The development of working relationships between indigenous and expatriate teachers : a case study

Brown, Byron Alditon 01 January 2002 (has links)
The education reform efforts in Botswana have focused predominantly on teacher preparation, recruitment and compensation. Recruitment efforts have resulted in a significant number of expatriates working with indigenous teachers in many schools. However, as the schools are currently upgraded and restructured, the quality of the working relationships forged between indigenous and expatriate teachers represents one vital aspect in the reform effort that has gone almost unattended. Many teachers have become dissatisfied and concerned about these relationships, despite compensation and preparation. A decisive first step in attending to these relationships lies in understanding how they develop. The aim of this exploratory study was to identify and describe factors related to the development of working relationships between indigenous and expatriate teachers and illustrate how those factors contribute to the development of these relationships. The study employed a micropolitical perspective and through phenomenological interviews, observation and document analysis, indicated that cultural differences in language and communication, regard for time, handling of student discipline, work ethics and professionalism along with ambiguity and uncertainty, professional and interpersonal obligations, indigenous to expatriate teacher ratio and the interplay of micropolitics are related to the development of these relationships. Results, however, are specific to one school context and should not be generalized. The study recommends management strategies such as provision of programmes for cultural exchange, communication mode standardization, a dean of discipline system, faculty building and further research to redress the situation. / Further Teacher Education / M.Ed.

A comparative content analysis of cross-border strategic brand alliance advertisements in Taiwan and the United States

Wang, Jeffrey, 1986- 03 November 2010 (has links)
This study sought to enrich the research in cross-border strategic brand alliance (SBA), an international business practice highly utilized today. In order to spread out the risk of competing in international markets, firms formed alliances with overseas counterparts. However, confusing positioning and inaccuracies in communication in cross-cultural settings reduced the success rate of these partnerships. The content analysis examined cross-border SBA advertisements to shed light on their communicational strategies. Taiwan and the US, representative of inherent cultural values in Eastern and Western countries, served as great research subjects for this comparative study. The findings suggested that cross-border SBA advertisements do not have significantly distinctive communication strategies except for the inherent difference in multi-national characteristics. However, cross-border SBA advertisements in both countries differ from generic advertisements documented in previous studies in terms of information cues, advertising appeals, and general communication strategies. The comparison between cross-border SBA advertisements was reflective of the cultural differences in these cultural contexts. In sum, cross-border SBA advertisements were embedded with stronger cultural distinctiveness and in need of special execution to integrate proper messages. / text

[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Originality / value. Multicultural teams and work groups which are responsible for major decisions are growing in number and have substantial contribution to increasing global economic integration and the extent of international cooperation. Despite the fact that the literature of social psychology is rich in information about the process of decision-making and its components, and the influence of cultural differences on international communication and cooperation is analyzed from different angles and in detail in a number of scientific works related with international communication, still little attention has been paid to problems that arise during the process of decision making in a multicultural group due to cultural differences. Therefore the research, focused on the impact of cultural differences on the decision-making in ethnically heterogeneous group, is relevant for both practical and research related aspects. Research object – subjective experience of research participants in the process of decision-making in a multicultural group. Research purpose – identify the problems encountered in the decision-making process in a multicultural group. Research objectives: 1) to determine whether and identify what kind of problem-oriented themes emerge in the process of decision-making in a multicultural group on the grounds of thematic analysis of interview data; 2) based on a theoretical analysis of scientific literature, to determine what cultural factors might cause a... There has been an attempt to keep the legitimacy of the source of the text in the translations into the Portuguese language, made by the author of the thesis. Thematic excerpts of dào, yīnyángqì, wǔxíng of the The Yellow Emperor s Inner Classic have been taken and contrasted to the European versions by means of comparisons that have been given systematized commentaries. Because both textualities are products of the fecundity and intelligibility of two distinct cultures, ancient Chinese and current European cultures, there is reference to the study of the problems of the cultural differences with the dimensions that have implications in the Philosophical, Linguistic and aesthetics scopes. A conceptual elaboration has been performed in order to explain the cultural phenomena involved in the transformation and in the translocation of the hypotext into the hypertext. The cultural differences have been made concrete based on Montgomery s cultural diffusion theories, Bastide s acculturation, globalization, Holton s hybridization, Lackner s hybridization and neo-figurism, Julien s cultural fecundity, Genette and Kristeva s intertextuality. The result of the research has led to the conclusion that the translation into Portuguese sought to preserve the authenticity of the original book s cultural and textual fecundity. The translocation of the original text from ancient China to current Europe has received modifications in cultural, philosophical, semantic-linguistic and aesthetic dimensions that took place in the translations of the ancient polysemic sinograms of taoism. These were decontextualized in the entrance of the received texts in another culture, the European culture, which is distinct from the former. It conduces to phrasing and recurrent significations, which are familiar in the receiving Western culture that overpowers the ancient Chinese, belonging to the ancestry of the Yellow Emperor / O presente trabalho científico investiga objeto composto do texto original de medicina chinesa antiga do taoismo, em chinês arcaico, o Clássico Interno do Imperador Amarelo e as traduções europeias em inglês, português, de Veith; em francês de Ung e Chamfrault.

