Artistic Interventions : Arts, Leadership and Self-development in Organisations

Bout, Jérôme, Mortier, Edouard January 2014 (has links)
Our society is changing, becoming a postmodern world with more attention paid to the emotional part of human beings. Organisations must develop new skills to enhance their members’ creativity and provide innovation in order to tackle new challenges. The transformation of our society provides also space for new thinking and new solutions; there is a need to be more open-minded. Organisational managers hence look into new directions to answer issues – one of them is the arts. One of arts’ manifestations in organisations is artistic interventions. Our study provides a presentation of this process, our understanding and reflection about this field and why we think it is relevant for the postmodern society in which we live. In this thesis we present our vision and theory of how a manager transforms themself into a leader through an artistic intervention and the impact on the organisational culture that the latter produces. We highlight the importance of the intervention’s follow-up and the way in which managers/leaders can lead this process to success. Our research is based on the existing literature in different fields that we have found relevant and that has enabled us to develop our own theory on the topic, with hope that it will interest other researchers to go further. In that sense, we give directions and reflections for future research.

My work is embodied in the relationship between the "expanded field of art" with the body, object and space. It turns out that during of the development of the thesis, I notice an obvious limits of this type of production to of the dissolution of the artistic field, increasingly subsumed by the sociological discourse, making it a sort of commodity to be traded as resistance art. The problem moves then to an investigation of appropriations that can be made that field - place without place - to incorporate them and transform them, at its base, so that art can still be produced once. And if, at first, the statement of a relationship between art and life becomes a militant way, programmatic and pragmatic, in a next moment requires a reflexive deepening method and language. The solution I found, caused by the tension of the current political moment, was to turn my attention to work betting on negativity, in exploring the dimension of emptiness and silence, thinking the lack as a possibility to add an idea, through the viewer's imagination. The practical result is the creation of a glass box, designed to fill the space of a door by means of resonance sound effect and vibration speakers, revealing a small continuous motion. My intention with this is to suggest a situation of instability and the imminence of a possible tragedy, condensing the premises of the field expanded into the critique of institutional debate.

[en] MATTER AND SPACE: PROPOSALS ROBERT SMITHSON AND ART PROJECT / CITY / [pt] MATÉRIA E ESPAÇO: AS PROPOSTAS DE ROBERT SMITHSON E O PROJETO ARTE/CIDADE

07 December 2021 (has links)
[en] From the concept of intervention of Robert Smithson created in the late 60s, it transforms the very idea of site initially used in the works of Land Art, while working in a targeted manner to specific sites and allows different layers of meaning are excavated present at these sites, confirming the ability of art to penetrate matters of political, economic, social and cultural nature and introduce a critical eye on the urban situation. Such contributions Smithson based project interventions Art / Town in its four modules conducted in the city of São Paulo, in the period 1997-1997. Facilities project took into consideration the urban scale as well as social and political aspects which threaten areas chosen and emphasized contradictions, loss of referrals and transformation within the metropolis. Search in the present work was to evaluate the contributions of the third module of the project, The City & Histories held in São Paulo in 1997, and its links with history, heritage and use of urban space in the metropolis.

Identitet i arbete(t) : Chefers reflektioner om arbetets dimensioner / Identity at work : Managers’ reflections about dimensions at work

Zambrell, Katarina January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to identify, describe and develop the understanding of what aspects at work are important for individuals' identity construction. In this understanding-oriented study the empirical data consists of three different groups: middle managers, cultural workers and “Airis-managers”. I have interpreted and analysed the 75 respondents’ stories, and in their experiences found similar patterns. My conclusion is that there are different dimensions at work that may affect the identity construction. My research question: What is it about work that is experienced as important for individuals’ identity construction? can be answered with the five different identity-related dimensions that I have identified: the enabling dimension, the legitimating dimension, the strengthening dimension, the touching dimension and the constraining dimension. All these dimensions, except the constraining dimension, contribute positively to identity construction. The constraining dimension can be compensated if the other positively confirming dimensions dominate. The identity construction for each individual appears different depending on what dimensions he/she experiences. That is why work’s impacts on the individual's identity construction vary. In order to illustrate the developed typology of identity-related dimensions, I created a model that aims to facilitate understanding of what aspects at work that may be important for the personal identity. When raising awareness of these dimensions, efforts to strengthen the most important dimensions can be made. Through their leadership and ways of organizing work, managers may influence their employees’ opportunities to construct and strengthen their identity. Much of the identity research discusses the more conscious identity work. In my third study my empirical data consists of managers’ who have brought artists into their organizations, i.e. conducted an artistic intervention called Airis. My interpretation is that implementing an artistic intervention can be considered as a way to challenge and develop the managers’ identity and be a part of their identity work. This thesis deals with “identity at work” (to reconnect to the title). People seldom discuss “identity construction” but that does not mean that identity issues are unimportant. On the contrary, people often talk about their jobs and their work experiences. What this "talk" really means is what this thesis highlights: Identity is constructed and confirmed at work, especially when others are told about the work-related experiences.

Rama Sotos, Tamara 28 October 2021 (has links)
[EN] This doctoral thesis explores and reflects on the concept of the kaleidoscopic view, assuming this gaze in a broad sense; that is, beyond what is observed in a kaleidoscope. Specifically, the object of study determines the repercussions of this kaleidoscopic polyvision in plastic art and animation, with an image shaped by mobility, symmetrical reiteration, fragmentation and reintegration. Moreover, the kaleidoscopic dynamics are intensified by subverting the orders through the variation of certain elements. In this way, the significance of the most unique patterns is exposed, incorporating elements of modification or rupture in the disintegration of the kaleidoscopic language, with the aim of deconstructing the arrangement of the network by altering the symmetry. Similarly, the focus is shifted to less linear structures as alternatives to the continuous, uniform, closed patterns, through a decentring and greater opening. In the creative processes, a set of works in a contemporary context can generate multiple facets and diverse readings that stimulate creativity. Therefore, this repercussion will be analysed through significant works of plastic art and animation films, and applying alternative methods that can alter the conventional structure. Furthermore, there will be a conceptual and formal exploration and contextualisation of this vision, together with a discussion of optical toys linked to the reflex image, including the kaleidoscope. By so doing, the evolution of the object and its optics are analysed, passing through small and large artefacts, examining both the common elements and the differences, until we reach the confluence of these optics in the present-day large-format artefacts. This approach is intended to open the gaze and allow for a broader, interconnected and diverse understanding, incorporating aspects of evolution. At the same time, it is shown how this optic is nowadays is ultimately applied to installations or innovative artistic intervention. At the same time, it can be seen that it is not only a vision in art, but also the idea of growth extends out to life, relating to the environment as a series of woven, interacting patterns. In this sense, the concept of "extimacy" (extimité), a term coined by Jacques Lacan in the 20th century, is applied, as it expresses the interrelationship between exterior/interior in a game of inversion, where the intimate passes to the exterior and vice versa. In the thesis, this notion is extrapolated to the art of the kaleidoscope because it externalises something that is inside, and within the kaleidoscopic view there is a synchrony between the external and internal world that conveys this vision. / Rama Sotos, T.
