Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this dissertation the Youth ministry of the Nkhoma Synod Church of Central Africa Presbyterian from 1889-2010 is discussed. The manuscript strives to determine the theological foundation of the Youth ministry by answering the question; “What has been the theological foundation of the Nkhoma synod Youth ministry from 1889 to 2010?” To answer this question the researcher has indicated what programs have been arranged for the Youth and with the Youth and has indicated as far as possible how this was done. The researcher continued his research by determining why the programs were implemented in that specific manner to determine the motivation for the implementation of the program. The researcher presents a historical overview of the development of the Youth ministry in this manuscript from which the theological foundation of the Nkhoma synod Youth ministry will be determined.
Chapter One gives a brief summary of the development of the Youth ministry in the Nkhoma synod as a background against which the researcher motivates the research and describes the research question.
Chapter Two describes the research methodology, methods of data collection and data analysis, the ethical aspects of the research and the manner of pretesting that was used during the research.
Chapter Three presents an overview of the geographical, socio-cultural and historic-political environment to describe the context within which the Youth ministry of the Nkhoma synod developed. The description of the above developments enables the reader to understand the framework within which the Youth ministry of the Nkhoma synod developed. Chapter Four presents an overview of the establishment and development of the Nkhoma synod with regard to the school system. It continues to describe the government’s increased influence and takeover of the school system and the accompanying developments that took place due to the above-mentioned removal of the school system from the Nkhoma synod.
Chapter Five describes the development of the youth ministry with regard to the activities and programs run within the Church structures of the Nkhoma synod. It includes the development of a Family ministry, Christian Education and Church Youth movements.
Chapter Six briefly states the theological foundation of the Nkhoma synod and and proceeds to explain how the theological foundation of the Youth ministry of the Nkhoma synod was determined. It describes five theological terms, eight modes of ministry and four approaches to ministry, that are used to determine the theological foundation of the Youth ministry as described in chapters Four and Five
In Chapter Seven the semi-structured interviews are analysed to identify recurring themes and possible discrepancies that might surface. The literature study, as found in chapters Four and Five, is analysed using a thematic content analyses, with reference to the modes and approaches to ministry as discussed in chapter Six. It is affirmed that the theological foundation of the Youth ministry is based upon the Word of God and the Catechism of Heidelberg and that the approach to ministry is preparatory and evangelical.
In Chapter Eight the whole dissertation is summarized, conclusions are drawn and possible recommendations are made with the aim of improving the present Youth ministry. The researcher also identifies possible areas for future studies.