Merino, Ismael 01 December 2016 (has links)
In this study, the subject matter evaluated is the difference between the United States and Latin America concerning the practice and acceptance of servant leadership. This research compares the practice and the acceptance of servant leadership between the United States of America and Latin America. In order to do this, a cross-cultural comparison was conducted between these two groups. The objective was to find the differences in the leadership styles of these two groups and subsequently analyze the results. The Hofstede’s cultural dimensions were used to be able to compare cultural differences, and understand why these differences appear in the societies of the two groups studied. A survey was conducted in order to gather different feedback from individuals of the U.S. as well as from Latin America. The approach for this research started by analyzing the results of the survey and dividing it into the two cultural groups. The results were tested using a one tailed t-test for the mean difference of independent samples. This research provides information on how and why leadership styles differ between the two groups studied and what are the characteristics that people seek in leaders of these two groups when testing servant leadership between the U.S. and Latin American samples.

A Client-Vendor Relationship Perspective of Cultural Differences on Cross-Border Information Technology Outsourcing

Bosire, John Kennedy 01 January 2015 (has links)
Cross-border information technology (IT) outsourcing continues to rise due to the demand for business process outsourcing. Issues such as miscommunication and management problems have emerged because of cross-cultural disparities between clients and vendors across national borders. The theoretical framework of this study was based on the organizational culture model studies of Meek, Spradley, Smith, and Draft for examining and understanding complex organizational practices. The purpose of this mixed-methods explanatory sequential case study was to qualitatively identify and quantitatively determine the management approaches that are effective in managing cross-cultural differences and the constitution of the elements of global adjustment, motivation, mindset, and communication patterns involving outsourcing business leaders in the United States. Ten IT leaders participated in-depth face-to-face interviews, while 120 IT outsourced service providers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, and India completed the survey. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed on quantitative survey data. Qualitative data from interviews were organized, coded, and the results generated 6 themes. The themes included no management issues in the current processes, a lack of formal management approaches to resolve cross-cultural issues, an intent to provide a strong management partnership platform, and a positive relationship between approaches. Quantitative results showed that formal management approaches positively correlated with global adjustment, motivation, mindset, and communication pattern. Results could be socially significant to IT business leaders, as these results will equip them with knowledge of effective practices and management approaches to address cultural diversity issues, programs, and policies in the industry.

Gay Asian and Caucasian men in Sydney: cultural, social and cognitive factors associated with sex practices

Mao, Limin, Education, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2002 (has links)
Using the perspectives of individualism-collectivism, Social Cognitive Theory and other concepts such as gay community attachment, this study focused on issues of homosexual identification, disclosure and sexual risk practices in relation to cross-cultural differences among gay Asian and Caucasian men in Sydney. Mostly recruited from gay social venues, 19 gay Asian men participated in exploratory focus groups discussions, another 201 gay Caucasian and 199 gay Asian men completed an anonymous questionnaire, and a further 10 gay Caucasian and 9 gay Asian men took part in in-depth one-to-one interviews. The major findings were: gay Asian men tended to experience conflict, in being both gay and Asian, related to individualism and collectivism; the gay Asian and Caucasian men differed in various aspects of homosexual practice, but shared certain sexual traits and practices; self-efficacy in safe sex and gay community attachment were key factors associated with gay men???s sexual risk practices (???risk??? being defined as unprotected anal intercourse with any casual partners or with a regular partner whose HIV status was not concordant with the participant???s). This study provides evidence that the inclusion of individualism-collectivism, social cognitive variables and gay community factors in the examination of homosexual identity and practice among men of different cultural backgrounds holds promise. It further suggests that educational programs to encourage safe sex will continue to yield benefits from increasing individual awareness, confidence and ability to effectively deal with situations that could pose risks of HIV transmission.

Effects of family routines and family stress on child competencies

Hill, Crystal Renee 30 October 2006 (has links)
The current study had two purposes. The first purpose was to examine the association between family rules and routines and first grade children's teacher-rated and peer-rated behavioral competencies (e.g., emotional symptoms, conduct problems, peer problems, hyperactivity, and prosocial behavior) after controlling for both family stressors (i.e., single parent home, mobility, socioeconomic status, property ownership) and child ethnicity (African American, Caucasian, Hispanic). The second purpose was to determine if child regulatory control abilities mediates the effects of family rules and routines and children's behavioral competencies. The parents of 215 ethnically diverse children (38%, Caucasian, 22% African American, 33% Hispanic, 7% Other) were interviewed in their homes with a modified and shortened version of Family Routines Inventory (FRI; Jensen, James, Boyce, & Hartnett, 1983). Teachers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ; Goodman, 1997), and peers completed a modified version of the Class Play (Masten, Morison & Pelligrini, 1985). Scores from the SDQ were standardized and combined with the standardized scores obtained from the peer nominations to create composites of the behavioral competencies. Additionally, teachers completed a modified version of the California Child Q-set (CCQ) (Block & Block, 1980) as a measure of these children's regulatory control abilities. African American parents' ratings of their family's rules and routines were higher than those of Hispanic and Caucasian parents' ratings. Additionally, family stressors were positively associated with higher teacher and peer ratings of conduct problems and lower ratings of prosocial behavior. Neither ethnicity nor family rules and routines predicted child competencies. A statistically significant curvilinear relationship was found between family rules and routines and conduct problems such that children of parents reporting the highest and lowest levels of family rules and routines have more conduct problems. No associations were found between family rules and routines and child competencies or children's regulatory control abilities. Limitations of the study are discussed in terms of inadequate measurement of family rules and routines, a defensive response set, self-selection on the part of the parents to participate in the interview, and a sample that is not representative of the community of parents and children in the participating schools.
