Toward Usable Access Control for End-users: A Case Study of Facebook Privacy Settings

Johnson, Maritza Lupe January 2012 (has links)
Many protection mechanisms in computer security are designed to enforce a configurable policy. The security policy captures high-level goals and intentions, and is managed by a policy author tasked with translating these goals into an implementable policy. In our work, we focus on access control policies where errors in the specified policy can result in the mechanism incorrectly denying a request to access a resource, or incorrectly allowing access to a resource that they should not have access to. Due to the need for correct policies, it is critical that organizations and individuals have usable tools to manage security policies. Policy management encompasses several subtasks including specifying the initial security policy, modifying an existing policy, and comprehending the effective policy. The policy author must understand the configurable options well enough to accurately translate the desired policy into the implemented policy. Specifying correct security policies is known to be a difficult task, and prior work has contributed policy authoring tools that are more usable than the prior art and other work has also shown the importance of the policy author being able to quickly understand the effective policy. Specifying a correct policy is difficult enough for technical users, and now, increasingly, end-users are being asked to make access control decisions in regard to who can access their personal data. We focus on the need for an access control mechanism that is usable for end-users. We investigated end-users who are already managing an access control policy, namely social network site (SNS) users. We first looked at how they manage the access control policy that defines who can access their shared content. We accomplish this by empirically evaluating how Facebook users utilize the available privacy controls to implement an access control policy for their shared content and found that many users have policies are inconsistent with their sharing intentions. Upon discovering that many participants claim they will not take corrective action in response to inconsistencies in their existing settings, we collected quantitative and qualitative data to measure whether SNS users are concerned with the accessibility of their shared content. After confirming that users do in fact care about who accesses their content, we hypothesize that we can increase the correctness of users' SNS privacy settings by introducing contextual information and specific guidance based on their preferences. We found that the combination of viewership feedback, a sequence of direct questions to audit the user's sharing preferences, and specific guidance motivates some users to modify their privacy settings to more closely approximate their desired settings. Our results demonstrate the weaknesses of ACL-based access control mechanisms, and also provide support that it is possible to improve the usability of such mechanisms. We conclude by outlining the implications of our results for the design of a usable access control mechanism for end-users.

Facebook, friendship and faith : connecting practices of young adult Christians

Van Landuyt, Cathryn A. January 2014 (has links)
This research is about practising friendship as a Christian in contemporary contexts. The thesis uses methods of practical theology, explained in the first chapter, to explore three practices that are important to many young adult Christians: Facebook, friendship and faith. In Chapter 2 we attend to descriptions of Facebook and friendship practices of young adult Christians based on qualitative research conducted through fieldwork. Models are developed to organize assumptions and values of the participants and provide a framework for analysis. In Chapter 3 the practices are placed in the context of wider social/cultural dimensions in order to recognize ways the young people involved in the fieldwork are following culture and where they are being counter-cultural. In Chapter 4 we view what are interpreted as value-laden practices alongside various theologies of friendship. In the fifth chapter the social/cultural aspects of friendship practices encounter and engage with the theological perspectives. The analysis is based on an understanding of the relationship between faith practices and the ‘wider culture' that has been established by the preceding chapters. The final stage of an initial iteration of the practical theology cycle is implementation of reformed practices, illustrated by examples and conclusions in Chapter 6. This application of the practical theology cycle raises consciousness of the need for connection of personal practices and becomes a catalyst for a continuous cycle of examining and reflecting on experiences, contexts, and faith perspectives. The theological voice of young adult Christians is heard and valued in realizing friendship as a means of fulfilling a call in Christ.

The subject of this research is the page Humans of New York. The selected corpus for interpretation (collected throughout 2016 and 2017 and made by 20 posts) is focused on (1) posts that frame immigrants and (2) public manifestations through likes/reactions and comments. For contextualization, a few concepts are discussed, such as internet, social networks, algorithms and filter bubbles. The theme of otherness, then, is placed in perspective, among concepts just as identity, hospitality and anthropology of emotions. The method used is Deep Hermeneuthics, of Thompson, combined with digital methods. The data found indicates that people are conditioned to digital features at the same time as they appropriate a new environment, which impacts fundamentally the way we relate to the Other. O objeto da pesquisa ? a p?gina Humans of New York.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Natália Radtke.pdf: 1900604 bytes, checksum: 56f2503ede2f5442a6127b009fa10ba0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-08 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq# / #-2555911436985713659# / #600 / This study analyses occurrences of linguistic discrimination in six posts taken from the page “Português da Depressão”(Portuguese of Depression in english), hosted on the website of the social network Facebook. To that end, concepts are used that try to characterize the space online and the details that cover this social network, trying to perceive the effects of meaning in the online language in the interactions that occur between the social network users. The study delivers a theoretical background that pursues outlining and offering a historical overview about the internet and the online sociability regarding the concept of territorynetwork. After that, a brief presentation of the internet slang is made correlating it to the linguistic discrimination, to subsequently approach a discursive and ideological bias on this phenomenon. For this purpose, the CMDA has been used, a methodology that proposes to study the online discursive phenomena. In the analyzes made, it was possible to confirm the hypothesis that the linguistic discrimination is accompanied by other social values. The low linguistic performance, for example, is correlated to a low intellectual level, and the discourses loaded with sarcasm and humor end up naturalizing and perpetuating the linguistic discrimination in the virtual environment.

Lobato, Robson de Souza 27 April 2015 (has links)
This work is linked to the line of research: Social Studies and Pedagogical Physical Education, Sport and Recreation with Theme in: Media, Education and Physical Education of the Masters / PhD in Physical Education from the University of Brasilia. The issue emerged from our pedagogical practice and readings on Media and Body investigated the question: what is the influence of online social networks, specifically Facebook, the body of social representations from the perspective of graduate teachers in physical education? We had the following objectives: a) analyze social representations of the body of graduate teachers in Physical Education users online social network Facebook; b) identify aspects of online social networks as media elements that influence the social representations of the body of physical education teachers; c) Check what information on the body conveyed in online social networks of teachers. From the technological advances and human interactions that occur through the use of these technologies can "observe" social representations as shown by Moscovici (2003). We raised the hypothesis in this study the possibility of social representations of the body of PE teachers online social network users, specifically Facebook, suffer media influences while social environment to which they are inserted. This study is a qualitative and descriptive research where the instruments for data collection were a word recall task to identify the body of social representations of teachers and also used an online questionnaire prepared in the SURVEY MONKEY platform composed of semi-structured questions based on a minimum script where the respondent was able to work out of spontaneous freely on the subject in question without being attached to the formulated question that according to Rangel (2004) is the favorable condition to the study of social representations. In analyzing the data the methodological assumption that guided the research was the inductive-interpretive process that, according to Kipnis (2004) contributes to describe simultaneously several factors that make up our reality, seeking a context, understanding and interpretation of the phenomenon studied, where the researcher part of freer observations, letting dimensions and categories of interest progressively emerge during the process of collection, analysis and discussion of the data. For the analysis of the data were established and applied categories to classify the variety of representations pointed out by teachers using the Bardin content analysis (2011) as a set of analysis techniques of communication that seeks through systematic instruments the content of messages and the indicators that allow the inference of knowledge related to the conditions of production and reception of messages. The results indicated that Facebook as a social network and media element through bodies spotted images, "tanned", "Reviewed" and "shared" can influence the body representations of certain individuals and that social representations of these teachers are closely related to the "health" element, which in turn corresponds to its central and secondarily core and peripheral core are the words "movement, beauty, aesthetics and life" that also show relationship to the core.
