A CHARACTERIZATION OF CEREAL RYE COVER CROP PERFORMANCE, NITROGEN CYCLING, AND ASSOCIATED ECONOMIC RISK WITHIN REGENERATIVE CROPPING SYSTEMS

<p>Cereal rye (<i>Secale cereale</i>, L., CR) is the most commonly utilized cover crop species within the United States. Yet, the total land area planted to CR on an annual basis remains relatively low despite its numerous proven environmental benefits. The relatively low rates of CR adoption could be due to a dearth of knowledge surrounding certain agronomic and economic components of CR adoption. Currently, there exists knowledge gaps within the scientific literature regarding CR performance, N cycling, and associated economic risk. <a>Thus, to address the above-mentioned knowledge gaps, three individual studies were developed to: i) investigate the fate of scavenged CR nitrogen (N) amongst soil N pools, ii) assess the suitability of visible-spectrum vegetation indices (VIs) to predict CR biomass and nutrient accumulation (BiNA), and iii) characterize the economic risk of CR adoption at a regional scale over time.</a></p> <p>In the first study, <sup>15</sup>N, a stable isotope of N, was used in an aerobic incubation to track the fate of CR root and shoot N among the soil microbial biomass, inorganic, and organic N pools, as well as explore CR N bioavailability over a simulated corn growing season. In this study, the C:N ratio of the shoot residues was 16:1 and the roots was 31:1 and differences in residue quality affected the dynamics of CR N release from each residue type. On average, 14% of whole plant CR N was recovered in the soil inorganic N pool at the final sample date. Correspondingly, at the final sampling date 53%, 33%, and less than 1% of whole plant CR N was recovered as soil organic N, undecomposed residue, and as microbial biomass N, respectively. Most CR N remained unavailable to plants during the first cash crop growing season subsequent to termination. This knowledge could support the advancement of N fertilizer management strategies for cropping systems containing cereal rye.</p> <p>In the second study, a commercially available unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) outfitted with a standard RGB sensor was used to collect aerial imagery of growing CR from which visible-spectrum VIs were computed. Computed VIs were then coupled with weather and geographic data using linear multiple regression to produce prediction models for CR biomass, carbon (C), N, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S). Five visible-spectrum VIs (Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI), Green Leaf Index (GLI), Modified Green Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI), Red Green Blue Vegetation Index (RGBVI), and Excess of Green (ExG)) were evaluated and the results determined that MGRVI was the best predictor for CR biomass, C, K, and S and that RGBVI was the best predictor for CR N and P. Furthermore, the final prediction models for the VIs selected as the best predictors developed in this study performed satisfactorily in the prediction of CR biomass, C, N, P, K, and S producing adjusted R<sup>2</sup> values of 0.79, 0.79, 0.75, 0.81, 0.81, and 0.78, respectively. The results of this study have the potential to aid producers in making informed decisions regarding CR and fertility management. </p> <p>In the final study, agronomic data for corn and soybean cropping systems with and without CR was collected from six states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin) and used within a Monte-Carlo stochastic simulation to characterize the economic risk of adopting CR at a regional scale over time. The results of this study indicate that average net returns to CR are always negative regardless of CR tenure primarily due to added costs and increased variability in cash crop grain yields associated with CR adoption. Further, the results demonstrate that the additional risk assumed by adopting CR is not adequately compensated for with current CR adoption incentive programs and that the risk premium necessary can be 1.7 to 15 times greater than existing incentive payments. Knowledge gained from this study could be used to reimagine current incentive programs to further promote adoption of CR.</p>

Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind Versuche zur Synthese neuer binärer Kohlenstoffnitride im Allgemeinen und von C3N4-Vorläuferverbindungen im Speziellen. Hierbei werden v. a. die Herstellung und die Eigenschaften organischer Polyazide beschrieben, die aufgrund ihrer Gefährlichkeit durch zahlreiche Folgereaktionen in weniger brisante Moleküle überführt werden mussten. Als Derivatisierungsreaktionen kamen hierbei beispielsweise die 1,3-dipolare Cycloaddition mit Norbornen und Cyclooctin, die STAUDINGER-Reaktion mit verschiedenen Phosphinen sowie die Aza-WITTIG-Reaktion zum Einsatz. Es konnten dabei u. a. zehn Röntgeneinkristallstrukturen erhalten und als Strukturbeweis aufgeführt werden. Zahlreiche hochaufgelöste Massenspektren sowie Elementaranalysen und NMR-Daten bestätigten außerdem alle neu erhaltenen Strukturen. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit stellen Versuche zur Synthese von monomerem C3N4 dar, dessen Herstellung zwar nicht gelang, für dessen Bildung allerdings neue Möglichkeiten ausgehend von verschiedenen Edukten beschrieben werden. Darüber hinaus wurden bereits bekannte Moleküle auf ihre Eignung als C3N4-Vorläufer untersucht, wobei z. B. durch Azid-Addition an Nitrilgruppen unerwartete neue Produkte erhalten werden konnten.

