No. of bitstreams: 1 Carla Pontes Donnamaria.pdf: 905450 bytes, checksum: 3479833c836d2726b7768f1e376f0901 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-12-03 / The present study has had as its goal to study couples emotional experiences who have transformed virtual bonds into marital ones. We have tried to describe the conditions of the virtual experience that are favorable to the generation of a bond, to analyze its evolution and the possibilities of convergence and divergence between expectations and realizations after the transposition to real life. This study, defined as qualitative, was conducted by the application of investigative psychoanalytical method. Three couples have participated in this study, with ages between 29 and 33 years old, all with graduation degrees. One interview was conducted with each couple, the Content Analysis proposed by Mathieu was applied to the results, which were interpreted according to psychoanalysis reference of bonding configurations and group psychoanalysis. The research led us to recognize that, despite the possibility of knowing traces of the other s personality in a virtual bond, it is the physical presence that will define its realization. We conclude that, for the realization of a romantic bond, the internet is characterized as a condition, from which the bond is constructed by stages like identification of intentions and values, mutual desire, confirmation of data as reality and the establishment of the first face to face encounter, in a process where good or bad results depend mostly of the maturity of the ones involved as well as of its physical presence contact.

Estudo da difusão entre a fase intermetálica  Υ-TiAl e Fe / Aço / Study of the diffusion between ?-TiAl intermetallic phase and Fe / Steel

Silva, Paulo Ricardo Soares Azevedo e 25 August 2015 (has links)
Intermetallic compounds based on titanium aluminides are considered promising for structural applications in high temperatures. They presented mainly low density (3.2 to 4.2 g/cm3), high melting point (1400 to 1500 °C) and high mechanical strength between 600 and 950 °C. The study of diffusion between ?-TiAl and Fe-rich materials is important to observe phenomena and obtain relevant data joining these materials with steel - the most versatile metal alloy known. Components such as automotive turbochargers will benefit from the development and application of TiAl alloys, and represents an important aspect the junction between TiAl wheel and steel shaft component. The work was performed in three steps: obtaining ?-TiAl intermetallic single-phase; investigation of ?-TiAl/Fe diffusion couples; and investigation of ?-TiAl/Steel diffusion couples. Alloys with Ti50Al50 and Ti47Al53 compositions were made and characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS microanalysis, X-rays diffraction and hardness tests. The ?-TiAl and ?2-Ti3Al phases were observed in several microstructures according to the chemical composition and the sample heat-treatment. The lattice parameters and volumetric fractions of ?-TiAl and ?2-Ti3Al phases was determined by X-ray diffraction by the Rietveld method. The average hardness found in TiAl samples was 272-340 HV500. The Ti47Al53 alloy heattreated at 1200 °C for 7 days showed ?-TiAl single-phase and it was chosen for diffusion couples investigations. Microstructural characterization, dilatometry tests, hardness tests, and chemical analysis was performed on a steel sample removed from the automotive turbocharger shaft. The ?-TiAl/Fe and ?-TiAl/Steel diffusion couples were made and heattreated at 800, 1000, 1200 °C for 24 hours and were microstructurally characterized by SEM/EDS. In couples made of Iron, lower heat-treatment temperatures allowed the highest attachment regions of the material and smaller amounts of cracks was found, probably due to lower internal stress during cooling. In the couples made of steel, it was observed the formation of Ti-rich carbides that worked as diffusion barrier, reducing considerably the binding regions compared with Iron couples. In all diffusion couples samples, several reaction regions on the diffusion interface were observed and through the literature it was suggested the probable phases present in each region.

Empirical studies of financial and labor economics

Li, Mengmeng 12 August 2016 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three essays in financial and labor economics. It provides empirical evidence for testing the efficient market hypothesis in some financial markets and for analyzing the trends of power couples’ concentration in large metropolitan areas. The first chapter investigates the Bitcoin market’s efficiency by examining the correlation between social media information and Bitcoin future returns. First, I extract Twitter sentiment information from the text analysis of more than 130,000 Bitcoin-related tweets. Granger causality tests confirm that market sentiment information affects Bitcoin returns in the short run. Moreover, I find that time series models that incorporate sentiment information better forecast Bitcoin future prices. Based on the predicted prices, I also implement an investment strategy that yields a sizeable return for investors. The second chapter examines episodes of exuberance and collapse in the Chinese stock market and the second-board market using a series of extended right-tailed augmented Dickey-Fuller tests. The empirical results suggest that multiple “bubbles” occurred in the Chinese stock market, although insufficient evidence is found to claim the same for the second-board market. The third chapter analyzes the trends of power couples’ concentration in large metropolitan areas of the United States between 1940 and 2010. The urbanization of college-educated couples between 1940 and 1990 was primarily due to the growth of dual-career households and the resulting severity of the co-location problem (Costa and Kahn, 2000). However, the concentration of college-educated couples in large metropolitan areas stopped increasing between 1990 and 2010. According to the results of a multinomial logit model and a triple difference-in-difference model, this is because the co-location effect faded away after 1990.

