Narratives of incest

Incest is described by various models focusing on different factors ranging from pathology to descriptions of the ecosystem in which it takes place. This research presents a theoretical and practical description of father-daughter incest in a family where the father was not removed and includes narratives of all associated systems. Consistent with the postmodern, social constructionist and narrative theories, this study attempts to observe and describe the ensuing process of the incest narrative through the various systems within which it takes place. This process explores people's perceptions of incest, how these are assessed and interpreted, what kind of action they mapped out as a result and the possibility that the abusive narrative is being maintained. Implications for therapy with the incest family are discussed drawing on narrative principles. Deconstructing dominant stepfamily narratives : freeing silent voices

Stepfamilies are shown by existing research as having multiple problems unique to this type of family, some of which include role ambiguity, role strain, role captivity, increased stress and adjustment problems in children. Stepparents are portrayed as evil, abusive and wicked in the media, literature or film, while stepchildren are variously portrayed as victims, naughty and manipulative. These popular perceptions of stepfamilies appear to be shaped by myths or dominant narratives which serve to shape stepfamily member's experience of and roles in the reconstituted family. Drawing on the work of postmodernism, social constructionism and the narrative theorists this study will expose those dominant narrative or myths which shape the experience of two stepfamilies. The Experience of provocation in psychotherapy : a co-created description

Text in English / As some criticism and hesitations have been expressed with regard to the implementation of provocation in psychotherapy, this study aimed to explore the experiences of clients and a therapist who participated in provocative psychotherapy. In order to do this, a concise theoretical description of the nature of provocative psychotherapy was provided along the lines of the work of Frank Farrelly and Maurizio Andolfi. Participants' experiences of provocation in psychotherapy were consequently presented by means of three case studies. A description of the experience of provocation in psychotherapy was co-created through the identifying of certain themes underlying of the three client groups' and the therapist's descriptions of their experiences. The development of meaningful alternative descriptions of a painful situation within which people find themselves could create the possibility of movement taking place. · The development of alternative descriptions was discussed by means of the following components of a therapeutic conversation: The therapist uses the different punctuations of the family in their description of the problem and takes complementary descriptions into consideration. (Punctuation/complementation.) In the description of alternative realities the therapist uses a language that creates hope for change. (Reframing.) The therapist listens to the family with respect and endeavours to hear the family's themes, to understand and to use them. (Language.) The therapist, by asking questions of which the answers facilitate further questions, accepts the responsibility to facilitate discussions that encourage participation in the therapeutic process. (Participation/questions leading to further questions.) The discussion was based on a constructivist approach. A case history was described to illustrate how meaningful alternative descriptions were developed in a therapeutic conversation. / In hierdie studie is 'n beskrywing van die ontwikkeling van betekenisvolle alternatiewe konstruksies gegee. Disputed custody and the people involved : an ecosystemic perspective