4,5-Dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazoles are postulated to be key intermediates in the synthesis of ketones from alkenes on an industrial scale, alkylation of DNA in vivo, decomposition of N-nitrosoureas (potent carcinogens), and are also a subject of great interest for theoretical chemists. In this thesis, formation of the parent compound and decay into secondary products has been studied by NMR monitoring analysis. The elusive properties and the intermediacy of the parent compound, 4,5-dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazole, in the decomposition of suitably substituted N-nitrosoureas using Tl(I) alkoxides as bases, have been confirmed by the characterisation of its decay products viz., ethylene oxide, acetaldehyde, and especially diazomethane, at very low temperatures by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 15N NMR, and relevant 2D NMR methods. Moreover, it has been shown that the methylation of nucleophilic molecules by 3-methyl-4,5-dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazolium salts, which are considered to be activated forms of β−hydroxyalkylnitrosamines, does not involve 4,5-dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazole as an intermediate, as has been reported in literature; instead, nucleophilic substitution leading to synthesis of open-chain products dominates the reaction. / 4,5-Dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazole wurden als Schlüsselintermediate in der industriellen Synthese von Ketonen aus Alkenen, der in vivo Alkylierung von DNA und der Zersetzung von N-Nitrosoharnstoffen (potente Karzinogene) postuliert. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde die Bildung der Stammverbindung und deren Zersetzung in sekundäre Produkte mittels NMR-Verfolgung studiert. Les interactions entre les végétaux et les organismes telluriques sont déterminantes pour la décomposition des matières organiques et la nutrition minérale des plantes. L’objectif général de la thèse était de comprendre comment les interactions multi-trophiques dans la rhizosphere agissent sur la disponibilité en azote minéral et l’allocation en carbone dans la plante. Nous avons mis au point des dispositifs de culture de plante, permettant de contrôler l’environnement biotique des racines (inoculation par des espèces symbiotiques modèles : un protozoaire bactériophage et/ou une espèce mycorhizienne à arbuscules). Nous avons utilisé l’azote 15N et le carbone 13C pour tracer le cheminement de l’azote du sol vers la plante et le carbone assimilé par photosynthèse, de la plante vers le sol et les microorganismes du sol. L’allocation de C vers les racines et la rhizosphère est dépendante de la qualité de la litière foliaire enfouie. La structure de la communauté microbienne déterminée par l’analyse des profils d’acides gras (PLFA) est modifiée par la présence de protozoaires pour la litière à C/N élevé. Les mycorhizes à arbuscules et les protozoaires présentent une complémentarité pour l’acquisition du C et de N par la plante. Les protozoaires remobilisent l’azote de la biomasse microbienne par leur activité de prédation. Les hyphes fongiques transportent du C récent issu de la plante vers des sites riches en matière organique non accessibles aux racines. Ainsi, l’activité de la communauté microbienne est stimulée et la disponibilité en N augmentée lorsque des protozoaires sont présents. Les perspectives de ce travail sont de déterminer si (i) les interactions étudiées dans ce dispositif modèle peuvent être généralisées à d’autres interactions impliquant d’autres espèces de champignons mycorhiziens et de protozoaires (ii) la phénologie de la plante et la composition des communautés végétales influence la nature et l’intensité des réponses obtenues / Plants interact with multiple root symbionts for fostering uptake of growth-limiting nutrients. In turn, plants allocate a variety of organic resources in form of energy-rich rhizodeposits into the rhizosphere, stimulating activity, growth and modifying diversity of microorganisms. The aim of my study was to understand how multitrophic rhizosphere interactions feed back to plant N nutrition, assimilate partitioning and growth. Multitrophic interactions were assessed in a single-plant microcosm approach, with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus intraradices) and bacterial feeding protozoa (Acanthamoeba castellanii) as model root symbionts. Stable isotopes enabled tracing C (13C) and N (15N) allocation in the plant and into the rhizosphere. Plant species identity is a major factor affecting plant-protozoa interactions in terms of N uptake and roots and shoot morphology. Plants adjusted C allocation to roots and into the rhizosphere depending on litter quality and the presence of bacterial grazers for increasing plant growth. The effect of protozoa on the structure of microbial community supplied with both, plant C and litter N, varied with litter quality added to soil. AM-fungi and protozoa interact to complement each other for plant benefit in C and N acquisition. Protozoa re-mobilized N from fast growing rhizobacteria and by enhancing microbial activity. Hyphae of AM fungi acted as pipe system, translocating plant derived C and protozoan remobilized N from source to sink regions. Major perspectives of this work will be to investigate whether (i) multitrophic interactions in our model system can be generalized to other protozoa-mycorrhiza-plant interactions (ii) these interactions are depending on plant phenology and plant community composition