A study on contemporary parenting and the early childhood network of care

Nathalia Teixeira Caldas Campana 26 October 2018 (has links)
The nuclear family has undergone changes over the last decades in its structure and in the way its members relate, mainly because of the feminine emancipation that enabled women to build a professional career, not restricting themselves to the mother role. The main objective of this thesis was to understand how parenting occurs in middle-upper-class heterosexual couples with children up to three years old, whose members are between 30 and 40 years old. As secondary objectives, we sought to understand the place the school and the pediatrician occupy in relation to the parental functions and to identify the notion that the interviewees have about child care. Eight couples, the pediatricians attending the children of these couples and the coordinators of the schools where the children of these couples study were interviewed. The interviews were recorded. Data analysis was carried out based on the psychoanalytical framework, with emphasis on the Winnicottian theory of personal maturation and the psychosocial and gender studies. Results were discussed in four categories: 1) maternal care and parental care; 2) possibilities of care: outsourcing and sharing; 3) to care in the interface with to educate: how to deal with limits and frustration; and 4) the parental, the conjugal and the individual. From this study, it was observed that tradition and innovation seem to coexist in the dynamics of parenting, and that the appropriation of parenting can be discussed in two areas. In the couples context, parenting was characterized by 1) greater fluidity in the parental roles; 2) parental equal care, with discursive predominance of an attribution to the greater value of the maternal figure; or 3) disruption with gender binarism in parental exercise, with a predominant attribution of responsibility to one parent. In a second context, considering the partnership established between parents and health and education professionals, these experts appeared as social representatives that could offer support and trust to the couple. In that sense, they offer holding to the parental holding, besides appearing as occupants of a place of orientation (in the case of pediatricians), or temporary substitutes for parental functions, in partnership with parents and / or third parties, representatives of culture, who stand between parents and children (in the case of schools). Among the notions of care found in the interviewees\' discourses, we highlight the paradox experienced by parents: a greater number of possibilities of life paths and different demands, related to individual satisfaction, marital satisfaction and the exercise of parenting, which may result in experiencing greater authenticity, but also greater anguish. It was emphasized that motherhood and fatherhood should be understood in their differences by the logic of alterity, and not by the difference of sex / gender

Therapist Behaviors That Predict the Therapeutic Alliance in Couple Therapy

Kubricht, Bryan C 01 June 2018 (has links)
Couple therapy is successful in treating relationship distress. However, couple therapy does not benefit everyone. Consequently, it is important to study factors that predict therapeutic success. One such factor is what predicts the development of the therapeutic alliance in couple therapy. The purpose of this study was to code therapist behaviors, therapist warmth, empathy, presence, validation, collaboration, and technique factors (systemically-based techniques and session structure), in the first session of couple therapy to examine their ability to predict two aspects of the therapeutic alliance, between- and within-alliance, after the session for males and females. The hypotheses were tested utilizing multiple one-way ANOVAs. Results indicated that none of the therapist variables predicted either of the outcome alliance variables for males or females. More research needs to be done to find what therapist behaviors predict the therapeutic alliance.

Effects of Positive and Negative Events on Daily Relationship Effect for Clinical Couples: A Daily Diary Study

Mennenga, Kayla Dawn 01 August 2015 (has links)
Relationship satisfaction is a popular variable to consider when looking at long-term success for couples. Research indicates positive and negative events have an impact on relationship satisfaction. Considering the influence of the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation framework, the present study focuses on the daily impact of positive and negative events that happen outside of therapy on couple relationship satisfaction for couples seeking therapy. Daily diary methods were used to collect data, a first for using this method with clinical couples. Random effects and multilevel models of analysis controlled for days and couples. Results suggest that on any given day, positive events impact both male and female daily relationship satisfaction. Findings also propose that these events outside of therapy tend to occur more frequently in the evening on any given day, specifically for negative events. Understanding these findings, therapists have an opportunity to use therapy as a tool to enhance adaptive processes for couples in order for couples to continue experiencing higher levels of couple satisfaction.

