity anywhere anytime. These stations should be equipped with an antenna system capable of establishing communication between base station (backhaul link) and end users (access link). This thesis focuses on the design and development of a new antenna system that is suitable for a relay-based wireless network. Planar geometries of microstrip patch antennas are utilized. The antenna system comprises two antenna modules: a new design of a single antenna for access link and a new design of an antenna array for backhaul link realization. Both antenna specifications are compatible with the IEEE802.16j protocol standard. Hence, relay station should be capable of pointing its radiation pattern to the base station antenna, thus to achieve the desired radiation pattern of the relay station, a new beam-forming module is proposed, designed and developed to generate the proper radiation pattern. The beam-forming module incorporating digital phase shifters and attenuator chips is fabricated and tested. The optimization process using the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm is considered in this study to assign the proper phase and amplitude that is necessary to each radiation element excitation current, to produce the desired steered radiation pattern. A comprehensive study on the coupling effects for several relative positions between two new backhaul and access link antenna elements is performed. Two new antenna configurations for coupling reduction are tested and the simulated and measured results in terms of antenna radiation performances were compared and commented.

Adaptive Radio Resource Management in Cognitive Radio Communications using Fuzzy Reasoning

As wireless technologies evolve, novel innovations and concepts are required to dynamically and automatically alter various radio parameters in accordance with the radio environment. These innovations open the door for cognitive radio (CR), a new concept in telecommunications. CR makes its decisions using an inference engine, which can learn and adapt to changes in radio conditions. Fuzzy logic (FL) is the proposed decision-making algorithm for controlling the CR's inference engine. Fuzzy logic is well-suited for vague environments in which incomplete and heterogeneous information is present. In our proposed approach, FL is used to alter various radio parameters according to experience gained from different environmental conditions. FL requires a set of decision-making rules, which can vary according to radio conditions, but anomalies rise among these rules, causing degradation in the CR's performance. In such cases, the CR requires a method for eliminating such anomalies. In our model, we used a method based on the Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory of belief to accomplish this task. Through extensive simulation results and vast case studies, the use of the DS theory indeed improved the CR's decision-making capability. Using FL and the DS theory of belief is considered a vital module in the automation of various radio parameters for coping with the dynamic wireless environment. To demonstrate the FL inference engine, we propose a CR version of WiMAX, which we call CogMAX, to control different radio resources. Some of the physical parameters that can be altered for better results and performance are the physical layer parameters such as channel estimation technique, the number of subcarriers used for channel estimation, the modulation technique, and the code rate. / Ph. Receiver Channelizer For FBWA System Confirming To WiMAX Standard