I The aim of this work is to evaluate the agronomic behavior of different legume species under cerrado conditions in Mato Grosso do Sul. Seven experiments were carried out, all of them in the experimental field of the (Ag?ncia de Desenvolvimento Agr?rio e Extens?o Rural de MS), (Agency of rural development and extension of MS). Two of these experiments referred to the performance of legumes evaluation. The first experiment was carried out during the Spring- Summer period, and the second one during the Fall- Winter period. The treatments were constituted by the legume species (Crotalaria juncea, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Crotalaria mucronata, Crotalaria reviflora, Mucuna pruriens, Mucuna aterrima, Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp Cv Fava larga and Cv IAPAR Arat? 43 an?o, Canavalia ensiformes and Canavalia brasiliensis). The third experiment was carried out to determine the dry phytomass decomposition rate and the nitrogen release of the species that were evaluated; this happened during the Fall-Winter period, and the treatments were the mulching of the legumes cited above, except C. breviflora, which was severely attacked by Fusarium sp. The experimental design adopted was randomized blocks, with eleven treatments and nine harvest dates disposed with four replicates. The forth and the fifth experiments were carried out in the subsequent year, their aim was qualifying the Biological Nitrogen Fixation (hereinafter called BNF) and determining the isotope discrimination value ?B value?; their treatments were seven legume species previously selected due to their performances on the former experimental actions and three checks, Brachiaria decumbens, Helianthus annuus, and Zea mays cv BR 106, disposed in randomized blocks with four replicates. The sixth and the seventh experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the cabbage cv Astrus under organic management in no-tillage system. The treatments of the sixth experiment were maize-velvet bean intercrop. The later was sown in five different times after maize germination, mucuna alone, maize alone, spontaneous vegetation, and cultivation with conventional tillage of the soil. The treatments of the seventh experiment were maize intercropped with Crotalaria juncea, the latter was slashed, slashed and pruned, maize with basic fertilizer, maize with basic and dressing fertilizers, crotalaria alone, maize alone, spontaneous vegetation, and cultivation with conventional tillage of the soil. The experimental design adopted for both experiments was randomized blocks. The evaluation of the aerial phytomass production was determined when the legume species flowered and when the non-legume ones underwent the grain filling process. The quantification of BNF and the determination of the B value were estimated by using natural abundance 15N and the 15N dilution technique. Functional growth analyses were also carried out as well as soil cover rates, digestion time of the plant tissues, and the phytosociology were determined. On the sixth and seventh experiments the green manure contributions on the agronomic behavior of the cabbage cultivated in no-tillage system under organic management were evaluated. The results obtained have demonstrated the viability for the cultivations of these legume species at the Cerrado Biome, with the contribution of the BNF varying between 75 and 85% of the nitrogen found in the plant tissue originating from the air. They have also demonstrated the viability of using C. juncea and velvet bean when both are intercropped with maize in the mulching formation to the organic cultivation of the cabbage in no-tillage system Cap. II Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the agronomic behavior of legume species in which several components of plant growth were evaluated, such as aerial phytomass production, soil cover rate, seed production, besides phytosociology and in situ decomposition rate under cerrado conditions in Mato Grosso do Sul in two periods of the year. One experiment was carried out during the Spring-Summer period and the other one was carried out during the Fall-Winter period. Both experiments were carried out at the Centro de Pesquisa da Ag?ncia de Desenvolvimento Rural e Extens?o Rural de Mato Grosso do Sul (Mato Grosso do Sul Research center of the Agency of rural development and extension), in Campo Grande ? MS. The experimental design adopted for both was randomized blocks, formed by eleven treatments made up by the species C. juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. mucronata, C. spectabilis, C. breviflora, Mucuna aterrima, Mucuna pruriens, Canavalia brasiliensis, Canavalia ensiformis, Cajanus Cajans cv ?IAPAR an?o?, and Cajanus Cajans cv. giant broad bean. The agronomic behavior of the species that were studied was evaluated by the analysis of the stem and the leaf separately. It was observed that the aerial phytomass productions differed significantly with the species of the genus Crotalaria, showing the best results. Crotalaria juncea stands out with 14.16 Mg