Urban poverty as a challenge for ministry within the Malawian contextJoda-Mbewe, Osborne Lukiel, Hendriks, H. J. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DTh)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation develops a theory for doing Malawian urban ministry called "Holistic hermeneutical practical theology." The effects of urbanization: secularization, disorientation, poverty and pollution in Malawi's urban centers make it difficult for the CCAP to implement successful ministry that deals with the shantytowns' circumstances. Chapter one: The first chapter describes the Malawian urban context. It defines the five components of the researcher's topic of study: "Urban poverty as a challenge for ministry within the Malawian (African) context" and the three components of the methodology: "Holistic hermeneutical practical theology." Four relational hypotheses are formulated to guide the study. Different research methods applied to gathering information for chapters of this dissertation are documented at the end of this chapter. Chapter two: The second chapter examines the CCAP's existing ministry practice and addresses the first hypothesis: "Its rural background and theory of ministry prevent the CCAP from developing an effective urban ministry that adequately addresses the problems of the poor." The missionaries introduced a comprehensive ministry approach to the early leaders of the CCAP Nkhoma Synod. In the process of blending the missionary approach to ministry in the local Chewa context, a philosophy of ministry that emphasizes spiritual salvation (neglecting the physical needs) was developed in the CCAP Nkhoma Synod. This approach poses a problem for the Church to adequately address the physical needs and realities of Malawians in the cities. Chapter three: The third chapter discusses the poverty situations of Malawian and South African shantytowns and slums and is the result of research conducted in order to examine the validity of the four hypotheses. The responses of the groups interviewed were helpful for an understanding of the current congregational challenges and ministry opportunities in urban areas. This chapter addresses issues of this thesis positively: research objectives, the population growth data of urban inter-censal, a brief historical description of Malawian cities, the government efforts to address urban challenges and problems, the CCAP ministry approach to urban ministry, and a brief description of two South African poverty scenarios. The research reveals that the church and the government work independently of each other. In this way the validity of the third hypothesis: "A holistic approach to urban ministry with joint forums for development is needed to address urban poverty problems," is confirmed. Chapter four: This chapter describes the extent of poverty in Malawi, which is most disturbing. The recent studies on Malawian poverty indicate that the poverty scenario is a pervasive problem affecting approximately 60% of the population; urban poverty, in particular, is 65%. Furthermore, chapter four discusses a number of issues, some of which are: a description and Christian views of the poor, an overview definition of urban poverty, the causes of poverty and the vocation of the urban church. The cities' informal economies can make a huge difference in the lives of the poor. All of the four hypotheses form the background to this chapter. Chapter five: Chapter five examines four different approaches of the urban ministry in poverty areas. The purpose of this chapter is to understand the approaches of current work in poverty areas. Various approaches are discussed: community organization, effective congregationally based advocacy ministries, a liberation model, and a church in solidarity with the poor and oppressed. This chapter repeatedly confirms the first and the fourth hypotheses. Chapter six: In this chapter the theory of a holistic, hermeneutical practical theology is applied to a number of activities called pillars, juxtapositioning it with the four hypotheses. This is presented as a model for doing urban ministry in Malawian (African) cities. In the process of describing or developing the model, the four hypotheses - that have already been thoroughly proved and discussed - now serve as orientation markers pointing the CCAP towards its future role in urban ministry. The model emphasizes a hermeneutic-communicative praxis, which makes it constantly concerned with understanding the Christian meaning produced in the past, and relating it to interaction with the present-day faith community. Thus, the church in urban Malawi will address the challenges presented by the effects of urbanization and industrialization. The model's ten pillars are discussed: i) ministry in a new era and context, ii) urban ministry among the poor requires community participation, iii) proclaiming the Gospel in word and deed, iv) Christian faith development, v) urban evangelism, vi) effective pastoral care, vii) the need to build faith communities, viii) the need to equip the urban mission, ix) moving towards ecumenical alliances in African cities, and x) the importance of congregational studies. Chapter seven is a summary and conclusion of the dissertation. It discusses issues of this thesis positively: orientation of the study hypotheses, congregational study methods used in each chapter, the study's path and results, the contribution the study has made to the existing knowledge, and the conclusion of the whole dissertation. Urbanization is Africa's new missionary challenge for this century. The Christian task in Africa is the mission of the continent, which is in the process of rapid urbanization. If the church delays its adaptation to the urban context (the theories of which are changing constantly) it will forsake her strategic mission of being a foreign body in the world, where the old and new overlap in her, rendering her too early for heaven and too late for the earth.
gemeenskapsorganisasie, doeltreffende gemeentelik-gebaseerde voorspraakbedienings,
geloofsgemeenskap, in verband bring.
geloofsontwikkeling, v) stedelike evangelisasie, vi) doeltreffende pastorale sorg, vii)
werk.

State : analysis of the action of Gabon for the peace and the security in Central Africa, a foreign policy in the service of the construction and the conservation of the insideMvé ebang, Bruno 27 March 2014 (has links)
Africa is the region of the world, in which, exists the largest number of bloody armed crises. Since the independences, this region has never really known peace and security in all its regional entities. In this somber african board, Central Africa occupies an unenviable place. Abandoned in its sad fate at the end of the Cold War, countries, such as the Gabon, decided to direct particularly their foreign policy with the aim of helping states in crises, of its immediate environment, to cover a certain stability But especially in a logic of national reassurance. Small country of Central Africa, the Gabon feels the effects of the persistent regional instability. This Gabonese commitment for the peace was not born with its entry in the sovereignty. It built itself over the years. Its action for its building and national security has never aimed at reproducing exactly the same model of stability which it can but only arrive at the silence of weapons. It is obvious that as any political commitment, the gabonese regional action presents certain limits and the state should take measures aiming at a better international assertion. Nevertheless, the action of such country is important because by prioritizing the dialogue, they supply a painstaking job which manages, all the same, to put an end to the bloodsheds and to their tendency to the overflowing.

