An investigation of the coping mechanisms of novice teachers : a study of selected high schools in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia

<p>Although there are several achievements made by the Namibian government after independence, there are still many constraints and challenges facing the education system, particularly with regard to novice teachers&rsquo / support and professional development. Most novice teachers are coming into the teaching profession and receive little or no assistance. Nevertheless, novice teachers are expected to perform the full teaching responsibilities despite their inexperience. Novice teachers are expected to formulate their own coping strategies and to grapple with the challenges they encounter during their first year of teaching on their own. This study aims at investigating the coping mechanisms used by novice teachers to achieve their teaching goals during their first year of teaching. The study recommends that the teacher training institutions, the Ministry of Education and schools have an important role to play in facilitating the use of effective coping mechanisms and in assisting novice teachers in alleviating these challenges. Teacher training should ensure that a balance is maintained between theory and practice. In addition the Ministry needs to provide favourable working conditions and put up support systems for novice teachers. Schools should also provide orientation to all novice teachers and most especially render support to all novice teachers until they are fully integrated into the school and teaching culture.</p>

<p>he Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic continue to endanger the lives of many people in the world, particularly in developing countries like South Africa (UNAIDS, 2010). &nbsp / South Africa has the largest percentage of people living with HIV &amp / AIDS in the world, with &nbsp / AIDS continuing to be the leading cause of death (UNAIDS, 2010). Yet, as Svenson et al., &nbsp / (1997),&nbsp / Cain, (2005), Shisana et al., (2009) and Kalichman et al., (2005) argue, in spite of the HIV epidemic, risky sexual behaviour has increased among young people. Problematically, youth in university environments are reported to be uninterested in hearing about HIV, claiming to be tired and bored with the subject (HEAIDS, 2010). They think they have sufficient knowledge on HIV transmission and prevention. Regardless of this claim, a high rate of new infections of HIV among youth continues (The South African Department of Basic Education Report, 2010). The main purpose of this study was to assess UWC students&rsquo / knowledge about HIV and their attitudes towards it, while investigating the impact of the MTV-produced Shuga film on the students&rsquo / self-perception of risk and their attitudes toward HIV. The study assesses the value of a follow-up conversation on the film after it is viewed by students. n order to identify respondents&rsquo / perceptions, the study used a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions as main instruments and a quantitative approach using questionnaires as a main instrument. The study used a gender-balanced convenience sample of 40 undergraduate and post-graduate students selected from University of Western Cape campus. These respondents were later divided into four focus group discussions guided by semi-structured interviews. The study findings established that although students&rsquo / knowledge levels were very high for modes of transmission and prevention of HIV, they still had a poor perception of their own risk - a factor noted as a key need in HIV prevention by Douglas Kirby (2011). his study found that, prior to watching the MTV Shuga film, the level of students&rsquo / awareness of HIV issues as related to their own risk and health was at best inconsistent. While some held accurate knowledge of HIV and understood their own vulnerability, others saw it as someone else&rsquo / s problem and had yet to personalise the disease in a manner that would increase their own awareness of risk. After viewing the MTV Shuga film, study data indicated a reasonable level of positive change in attitudes and risk perception among the 40 students. However, the data clearly indicated that the follow-up discussion sessions provoked more change in the students&rsquo / attitudes and perceptions of risk than the film on its own. The study therefore suggests the importance of discussion sessions that follow up on edutainment media pieces attempting to promote positive ehavioural change vis-&agrave / -vis HIV. While the study did not focus in depth on why the follow-up discussion sessions had a higher impact than film-viewing alone, the discussion sessions allowed students to personalise the content of the Shuga film, sharing with each other how they identified with various characters, situations and beha&nbsp / viours. Shuga became &lsquo / real&rsquo / through the personal discussions between students, and the film&rsquo / &nbsp / s intent to prompt positive change was further supported.</p>