ha-1, followed by the Cajanus cajan cv. Fava larga with 11.58 Mg ha-1; there were no significant differences among the species of prostrate habit, mucunas and Brazilian jackbean (Canavalia brasiliensis). The later obtained 3.56 Mg ha-1 and the former did 2.85 Mg ha-1. Regarding seed production, the best performances were obtained during the Fall-Winter period for all legume species, except jack bean and feij?o-bravo (Capparis flexuosa), both obtained similar performances on the two periods of sowing, probably because they might be more tolerant to the drought stress. Regarding the decomposition rate, the results have revealed that the decomposition constants and the residue half-lives had different behaviors on the species that were studied; the Crotalaria species obtained higher decomposition rates when compared to the other species, differentiated behaviors were also noticed on the stem and on the leaf. The C. juncea, jack bean, and the two species of mucuna obtained higher soil cover rate, which reflected a higher suppression of spontaneous plants Cap. III Two experiments related to the quantification of BNF and the determination of the isotope discrimination, ?B value?, in legume species previously selected were simultaneously carried out in the experimental field of the AGRAER-MS, in Campo Grande-MS, during the Spring/Summer period in the 2005/2006 year of production. The experimental design adopted was randomized blocks, formed by ten treatments made up by the species C. juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. mucronata, C. spectabilis, velvet bean, Brazilian jackbean, and Pigeon pea; there have been also, as checks, Sunflower, Maize, and Brachiaria species. The aerial phytomass productions were determined when each legume species flowered and when the non-legume ones underwent the grain filling process. With the samples of legumes and check plants, the quantities of N and the BNF were estimated by using the 15N dilution technique. Afterwards, when the BNF values were known, they were applied to the equation used in natural abundance 15N with the aim of estimating the B value. Regarding the aerial phytomass production, the Pigeon pea had the best performance, followed by the C. ochroleuca, reaching averages of 16.24 Mg ha-1 against 14.44 Mg ha-1. The legume species behaved similarly to the amount of accumulated nitrogen; the Pigeon pea, C. ohcroleuca, and C. mucronata reached values of 346.57 kg ha-1, 333.25 kg ha-1, and 277.35 kg ha- 1 respectively, and they deserve a distinction. Regarding the %BNF, it was observed that the 15N dilution technique could not be applied in all the species that were studied since the cycle of most legumes species was different from the checks; in this way, the checks were not appropriate because the technique demands that legumes and checks grow simultaneously and under the same conditions. However, to the varieties which were more precocious that the checks, the BNF value must be at least between 73 to 87%. Just on the specie C. mucronata it was possible to estimate the BNF and the B value with the rigor that the applied isotopic methodologies demand. The B value of this specie was -3.69. Cap. IV The aim of this study is to evaluate the agronomic behavior of the cabbage in no-tillage system under organic management and the contribution of the prior cultivation of two legumes with different growing habits intercropping with maize in the mulching formation. Both experiments were carried out in the experimental field of AGRAER-MS, in Campo Grande-MS. The first experiment was the maize-C. juncea intercrop, the latter was managed, slashed, pruned, and slashed afterwards; besides the cultivation of single maize, single C. juncea, cultivation with conventional tillage of the soil with and without fertilization with equivalent amounts of 100 Kg N ha-1 at planting and sidressed 30 days after the maize cultivation, making up eight treatments with four replications in randomized blocks. The dry matter productions in the aerial part of the cover crops and the spontaneous vegetation were evaluated. Agronomic characteristics that were evaluated on the cabbage: productivity, commercial standard, fresh and dry weight, besides the dry phytomass of the prior cultivation. On this experiment it was possible to verify better yields regarding the fresh weight and head diameter when we used single, pruned C. juncea maize with basic fertilizer, and maize with base and dressing fertilizers, reaching a fresh weight over 1.0 Kg and heads diameter over 10 cm. Regarding maize and cabbage productivity, they were not influenced by the different kinds of intercrop systems; there were no significant statistic difference of treatments, which also reflected on the dry matter production of the prior cultivations. On the second experiment, the experimental design which was adopted was randomized blocks, with nine treatments and four replicates. The treatments were: maize-velvet bean intercrop, the later was planted in five different times: after the maize germination, maize alone, mucuna alone, cultivation with conventional tillage of the soil, and fallow with spontaneous vegetation, making up a total number of nine treatments. The parameters that were evaluated were similar to the ones of the former experiment.The cabbage production