Fixed Broadband Wireless Access (FBWA) is a technology aimed at providing high-speed wireless Internet access, over a wide area, from devices such as personal computers and laptops. FBWA channels are defined in the range of 1-20 MHz which makes the RF front end (RFE) design extremely challenging. In its pursuit to standardize the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technologies, IEEE working group 802.16 for Broadband Wireless Access has released the fixed BWA standard IEEE 802.16 – 2004 in 2004. This standard is further backed by a consortium, of leading wireless vendors, chip manufacturers and service providers, officially known as Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). In general, any wireless base station (BS), supporting a number of contiguous Frequency Division Multiplexed (FDM) channels has to incorporate an RF front end (RFE) for each RF channel. The precise job of the RFE is to filter the desired channel from a group of RF channels, digitize it and present it to the subsequent baseband system at the proper sampling rate. The system essentially has a bandpass filter (BPF) tuned to the channel of interest followed by a multiplier which brings the channel to a suitable intermediate frequency (IF). The IF output is digitized by an ADC and then brought to the baseband by an appropriate digital multiplier. The baseband samples, thus generated, are at the ADC sampling rate which is significantly higher than the target sampling rate, which is defined by the wireless protocol in use. As a result a sampling rate conversion (SRC) is performed on these baseband samples to bring the channel back to the target sampling rate. Since the input sampling rate need not be an integer multiple of the target sampling rate, Fractional SRC (FSRC) is required in most of the cases. Instead of using a separate ADC and IF section for each individual channels, most systems use a common IF section, followed by a wideband ADC, which operates over a wide frequency band containing a group of contiguous FDM channels. In this case a channelizer is employed to digitally extract the individual channels from the digital IF samples. We formally call this system a receiver channelizer. Such an implementation presents considerable challenge in terms of the computational requirement and of course the cost of the BS. The computational complexity further goes up for FBWA system where channel bandwidth is in the order of several MHz. Though such a system has been analyzed for narrow band wireless systems like GSM, to the best of our knowledge no analysis seems to have been carried out for a wideband system such as WiMAX. In this work, we focus on design of a receiver channelizer for WiMAX BS, which can simultaneously extract a group of contiguous FDM RF channels supported by the BS. The main goal is to obtain a simple, low cost channelizer architecture, which can be implemented in an FPGA. There are a number of techniques available in the literature, from Direct Digital Conversion to Polyphase FFT Filter Banks (PFFB), which can do the job of channelization. But each of them operates with certain constraints and, as a result, suits best to a particular application. Further all of these techniques are generic in nature, in the sense that their structure is independent of any particular standard. With regard to computational requirement of these techniques, PFFB is the best, with respect to the number of complex multiplications required for its implementation. But it needs two very stringent conditions to be satisfied, viz. the number of channels to be extracted is equal to the decimation factor and the sampling rate is a power of 2 times baseband bandwidth. Clearly these conditions may not be satisfied by different wireless communication standards, and in fact, this is not satisfied by the WiMAX standard. This gives us the motivation to analyze the receiver channelizer for WiMAX BS and to find an efficient and low cost architecture of the same. We demonstrate that even though the conditions required by PFFB are not satisfied by the WiMAX standard, we can modify the overall architecture to include the PFFB structure. This is achieved by dividing the receiver channelizer into two blocks. The first block uses the PFFB structure to separate the desired number of channels from the input samples. This process also achieves an integer SRC by a factor that is equal to the number of channels being extracted. This block generates baseband outputs whose sampling rates are related to their target sampling rate by a fractional multiplication factor. In order to bring the channels to their target sampling rate, each output from the PFFB block is fed to a FSRC block, whose job is to use an efficient FSRC algorithm to generate the samples at the target sampling rate. We show that the computational complexity, as compared to the direct implementation, is reduced by a factor, which is approximately equal to the square of the number of channels. After mathematically formulating the receiver channelizer for WiMAX BS, we perform the simulation of the system using a software tool. There are two basic motives behind the simulation of the system which has a mathematical model. Firstly, the software simulation will give an idea whether the designed system is physically realizable. Secondly, this will help in designing the logic for different blocks of the system. Once these individual blocks are simulated and tested, they can be smoothly ported onto an FPGA. For simulation purpose, we parameterize the receiver channelizer in such a way that it can be reconfigured for different ADC sampling rates and IF frequencies, by changing the input clock rate. The system is also reconfigurable in terms of the supported channel bandwidth. This is achieved by storing all the filter coefficients pertaining to each channel type, and loading the required coefficients into the computational engine. Using this methodology we simulate the system for three different IF frequencies (and the corresponding ADC sampling rates) and three different channel types, thus leading to nine different system configurations. The simulation results are in agreement with the mathematical model of the system. Further, we also discuss some important implementation issues for the reconfigurable receiver channelizer. We estimate the memory requirement for implementing the system in an FPGA. The implementation delay is estimated in terms of number of samples. The thesis is organized in five chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction about the WiMAX system and different existing channelization architecture followed by the outline of the proposed receiver channelizer. In chapter 2, we analyze the proposed receiver channelizer for WiMAX BS and evaluate its computational requirements. Chapter 3 outlines the procedure to generate the WiMAX test signal and specification of the all the filters used in the system. It also lists the simulation parameters and records the results of the simulation. Chapter 4 presents the details of a possible FPGA implementation. We present the concluding remarks and future research directions in the final chapter.
