La céramique achrome de l'Incoronata : concepts, terminologies, typologies d'une production indigène de l'Âge du Fer / Achromic pottery from Incoronata : concepts, terminologies, typologies of an Iron age indigenous production

Meadeb, François 21 January 2016 (has links)
This doctoral thesis constitutes an eminently ceramological investigation, within the historic background of the henomenon of the Greek «protocolonization» in Southern Italy, more particularly in the Ionian coast district. This survey takes into consideration the ceramic previously treated and said as «plain ware», class of material which outlines and definition are uncertain and particularly fluctuating. Indeed, contrary to the indigenous fine ware production or to the local greek production, among whom the forms and the ornamental motives are clearly recognizable, the common ceramic, whether it is of greek or indigenous production, appears as a class relatively little studied and functionally heterogeneous. Here we aim to study and to deepen the theoretical, abstract and anthropological perspectives, around this ceramic traditionally characterized by technical and esthetic criteria: namely a poor quality average, relatively simple forms and achromy, and a polyfonctionality to be defined; on the other hand we’ll try to propose a typo-chronological and contextualized catalog of the achromic ceramic material from Incoronata, excluding de facto the impasto class and the major containers.Obviously, it will be advisable to multiply the confrontations by being interested on one hand, to all the types of contexts, Greek, native or mixed, between the Metapontino and the Siritide, but also by widening the geographical frame to the Southern Italy and even beyond.

Poésie et argumentation dans les fragments des deux poèmes d'Empédocle / Poetry and Argumentation in the Fragments of Empedocles' two Poems

Gheerbrant, Xavier 11 October 2014 (has links)
The dissertation intends to examine the signification of Empedocles’ choice to express his philosophical system into a peculiar meter, the dactylic hexameter, which is not only considered here as a poetic form but also as a poetic tradition. The reasons why Empedocles made this choice may be studied from several points of view. From a historic and comparative point of view, Empedocles’ use of the dactylic hexameter has his philosophy embedded into a particular moment of the development of ancient « philosophy ». Another, sociological, dimension of this problem pertains to the traditional modes of diffusion of dactylic poems, within the frame of panhellenic competitions for instance.More fundamental even is the question of how necessary is the link between poetry and philosophy in Empedocles’ work itself. Is the dactylic meter merely ornamental for a thought that could have been expressed in prose? Is it some artificial varnish, whose only effect would be to obscure the philosophical message? Or does the use of verses show, on the contrary, a substantial stance, meaning that the interpretation of the poetic features and the interpretation of the philosophical doctrine cannot be dissociated? The poetic theory of Empedocles is examined in chapters 1 to 4. Then, a study of the poetic realization of this project takes place in chapters 5 to 7. Finally, an evaluation of the meaning and relevance of Empedocles’ choice in the context of the 5th century is done through the last 3 chapters.

Umenie sz. Anatólie v achajmenovskej dobe a jeho vztahy s gréckym a perskym umenim / The Art of North-Western Anatolia in the Achaemenid Persian Period and Its Relations with the Greek and Persian Art.

Vaškaninová, Valéria January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to determine and define the Persian Achaemenid style produced in the North-Western satrapies (imperial provinces) of Anatolia (modern Turkey) in the period of the Persian dominion of the area, roughly 550 - 300 BCE. The North-Western Anatolian satrapies are the II. nomos of Herodotus - Sardes, and Hellespontine Phrygia (the III. nomos). The roots of the Achaemenid style emerge from the rich artistic traditions of the cultures in the area of modern Iran influenced by Mesopotamian sources as well as nomadic handicrafts. The expansion of the Empire towards the Aegean resulted in extensive contacts with the creative expression of the Anatolian kingdoms and especially the Greek sphere. A unique style of luxurious ware, designated for customers of the local elite and Persian immigrants, is created. The depiction of the Persian court iconography is modified according to the local art-school customs. The clearest representation of the Achaemenid style is observed in the metalware production. The forms and designs of golden and silver vessels are specific. Despite their wide geographic distribution, the majority of the workshops were supposedly located in the area of modern Turkey. The production of jewelry and gems was most likely concentrated in the same workshops. The creative...

Tellier, Alexandre 10 1900 (has links)
The Archaic period lasts for 7 millennia yet remains largely unknown despite its importance. Pointe-Gatineau, an archaeological site near the Gatineau River delta, can increase our knowledge of the Archaic period. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the site was occupied during most of the period. These successive occupations result in an accumulation of archaeological deposits, which are difficult to link to a single occupation. This unresolved confusion restricts the interpretation that has been proposed so far. I put forward a spatial analysis approach with the aim of untangling Pointe-Gatineau’s many occupations. I favour a quantitative method to create groups of objects and attribute them to a temporal horizon through their association to a dated structure. This first step leads me to compare the site’s multiple occupational periods. I attempt a second comparative analysis with contemporary sites in the region: BiFw-20 and BiFw-26 in Kabeshinàn (Leamy Lake Park) as well as Rockcliffe Portage-1 (BiFw-91), Allumette Island (BkGg-11), Morrison Island (BkGg-12) and the parc national de Plaisance (BjFs-23). These comparative analyses focus on usage of space, faunal remains, debitage and lithic tools. This research project leads me to describe the transitions and gaps that are visible throughout Pointe-Gatineau’s long occupation and to better understand the site’s place in the middle Ottawa Valley. I conclude that the occupation is concentrated at the end of the Middle Archaic through the beginning of the Late Archaic. Pointe-Gatineau’s Terminal Archaic occupation appears marginal. I qualify the transition as gradual rather than abrupt in terms of subsistence and settlement patterns.

Paleoindian Lifeways of Paleoarchaic Peoples: A Faunal Analysis of Early Occupations at North Creek Shelter, Utah

Newbold, Bradley A. 22 April 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Recent archaeological research within the American west, especially the Great Basin (e.g., Graf and Schmitt 2007), has perpetuated the notion of decreased residential mobility accompanied by increased diet breadth of hunter-gatherer groups during the Early Holocene. The earliest occupations at North Creek Shelter (NCS), a multicomponent site in south-central Utah, date to this time, specifically the Paleoarchaic (~10,000-9000 BP) and Early Archaic (~9000-7500 BP) periods. The zooarchaeological data from these levels were analyzed to determine whether Paleoarchaic occupations on the Colorado Plateau possessed greater residential mobility and narrower diet breadth than those of the Early Archaic, as they do in the Great Basin. However, upon examination of the NCS data, neither seems to be the case, or at least not to the dramatic degree observed to the west, as settlement and subsistence strategies remain fairly constant throughout the Early Holocene.

Defining an Alternative Typology for Early Holocene Projectile Points from the Hester Site (22Mo569), Northeast Mississippi: A Systematic Approach

Burris, Agnes 13 May 2006 (has links)
There is a universally recognized need for a more refined chronological understanding of the Early Holocene in the Southeast. The Paleoindian/Early Archaic period deposits at the Hester site provide an opportunity to refine the local chronology for northeast Mississippi. Three-dimensional spatial analysis of these deposits revealed the presence of at least four distinct occupations. Attribute-level morphological analysis of projectile points excavated from these occupations indicated that base width, shoulder width, and basal indentation ratio, changed significantly through time. A paradigmatic classification system employing these attributes was used to classify the projectile points from Hester. These classes were successfully seriated indicating that they are true historical classes. The range of historical classes indicates that this alternative to the traditional point typology may provide greater chronological precision for the Early Holocene in northeast Mississippi.