showed the most promising yield 2.06 Kg of head average weight and when cultivated as a sequential crop to the maize-velvet bean intercrop sown 15 days after the maize germination, differing significantly from the other treatments. When we analyzed the maize productivities, we noticed fall of productivity around 29% when it was intercropped with velvet bean at 15 and 30 days after its germination when it was compared to the other prior cultivations in which the intercrop system was used. / Cap. I O presente trabalho teve como finalidade avaliar o comportamento agron?mico de diferentes esp?cies de leguminosas nas condi??es do cerrado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Foram conduzidos sete experimentos, todos no campo experimental da Ag?ncia de Desenvolvimento Agr?rio e Extens?o Rural de MS, sendo que dois deles foram referentes ? avalia??o do desempenho das leguminosas. O primeiro foi instalado no per?odo de primavera-ver?o e o segundo no outonoinverno. Os tratamentos foram constitu?dos das esp?cies de leguminosas Crotal?ria juncea, Crotal?ria ochroleuca, Crotal?ria mucronata, Crotal?ria reviflora, Mucuna pruriens, Mucuna aterrima, Cajanus cajan (L.) O terceiro experimento foi realizado para determinar a taxa de decomposi??o da fitomassa seca e libera??o de nitrog?nio das esp?cies avaliadas, realizado no per?odo de outono-inverno, com os tratamentos constituindo-se da palhada das leguminosas descrita acima, exceto C. breviflora, pois a leguminosa sofreu ataque severo de Fusarium sp. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com onze tratamentos e nove ?pocas de coleta distribu?dos em quatro repeti??es. O quarto e o quinto experimentos foram realizados no ano subsequente e tiveram como finalidade quantificar a Fixa??o Biol?gica de Nitrog?nio (FBN) e determinar o valor de discrimina??o isot?pica ?Valor B?, tendo como tratamentos sete esp?cies de leguminosas previamente selecionadas pelos seus desempenhos nas a??es experimentais anteriores e tr?s testemunhas, Brachiaria decumbens, Helianthus annuus e Zea mays cv BR 106, dispostos em blocos ao acaso com quatro repeti??es. O sexto e o s?timo experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar o desempenho do repolho cv Astrus sob manejo org?nico em sistema plantio direto, sendo que o sexto experimento teve como tratamentos cons?rcio milho x mucuna cinza, sendo esta semeada em cinco ?pocas diferentes, ap?s germina??o do milho, mucuna em monocultivo, milho em monocultivo, vegeta??o espont?nea e cultivo com preparo convencional do solo. A quantifica??o da FBN e determina??o do valor ?B? foram estimadas utilizando-se a t?cnica de abund?ncia natural 15N e da dilui??o isot?pica de 15N. Foram tamb?m realizadas an?lises funcionais de crescimento, bem como determinadas as taxas de cobertura do solo, tempo de decomposi??o dos tecidos vegetais e a fitossociologia. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram a viabilidade do cultivo destas leguminosas no bioma cerrado, com a contribui??o da FBN, variando entre 75 e 85% do nitrog?nio encontrado no tecido vegetal proveniente do ar. Tamb?m, demonstraram a viabilidade do uso da C. juncea e M. cinza quando cultivadas em cons?rcio com milho para obten??o de palhada ao cultivo org?nico do repolho em sistema plantio direto. Cap. II Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar o comportamento agron?mico de esp?cies de leguminosas, onde foram avaliados diferentes componentes do crescimento vegetal, como produ??o fitomassa a?rea, taxa de cobertura de solo, produ??o de sementes, al?m da fitossociologia e taxa de decomposi??o ?in situ?, nas condi??es do cerrado de Mato Grosso do Sul, em duas ?pocas do ano. Os experimentos foram conduzidos no Centro de Pesquisa da Ag?ncia de Desenvolvimento Agr?rio e Extens?o Rural de Mato Grosso do Sul, localizado em Campo Grande - MS, sendo um no per?odo de primavera-ver?o e outro no outono-inverno. Em ambos, o delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos ao acaso, formado de onze tratamentos constitu?dos das esp?cies C. juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. mucronata, C. spectabilis, C. breviflora, Mucuna aterrima, Mucuna pruriens, Canavalia brasiliensis, Canavalia ensiformis, Cajanus Cajans cv. IAPAR an?o e Cajanus Cajans cv. fava larga gigante. O comportamento agron?mico das esp?cies estudadas foi avaliado analisando-se separadamente haste e folha. Observou-se que as produ??es de fitomassa a?rea diferiram de forma significativa com as esp?cies do g?nero crotal?ria, obtendo-se melhores desempenhos. Destacam-se a Crotal?ria juncea com 14,16 Mg ha-1, seguida do Guandu cv fava-larga com 11,58 Mg ha-1; entre as esp?cies de h?bito prostrado, n?o houve diferen?as significativas, mucunas e o feij?o-bravo-do Cear?, sendo que esse obteve 3,56 Mg ha-1 contra 2,85 Mg ha-1 da M. preta. Com rela??o ? produ??o de sementes, os melhores desempenhos foram obtidos no per?odo de outono-inverno para todas as leguminosas, com exce??o do feij?o-de-porco e feij?o-bravo, que obtiveram desempenhos semelhantes nas duas ?pocas de semeadura, provavelmente, por serem mais tolerantes ao estresse h?drico. No tocante ? taxa de decomposi??o, os resultados revelaram que as constantes de decomposi??o e tempo de meia-vida tiveram comportamentos diferentes para as esp?cies estudadas, com esp?cies