Contribution à l'étude des traceurs de la glaciation Marinoenne du bassin du Niari-Nyanga, Afrique Centrale / Contribution to the study of marinoan glaciation markers of the Niari-Nyanga basin, Central AfricaMickala, Olivia-Rosereine 26 June 2014 (has links)
Within West-Congolian Supergroup of Niari-Nyanga Basin (Central Africa), the markers of Sturtian and Marinoan Global Glaciations are documented by the so-called «Lower Diamictite» and «Upper Diamictite». This work is based on 6 and 2 lithological sections from the basin and the external zone of the Mayombe fold belt. It corresponds to a high-resolution study of the Cap Carbonate lying unconformably on the Upper Diamictite. Petrographic analyses show preservation of primary sedimentary structures and lead to define six microfacies (MF0 to MF5). These microfacies caracterize paleoenvironments such as inter- to supratidal or subtidal types. Kübler index values of the studied Cap Carbonate display an increasing evolution from East to West, ie from a deep diagenesis in the basin to an epimetamorphism in the Mayombe external zone. Stable isotope signature ([delta]13C, [delta]18O) of the various components of this Cap Carbonate is reproducible throughout the basin as in the Mayombe external zone, with [delta]13C values displaying a negative excursion, decreasing from -2.6 ? to -5.6 ?. [delta]18O values of these components vary between -6 ? and -12 ?. Moreover, comparison between mineralogic, chemical and isotopic data indicates that post-sedimentary transformations had a very negligible influence on the isotopic signature of the Cap Carbonate, indicating preservation of d13C values of the Neoproterozoic ocean. Finally, when they are compared with other regional studies, all data of the present work and the preliminary results of the GLANEC Projects lead to the conclusion that the SCIa Member of the Niari-Nyanga Basin must be considered as a Cap Carbonate related to the Marinoan Global Glaciation.

Comércio, bens de prestígio e insígnias de poder: as agências centro-ocidentais africanas nos relatos de viagem de Henrique de Carvalho em sua expedição à Lunda (1884-1888) / Trade, prestige goods and insignias of power: African western central agencies in the travel writings of Henrique de Carvalho on his expedition to Lunda (1884-1888).Almeida, Márcia Cristina Pacito Fonseca 03 February 2016 (has links)
During the second half of the nineteenth century, West-Central Africa was the stage of an intensification of European expeditions that channeled economic, political and scientific interests towards the continents interior. The following study intends to analyze the important role occupied by material culture in the scientific agenda of the portuguese expedition to the Lunda headed by military leader Henrique de Carvalho between 1884 and 1888. We also intend to evaluate the potential that the study of such objects provide like sources for a broader understanding about African agencies historical. For this purpose, we selected the works Descripção da Viagem à Mussumba do Muatiânvua (1890-1894) and Ethnographia e História Tradicional dos Povos da Lunda (1890) and in a complementary way, the Album da Expedição ao Muatianvua (1887) and Collecção Henrique de Carvalho (Expedição à Lunda), published by the Geographical Society of Lisbon (1896). Thus, from the perspective of social history, we intend to investigate how the requirements and predilections manifested in Central-African societies for certain items shaped the commercial relationships established during this period. We also address the process of the incorporation and resignification of objects - particularly prestige goods and insignia of power and how material culture can be interpreted as identity expressions, social codes and political hierarchies within those societies and their relations with the Europeans.

Sociabilidades em trânsito: os carregadores do comércio de longa distância na Lunda (1880-1920) / Sociabilities in transit: long distance porters and the trade in Lunda, 1870-1920Santos, Elaine Ribeiro da Silva dos 14 April 2016 (has links)
This study is about long distance porters and the trade in Lunda between 1870 and 1920. I argue that porters played a very important role in the operation of regional trade, being responsible for moving goods and informations in very distance areas. My analysis covers several elements: how porters articulated trade caravans, how they organized themselves in different groups permeated by different social hierarchies, the variety of transported goods and trade routes. These elements reveal the dynamism of long-distance trade - extremely important to the vitality of Lunda societies.

Portugais, Néerlandais et Africains en Angola aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles : construction d'un espace colonial / The Portuguese, Dutch and Africans in Angola during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries : the making of a colonial territoryDemaret, Mathieu 06 February 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to question the nature of the Portuguese presence in Angola during the 16th and 17th centuries, a period which corresponds to the rise of the transatlantic slave trade in the South Atlantic Ocean. We pay particular attention to the distinctive features of the Portuguese presence: firstly, we insist on its territorial nature, that differentiates it from other African areas where Europeans went no further than setting up trading posts on the coastline; secondly, we focus on the Luso-Dutch rivalry that took place during the first half of the 17th century, leading to one of the first intra-European confrontations on sub-Sahara African soil. The first four chapters address the question of the colonial territory: they cover the period from 1483, when the Portuguese reached the mouth of the Congo River, to 1671, date of the decisive Portuguese victory over the Ndongo kingdom for the control of the Luanda hinterland. We analyse the stages in the formation of this territory by focusing on the interactions between African and European political powers. This focus leads us to take a special interest in the colonial powers' attempts at delimiting the colonial territory, a delimitation based on both the action of the colonial agents and the production of new geographical knowledge. In the fifth and final chapter, we analyse the social dynamics and characteristics of the agents that constitute what we see as a new emerging colonial society.