Differently from previous attacks, many recent DDoS attacks have not been carried out over the Transport Layer, but over the Application Layer. The main difference is that in the latter, an attacker can target a particular application of the server, while leaving the others applications still available, thus generating less traffic and being harder to detected. Such attacks are possible by exploiting application layer protocols used by the target application. This work proposes a novel defense, called SeVen, for Application Layer DDoS attacks (ADDoS) based on the Adaptive Selective Verification (ASV) defense used for Transport Layer DDoS attacks. We used two approches to validate the SeVen: 1) Simulation: The entire defense mechanism was formalized in Maude tool and simulated using the statistical model checker (PVeStA). 2) Real scenario experiments: Analysis of efficiency SeVen, implemented in C++, in a real experiment on the network. We investigate the resilience for mitigating three attacks using the HTTP protocol: HTTPPOST, Slowloris, and HTTP-GET. The defence is effective, with high levels of availability, for all three types of attacks, despite having different attack profiles, and even for a relatively large number of attackers. / Ataques de Negação de Serviço Distribuídos (Distributed Denial of Service - DDoS) estão entre os ataques mais perigosos na Internet. As abordagens desses ataques vêm mudando nos últimos anos, ou seja, os ataques DDoS mais recentes não têm sido realizados na camada de transporte e sim na camada de aplicação. A principal diferença é que, nesse último, um atacante pode direcionar o ataque para uma aplicação específica do servidor, gerando menos tráfego na rede e tornando-se mais difícil de detectar. Tais ataques exploram algumas peculiaridades nos protocolos utilizados na camada de aplicação. Este trabalho propõe SeVen, um mecanismo de defesa probabilístico para mitigar ataques DDoS na camada de aplicação, baseada em Adaptive Selective Verification (ASV), um mecanismo de defesa para ataques DDoS na camada de transporte. Foram utilizadas duas abordagens para validar o SeVen: 1) Simulação: Todo o mecanismo de defesa foi formalizado na ferramenta computacional, baseada em lógica de reescrita, chamada Maude e simulado usando um modelo estatístico (PVeStA). 2) Experimentos na rede: Análise da eficiência do SeVen, implementado em C++, em um experimento real na rede. Em particular, foram investigados três ataques direcionados ao Protocolo HTTP: GET FLOOD, Slowloris e o POST. Nesses ataques, apesar de terem perfis diferentes, o SeVen obteve um elevado índice de disponibilidade.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work aims at verify the implications in Marguerite Duras literary aesthetic by proposing the denial of representation, through transgression to the traditional narrative. Starting from three texts by Duras which dialogue with the cinematographic language Le camion (1977), Le Navire Night (1979) and La maladie de la mort (1983), this work, throughout three chapters, recognizes in these novels denounce writing, in which the language itself unveils and unmasks its mechanisms. The first chapter proposes the discussion about the different concepts of representation and the search of Duras writing for a possible beyond the truth of what the words hide. At a second moment, I reflect about the impossibility of Duras writing in express an absolute view about the world to be represented, where the dialogue with other languages is an attempt to overcome the condition of discontinuity appropriate to the existence. Finally, in the last chapter, the possible meanings in an aesthetic answer aiming at denying the representation is sought: Duras writing is recongnized as transgression and a refusal of the definitive. The demystifying sincerity to which Duras writing proposes to do, faces the collapse of rationality, with only the experience and limits of dissolution and certainty being left. / Este trabalho tem por objetivo verificar as implicações na estética literária de Marguerite Duras ao propor a negação da representação, através de transgressões à narrativa tradicional. A partir de três textos de Duras que dialogam com a linguagem cinematográfica, Le camion (1977), Le Navire Night (1979) e La maladie de la mort (1983), esse trabalho, ao longo de três capítulos, reconhece nesses textos uma escrita de denúncia, em que a própria linguagem se propõe a tirar máscaras e desvelar seus mecanismos. O primeiro capítulo propõe a discussão sobre diferentes conceitos de representação e a busca da escrita de Duras por um possível além da verdade que as palavras ocultam. Num segundo momento, buscase a reflexão acerca da manifesta impossibilidade da escrita de Duras em exprimir uma visão absoluta do mundo a ser representado, em que o diálogo com outras linguagens é uma tentativa de ultrapassar a condição de descontinuidade, própria da existência. Por fim, no último capítulo, questionam-se possíveis sentidos em uma proposta estética que visa a negar a representação: reconhece-se a escrita de Marguerite Duras enquanto transgressão e recusa ao definitivo. A sinceridade desmistificadora a que a escrita de Marguerite Duras se propõe depara-se com o desmoronamento da racionalidade, restando apenas ruínas da experiência e a dissolução de limites e certezas.

Denial of the Holocaust and other crimes from the perspective of the international protection of human rights (freedom of expression) This thesis discusses the conflict between the freedom of expression and other rights and values guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, which are affected by denial of the Holocaust and other crimes. Freedom of expression is a relative fundamental right that can be limited in order to protect other protected rights and values. In cases of denial of the Holocaust and other crimes, freedom of expression can be limited in the interests of the protection of the dignity of victims and prevention of disorder or crime. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view on the issue of denial of the Holocaust and other crimes in the light of freedom of expression in the European Court of Human Rights case law.