de crotal?ria obtendo maiores velocidades de decomposi??o quando comparadas ?s demais esp?cies, notou-se tamb?m comportamentos diferenciados para haste e folha. A C. juncea, feij?o de porco e as duas esp?cies de mucuna obtiveram maior taxa de cobertura de solo, o que refletiu em uma maior supress?o da vegeta??o de ocorr?ncia espont?nea Cap III Foram conduzidos simultaneamente dois experimentos relacionados ? quantifica??o da FBN e determina??o do valor de discrimina??o isot?pica, valor ?B?, em esp?cies de leguminosas previamente selecionadas. Os experimentos foram conduzidos no campo experimental da AGRAER-MS, localizado em Campo Grande-MS, no per?odo de primavera-ver?o, no ano agr?cola 2005/06. O delineamento estat?stico utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, constitu?dos de dez tratamentos, sendo este compostos pelas esp?cies C. juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. mucronata, C. spectabilis, Mucuna cinza, Feij?o-bravo-do-cear? e Guandu fava larga; e como testemunhas as esp?cies Girassol, Milho e Braqui?ria. Por ocasi?o do florescimento de cada esp?cie de leguminosa e enchimento de gr?os das n?o-leguminosas, foram determinadas as produ??es de fitomassa a?rea. A partir das amostras de leguminosas e plantas testemunhas, estimaram-se as quantidades de N e a FBN, para tanto usando a t?cnica de dilui??o isot?pica de 15N . Posteriormente, conhecendo-se os valores de FBN, aplicou-se aos mesmos a equa??o utilizada na t?cnica de abund?ncia natural de 15N com a finalidade de estimar o valor B. Com rela??o ? produ??o de fitomassa a?rea, o Guandu fava larga obteve melhor desempenho seguido da C. ochroleuca, atingindo m?dias de 16,24 Mg ha -1 contra 14,44 Mg ha-1. Para a quantidade de nitrog?nio acumulada as esp?cies de leguminosas se comportaram de maneira semelhante, com destaque para o Guandu fava larga, C. ohcroleuca e C. Mucronata, atingido valores de 346,57 kg ha-1, 333,25 kg ha-1 e 277,35 kg ha-1 respectivamente. No tocante ? %FBN, observou-se que a t?cnica de dilui??o isot?pica de 15N n?o poderia ser aplicada para todas as esp?cies estudadas, uma vez que a maioria das esp?cies de leguminosas teve ciclo diferenciado das testemunhas, desta forma, as testemunhas n?o foram apropriadas, visto que a t?cnica exige que tanto as leguminosas como as testemunhas cres?am nas mesmas condi??es e de forma simult?nea. Contudo, para as variedades mais precoces que as testemunhas, o valor de FBN deve estar no m?nimo entre 73 a 87%. Somente na esp?cie C. Mucronata, foi poss?vel estimar a FBN e o valor B com o rigor que exigem as metodologias isot?picas aplicadas. O valor B para esta esp?cie foi de -3,69. Cap. Ambos experimentos foram implantados no Campo Experimental da AGRAER, em Campo Grande-MS. O primeiro experimento consistiu no cons?rcio entre milho e C. juncea, sendo esta manejada, somente com ro?ada (taratamento 6), podada e posteriormente ro?ada (tratamento 5), al?m do cultivo do milho solteiro, C. juncea solteira, cultivo com preparo convencional do solo, com aus?ncia e presen?a de aduba??o, em quantidades equivalentes a 100 Kg N ha-1 no plantio e em cobertura 30 dias ap?s plantio do milho, perfazendo oito tratamentos com quatro repeti??es, dispostos em blocos ao acaso. Avaliaram-se as produ??es de mat?ria seca na parte a?rea das plantas de cobertura e da vegeta??o espont?nea. As caracter?sticas agron?micas avaliadas no repolho foram: produtividade, padr?o comercial, peso fresco e seco, al?m da fitomassa seca do pr?-cultivo. Neste experimento, verificaram-se melhores rendimentos quanto ao peso m?dio e di?metro da cabe?a quando se utilizaram C. juncea solteira, C.juncea ro?ada, milho com aduba??o de base e milho com aduba??o de base e cobertura, alcan?ando peso m?dio acima de 1,0 kg e di?metro das cabe?as acima de 10 cm. Quanto ? produtividade do milho e do repolho, estes n?o foram influenciados pelos diferentes tipos de cons?rcios, n?o havendo diferen?a estat?stica significativa entre os tratamentos, o que refletiu tamb?m na produ??o de mat?ria seca dos pr?-cultivos. The fate of carbon and nitrogen from an organic effluent irrigated onto soil : process studies, model development and testing

The fate of the carbon and nitrogen in dairy farm effluent (DFE) applied onto soil was investigated through laboratory experiments and field lysimeter studies. They resulted in the development and testing of a complex carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) simulation model (CaNS-Eff) of the soil-plant-microbial system. To minimise the risk of contamination of surface waters, regulatory authorities in New Zealand promote irrigation onto land as the preferred treatment method for DFE. The allowable annual loading rates for DFE, as defined in statutory regional plans are based on annual N balance calculations, comparing N inputs to outputs from the farming system. Little information is available, however, to assess the effects that these loading rates have on the receiving environment. It is this need, to understand the fate of land-applied DFE and develop a tool to describe the process, that is addressed in this research. The microbially mediated net N mineralisation from DFE takes a central role in the turnover of DFE, as the total N in DFE is dominated by organic N. In a laboratory experiment, where DFE was applied at the