Custody disputes have traditionally been considered a legal matter. More recent trends have seen the recognition of divorce and custody as both legal and psychological events. This necessitated the involvement of professionals of the helping services in custody recommendations. Such a multidisciplinary approach is currently taken by the Office of the Family Advocate, Pretoria, in disputed custody matters. It is suggested that the way in which the problem of custody is currently defined, is on a pragmatic level, and does not include a higher-order awareness as implied by an ecosystemic epistemology. Such an awareness denotes self-reflexivity, and calls for a more aesthetic emphasis. The dialectic between aesthetics and pragmatics is maintained by means of a descriptive look at the various systems involved in a disputed custody case. Adopting an ecosystemic epistemology is recommended, through the metaphor of mediation, as a further evolution of an already changing process. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Family Therapy training programmes have recently come to appreciate the importance of addressing the personal growth of the trainee-therapist, in addition to the traditional focus on skill development. Suggestions in the available literature on how this "person-of-the-therapist" issue could best be addressed, represent almost exclusively the ideas of authorities (authors, clinicians and trainers) in the field of systemic therapy. Constructivist thought endorsed by the UNISA training programme, encourages and values different viewpoints. According to this view, students and faculty co-construct the training process. The aim of this study is therefore to present the voice of the trainee. Several training contexts, the essential qualities of the different supervisory relationships and difficulties encountered, are explored from the trainee's perspective. It is hoped that this "inside story" about the author's experiences on her journey toward becoming a psychotherapist, will engender sensitivity for and a deeper understanding of the complexity involved in training the person of the therapist. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Gesinne met aangenome kinders bevind hulself soms in moeilike situasies en benodig dan ondersteuning. Daarom is daar in hierdie studie besluit om ondersoek in te stel na die effek van gesinsterapie in gesinne met aangenome kinders. Die doel was om vas te stel in watter mate gesinne met aangenome kinders gehelp kan word om probleme te oorkom met gesinsterapie as terapeutiese intervensie. Die navorsing is gedoen aan die hand van 'n kwalitatiewe ontwerp waar data hoofsaaklik ingesamel is deur vraelyste, observasie en onderhoudvoering. Daar is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat gesinsterapie effektief gebruik kan word om hulp te verleen aan die gesin met aangenome kinders. Daar word as 'n span aan die probleme gewerk aangesien gesamentlike doelwitstelling-plaasvind en dit dien ook as 'n belangrike saambindende faktor van die gesinslede. AI die gesinslede se probleme kon gelyktydig aangespreek word in plaas van op 'n individuele basis. / Families with adopted children find themselves in a situation with unique demands made on them as a family as well as on an individual level as a parent or a child. They have to master the universal family challenges as well as the challenges of the family with adopted children. These families often find themselves in complex situations, which are difficult to handle and thus need the necessary support. The reason for this study was therefore to investigate the effect of family therapy in families with adopted children. The aim was to find out how effective a family with adopted children could be helped to solve the problems experienced with family therapy as therapeutic intervention. A qualitative analysis was conducted and data was gathered primarily through questionnaires, observation and interviewing. The results of the research led to the conclusion that family therapy was indeed an effective therapeutic intervention as far as families with adopted children were concerned. It provided the family to work together as a team and created unity. All the family members' problems could also be addressed at once instead of individually. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. We have witnessed a significant increase in the demand for psychological care in public and private health services. Given this scenario, this work aimed to investigate, through Winnicott clinical cases and vignettes of my professional practice, the specificities, the possible dialogues with the parents and the therapeutic possibilities of the clinic with adolescents, from a Winnicottian perspective. To this end, a study was made of the emergence of the notion of adolescence, as we conceive it today and of the maturational process characteristic of this phase, from the Freudian postulates to the formulation of contemporary psychoanalysts, with special emphasis on Winnicottian theory, for contemplating these aspects more comprehensively. It was evidenced that the psychoanalytic process can offer subsidies to help adolescents in their difficulties and contribute to maturity at this stage. The professional who has the purpose of providing care for adolescents needs to prepare for this type of work. The winnicottian clinic has as main specificities the need to know the process of maturation, because the disturbances are understood as paralyzes in the course of this process; the expansion of the analytical setting, to include the family, the school, among others; the use of management; the provision of a facilitating environment for maturation; besides the care of the analyst with his own maturity. Follow-up with parents is valued and carried out wherever possible because they are understood as enabling environments for maturation for their children. The therapeutic possibilities vary according to the needs and possibilities of each case, being related to the resumption of developments that were interrupted and the propitiation of the maturation inherent to that phase. Because it is qualitative research, these data can not be generalized, however, it has been shown that the possibility of helping young people in this phase can contribute so that they can develop their true self to live creatively and feel that their life is full of meanings / Atualmente, as transformações decorrentes da globalização, do avanço tecnológico e das novas condições de ser e de viver têm gerado inúmeras dificuldades que se agravam a cada dia, levando a um aumento preocupante de psicopatologias acometendo adolescentes no mundo todo. Temos presenciado um significativo aumento na procura por atendimento psicológico nos serviços de saúde da rede pública e privada. Diante desse cenário, este trabalho teve por objetivo investigar, por meio de casos clínicos de Winnicott e vinhetas de minha prática profissional, as especificidades, as possíveis interlocuções com os pais e as possibilidades terapêuticas da clínica com adolescentes, numa perspectiva winnicottiana. Para isso, partiu-se de um estudo sobre o surgimento da noção de adolescência, como a concebemos hoje e do processo maturacional característico dessa fase, desde os postulados freudianos até formulações de psicanalistas contemporâneos, com especial ênfase na teoria winnicottiana, por contemplar esses aspectos de modo mais abrangente. Evidenciou-se que o processo psicanalítico pode oferecer subsídios para ajudar os adolescentes em suas dificuldades e contribuir com o amadurecimento nessa fase. O profissional que tem o propósito de oferecer cuidados aos adolescentes precisa se preparar para esse tipo de trabalho. A clínica winnicottiana possui como principais especificidades a necessidade de se conhecer o processo de amadurecimento, pois os distúrbios são entendidos como paralizações no decurso desse processo; a ampliação do setting analítico, para abarcar a família, a escola, entre outros; o uso do manejo; o oferecimento de ambiente de facilitação para o amadurecimento; além do cuidado do analista com o próprio amadurecimento. O acompanhamento com os pais é valorizado e realizado sempre que possível porque eles são entendidos como ambientes facilitadores do amadurecimento para seus filhos. As possibilidades terapêuticas variam de acordo com as necessidades e possibilidades de cada caso, estando relacionadas à retomada de desenvolvimentos que estavam interrompidos e à propiciação do amadurecimento inerente a essa fase. Por se tratar de pesquisa qualitativa esses dados não podem ser generalizados, no entanto, mostrou-se que a possibilidade de se ajudar os jovens nessa fase pode contribuir para que possam desenvolver seu self verdadeiro para viver criativamente e sentir que a sua vida é cheia de significações

Mental health education for mothers of children with depression

(Psychiatric Nursing) / In this research an attempt was made to identify manifestations of depression in black children and give mental health education to their mothers in an attempt to alleviate the state of depression in the children. A questionnaire was structured as a tool for collection data. The instrument was based on a standardized depression scale which was used cross-culturally by the World Health Organization during 1983. The non-probability sampling procedure was carried out utilising a purposive sampling method in compiling an experimental and a control group of mothers of depressed children in a quasi-experimental research design. A mental health education programme on depession was developed which was given to mothers in the experimental group. The individual method of teaching was utilised based on adult education principles. At the end of the mental health education session, each mother got a brochure in the language preferred by the mother. Mothers from the control group did not have any discussions on depression. The study was done over the period of three months from 6 August 1988 to 26 October 1988. The analysis of gathered data was computerised using the Mann-Whitney U-test of SPSSX for the independent group and the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test for the dependent groups. The non-parametric statistics of the Z-va1ue and two-tailed probability was utilised. The findings on the comparison. between the experimental group pretest and the control group pretest revealed that there were not any statistical difference in eight of the ten variables of depression i.e. helplessness, anxiety, sleep disturbance, school problems, interpersonal relations, self concept, guilt feelings and the disturbance of perception. The other two variables, suicide and physical functioning, were not included because they showed significant statistical difference prior to experimentation. There was no significant statistical difference between the eight variables of the state of depression in the findings of the control group pretest with the control group post test. That means that if mothers of depressed children do not receive mental health education, the children's state of depression could remain the same. In conclusion, mental health education to mothers of depressed children seems to have a positive effect on a child's emotional stability. It can contribute substantially to diminishing the occurance of childhood depression.