Dynamique évolutive des forêts tropicales humides d'Afrique centrale : cas d'étude de la famille des palmiers (Arecaceae) / Evolutionary dynamics of tropical rain forests in Central Africa : case study of palm family (Arecaceae)Faye, Adama 11 December 2015 (has links)
Tropical rain forests (TRF) biodiversity is not equally distributed between the three main tropical regions: Neotropics, South East Asia and tropical Africa. Even though African rain forests display high levels of diversity and endemism, this diversity is low compared to that of the other tropical regions. One of the main hypotheses advanced to explain this lower species diversity is that the African flora has undergone higher extinction rates during the Cenozoic. Across the Congo basin, high levels of species diversity and endemism is thought to be linked to the hypothesis of forest refugia. This hypothesis suggests a contraction of rain forests in 'refugia' during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, between 24’000 and 12’000 Years). The aim of this thesis is to study the evolution of African rain forests in response to climate change on ancient (million years) and more recent (thousands of years) time scales. For this we study two groups of African palms: the rattans of the sub-tribe Ancistrophyllinae and the understory genus of Central African TRF Podococcus with two species P. barteri and P. acaulis. The first group provides information about ancient extinctions events during the Cenozoic, while the second is used to study the response of TRF during Pleistocene climate change in Central Africa. The approach used in this thesis is to 1) reconstruct the evolutionary history of African rattans, and 2) to infer the evolutionary dynamics of the two species of Podococcus through time. The five specific objectives structuring two main parts of the thesis are: First part: (i) reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among Ancistrophyllinae using plastid and nuclear markers, (ii) estimate divergence times and test the impact of extinction events on Ancistrophyllinae. Second part: (iii) build ecological niche models and infer the areas of habitat stability of the two species of Podococcus from the LGM, (iv) reconstruct phylogeographic relationships of populations of Podococcus from whole plastomes obtained using Next Generation Sequencing and (v) assess the correlation between genetic diversity and ecological niche stability of all populations of Podococcus. Results suggest that Ancistrophyllinae has possibly undergone a constant diversification with a relatively high extinction rate punctuated by one or more severe extinction events during the Cenozoic. Ancistrophyllinae diverged during the Eocene with most species originating to the Late Miocene after 10 Ma. In the genus Podococcus, a significant correlation between the unique genetic diversity and habitat stability was demonstrated supporting the hypothesis of forests refugia in Central Africa. Ecologically stable and diverse populations are mainly located in mountainous areas such as Monts de Cristal and Monts Doudou in Gabon, but also in the Atlantic coastal forests in Gabon and Cameroon. In contrast, most of the populations predate the LGM reflecting that species respond over several glacial cycles. Results of this thesis highlight that ancient and recent climate changes have strongly influenced the evolution and dynamics of Central African forests. In addition, our results allowed the identification of African Atlantic coastal forests as an important conservation priority.

: Le cas de la république centrafricaine / Commercial hunting in Central Africa : a threat for the biodiversity or a sustainable economic activity ? : The case of Central African RepublicFargeot, Christian 17 December 2013 (has links)
In central Africa, commercial hunting strongly contributes to the protein supply of rural and urban households. It is accused of wildlife resources overexploitation, with very negative impacts on animal biodiversity and forest regeneration and with important risks of emergent diseases development. From the Central African Republic case, we want to show that: commercial hunting has a long history, which begins with European colonization and goes on until today, without breaking, but with different actors ; takings mainly focuse small and medium wildlife which naturally has very strong dynamics of reproduction and which supports high pressures of hunting; Bushmeat, especially smoked meat, plays an important part for food safety of rural and urban poorest; distribution of this food products involves various actors of informal economy; this sector is illegal, but never criminal; bushmeat is not in open access, but the network is strongly controlled by social, economic, geographical and technical constraints. From these reports, we propose a new policy approach to wildlife management in central Africa, favoring an adaptive management of common fauna based on village territory, focusing State on its kingly functions to organize proteinic food safety for all people and orientating research towards small fauna biology and local communities technical support.

Sociabilidades em trânsito: os carregadores do comércio de longa distância na Lunda (1880-1920) / Sociabilities in transit: long distance porters and the trade in Lunda, 1870-1920Elaine Ribeiro da Silva dos Santos 14 April 2016 (has links)