standard farm loading rate of 68 kg N ha⁻¹, the net C mineralisation from the DFE was finished 13 days after application and represented 30% of the applied C, with no net N mineralisation being measured by Day 113. The soluble fraction of DFE appeared to have a microbial availability similar to that of glucose. The low and gradually changing respiration rate measured from DFE indicated a semi-continuous substrate supply to the microbial biomass, reflecting the complex nature and broad range of C compounds in DFE. The repeated application of DFE will gradually enhance the mineralisable fraction of the total soil organic N and in the long term increase net N mineralisation. To address the lack of data on the fate of faecal-N in DFE, a ¹⁵N-labelled faecal component of DFE was applied under two different water treatments onto intact soil cores with pasture growing on them. At the end of 255 days, approximately 2% of the applied faecal ¹⁵N had been leached, 11 % was in plant material, 11 % was still as effluent on the surface, and 40% remained in the soil (39% as organic N). Unmeasured gaseous losses and physical losses from the soil surface of the cores supposedly account for the remaining ¹⁵N (approximately 36%). Separate analysis of the total and ammonium nitrogen contents and ¹⁵N enrichments of the DFE and filtered sub-samples (0.5 mm, 0.2µm) showed that the faecal-N fraction was not labelled homogeneously. Due to this heterogeneity, which was exacerbated by the filtration of DFE on the soil surface, it was difficult to calculate the turnover of the total faecal-N fraction based on ¹⁵N results. By making a simplifying assumption about the enrichment of the ¹⁵N in the DFE that infiltrated the soil, the contribution from DFE-N to all plant available N fractions including soil inorganic N was estimated to have been approximately 11 % of the applied DFE-N. An initial two-year study investigating the feasibility of manipulating soil water conditions through controlled drainage to enhance denitrification from irrigated DFE was extended a further two years for this thesis project. The resulting four-year data set provided the opportunity to evaluate the sustainability of DFE application onto land, an extended data set against which to test the adequacy of CaNS-Eff, and to identify the key processes in the fate of DFE irrigated onto soil under field conditions. In the final year of DFE irrigation, 1554 kg N ha⁻¹ of DFE-N was applied onto the lysimeters, with the main removal mechanism being pasture uptake (700 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ removed). An average of 193 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ was leached, with 80% of this being organic N. The nitrate leaching decreased with increasing soil moisture conditions through controlled drainage. At the high DFE loading rate used, the total soil C and N, pH and the microbial biomass increased at different rates over the four years. The long-term sustainability of the application of DFE can only be maintained when the supply of inorganic N is matched by the demand of the pasture. The complex simulation model (CaNS-Eff) of the soil-plant-microbial system was developed to describe the transport and transformations of C and N components in effluents applied onto the soil. The model addresses the shortcomings in existing models and simulates the transport, adsorption and filtration of both dissolved and particulate components of an effluent. The soil matrix is divided into mobile and immobile flow domains with convective flow of solutes occurring in the mobile fraction only. Diffusion is considered to occur between the micropore and mesopore domains both between and within a soil layer, allowing dissolved material to move into the immobile zone. To select an appropriate sub-model to simulate the water fluxes within CaNS-Eff, the measured drainage volumes and water table heights from the lysimeters were compared to simulated values over four years. Two different modelling approaches were compared, a simpler water balance model, DRAINMOD, and a solution to Richards' equation, SWIM. Both models provided excellent estimation of the total amount of drainage and water table height. The greatest errors in drainage volume were associated with rain events over the summer and autumn, when antecedent soil conditions were driest. When soil water and interlayer fluxes are required at small time steps such as during infiltration under DFE-irrigation, SWIM's more mechanistic approach offered more flexibility and consequently was the sub-model selected to use within CaNS-Eff. Measured bromide leaching from the lysimeters showed that on average 18% of the bromide from an irrigation event bypassed the soil matrix and was leached in the initial drainage event. This bypass mechanism accounted for the high amount of organic N leached under DFE-irrigation onto these soils and a description of this bypass process needed to be included in CaNS-Eff. Between 80 and 90% of the N and C leached from the lysimeters was particulate (> 0.2 µm in size), demonstrating the need to describe transport of particulate material in CaNS-Eff. The filtration behaviour of four soil horizons was measured by characterising the size of C material in a DFE, applying this DFE onto intact soil cores, and collecting and analyzing