Physical attractiveness and economic success

Kaczorowski, Janusz. January 1998 (has links)
Using interviewers' ratings of respondents' physical appearance this study examined the relationship between physical attractiveness and wages treating the former as marginal to a baseline, human-capital derived equation. To test the hypotheses about the consequences of physical attractiveness alone or conditioned by other factors on earnings and wage growth we estimated wage and wage growth equations using 3 cross-sectional and 3 panel data sets derived from the Canadian Quality of Life survey. The cross-sectional estimates indicated that the effect of physical attractiveness on earnings was a plausible one and likely to be conditioned by other characteristics such as firm size, occupation, union membership, frequency of on-the-job supervision, and level of formal schooling. The 'above average' rated workers received pay premia ranging from +2.2% to 6.1% while those 'below average' received pay penalties ranging from-2.7% to -13.0% relative to the grand mean. The 'average' rated workers received pay penalties ranging from -0.7% to -3.4%. The main source of these wage differentials appears to be discrimination based on looks. The results of panel specifications also provided some support for the notion that physical attractiveness ratings were associated with differential wage growth and that the relationship between physical attractiveness and wage growth might be moderated by other individual or institutional characteristics of the workers, especially before adjustments for the lagged effects of wages were made. Overall, these results provide a moderate level of support for the thesis that physical attractiveness plays a role in the wage determination process in modern labour markets.

Breast cancer : the social construction of beauty and grieving

Greene, Saara. January 1996 (has links)
Coming to terms with breast loss and its effect on body image, femininity and self-esteem are major issues confronting women who have lost a breast to cancer. Furthermore, messages from the media, cosmetic industry and health care profession perpetuate the 'beauty myth' affecting the self-esteem of breast cancer patients. This emphasis on the aesthetic often takes precedence the grief associated with losing a body part that for many women is strongly linked to their self-concept. Based on interviews with nine breast cancer survivors in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Montreal, Quebec, three issues will be addressed: first how the cultural influences that support and perpetuate the 'beauty myth' affect breast cancer survivors; how, as a result of this issue, the grieving process is hindered and third, the experiences of women treated for breast cancer within the medical system. Implications for social work will also be discussed.

Physical attractiveness : the affect on perceived quality in clothing

Robbins, Audrey A. January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine the perception of apparel quality based on perceived physical attractiveness of both the observer and model. Although there is research about apparel quality, what people view as physically attractive, and how people determine what is attractive, there has been little research about the relationship between these variables as well as observer background.Ninety-three Fashion Merchandising/Apparel Design and non majors completed one of two versions of a survey. The survey was presented on-line and included a picture that participants were asked to assess model attractiveness and apparel quality. A second version included a different model wearing similar clothing. Participants were also asked to rate their own attractiveness in relationship to the model and what quality features they consider when purchasing clothing.Frequencies and a two way ANOVA analysis revealed a statistically significant difference for model viewed/survey completed. Ratings of quality characteristics correlated to form a scale of quality. Education background influenced responses. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
