In mid twentieth century Britain, after the experience of total war, evil was not an abstract concept but a palpable reality. How was evil understood, and how did this understanding influence notions of English national identity? This thesis examines the lives and works of C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and J.R.R. Tolkien, members of the British literary club Inklings. It probes representations of evil, Englishness, gender and the erotic in their fiction and shows specifically how their science fiction, horror, and fantasy was a response to the moral and human devastation of two world wars. The thesis suggests that the Inkling’s middle brow literature opens a window on a wider sense of uncertainty and longing about Englishness in the eve of decolonization and decline.

This thesis deals with the representation of the erotic body in the works of the most important authors of French sixteenth-century poetry, particularly those of the Pleiade. By "erotic body" we mean a body that is involved in activities of carnal love, a type of love which is considered, during the Renaissance, as the opposite of a more chaste and spiritual kind of love. Our hypothesis is that the textual representation of such a body is coherent throughout the sixteenth century. Since poetic expression is governed by rules of decency during this period, description of the erotic body cannot be direct; its expression depends on analogy and attenuation techniques. Analogy, besides its allusive quality, creates the image of a body "open" to the cosmos rather than one that is fragmented and hermetic. Beauty holds a central position in the imagery of the erotic body. It is a very conventional beauty whose qualities (white, round, hard and smooth) transform the female form into a veritable statue. On the contrary, ugliness and disease are used to sanction behaviour that would otherwise be seen as reprehensible. The erotic art shown in poetry is framed by orthodox morals that condemn certain acts such as sodomy. The guiding principle is one of moderation. Erotic art is also based upon gestures that are fluid and capricious, quite the opposite of a fixed posture. Gestures are made in varied ways, from biting to tickling. However, kissing is the most important practice; it literally kills and resurrects the lover. The center of Renaissance erotic art is the loving couple, whose relations consist of requital and sometimes also of restraint. The game of feigned resistance allows lovers to reconcile these two extremes and to create an erotic relationship that embraces opposition and collaboration between the sexes. The most sought-after locations in Renaissance eroticism are always the same: bucolic surroundings offering a corner away from others' eyes. Temporality on the other hand is variable: stages of life, seasons, holidays, all lend themselves to carnal love. However, the instant reveals itself as the most erotic moment, not because it allows direct pleasure but because it concentrates desire under the guise of a call to carpe diem or of fictitious times (wishes, prayers), thus offering an imaginary satisfaction.

Le sujet de ce mémoire s'attache à circonscrire le champ de l'extase chez Georges Bataille. Il s’agit de délimiter les frontières d’un concept qui, a priori, ne peut en avoir, d’où un paradoxe à résoudre : comment parvenir à poser des limites à ce qui est illimité par essence ?
Nous verrons que l’extase bataillienne rompt de façon radicale avec la tradition mystique en créant un concept qui, au lieu d’embrasser l’absolu, le tout, demeure une expérience purement intérieure. Nous nous focaliserons ensuite sur le caractère érotique de ses fondations. Bataille revendique en effet l’essence érotique, et non mystique, de l’extase. Parce que pour Georges Bataille, la mystique c’est l’impossible, nous analyserons enfin l’impasse apparente de son extase. Car si le champ de ce dernier se borne au seuil du mystique, il en résulte une puissance et portée moindres que celles de l’extase proprement mystique. Dès lors, nous nous interrogerons sur les failles d’un tel concept. Étant donné que l’extase bataillienne rejette toute mystique de son champ, il nous faudra nous pencher sur la possibilité de la définir comme un échec. Georges Bataille a-t-il conceptualisé l'extase du drogué ? Ou les débris laissés par le mort de Dieu ? A moins que l'extase bataillienne ne concrétise simplement l'agonie du spirituel...
Dans cette recherche, nous définirons des notions batailliennes telles que : « nudité », « angoisse », « dépense improductive », « souveraineté » ou « petite mort ». Et pour ce faire, nous nous concentrerons en priorité sur ces ouvrages : L’expérience intérieure, Ma mère, L’histoire de l’œil, Le bleu du ciel et L’Érotisme. / The purpose of this thesis is to define the topic of ecstasy as understood and explained by Georges Bataille. Our goal being to establish the frontiers of a concept which is, a priori, free of limits, we might be facing a paradox. In fact, how can we limit something which is by essence, unlimited ? We will see that the ecstasy of Bataille breaks in a radical way with the traditional notions of the mystic by creating a concept that, instead of embracing the Absolute, the All, remains an inner experience. Then, we will precise our search into the erotic nature of its foundations. Indeed, Bataille claims the erotic essence, not mystical, of the ecstasy. For him, the mystic is the impossible. Because of that, we will study the apparent deadlock of his conception of the ecstasy. The fact that Bataille’s conception of the ecstasy ends when the mystic begins, we conclude that the ecstasy is for him of a lesser power and scope than the mystical ecstasy. Therefore, we will discuss the possible weaknesses of such a conception of the ecstasy. Knowing that Bataille excludes all the mystical aspects from its vision of the ecstasy, we will ask if we should consider it a failure by nature. Has Georges Bataille actually conceptualized the ecstasy of the drug consumer? Has he tried to link his conception of ecstasy to the ruins left by the death of God ? Or could it be that Bataille’s ecstasy is simply the agony of the spirituality...?
In this study, we will define some notions introduced by Bataille such as: “nudity”, “anxiety”, “unproductive expenditure”, “sovereignty” or “little death”. In order to do so, we will work on the following literature by Bataille: L’expérience intérieure, Ma mère, L’histoire de l’œil, Le bleu du ciel and L’Érotisme.

Tais trabalhos se utilizam de pelos e cabelos como matéria física e conceitual na sua elaboração e a partir destes elementos dar-se inicio a uma série de investigações que buscam trazer a tona os meandros do processo da criação e produção artística. A investigação inicia com a visita a algumas obras anteriores em que o elemento cabelo aparece. A partir daí uma serie de temas atravessam o caminho. Dentre os quais estão as questões relativas ao corpo, à vida e à morte, ao desejo, ao trauma, à biografia, ao acaso, ao medo, ao erotismo, à animalidade, à perversão, a sublimação e à linguagem. Dentre os autores mais visitados estão: Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida e Gilles Deleuze / From Assinalations to Exile: Investigations between Art and Subjectivity is a reflection about the building process of the artworks from the series SORTERRO and EXILE. These artworks used fur and hair as physical and conceptual matter, and, after these elements, started a process of investigations that would seek to bring to light the intricacies of the creation process. The has investigation initiated with the contact with some previous artworks that the element hair could have been found. After that, a series of themes crossed the pathway taken. Among them, issues related to body, to life and death, to desires, to trauma, to biography, to fortuity, to fear, to eroticism, to animalism, to perversion, to sublimation and to the language appeared.