the resulting leachate using the same size characterisation. After two water flushes, an average of 34% of the applied DFE-C was leached through the top 0-50 mm soil cores, with a corresponding amount of 27% being leached from the 50-150 mm soil cores. Most of the C leaching occurred during the initial DFE application onto the soil. To simulate the transport and leaching of particulate C, a sub-model was developed and parameterised that describes the movement of the effluent in terms of filtering and trapping the C within a soil horizon and then washing it out with subsequent flow events. The microbial availability of the various organic fractions within the soil system are described in CaNS-Eff by availability spectra of multiple first-order decay functions. The simulation of microbial dynamics is based on actual consumption of available C for three microbial biomass populations: heterotrophs, nitrifiers and denitrifiers. The respiration level of a population is controlled by the amount of C that is available to that population. This respiration rate can vary between low level maintenance requirements, when very little substrate is available, and higher levels when excess substrate is available to an actively growing population. The plant component is described as both above and below-ground fractions of a rye grass-clover pasture. The parameter set used in CaNS-Eff to simulate the fate of DFE irrigated onto the conventionally drained lysimeter treatments over three years with a subsequent 10 months non-irrigation period was derived from own laboratory studies, field measurements, experimental literature data and published model studies. As no systematic calibration exercise was undertaken to optimise these parameters, the parameter set should be considered as "initial best estimates" and not as a calibrated data set on which a full validation of CaNS-Eff could be based. Over the 42 months of simulation, the cumulative drainage from CaNS-Eff for the conventionally drained DFE lysimeter was always within the 95% CI of the measured value. On the basis of individual drainage bulking periods, CaNS-Eff was able to explain 92% of the variation in the measured drainage volumes. On an event basis the accuracy of the simulated water filled pore space (WFPS) was better than that of the drainage volume, with an average of 70% of the simulated WFPS values being within the 95% CI for the soil layers investigated, compared to 44% for the drainage volumes. Overall the hydrological component of CaNS-Eff, which is based on the SWIM model, could be considered as satisfactory for the purposes of predicting the soil water status and drainage volume from the conventionally drained lysimeter treatment for this study. The simulated cumulative nitrate leaching of 4.7 g NO₃-N m⁻² over the 42 months of lysimeter operation was in good agreement to the measured amount of 3.0 (± 2.7) g NO₃-N m⁻². Similarly, the total simulated ammonium leaching of 2.7g NH₄- N m⁻² was very close to the measured amount of 2.5 (± 1.35) g NH₄- N m⁻² , however the dynamics were not as close to the measured values as with the nitrate leaching. The simulated amount of organic N leached was approximately double that measured, and most of the difference originated from the simulated de-adsorption of the dissolved fraction of organic N during the l0-month period after the final DFE irrigation. The 305 g C m⁻² of simulated particulate C leached was close to the measured amount of 224 g C m⁻² over the 31 months of simulation. The dissolved C fraction was substantially over-predicted. There was good agreement in the non-adsorbed and particulate fractions of the leached C and N in DFE. However, the isothermic behaviour of the adsorbed pools indicated that a non-reversible component needed to be introduced or that the dynamics of the de-adsorption needed to be improved. Taking into account that the parameters were not calibrated but only "initial best estimates", the agreement in the dynamics and the absolute amounts between the measured and simulated values of leached C and N demonstrated that CaNS-Eff contains an adequate description of the leaching processes following DFE irrigation onto the soil. The simulated pasture N production was in reasonable agreement with the measured data. The simulated dynamics and amounts of microbial biomass in the topsoil layers were in good agreement with the measured data. This is an important result as the soil microbial biomass is the key transformation station for organic materials. Excepting the topsoil layer, the simulated total C and N dynamics were close to the measured values. The model predicted an accumulation of C and N in the topsoil layer as expected, but not measured. Although no measurements were available to compare the dynamics and amounts of the soil NO₃-N and NH₄-N, the simulated values appear realistic for an effluent treatment site and are consistent with measured pasture data. Considering the large amount of total N and C applied onto the lysimeters over the 42 months of operation (4 t ha⁻¹ of N and 42 t ha⁻¹0f C), the various forms of C and N in dissolved and particulate DFE as well as in returned pasture, and that the parameters used in the test have not been calibrated, the simulated values from CaNS-Eff compared satisfactorily to the measured data.