Marital Leisure Satisfaction: Investigating Comparative Skill Levels Within Marital Leisure Activities

Dayley, Benjamin 01 July 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate if and how comparative skill levels within marital leisure activities relate to marital satisfaction, and if gender or activity type affects that relationship, and if Flow theory could help explain a potential correlation of these leisure activity contexts. Specifically, this study examined three different comparative skill differences and similarities of couples engaging in leisure activities in three different types of leisure activities as factors in marital leisure satisfaction and ultimately Satisfaction With Married Life (SWML). Their gender and the skill-gender interactions were also included in the analysis. This study followed up on Johnson et al.'s (2006) recommendation for “œmore consideration . . . to be given to the context of the activities themselves and the motivation behind participation” (p. 20). The sample consisted of 657 participating couples regionally reflecting the population and ethnicity across the United States. The Modified Marital Activity Profile (MMAP) was used to measure marital leisure satisfaction. The Satisfaction with Married Life (SWML) scale was included after the MMAP to obtain the overall satisfaction with married life score. The flow experience was measured using items from the Flow State Scale (FSS). A mixed models analysis of co-variance indicated the most common joint leisure activity of both spouses at a similar skill level, and husband is noticeably better than wife, reported significantly higher SWML scores than when the wife is noticeably better than the husband most often. Also, couples who are satisfied with their leisure participation in worse than spouse activities have significantly high SWML scores. Analysis further showed three of the four significant Flow variables had high SWML scores when experiencing Flow, whereas non-athletic activities appeared to be opposite of the other three Flow variables. These relationships were significant even when accounting for the variance explained by demographic variables of gender, age, years married, marriage history, education obtained, ethnicity, and location. Findings support existing family leisure research. This study, however, goes beyond existing research by indicating which comparative skill levels, by gender, and activity types, are positively correlated to SWML. The findings provide implications to couples who are interested in maintaining a healthy marriage, to those considering marriage, scholars, and professionals.

Does Self-Esteem Mediate the Effect of Attachment on Relationship Quality

Lee, Alexis 01 July 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the possible mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between attachment security and relationship quality. Previous studies have found a positive association between attachment style and relationship quality. One possible explanation for this link may be self-esteem, which has been shown to consistently predict relationship quality. Therefore, I hypothesized that self-esteem may mediate the relationship between attachment and relationship quality. A sample of 680 married couples that completed the sections on attachment, self-esteem, marital satisfaction, marital stability, and problem areas in the relationship of the RELATE questionnaire between 2011 and 2013 was used. The data were analyzed using an Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to help account for shared variance. Results found that there is a positive link between one's attachment and their level of self-esteem and their own relationship quality. However, results also found negative trend-level effects for the links between attachment and partner's level of self-esteem and self-esteem and own relationship quality. There was no mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between attachment and relationship quality.

The Moderating Effect of Attachment Behaviors on the Association Between Video Game Use, Time Together as a Problem, and Relationship Quality

Dobry, Stella Christine 01 July 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to test whether video game use is associated with more problems with spending time together among married couples, whether problems with time together are associated with relationship quality, and whether attachment behaviors can moderate the association between time together as a problem and relationship quality. Previous studies have found a negative association between excessive video game use and couple relationship outcomes. Excessive video game use may negatively impact relationships by taking away from time spent on shared leisure and relationship maintenance activities. The Double ABCx model provided a theoretical framework for understanding how attachment behaviors such as accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement may act as protective factors that buffer the stress created by video game use and perceiving time together as a problem on couple relationships. A sample of 415 married couples who took the Relationship Evaluation Questionnaire between 2011 and 2013 and indicated that one or both partners played video games was used. Results indicated that there was a negative indirect effect of women's sports and music game use on women's relationship quality via women's reports of time together as a problem in the relationship. There was also a positive indirect effect of women's exercise game use on relationship quality. There was also a negative association between men's and women's reports of time together as a problem on own relationship quality. Men's attachment behaviors moderated the association between women's reports of time together as a problem and women's relationship quality. Clinical implications include more thoroughly assessing why video game use may be a problem in the relationship and fostering healthy attachment behaviors.
